Urban Amazement

Author(s): / Language(s): English

“Cities are magical places, however their magic is not evenly distributed” - writes Chris Jenks in his general introduction to Urban Culture: Critical Concepts in Literary and Cultural Studies. As much as we agree with Jenks’s words, we believe that cities, first and foremost, are amazing spaces, and this belief finds reflection in the articles gathered in the present volume. The magic of the cities, together with the meandrous urban structure and the journey through the urban landscape are the interweaving aspects discussed in this book. The picture of the city that emerges from the articles contained in Urban Amazement is one of anintricate structure, involving an individual - a traveller, an inhabitant, a writer or a simple observer - into a network of images that is neverconstant or stable, yet always amazing one with its complexity. The numberand, most of all, the diversity of themes discussed in the consecutive studies seem to correspond to the multiplicity of impressions that the urban landscape appears to exert on the subjects examined in the presented texts. Moreover, just like the streets of the city constantly intersect, as some of the articles in the volume illustrate, the presented texts tend to converge at many recurrent aspects, such as the city’s labyrinthine structure, anxiety which the authors see as connected with the impenetrabilityof urban landscape, and the overwhelming sense of amazement which - in many of the presented studies - the urban space evokes in its residents and visitors.

Saglasje jedne slike-zapisa Maka Dizdara sa filozofijom kompozicije Edgara Alana Poa

Author(s): Mirjana Popović / Language(s): Bosnian Publication Year: 0

This paper explores a “text-image” of Mak Dizdar from linguistic, thematic and philosophical point of view. The polysemy of this image in Dizdar’s style is analyzed at the lexico-semantic level and compared with the principles of composition elaborated by E. A. Poe in his essay The Philosophy of Composition. The similarity and main parallel between the two texts is marked by the aesthetic principle of compatibility. Dizdar’s figurative language provides visual motifs that follow segments of poeticconstructs, corresponding to the understanding of this term within the aesthetic principles of E. A. Poe. In the poetry of Dizdar, the polysemic aspect of his literary images include the historical background, together with elements of a coherent compositional structure in which the lexemes acquire special cultural and moral values. Through comparative lexical and semantic analysis of Dizdar’s writings, the paper investigates communicative and symbolic functions of various lexemes and their effects in the domain of poetic style. The paper gives examples of the creation of a polysemic image in Dizdar’s “text-image” by using a set of specific lexemes. The author of the article observes this as Dizdar’s intention to join visual and linguistic elements together, forging both an idiosyncratic poetic style and a universal message.

Naratívne piesne o zbojníkoch: Príspevok k porovnávaciemu štúdiu, Etnologické štúdie, 22

Author(s): Soňa Burlasová / Language(s): Slovak,English

Slovak researchers have paid close attention to robber songs as a significant genre of Slovak folklore. The texts and melodies of robber songs are widely documented in numerous song collections, usually without any specific thematic classification. For example, Ján Kollár lists in Spievanky several robber songs in the section on Ballads, Romances and Fairy Tales. In his collection of ballads, K. Medvecký devoted specific sections to robber songs under the titles “Robber Songs” and “Gallows Songs” (pp. 109–122, 123–129). Horák’s selection of works of poetry, published in the same period, contains ten robber songs in volume I, section V. (The first song in this section, however, is not a robber song, which is explained in the comment). The big collector of Slovak folk songs K. Plicka focused mainly on lyrical robber songs. In his contribution, he provides examples of his own records and also presents his opinions on the melodies of robber songs. Historian J. Vilikovský5 examined the manuscript of the popular songs “O Surovec Jakubovi, zbojníkovi” (“AboutJakub Surovec, robber”), “Píseň o Jánošíkovi zbojníkovi” (“Song about Jánošík, robber”) and “Píseň o Adamovi a Ilčíkovi, zbojníkoch” (“Song about Adam and Ilčík, robbers”) which were disseminated by copying. The manuscript seems to date back to 1780. Even though these songs are artificial, there are clear relations in terms of texts and motifs between some of them (in particular the song about Jánošík) and folk tradition. Melicherčík’s book Jánošíkovská tradícia na Slovensku (Jánošík Tradition in Slovakia) should be considered a fundamental work about Slovak folklore with robber themes, just like a wide range of his studies published in journals. In these works, Melicherčík supported the perception of robber folklore as a documentation of people’s heroic, progressive and anti-feudal attitudes. This concept was later supported by V. Gašparíková who studied Michael Vdovec, a robber of regional (not national) importance, a typical representative of the robbery epilogue in Slovakia.

