Author(s): / Language(s): Bulgarian,Old Bulgarian

Underscoring the great significance of the research of the remarkable work of enlightenment by the founders of Slavic writing and literature, the Praesidium of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences submitted a suggestion with the Council of Ministers of the People's Republic of Bulgaria to set up a special Cyril and Methodius Research Centre with the Academy. The Bureau of the Council of Ministers (by virtue of decree No7 of 11th February 1980) decided to establish it on 1st March 1980. “The Cyril and Methodius Research Centre with the Praesidium of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is a research organization, a juridical person, seated in Sofia and the purposes of its activities is the following: research work, popularization and propaganda work in Bulgaria and abroad and also the coordination of research work, related to the activities of Cyril and Methodius.” The establishment of a special Cyril and Methodius Research Centre does not mean a unification of the institutes and centres dealing with Cyril and Methodius studies, but only a coordination of their activities. The centre will carry out its own independent research. The coordination will be achieved in accordance with the principles of work adopted by the Academy and will affect also centres that are not in it. In point of fact, this will be attained by a Research-Coordination Council, to be formed by representatives of all scientific organizations (institution, departments and commissions) within whose scope fall studies on the Cyril and Methodius problems. The Cyril and Methodius Research Centre will be in contact also with institutions and scholars abroad, working in the sphere of Cyril and Methodius studies. Here the question is not only to give help to research activities, but also of a close co-operation in working out research problems, the solution of tasks in common and of scientific papers. The centre will arrange meetings and symposia to be attended by foreign experts too, and will assist the participation of Bulgarian scholars in congresses and conferences abroad.

ЛИТЕРАТУРА НА БЛИЗКОТО МИНАЛО

Author(s): / Language(s): Bulgarian,Russian

The academic forum “Literature of the Recent Past (1944-1989)”, organized by the Faculty of Philology at the South West University, combined the efforts of literary theorists of several generations to reflect on that part of Bulgaria’s recent past which has already turned into history. However, this history has not been completed yet in a comprehensive and objective manner. The aim of the forum was to create the proper discourse in which the history of literary theory writing will be attributed a multifaceted pluralistic ring. The project was a part of the attempt to reveal the Bulgarian literary history not only from the point of view “the history of generals”, but from the perspective of cultural identity manifestations on a national scale.

Author(s): Bilyana Borisova / Language(s): Bulgarian

"Worlds and Readings" is a collection of selected articles, studies, and critical texts written at different times and on various occasions but related to the invisible threads of a constant interest in art as a universe of images and meanings, forms and significations, an interest in the book as an autonomous world, in the author as a magnetic figure-embodiment of the mysterious act of creating worlds. Bilyana Borisova is a Doctor of Literature and a lecturer of history of Bulgarian literature after the Liberation at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski ". Her research is on the Bulgarian artistic avant-garde. She authored many articles and studies in the field of Bulgarian literary history and history of culture, many critical texts on works by contemporary Bulgarian authors. She is co-author of "Atlas of Bulgarian Literature 1878-1914" (2003) and "Atlas of Bulgarian Literature 1915-1944" (2005).

Литературна теория. Том 1 Питания и изпитания

Author(s): Nikola Georgiev / Language(s): Bulgarian

Extremely delicate, well-trained and fine man, Nikola Georgiev is an unspoken polemist in the field of science: a rebel who crashes systems. The critic in science directly or indirectly deals with methodological problems; the scholar creates an interpretative context of new literary works and discourages established hierarchies in the literary canon. Nikola Georgiev de-concentrates every routine, and with an infinitely rich rhetorical instrumentation covers the range of almost all forms of speech - from sharp sarcasm and subtle irony to schizophrenic severity and metaphysical reflexivity, thus indicating the limitations and risks of any talk, writing, and theoretical style of literature that deviates from rationality and faith in the social, cultural and human sense of literary science. Nikola Georgiev's work should be published and studied over and over again and this is the reason why he published this book in two volumes. The first includes both the published and unreleased works of the author. He could not reach all that we would like: the volume would have disturbed even the most daring reader. – Sava Savchev

