Символика на майчиното мляко и кърменето при българите

Author(s): Irina Aleksandrovna Sedakova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2014

This ethnolinguistic article focuses on the symbolism and mythological issues of mother’s milk and nursing in Bulgarian traditional childbirth customs and folk medicine. The study is based on lexical, phraseological, folklore and ritual published, archival and author’s field data. Ontological features of milk (liquid, white color, temporality, nutrition qualities) develop symbolism and correlate with other “synonymic” objects (water, bread, onions) and actions (movement, walking). The magic connection made through breastfeeding and milk gets ritual dimension and is regarded as spiritual bias (“milk relationship”) and is depicted in folklore and taken into account by folk law.

Author(s): Dzheni Madzharov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2014

This report proposes a new approach in solving some problemes by studying gestures in culture. The principle that each human movement, which is laden with meaning, is a “sign” in semiotic sense of this name I use as basis. This type of movement holds key features that distinguish it from other similar gesture-sign. The establishment of these features and their analysis allows, at any particular use of a gesture, precise to determine its actual role and importance (function and semantics) in the text of the relevant ritual, custom, holiday, culture. These basic characteristics, that are inherent to any ritualized gesture, form the so called by me “system of dimensions of ritual gesture.” The system includes the following five dimensions: physical form of gesture, environment, relationship between addresser and addressee, function and semantics. The paper examines the content and the scope of each of these dimensions. The result of using the method makes it possible to determine the exact purpose and social importance of each researched ritualized action, which involves the studied gesture.

Author(s): Pavlin Chaushev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2011

The present research report aims at revealing the evolution of one of the most typical Bulgarian head ornaments in the region of Veliko Tarnovo, namely of the so-called “sokai”. This ornament was very popular from the 18th c. to the beginning of the 20th c. Its construction is very complex: it consists of several parts which are linked together with the help of a big kerchief and it has a wooden base (“buka”). Each part has a unique name. The big metal section in the shape of a crown is called “krazhilo”. According to some researchers from the beginning of the 20th c. the “sokai” dated as far back as the mediaeval Bulgarian royal court. In the opinion of this author however they were first produced in the 18thcentury. The decoration is typical of the Orient. Some new elements were added to it in the beginning of the 19th century.

Материалната култура – клетата Пепеляшка в дома на Етнологията (образователно есе)

Author(s): Margarita Karamihova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2022

The article aims to provoke a discussion about studying and teaching tangible cultural heritage in Bulgaria. It compares the curricula in Ethnology at different universities. It is obvious that very little attention is drawn to the tangible cultural heritage. This leads to very poor preparation of students who are about to become teachers or to work in museums. A new trend for change is observed at St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo. It is taught by the expert in tangible cultural heritage Pavlin Chaushev, PhD. In recent years, the number of lecture courses in which he presents various aspects of material culture from antiquity to the present day has increased. Plamen Sabev, PhD, who is Head of the Laboratory for restoration and conservation at the Regional Museum of History in Veliko Tarnovo, was also involved in teaching ethnologists. His expertise in 3D reconstructions of museum sites is particularly interesting and promising for students. The author points out the positive effect of studying and teaching tangible and intangible cultural heritage at the University on students, and hopes this trend to be shared by other universities.