As the author of this paper had an active role in the recently published transcription of Divković’s Sermons and scholarly studies about this work, the author has come into contact with interesting questions regarding the potential realization of secondary iotation in Matija Divković’s literary works. To be more precise, the main question is whether it was publication practice to note potential secondary iotation as palatals /ļ/ and /ń/ or as non-fused sequences /l/ + /j/ and /n/ + /j/. The authors and editors of Divković’s Sermons have until now for the most part engaged in the practice of noting separate sequences, but the reasons behind such an approach have not been expounded on in literature. There are two possible and probable objections to differentiating non-fused sequences from palatals in publication practices. The first possible objection is that it is unclear which pronunciation lies behind the graphemes, and the second is that a non-fused pronunciation did not exist in Divković’s time, in other words that it is not accurate to distinguish between non-fused and fused pronunciations.

Dijalog franjevačkih ljetopisa sa suvremenom bosanskohercegovačkom i hrvatskom književnošću

Author(s): Ena Begović-Sokolija / Language(s): Croatian Publication Year: 0

With the aid of intertextuality and cultural-memory theory, this paperan alyses connections between the chronicles of eighteenth-century Bosnian Franciscans and current (20th and 21th centuries) Bosnian-Herzegovinan and Croatian literature (e.g. the artistic prose of Ivo Andrić, Miljenko Jergović ,Josip Mlakić, Ivan Lovrenović, Feđa Šehović, Dževad Karahasan). The paper shows that the Franciscans are particular ‘sites of memory’(Pierre Nora) within Bosnian and Croatian literature, that current literary production gives new meanings to the Franciscan literary tradition in a new framework, and lastly it suggests possible models for and draws conclusions about quoted dialogue.

"Koralina" Neila Gaimana w realizacjach teatru lalek w Polsce

"Koralina" Neila Gaimana w realizacjach teatru lalek w Polsce

Author(s): Maria Janus / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

Maria Janus focuses on theatrical adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s "Coraline" in Polish puppet theatre. The analysed performances were directed by Włodzimierz Fełenczak in Teatr Miniatura in Gdańsk with a stage design by Mikołaj Malesza (opening 2009) and in the Białostocki Teatr Lalek with a stage design by Joanna Braun (opening 2011) and directed by Karolina Maciejaszek in Teatr Pinokio in Łódź with a stage design by Anna Chadaj (opening 2013). In addition, the Author discusses the performance of Rozalinda, written and directed by Krystyna Jakóbczyk in the Teatr Dzieci Zagłębia in Będzin (opening 2012), which was inspired by Gaiman’s novel. Janus presents this performance in the context of copyrights and difficulties of obtaining licenses for use of texts written by popular authors (especially from the Anglo-Saxon region). The author compares the adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s novel written by Fełenczak, Maciejaszek and the translation of the novel’s narration by Jakóbczyk (theatrical situations and visual narration vs. the narration performed live on-stage). Maria Janus also highlights theatrical references from the novel considering meta-theatrical elements that enhance the performance. Janus compares theatrical media used in performances from Gdańsk, Białystok and Łódź with special consideration to the stage design and puppetry techniques. In the second part, the author focuses on the popularity of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline among theatrical directors despite little interest in horror fiction. Puppet theatres in Poland do not produce performances based on modern epic literature, especially those nbased on fantasy. Classical fairy-tales and modern dramaturgy containing fairy-tale motives are still more popular. Furthermore, Janus reflects on the possibility of a change of the herein discussed situation. She further refers to the arguments of Bruno Bettelheim, Stanisław Grzelecki and Katarzyna Slany considering young spectator benefits from the contact with theatrical representation of youth horror literature.

Subwersywny potencjał wypartego

Subwersywny potencjał wypartego

Author(s): Aleksandra Łozińska / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

In the chapter, Aleksandra Łozińska analyses the ways in which the authors of these novels refer to the issues of contemporary cities and the marginalization that occurs within them. The fantastic worlds created in these works are marked by much different constructs. These constructs include binary divisions of cities into official parts that converge with commercial images of the cities and areas hidden from the perspective of the former. These areas are built of redundant matter, inhabited by people marginalized in their own society and governed by practices that deviate from the confines of the official city narratives. This chapter expounds on the ways that these constructs allow for the re-evaluation of marginalized groups and elements (places, objects, fragments of history). Furthermore, methods of opposing exclusionary practices are included by penning subversive practices for the use of urban areas; and—in the case of Gaiman’s and Miéville’s works—by addressing the subject of economic stratification among the inhabitants of London (where metropolitan prosperity is dependent on citizens on the fringes of the social hierarchy). All three novels include characters whose lives are set outside of the mundane culture of consumerism (the life-source of all cities. Their social status becomes an exclusionary barrier to the circle of consumers around them. Thus the author approaches these threads as a type of project in flânerie (in contrast to the common understanding of his contemporaries) while maintaining its relevant critical potential. Against all odds and hardships, the situation of the protagonists is transformed into a positive, beneficial experience by bestowing upon them certain privileges, access to places and the ability to commit practices that are unattainable to the people living within the official sphere of the metropolis / social order. This aligns with the Bell-Hook margin theory therefore it will serve as the looking glass for the analysis of this subject matter.