Библейското слово у Йовков

Author(s): Tatyana Ichevska / Language(s): Bulgarian

The present study had no ambition to set up and impose an overall model for consideration of Yovkov’s works. The text focuses mostly on a particular aspect of Yovlov’s poetics – aiming to clarify the mechanisms by which the Biblical corpus is assembled in the writer’s works. It is not the case of only detecting and categorizing the biblical references in Yovlov’s works as Old- or New Testament ones. Rather, the different chapters of the book seek to establish the depth dimensions of the biblical text – i.e. how it forms human relationship with the environment, with the problems of the meaning of life and death, with the good and sin. Such a perspective supposes finding an answer in the course of the study to several important questions: in which cases the direct citing from the Bible is preferred to the allusive reference to certain Bible episodes, and vice versa, which texts of the Holy Book are most frequently called up in the narrative, when do Yovkov’s characters turn their gaze to God, what are the topoi of the desired and realized communication with God; how far is a dialogue possible between the biblically religious characters and motifs and the folklore and mythological notions saturated in Yovkov’s texts on the one hand, and the ideas fashionable in the 20s of the XX century of seeking personal identity on the other.

Романите на Димитър Димов

Author(s): Tatyana Ichevska / Language(s): Bulgarian

This survey is an attempt to clarify certain peculiarities of the poetics of Dimov’s novels, to outline the ways in which in some of his works there is evolution of a love affair, on the one hand and of the man-history-ideology relationship, on the other hand; to see how certain novelistic and film patterns “begin to speak”; to find the different dimensions of human nature; to distinguish what is specific in the interpretation of motives regarded as being classic in Bulgarian literature (for example, the motive of drunkenness, madness, the strive for “another world” and so on). This explains why in certain chapters Dimov’s novels are repeatedly commented on in different aspects. In Dimov’s texts we can follow the process of self-destruction of the characters, regardless of whether they manage to achieve their goals or not. Dimov’s attention is focused on the destiny of the travelling man. All Dimov’s characters, regardless of the social and ideological camp they belong to, leave “their world” in an attempt to fulfill their dream of “another world”. For some of them, this journey turns out to be a pursuit of the concepts of “real life”, which have been established by the cinema and the novels, for others it is a pursuit-adherence to certain ideologies (the world Catholic empire, the world dominance of the God-chosen German people, the creation of a perfect communist order), and for still others it is a pursuit of success and recognition. At the same time, the road is seen as a road to (self-)knowledge, for which the characters often pay with their lives.

Ритмични структури в старобългарски глаголически паметници (= Кирило-Методиевски студии. Кн. 11)

Author(s): Krassimira Kostova / Language(s): Bulgarian

The study is dedicated to the rhythmic structures in the Old Bulgarian glagolitic manuscripts Psalterium Sinaiticum, Codex Marianus and Codex Assemanius. The results are given in three classifications of the isocolic patterns in the Old Bulgarian translation of Psalter and Gospel. The rhythmic models are devided into three groups: simple columns (one-, two-, three-, four-, five-, six-, seven-, eight-, nine-, ten- accented columns), recurrent series and series in frame. Isocolic parallels between the Greek texts and the Old Bulgarian translations are drawn. A conclusion is made that the brothers SS Cyril and Methodius had known the isocolic structures in the Byzantine literature and had preserved them in their translations from Greek into Old Bulgarian language and that the Old Bulgarian and Middle Bulgarian men of letters had adopted in their works the rhythmic structures of the Byzantine rhetorics and poetics.

Poganki i intelektualistki. Bohaterki Błagi Dimitrowej

Author(s): Sylwia Siedlecka / Language(s): Polish

The monograph aims to reconstruct the Weltanschauung of Bulgarian elites in the second half of the 20th century, as documented in the novels and dramas by Blaga Dimitrova written between the mid-1960s and early 1980s. Being anchored in the everyday reality of Bulgarian communism, Dimitrova’s works could be analysed as a specific document of the time, including the dialogue with the national tradition, history, and contemporary events of the social, political and artistic life in Bulgaria. A deconstruction of the ideas contained in the works by Dimitrova allows for their projection onto the background of perennial narratives about the identity of the nation, the attitude towards the Other, the vision of social and cultural modernisation, and the role played in these processes by the national elites.

