The Adriatic-Baltic Transversal: Danilo Kiš Through the Prism of Baltic Writing on Essentialism and Diversity

The purpose of this paper will be to compare the ideas of one highly regarded southeast European writer, Danilo Kiš (1935–1989) of Yugoslavia, with those of some leading writers and thinkers from the Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. My analysis will center on the vague concepts of “identity” and “national culture”. I will explore, by reference to the many essays and interviews of Danilo Kiš, concrete topics such as essentialism and linguistic and ethnic diversity and look for parallels or contrast in the works of some Baltic writers. These thoughts will, I hope, spark a discussion based on sources broader than those that I command about what terms such as identity and national culture actually mean and how they effect the production, or reputation, of writers. It should also be possible to look at some issues relating to cultural translation in Kiš, because he grew up in the contested border area between Hungary and Serbia, was the product of an ethnically and religiously mixed marriage, and translated and taught internationally for much of his life.

The present article is focused on the classification of the South Slavic manuscripts of the oldest translation of the Synaxarion. The study is based on 15 copies dating back to the 13–16th centuries and containing texts from September to February. As a result of consistent analysis of the structural and linguistic features, four editions were distinguished. The Bulgarian edition consists of copies of Bulgarian and Serbian origin (Grig. 23, BAN 72, Rum. 319, SANU 53, Pog. 58, Hlud. 189, Рс 705, Hlud. 191, Srem. 323), whose texts, with certain exceptions, reflect the traditional translation of the Church Slavonic Synaxarion, known from the copy Sof. 1324. The Serbian edition includes four Serbian codices (Pog. 463А, Uvar. 70, HAZU III.с.6 and Wuk. 38), whose hagiographic articles have obvious linguistic and compositional differences. The editing of the oldest translation of the Synaxarion, which led to the appearance of the Serbian edition, might have been carried out in the Serbian written tradition. However, we should not exclude the possibility that these linguistic and compositional features were characteristic of the East Slavic copy of the Synaxarion, transferred to Serbia in the late 12th–early 13th century. In the Serbian medieval tradition, the Synaxarion was not only rewritten, but also edited, because the copy Wuk. 37 represents the shortened version of the Serbian edition. South Slavic copies of the Bulgarian and Serbian editions are based on different Eastern Slavic archetypes, suggesting that the copies of the oldest translation of the Synaxarion were transferred to the Balkans not less than two times.

The paper reveals and analyses two illustrations by the Polish painter Henryk Dêbicki (1830–1906) on the Serbo-Bulgarian War, published in the popular Warsaw newspaper Tygodnik Ilustrowany in 1885 and 1886 and unknown to Bulgarian scholars. The illustrations prove that Dêbicki, known for his previous cooperation with Bulgarian revolutionary Hristo Botev, continued to work on Bulgaria-related graphics after the country’s liberation in 1878. The author, however, doubts that the illustrator had experienced the war directly and claims that despite being referred to as the paper’s special correspondent, Dêbicki is unlikely to have visited Bulgarian territories.

This paper discusses the stylistic features of the epic poem The Marriage of Beg Ljubović by Radovan Bećirović. The analysis includes composition, vocabulary and direct speech. The aim of the paper is to shed light on the peculiarities of composi- tion, to record lexical layers and to determine the used models of transmitting direct speech. The ultimate goal is to determine the stylistic features that differentiate the poem The Marriage of Beg Ljubović from other epic poems as well as from other poems from Radovan Bećirović’s opus. The composition of the poem is quite complex, the vocabulary is layered, and the direct speech proves to be a successful stylistic means by which dramatization is achieved. The analytical-descriptive method was used in the paper. Unlike traditional epic poems, the poem The Marriage of Beg Ljubović contains descriptions of psychological states, descriptions of landscapes and descriptions of heroes. Description often replaces narration. On the lexical level, the appearance of neologisms is noticed as a differential feature. Using the forms of direct and indirect speech, the discourses of the heroes are introduced into the poem. Several variations of direct speech have been noted: true, unintroduced and free.

The aim of the paper is to ascertain whether there is a Serbian discourse on Andrić, according to the same criteria Zoran Milutinović uses in his book Bitka za prošlost to ascertain the existence of the Bosniak discourse. Approaching Andrić’s opus through the notion of collective trauma related primarily to the Ottoman and Austro‑Hungarian period in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the author presents in the analysis of books and articles by Nikola Koljević, Vuk Milatović, Rade Lalović, Predrag Palavestra, Vladimir Dedijer, Zoran Konstantinović, Milan Bogdanović and Isidora Sekulić that the Serbian criticism read Andrić in a manner similar to that of the Bosniaks.

