Le Ruban blanc frappe par le motif dominant du mutisme, à la fois signe de la violence de cette société et son référent principal. Il est le moteur d’une autodestruction, ferment d’un avilissement de la société prête à s’engloutir dans ce qui deviendra la Première Guerre mondiale. Expérience tragique et moyen artistique, il équivaut à un écran noir de la parole. The Ruban blanc is striking for its dominant motif of muteness, at once a sign of society’s violence and its principal referent. It is the motor for self-destruction, and the catalyst for the degradation of a society about to engulf itself in what will become the First World War. A tragic experience and an artistic mode, it equates with the black screen of speech.

Le mythe des Sept Dormants oublié par la Bible, vénéré par le Coran, contient en son mystère la proximité du sommeil et de la mort, de l’éveil et de la résurrection. André Gide dans son Journal et Les nourritures terrestres relie les deux pensées du sommeil. Sleep is sacred to writers : the text dreamt up during the night is revealed on waking.The myth of the Seven Sleepers, forgotten by the Bible but venerated by the Koran, reveals the mysterious proximity between sleep and death, waking and resurrection. In his Journal and Les nourritures terrestres, André Gide links these two elements of sleep.

The aim of the present paper is to compare and discuss translations of cultural references to Polish culture texts in Wisława Szymborska’s poem into four languages: English, French, German and Italian. The analysis encompasses intertextual elements from various culture texts, e.g. poems, legends, folk songs, which are explicitly given in poems. The strategies adopted in all versions are compared and evaluated with a view to determining similarities and differences as well as the factors which conditioned the choice of the strategy. Special attention is paid to lacunary connotations evoked by the references at issue.

The focus of this part of the article is on fictional narratives of Litzmannstadt Getto. The selection includes both endotopic (J. Szpigel, A. Cytryn, Z. Larsson, F. Ka a, C. Rosenfarb) and exotopic texts (L. Epstein, S. Sem-Sandberg, A. Bart). In nearly all of the analyzed materials, unlike in non-fictional record, we deal with the detailed locations of the protagonists’ experience, which is largely due to the genre conventions. Additionally, what explains the low diversity in spatial experience is the fact that the exotopic authors relied to varied extent on historic documentation. Therefore, their topographies of the Łódź ghetto re-write the already existing texts, e.g. authored by the ghetto survivors.

Pejzaż dźwiękowy i praktyki audytywne czasu wojny (wówczas i współcześnie)

The text presents a soudscape analysis of World War II. Here, the term soundscape is understood, after R. Murray Schafer, as acoustic sphere of a place and of its human community which becomes a part of intangible cultural heritage. The analysed soundscape involves wartime audio sphere of both sound senders and recipients. In order to reconstruct the aural world from the years 1939–1945, the article’s author uses autobiographic texts by such writers as Białoszewski, Głowiński, Ligocka, Nałkowska, and Waniek. Further, she later demonstrates the contemporary references to wartime soundscape, and reveals how they function to construct both historical memorials and political history.

O miejskiej przestrzeni autobiograficznej i literackim praktykowaniu Paryża w twórczości Patricka Modiano

The article interprets the urban and, at the same time, literary techniques of Patrick Modiano, a contemporary writer who explores the theme of individual and collective memory. On the one hand, by invoking the writer’s material, cultural and socio-historical context as well as his topographic imagery the text recognizes the position of Modiano poetry in the recent cultural landscape of France, and especially Paris. On the other hand, however, it confronts his narrative tactics with selected strategies of contemporary urban literature and visual arts in order to distinguish the writer’s auto/bio/geo/graphical characteristics.

Kamień i ból. Obraz Jerozolimy w poezji Jehudy Amichaja

The article presents the image of the Holy City of Jerusalem in the poetry of one of the most distinguished Israeli artists, Jehuda Amichai. Here, the imagery includes the dominant motifs of stone, water, and light. Stone, as shown in the images of soaring temples and houses, symbolizes, on the one hand, power and stability; it guards the past and expresses religious zeal. On the other hand, however, it emerges as if from “below” to represent decay, chaos, oblivion, and death. Mourning associates stone with water – through the image of tears or sea – and with artificial light, which again is semantically negative. Furthermore, while the light, for example, helps to reveal the nocturnal glory of ancient architecture, it becomes associated with the lightning – the biblical symbol of God’s wrath. Eventually, it warns us and, at the same time, foresees the impending catastrophe.

W Kanadzie, w domu, w kuchni, na linoleum – o opowiadaniach Alice Munro

The article analyzes two texts by the Canadian Nobel Prize winner, Alice Munro – Lives of Girls and Women and Who Do You Think You Are? Both books draw from the Bildungsroman tradition, and given such origin, they rather seem to represent the genre of short story novel than that of short stories collection. The article’s author concentrates on the manner in which Munro depicts the coming of age of protagonists while using certain aspects of space and the Gothic convention.

O recepcji Baśki i Barbary Zofii Romanowiczowej

The text concerns the most notable, next to Passage through the Red Sea, literary accomplishment of Zofia Romanowiczowa – the 1956 novel Baśka i Barbara. It was the first emigration book to appear on Polish bookselling market, and its two 1958 Polish editions launched a vivid discussion among literary critics, columnists, educationalists, and, the so called, regular readers. It received all due attention for being, first of all, an exquisite and innovative literary text on motherhood. Moreover, however, the book now provides a moving commentary on such current issues as upbringing and education of emigrant children, their identity, bilingualism, and multiculturalism.

The author of the article analyses Zygmunt Krasiński’s views concerning romantic idea of the North. Additionally, he examines the poet’s polemics with Joachim Lelewel. The final conclusion demonstartes that Krasiński developed his own vision of the North, and that it contradicts the generally accepted utopian image which dominated the early stage of Polish romanticism.
