Author(s): Tomáš Čech,Simona Dobešová Cakirpaloglu,Alena Gillová / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2021

Teaching in nursery schools is a demanding profession based on interaction with people. As a result, teachers are exposed to an increased risk of burnout. The main goal of the research was to find out to what extent the pedagogical staff of the mentioned nursery schools are endangered by the burnout syndrome and how satisfied they are in their profession. The research group consisted of 90 participants which included teachers from all nursery schools for children with special educational needs in the Czech Republic. To determine the empirical data, the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Educators Survey, Teacher Satisfaction Inventory and One-Dimensional Assessment Scale measuring teachers’ climate perception were used. The results suggest that special needs nursery school teachers are at a high risk of burnout in the dimension of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization in contrast to the high level of personal satisfaction, job satisfaction and satisfaction with the working climate.

Theories and Models Regarding Formal / Informal Duality of the Labor Market

Theories and Models Regarding Formal / Informal Duality of the Labor Market

Author(s): Cristian Marinescu / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2019

This work proposes an incursion, from a theoretical point of view, in the specialized literature that has, over time, approached the labor market through the formal / informal duality. From the review of the specialized literature, I found that the studies on the duality of the labor market were based on aspects related to: the bureaucracy or the regulations existing on the two types of labor markets (formal/informal), productivity, rigidity, of the salaries practiced on the two types of markets, as well as the option of employees for formal or informal, depending on the cost benefit analysis. In this paper we intend to detail the models and theories with specialized literature is currently operating to characterize the labor market, through the formal/informal duality, respectively models based on the aspect of: bureaucracy /market regulations (Hart, Soto, ILO), productivity (Lewis), rigidity (Joshi, Hield), wages (Kuznets, Field) or employee choice (Maloney, Perry).

Dependent self-employment – Italy as a good practice example

Dependent self-employment – Italy as a good practice example

Author(s): Miroslava Knapková / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

The aim of the paper is to describe dependent self-employment phenomenon on the example of selected EU country – Italy. In Italy, not only hybrid category of dependent self-employment is officially recognised and legally regulated, but also specific social protection is offered to dependent self-employed persons. Content analysis of relevant literature and legal documents was used to identify specifics of dependent self-employment in Italy. Results indicate that in Italy, regulation of dependent self-employment has undertaken remarkable changes in the past years. The latest labour market reform (Jobs Act) subsumed the most typical forms of dependent self-employment (contracts for “coordinated and continuous collaborations” and contracts based on specific projects) under the protection of Labour law regulation. Despite the persisting controversial attitudes towards this situation, the view of the positive trend in the development of dependent self-employment legislation in Italy prevails.

Undocumented Workers during Malaysia’s Movement Control Order (MCO)

Undocumented Workers during Malaysia’s Movement Control Order (MCO)

Author(s): Diana Peters,Marja Azlima Omar,Ramli Dollah,Wan Shawaluddin Wan Hassan / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

Malaysia has a significant population of migrant labour force. Out of the 5.5 million migrant workers in the country, more than half are reported to be undocumented, with the state of Sabah being home to the highest population of undocumented migrant workers majority from the Philippines and Indonesia. Since the 1970s the scale of migration increased drastically with the arrival of large number of Muslim refugees from the war-torn southern Philippines, and economic migrants from rural areas of Indonesia, in hopes of achieving better economic and food security. This steady flow of foreign labour also coincided with the state’s economic development plan which saw labour intensive sectors such as constructions, plantation and timber boom. However, when the Covid-19 pandemic began to spread in Malaysia, job opportunities drastically reduced as the government pulled the brakes on almost all economic sectors and closed off the borders. The Movement Controlled Order (MCO) announced nationwide beginning 18 March 2020 thus increased the vulnerability of the undocumented irregular migrants, as the economic threat in the form of loss of wages and movement restrictions decreased the food security of this group. This paper looks at the ways in which three undocumented labourers and their families originating from Basilan, Philippines, survived during Malaysia’s MCO period as they were deserted by their employers. Abandoned at their work sites, and receiving no pay for the duration of the three months MCO, this article looks at the vulnerable position of these undocumented labourers during the Covid-19 pandemic as they dealt with the issue of food security.