Dominantne manjinske kulture i pitanje međukulturne komunikacije

Language and culture are, on the one hand, important factors in identity formation and expression, but they might be as well, on the other hand, tools for political manipulation. Since the end of the 18th and during the 19th century, in Europe, different dominant nations tried to impose a unique language, literature and cultural curriculum in education, neglecting thus the minority and/or regional languages and cultures. The socio-political relation between dominant and non-dominant languages and cultures has nowadays resulted in the mere extinction of the non-dominant entities. The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML) is a European treaty adopted in 1992 under the auspices of the Council of Europe and is meant to protect and promote historical regional and minority languages in Europe. The charter provides a large number of different actions state parties can take to protect and promote historical regional and minority languages. Enlightening, diachronically, the position of the Romanian ethnic minority language and literature in Serbia, as paralleled to the Wallach one, this paper analyses the cultural, and not the political aspects of this chart from a socio-linguistic and literary perspective. While stating that nowadays minority languages and cultures are anyway vanishing to different extends, it is, however, obvious that minority cultures that are backed up by official institutions are more sustainable, due to cross-cultural communication. Bilingualism, as a solution is discussed in terms of education; on the contrary, communities die away, if kept in cultural and linguistic enclaves with no education in both dominant and minority language. The paper also discusses the positive minority language and culture model of Voivodina in contrast to the situation of the Wallach culture which, although ancient and rich, has no writing and lacks in auctorial literary works, and which is, consequently, vanishing away without the involvement of local and regional government. The dichotomy language and/or culture is also discussed in terms of history and Weltanschauung. The communist regime of the ex-Yugoslavia was not less democratic, in respect to minority and regional languages, than any other European nation until the second half of the 20th century, as it has promoted the philosophy of culture as an identity programme meant to keep the nation together. Since 1989, science has proved that values in cultures cannot be imposed from the outside, as ‗transcendental‘, as a commonly acceptable philosophy, but it is the individual who creates and expresses the values, no matter if the individual belongs to a minority language and culture or not. That is why, in the postmodern democratic society the philosophy of culture, which is actually viewed as the socio-political ideology of a nation, has been replaced with an anthropological concept, which does not establish any aprioristic or nationalistic views; on the contrary, cultural values are founded by man as an individual who has the right to express himself. However, dominant languages and cultures still exist and, in the end, if valuable authors shift to another language, as they did in the past, in order to achieve better cross-cultural communication, it is less important how we pronounce their names, for example; for culture, as separated from the socio-political and ideological burdens of the philosophy of culture, the fact is important that a certain author has produced cultural values. Anonymous culture is unacceptable today. This is one more reason for the European countries to accept the European Charter for Regional or Minority Language, while the author should have the possibility to freely choose the language in which he writes.

The subject of this paper is a new historicism reading of the novel Lagum by Svetlana Velmar-Janković. The chronotope of post-war Belgrade and the desti- nies of characters of various profiles in the communist environment are suitable for analyzing the dynamic model of culture and ideological traces in the narrative. The paper deals with the dominant ideologies of the literary template, narrative instances as important elements of the ideology of the text, as well as the problem of the relationship between literary material and its artistic transposition. Narrator Milica Pavlović writes memoirs in her old age, offering a personal view of the past, aware that she cannot present it objectively, which makes her view of the Truth as an unattainable ideology unusually close to the understanding of new historicism. Lagum is a work in which ideological inscriptions can be said to be inconsistent to the extent already announced by its motto, and the notion of the authentic past is revised during the complex processes of writing and reception. The search for a great History, as an objective Truth about the past, remains at the intersection of small, personal histories and their semi-truths.

The ideological sensitivity of the epic, i.e., the fact that, more than other folk artistic expressions, it incorporates and reflects the dynamics of the dominant ideological-political discourse of the societies in which it originates, and is reshaped through direct performances and/or media representation, also makes it a highly representative example of the relationship between state (cultural) policy and traditional culture. Phonograph record were chosen as an indicator of the state (cultural) policy of the second half of the 20th century, a period marked by communism and state socialism, and traditional values, such as singing with gusle. By examining this cultural production, we broach a complex issue of the relationship between official policies and individual actions from different positions, from conforming to ideological-political norms to transgression thereof. As a cultural product of the socialist era, phonograph records of gusle singing reflect the intense negotiation between continuity/preservation and innovation/modernization, which marked the status of tradition in the processes of constructing a new Yugoslav identity. Through considering of some of the aspects of this cultural production (characteristics of the performance, repertoire, visual representation of tradition on album covers, record companies’ policy, etc.) within the framework of the cultural-political, socio-cultural, market-economic and technological-media domains, we point to dialogic relationships with modernity and its official narratives.

