Author(s): Adolfo R. POSADA / Language(s): Spanish Issue: 10/2019

Abstract: Franco Moretti’s theoretical model based on the distant reading not only is useful to think about the role played by the critic in the age of the algorithms and the future of the philological research with the rise of the Post-humanism, but also to manage the collected information and carry out an accelerated and synthetic analysis about the literary phenomenon by means of the massive data sets abstraction (big data). Consequently, in the light of Moretti’s approach, in this work we address a distant reading of the Spanish narrative’s edition panorama in the year 2019. Through the graphs generated ex professo from the data gathered during the inquiry, this article aims to bring out a general vision upon the current situation of the Spanish narrative in terms of the number of literary works edited in 2019, the yearly publishing plan and the authors distribution according to the place and the year of birth, as well as their gender.

Author(s): Diyana Boeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2020

In October, 2019, the School Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (StudyBAS) announced a competition for creating small study-research communities (SSRC) within the framework of the program “Education and Science” financed by the Ministry of Education and Science and performed by BAS. The project made by the teacher of Bulgarian Language and Literature, Diyana Boeva from “Geo Milev” Foreign Languages High School – Dobrich, ”Creative laboratory “Georgi Markov as Text” – has been approved among over eighty project proposals from the entire country. This article showcases aspects of the concrete plan of the Laboratory, examines some challenging opportunities for the school students related to the development of their analytical skills so necessary for studying science. Thus, we overcome the stereotype that the literary field is an unattainable abstraction unrelated to science. Four students with their teacher prove that the name Georgi Markov is appropriate not only for a projection of a research community, but is also a way of legitimizing the humanities in times when purposefully or not the STEM education is being regarded in opposition to studia humanitatis.

Author(s): Angel Angelov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2020

The aim of the text is to historically contextualize Decameron and to analyse the motives for certain behaviour of the characters in several of the novels. The author tries to outline some more general social values, which determine the personal behaviour. Decameron is referred to such events as the famine in 1346 – 1347; it fosters the plague in 1348, and to the changing socio-psychological situation from the end of the 1340-ies in Florence. An answer is sought to a question, topical for our contemporary society as well: what is the sense of security of the inhabitants in the town-republic in the 1340-ies and the beginning of the 1350-ies? The irresistible vitality in Decameron, most frequently expressed in intimacy of the bodies, is considered an effect of the sense of insecurity, which reigns both minds and hearts at the time of the plague pandemic. The value of life is enhanced and the experience of love makes this value tangible. A reference is made to the fabliau from the 13th c. and to The Romance of the Rose. In Decameron is present, although in an idealized form, the actual background of the republican government of Florence.

Author(s): Teodor Penev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 7/2020

Original music plays a leading role in many popular video games. But this is not the only role of original music in video games, and sometimes it’s creators are not experienced composers, but gamers themselves

Cityscapes in Zadie Smith’s NW

Author(s): Andreia Irina Suciu,Mihaela Culea / Language(s): English Issue: 25/2020

The article focuses on the manner in which the space of the city is employed in Zadie Smith’s NW so as to reveal not only a cosmopolitan map of contemporary London, but also to draw a map of the journey of the contemporary individual in finding himself/herself. Smith adopts in NW an experimental manner of introducing the contemporary individual in a strongly cartographied space both at the level of the city and at the level of the body of the text. Thus, through the space of North West London, the author speaks about family, social class, (inter-racial, marital) relationships, (complying or not with) gender roles (and dealing with the defiance against such roles), mobility (at the level of the cityscapes and at the level of the mindscapes), community and possibilities (and impossibilities) of belonging.

Data from a similar study highlights issues related to the Bulgarians' interest in learning foreign languages, their preferences for a particular language and the textbooks through which it is studied, their reception and sponsors.

Author(s): Rosina Kokudeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2020

The article offers a study of horror stories in urban legends from Bulgaria and the Czech Republic in comparative aspect. It proposes a specific classification, which groups horror stories as follows: 1) mysterious events and encounters with supernatural beings, which neither harm, nor help the participants; 2) omens or encounters with supernatural beings, which cause death or other harm to the participants; 3) mysterious signs or encounters with supernatural beings, which help people; 4) evocation of spirits; 5) crime stories: murders or harm – with or without deliberate intention; 6) rumours; 7) parodic horror stories. Parallels drawn between particular stories from the two countries point to the existence of a common folkloric substratum that manifests their universal character and international distribution. Largely, the motifs in those stories result from social life and specific social practices of modern times, but some also have deeply archaic origins.