Polska niezwyciężona

Polska niezwyciężona

Author(s): Magdalena Wąsowicz / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

Magdalena Wąsowicz’s chapter provides an analysis of Polish novels that propose an alternate history to War War II. The author focuses on the way in which these novels change the course of history and reflect on current politics and culture. Three novels are analysed: "Wallenrod" by Marcin Wolski, "Powroty (Coming back)" by Adam Pietrasiewicz and Wojciech Bogaczyk, and "Burza. Ucieczka z Warszawy ‘40 (The Tempest. The Withdrawal from Warsaw ‘40)" by Maciej Parowski. The first two novels display similar sets of images relating to events in World War II and they both focus on the military aspects of the possible victory for Poland. In contrast, "Burza Ucieczka z Warszawy ‘40", demonstrates the power of the Polish spirit and the greatness of the culture of the Second Polish Republic. As a result, a utopian vision of Poland emerges—a vision which can now only be considered nostalgia. Maciej Parowski’s novel is thus a nostalgic retrospection of the perfect, lost world that can become a source of inspiration for future generations.

Umierająca, rozwiązła, szukająca miłości. Przygody Alicji w XXI wieku

Umierająca, rozwiązła, szukająca miłości. Przygody Alicji w XXI wieku

Author(s): Anna Goworek / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

Anna Goworek reflects in this chapter on the rewriting of Lewis Carroll’s novel "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland". Lewis Carroll’s novels—"Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" as well as its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass—are both multidimensional works, considered to be the beginning of fantasy literature and classic children’s novels. They became an inspiration for many modern writers, theater and film directors and game creators. This work focuses on recounting the problem in Carroll’s dilogy in relation to literature (Andrzej Sapkowski’s "Złote popołudnie" and Patrick Senécal’s "Aliss") and television series (Nick Willing, "Alice"). I will discuss the contemporary problems of identity that Alice must confront. By creating the character of the young, stray girl, Lewis Carroll forces self-determination unto Alice. However, Alice from the twenty-first century is an adult woman, who tries to find herself in male-female relationship, tries to reconcile with her father’s departure and tries to deal with addiction. In addition, there is a modification in the creation of Wonderland and the land on the other side of the mirror. In modern remakes there are often scenes of narcotics, violence and with new technologies. Modern authors making genuine stories about a girl lost in Wonderland are usually only focusing on a few threads from novels of the English mathematician. They experiment with Alice’s character, often targeting adults with their books including the experienced reader or recipient who are familiar with Carroll’s dilogy and his biography. With every successive rework of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, there are many intertextual questions raised that are worth investigating by researchers. Perhaps this is a way for modern authors to ward off the stereotypical perception of Lewis Carroll’s novels as merely children’s literature. Despite the countless revisions of the story, contemporary interpretations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass have adapted to the trends of the reader.

W harmonii z naturą i kosmosem? O poezji Antonia Colinasa i Zbigniewa Herberta

Author(s): Maria Judyta Woźniak / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

There exists a deep spiritual union between poems by the Spanish author, Antonio Colinas (born 1946), and those written by Zbigniew Herbert (1924–1998), which is reflected by, among others, seeking harmony in nature and the universe. Although the poetic concept of the two authors often runs in various directions, a comparative analysis gives rise to a dia¬logue which reveals at some points surprising similarities and striking differences. When contemplating nature and arrangement of the universe both authors arrive at a conclusion that in fact the world is not an order, and what may be found in it, instead of the desired sense, is an emptiness which, however, for Colinas as opposed to Herbert, unveils the desired sense to the human being. What Herbert mostly sees is the union of suf¬fering between the human being and nature, whereas Colinas can notice a trace of some order in the omnipresent death.

A re-reading of some of Zbigniew Herbert’s essays is proposed in base of a comparison with texts by Octavio Paz and Rafael Argullol. The following topics are commented: characteristics of the literary essay, the travel as geographical displacement and spiritual experience, the relationship between the individual and history, and the moderately skeptical view of Western culture, present, in different degrees, in the three authors.

Literackie obrazy transformacji. „Poturbowana prawda” w Oszuście Javiera Cercasa, Spisie cudzołożnic Jerzego Pilcha i Sońce Ignacego Karpowicza

Author(s): Agnieszka Kłosińska-Nachin / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The aim of the article is to compare three literary pictures of the political transformation presented in The impostor (2014) by Javier Cercas, Spis cudzołożnic (1993) by Jerzy Pilch and Sońka (2014) by Ignacy Karpowicz. These novels emphasize their discursive character, thereby revealing that the history is always a narration, not an uninfected series of events. The transformation is shown in conjunction with the theme of historical memory and imposture. The transition to the democracy revealed the new ways of falsifying history, in which the culture got involved on the basis of mass communication.