Comparative foundation in folklore research should equip us with the necessary tools to disentangle the intricate web of oral pasts of different cultures. This web might be made of the same material, but methods and techniques could vary, and that is the moment in which the comparative scholarship becomes indispensable. This paper aims to show that the dragon-like heroes who exist in Serbian epic poetry under that name, could be a remnant of an older tradition and that we could postulate their existence in other epic poetries, including in particular English epic poetry. The application of the knowledge regarding the interpretations of snakes, dragons and thunder gods in both of these national poetries and their respective folklores, guides the way in which it is discovered that many, if not all, of the interpretations could be applied to the qualities of the dragon-like heroes both in Serbian and English epic poetry. Both Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk and Beowulf can be seen as dragon-like heroes through their virtues of early maturity and enormous strength, through their ability to fight in battle more bravely and more intelligently than other heroes. They are able to beat other dragons due to the qualities which they share with them, they are the champions who are sought in the trying times of numerous kingdoms, and they are the sole protectors of the safety of various mead-halls. The early Christianisation that was carried out on the British Isles probably contributed to the early conversion and negative valorisation of epic heroes of the old, pagan times. Therefore, it takes time to single out the positive elements which are attributed to Beowulf and to put them in the right perspective. However, the epic tradition in the Balkans has had a much greater impact and the negative elements are almost completely diminished. This could be the reason why it might seem rather difficult to put the sign of equation between these two epic heroes. Nevertheless, both of them have the same qualities and exhibit remarkable similarities once they are compared in greater detail: they are both orphaned (historically more or less correctly), they both displayed unusual feats of bravery in their early lives, they are both considered to be of extreme importance to their respective kingdoms as peerless heroes. Yet, at the very first glance it seems almost impossible to say that they are similar. Although many layers have been added over the course of time, the tradition which seems to be shared emerges in both epic poetries in its essential uniqueness, despite different embellishments.

The purpose of the present paper is to expand the spaces for dialogue in two South Slavic literatures – Bulgarian and Serbian – by means of emphasising the typological similarities between two short stories – “First Tear” by Borisav Stankovic and “Last Joy” by Yordan Yovkov. The literary comparison between the two works can be made mainly in view of the characters’ system, and in particular – a comparison between the images of the eccentric, the social outcast – Stankovic’s Dimitar and Yovkov’s Liutskan. Despite that both characters have been created in different decades, the two texts outline the horizons of the difficult ascription of the other, of the differences in a social reality, which speaks the language of hatred, instead of the language of flowers. The two characters’ portraits and psychological characteristics, as well as the suffering as a form of their existential presence make their spiritual comparison most natural.

ТОПОС УПОСТОЈАЊА ОД ПЛАТОНА, ПРЕКО БИБЛИОЦЕНТРИЧНЕ ПРЕДСТАВЕ, ДО ЊЕГОША

The focus of this research is finding and analytical, semiotic-symbolic, theopoetic, and comparative analysis of cosmological and cosmogonic ideas of the origin of the world and human. The field of that analysis includes the ancient cos- mological protology presented in Plato’s Dialogues, the bibliocentric understanding of Genesis in the Six Days of St. Basil the Great and the romantic articulation of the meaning of existence. The romantic pessimistic conception of life, presented through the causes found in the universal principles of creation, is shown primar- ily in Njegoš’s song Luča mikrokozma. The primary goal of the research is to find a poetic-philosophical form of the deepest past of existence, and try to sense a causal sequence in existential development, the latter consequence of which is a pessimis- tic insight into the transience of this determination determined by the inability to know what vibrates outside lethal limitations of being. At the same time, this paper does not focus only on reviewing the historical development of thought about be- ing, but the result of the theopoetically oriented segment of research is reflected in revealing the summarization and transformation of ancient, biblical and romantic cosmological representations in Njegoš’s poetry. Hence, in individual subchapters related to Njegoš’s cosmopoiesis, his philosophical ideas on the source and cause of primordial origin, as well as on the primordial abode of God and being, and its cessa- tion whose cause is the first sin, are presented. In the last segments of the research, the artistic-philosophical concept of the renewal of the primordial embrace with the Creator through song is presented. The research concluded with the presentation of the idea of poetic action as a process of cognition of the primordial origin, and emphasizing that every theopoetically oriented writing represents a new possibility for merging with a transcendental melody. This introduced a new methodology for analyzing texts on metaphysical topics and laid the foundation for future research on the same or similar topics.

The paper interprets the short stories from the collection From the Dark Vilayet in order to decode the mythical and folklore layer in the narrative world of Momčilo Nastasijević. Examining the storytelling technique, the presence of motifs from folk tradition, ritual and mythical symbolism, the archaic character of Nastasijević’s prose is pointed out as its peculiarity, and the phenomenon of modernist prose in folklore clothing is observed. Folkloric elements figure as an indispensable segment for understanding and interpreting the creativity of Momčilo Nastasijević.