Author(s): Galia Simeonova-Konach / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2021

This article is devoted to the first translations of Yordan Yovkov's stories in Poland and some problems related to the reception of translated literature in a foreign cultural environment. The works of the Bulgarian writer in the mentioned period were published in Polish magazines with an orientation towards the so-called women's topics. Their literary supplements published novels and short stories by the world's most famous authors at the time and were intended for adherents of women's emancipation, with broad intellectual horizons and good literary taste. The choice of specific works by Yordan Yovkov makes it possible to assess the literary reception and the dominant aesthetic norms in the host culture and literature. The article also analyzes the issues of language and poetics of the text, as well as the attempts of several generations of Polish translators to "overcome" the difficulties of the style and poetics of Yovkov's work.

Author(s): Valentin Stoyanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2021

Through comparative and content analysis, the article discusses the ways in which Byron's poem "Don Juan" is presented in the new textbooks for ninth grade. Numerous explanations and references, as well as the unusual for the myth of Don Juan choice of the obligatory for study of Chapter VIII, require from the authors of the textbooks very careful handling of the scientific and didactic-methodical apparatus. When an approach in accordance with the literary experience of ninth-graders is not chosen, the study articles have a low informative value. The known discrepancies in the analyzed motives make it difficult to compile tests that can be correctly solved by students using different textbooks. In some cases the tasks from the methodical part do not create skills for independent learning, but require repetition of what is written in the theoretical part. Textbooks fail to realize interdisciplinary connections

UNKNOWN 19th CENTURY ATHONITE POEM ABOUT A QUARREL FOR LAND AND CHOLERA

Author(s): Cyril Pavlikyanov / Language(s): English,Greek, Modern (1453-) Issue: 1/2021

The article analyses an Athonite poetical text which describes a conflict between the monasteries of Zographou and Chilandar over landed property situated inside the Holy Mountain. It refers to no place names, but pays special attention to the visit of a nameless Ottoman governor of Thessalonica, accompanied by the consuls of France, Russia and Austria, to Mount Athos. His intention was to solve the difference and to reconcile the two monasteries, but his efforts failed. He then granted a special document (ilam) to Zographou, and met an unnamed ex-patriarch of Constantinople in the monastery of Espigmenou. The authorized representatives of Zographou and Chilandar, Dositheos and Onouphrios, travelled to Constantinople in order to present the case to the sultan’s court, but during their stay in Istanbul cholera struck the city and the final decision was postponed until the end of the epidemy. Three Greek and two Turkish documents make it clear that Zographou and Chilandar were claiming the terrain of Giovantza on the northwest coast of Mount Athos as well as that the conflict was rather important for the two monasteries.

„Apropos за учителката“. Рада Киркович и фигурата на Найден Геров

Author(s): Adriana Spasova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2021

The focus of the research is the discovery of one of the less-known Bulgarian intellectuals of the nineteenth century – Rada Kirkovich, who lived nearly a century (1848, Koprivshtitsa – 1941, Sofia). Her public presence as a teacher, public figure and writer is an important example of the gradual displacement of a woman from the marginal sphere and the breaking of patriarchal stereotypes in Bulgarian society. The article consistently focuses on the letters, memoirs and solemn words of the Revival teacher R. Kirkovich, which testify precisely to the changes in the cultural and political situation during the Bulgarian National Revival. Some of the materials reviewed and analyzed are from the personal archive of Nayden Gerov (Fund 22 of the National Library – Bulgarian Historical Archive). In this library are kept unpublished and unexplored letters (F. 22, I, a.u. 190, l. 1 – 29) of Rada Kirkovich , as well as one of her triumphant speeches on the feast of the Annunciation. (F. 22, I, a.u. 595, 29 – 32b). These entries prove to be productive and not so timid and modest and show the entry point of the educated woman within the strictly regulated limits of the Revival publicity.

Author(s): Tsvetelina Draganova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2021

In the context of the topic of the Competence-Based Approach in teaching Bulgarian language and Bulgarian literature, the current text is based on the understanding of the development of literary competence as a leading goal in the teacher’s work and the need to provide consistent reflection on the essence of the genre of the studied texts as a basic characteristic of the literary field. Taking into account the specifics of the theory of the genre and the ambiguity of some definitions, as well as some fundamental methodological principles, the suggested approach sees the work with the category in literature classes as an opportunity to problematize and to encourage a dialogue, to form and enrich the reading competences of contemporary students. The last part of the text defines general parameters of a possible methodological project on the topic of genre conventions and their connection with certain models of understanding and experiencing nature as a major theme in the world of fiction.