Determinants of Migration Decisions of Asylum Seekers in Vienna

Determinants of Migration Decisions of Asylum Seekers in Vienna

Author(s): Andrej Přívara / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

This study analyses the issues that refugees and asylum seekers face in Austria and the effects of their concentration in Vienna. We present an assessment of main difficulties and root causes for asylum seekers in Vienna. Data was collected via personal interviews and also supported by regional and European statistics. In total, 12 interviews with municipality representatives, NGOs, and migrants were conducted. Firstly, our study showed, that the asylum seekers face difficulties integrating into the Austrian labor market. Most refugee children do not have access to the compulsory education. It is argued that a more inclusive policy would improve the labor market efficiency in Austria. The anti-immigrant sentiment in Vienna played a crucial role in creating difficulties faced by migrants in the process of integration. Those who have been granted asylum in Vienna are not interested in moving to another country. This tendency is driven by the following factors: They consider Austria a safe country; they have already learned the language; they are overall satisfied.

Latin Americans in Switzerland : Dual Citizenship, Gender and Labour Market Incorporation

Latin Americans in Switzerland : Dual Citizenship, Gender and Labour Market Incorporation

Author(s): Juan Galeano / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

Since the 1990s, many European and Latin American countries have changed their laws to permit the acquisition of dual citizenship. This shift has accompanied the increase in Latin American migration to Europe and poses new challenges for studies on migrants’ integration, which are often based on nationality. We investigate the labour market incorporation of the Latin American-born population in Switzerland and compare the position of different groups of Latin American-born populations according to their nationality (Latin American, EU27 or Swiss). To do so, we assess the rate of overqualification for each group, separate by sex, and we implement logistic models to evaluate the impact of sociodemographic covariates on the likelihood of being overqualified. The results reflect the Swiss labour market segmentation by both nationality and sex, as the influence of the reason for migration on the labour market incorporation of these groups.

Employment Status and Labour Income of Turkish and Other Immigrants in the United States

Employment Status and Labour Income of Turkish and Other Immigrants in the United States

Author(s): Selda Dudu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

Turkish immigrants are a growing part of the US labour market. This article explores the employment status and labour income determinants of the Turkish immigrants in the US between 2000 and 2019, using data from the American Community Survey and comparing them with other immigrants. The estimation findings show that gender, age, marital status, English level, citizenship status, education level, occupation, and years spent in the US are significant determinants of the employment status and labour income of immigrants in the US. Although Turkish immigrants earn more on average than other immigrants, once other factors (such as gender, age, education level, years spent in the US, citizenship status, proficiency in English, and occupation) are taken into account, the regression analysis demonstrates that some Turkish immigrants earn exceptionally high salaries in the US; in contrast, the remainder earn average or below-average amounts.

RAZVITOST IN USKLAJENOST KOMPETENC DIPLOMANTOV S PRIČAKOVANJI DELODAJALCEV

Author(s): Sabina Vlašić / Language(s): Slovenian Issue: 3/2012

We are faced with competences daily. However, the term is often incorrectly interpreted and applied. The reason for this is the absence of an universally accepted definition or theory. To understand the concept of competencies better I presented its important definitions. The concept of competence in public administration is introduced very slowly, while in Slovenia it has not yet defined the catalog of core competencies, which can help potential employers find the most suitable candidate for the job. This paper presents the results of research on the development and coordination skills of graduates with the expectations of employers, which was created as part of an empirical thesis. The survey covered the 84 graduates and 28 administrative units (48.8%), 41 municipalities (19.4%) and 5 ministries (27.7%). Research has shown that there is a gap between the need for certain competencies by employers and the acquisition of these competencies in the course of education. The required level of competence is a lot higher than the level of acquired skills.