Езикът на сънищата

Author(s): Kalina Micheva-Peycheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2021

The study analyses texts that refer to dreams, excerpted from biblical, Medieval Bulgarian, literary and folklore works, and from fieldwork material collected personally by the author. The text reveals the most important features of the narrative in the dream, such as models, language formulas, and strategies for representing time. The analysis of the dream-book’s language demonstrates that today the dream-book is designed as a dictionary with its own vocabulary list and specific rules for constructing the interpretive definition, which include semantic, lexical, morphological, and syntactic laws.

Kolory w języku i kulturze bułgarskiej

Author(s): Mariola Walczak-Mikołajczakowa / Language(s): Polish

The monograph considers colour naming in modern Bulgarian in all its possible aspects. The author's inquiries focus on the origins of individual names, and then analyze their contribution to the formation of antonyms, toponyms, chrematonyms and phytonyms. She also presents that part of phraseology whose important component from the point of view of semantics are the names of colours. The linguistic analysis is complemented by a presentation of the names of colours preserved in texts important from the point of view of the history of the Bulgarian language and in folk creativity, as well as a study of the connotations which the names of colours evoke, i.e. the establishment of their symbolic meaning.

Cesty autorské pohádky po roce 2000 v České republice a v Bulharsku

Author(s): Martina Salhiová / Language(s): Czech

This monograph deals with a genre of children’s literature (literature for children and young adults) – the contemporary authorial fairy tales published between 2000 and 2020 in the Czech Republic and in Bulgaria. Using a comparative method and analysis of the works, the monograph follows the development shifts in the genre of authorial fairy tale in both national literatures. The work is selective, focused on the most distinctive types of authorial fairy tales. The division of the monograph into four parts (folklore-influenced fairy tales, diary and calendar fairy tales, lyricized and rhythmic fairy tales, humor and nonsense fairy tales) tends to be more orientational and approximate thanks to the mixing of different literary genres.

Pamięć kulturowa a symptomy traumy. Idea ojczyzny w liryce bułgarskiej po 1989 roku

Author(s): Dorota Gołek-Sepetliewa / Language(s): Polish

The main aim of the monograph is a multifaceted interpretation of the idea of homeland in post-1989 Bulgarian lyric poetry through the prism of the concepts of cultural memory and trauma. According to the adopted model, poetic texts are carriers of cultural and traumatic memory and thus delimit the space in which memory is the object of creation, affirmation, and community consensus. Within the framework of the lyrical dialogue with literary tradition, there is a reconstruction, restoration, or revision of traditional notions of the native. The attitude to the Bulgarian homeland manifested in the lyric is explained in broad historical, social, cultural, and literary contexts. The problematization of the idea of homeland refers mainly to the themes of the Bulgarian (post)transformation's traumatic character and ideological polyphony.

Между литературата и фолклора: девойката с отсечените ръце

Author(s): Vihra Baeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2024

The article is focused on an internationally known plot type: the story of a maiden whose hands were cut off and miraculously restored. The author studies the variants of the motif and their symbolism in Bulgarian milieu, and suggests the hypothesis that it has originated as an element of archaic initiation rites. From there, it permeates the folk tale, where its symbolism refers to the heroine’s passage from a maiden into a wife and mother. At a later stage, this motif is utilized in religious literature and acquires Christian interpretation. In the course of time, a series of borrowings and mutual influences take place in both directions. Thus, the Christian and the folkloric narratives share a common thesaurus of plots, motifs, images and symbols. These refer to an ancient archetypal basis, but preserve their ability to assimilate versatile meanings in different contexts.

The article summarizes the concepts of historicism of the folklore-poetic works established in our science at the end of the last century. It reviews the recordings and publications of Bulgarian folk songs with the motif "A Virgin Rescues Malta" and examines the research and opinions concerning them. The article also analyses the metadata, associated with the already published versions, throwing more light on the context of their existence at the time of their recording in written form.