Transformative Agency in Workers’ Account: Tensions in Professional Development

Transformative Agency in Workers’ Account: Tensions in Professional Development

Author(s): Maria Antonietta Impedovo / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2022

The concept of agency expresses one’s will in actions that alter reality. In the work market’s current social and cultural conditions, individuals are pushed to continuous change to transform their professional and personal lives. The interests and socio-material constraints help understand the personal and professional path shape. In this paper, we will focus on how a group of workers expressed transformative agency in their narrative accounts, how it evolves and the influence of the interests and socio-material constraints on the expression of agency. To pursue this objective, we interviewed twelve workers that moved from Italy to France. From the transcription and the analysis, we have identified four dimensions in their account to make sense of their career path: conflicts of motives to act; wandering actions in global cultural (dis)fluency; activation of resources toward an (in)definite interest; sensorial and material mobility.

Türkiye’de Bölgesel İşsizlik ve Suç Türleri İlişkisi: Panel Veri Yaklaşımı

Türkiye’de Bölgesel İşsizlik ve Suç Türleri İlişkisi: Panel Veri Yaklaşımı

Author(s): Mehmet Çınar,Canan Tas / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2022

In this study, using the 2009-2019 period data for 26 regions of Turkey, the relationship between unemployment and crime types was examined with a panel data approach. In addition, the crime model was analyzed in two categories as against property and life. According to the findings obtained from the analysis results, it was concluded that the relationship between unemployment and crime was positive in the direction of expectations. When evaluated in terms of different crime types, it was revealed that the most common crime type of unemployed individuals was theft, and the least type of crime was insult. When looking at the results of crimes against property and life, it was determined that the increase in unemployment by one thousand increases the crimes against property almost three times compared to crimes against life. In addition, it was determined that the increases in unemployment and divorce increase the tendency to crime, and the increases in income and education reduce the tendency to crime. Furthermore, unemployment, divorce, income, and education variables were all found to be more effective on crimes against property than crimes against life. Although many independent variables were used in the multiple regression model, it was determined that the most effective variable on crime was unemployment.

Author(s): Furkan Marasli,Ali Ekber Akgün,Büşra MÜCELDİLİ / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2022

In recent years, the relationship between moral emotions and positive work outcomes in organizational studies has attracted great attention by researchers. Moral emotions family serves to support the moral standards institutionalized by the society. In organizational context, it helps individuals to evaluate not only their own behaviour but also the behaviour of others they interact with. Moral elevation, which is an emotion belonging to the family of moral emotions; refers to the emotion that individuals experience when they witness a moral beauty. Current literature provides numerous studies conducted to explore and test the conceptualization of moral elevation, its antecedents and consequences and the linkage mechanisms with other concepts. This conceptual study will outline the moral elevation literature by drawing its theoretical background and identify the findings and variables linked to the concept. Introducing moral elevation concept to the local literature will be expected to guide scholars for further research. Suggestions for theoretical research and practical implications are presented for both scholars and practitioners.

In order to qualify the hours worked outside normal working hours as overtime work, it is essential that the employer has the initiative of demanding overtime work by the employee. Should the latter claim that such a request was made by the employer, the burden of proof lies with the employee, under Article 287 of the Labor Code.

Probleme practice privind determinarea timpului de lucru şi a muncii suplimentare în cazul lucrătorilor care îşi desfăşoară activitatea în cadrul grupurilor de societăţi

Author(s): Răzvan Anghel / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2018

The groups of companies are an economic reality without regulation of a general nature, with only specific regulations in certain areas. Working relationships within groups of companies have certain peculiarities. In court practice, there were identified situations in which an employee pursued a single activity but under different individual contracts, concluded separately with different employers who, however, belonged to a group of companies. The question was whether the work programs established based on each individual employment contract should be considered separately or should be aggregated in order to determine whether additional work was done and properly remunerated. In view of the limitation of weekly working time under Directive 2003/88 / EC, the same problem can be raised as well as a subsequent problem of employers’ responsibility for complying with this limitation.
