The appearance of Anglicisms in the Romanian language was determined by the need to designate new extralinguistic realities. Anglicization presents itself as a trend in current languages to allow the influence of English, especially in the vocabulary domain, thus manifesting as a superstratum element. There are Anglicisms used in different variants by speakers or encountered in Romanian media language with changing or fluctuating forms. Currently, we are witnessing a massive influx of Anglicisms into Romanian media language and spoken language, and some of these English words are in the process of entering the lexical fund of the Romanian language, being widely used by speakers.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SEQUENCING IN VIRGINIA WOOLFS’ FLUSH

The article explores the concept of “psychological sequencing”, an important constituting principle of perspective actualization introduced by the linguist Mick Short in the realm of fictional storytelling. Employing a cognitive-linguistic model of analysis, the study aims at specifying the mechanics of psychological sequencing manifestations and its effect in creating immediacy and reader immersion, focusing specifically on Virginia Woolf’s Flush, a biographical work portraying Elizabeth Barrett Browning's cocker spaniel. The analysis explores how linguistic means mirror the order in which impressions arise in the mind of the conceptualizer/focalizer, conveying a filtered and colored view of the story world. Focusing on extensive excerpts of psychological instances in Woolf's narrative, as units of analysis, the study undergoes a detailed examination of lexical, syntactical, and discursive tools, including sensory-related expressions, schema-oriented language, under lexicalization, fronting, agentless passive constructions, mimetic forms of discourse with a view to elucidating the way psychological sequencing contributes to the nuanced representation of the internal limited viewpoint in the fictional narrative under analysis, thus revealing the complex interplay between linguistic choices and reader perception.

This article explores the interconnectedness between the seven principles of persuasion put forward by Robert Cialdini and the syntactic choices behind them. It begins with a theoretical presentation of the principles and then it delves into the linguistic elements encountered in banking advertisements on Facebook, with a focus on types of sentences and word choice. The core of the article is an empirical examination of three advertisements, pertaining to three different years within the COVID-19 pandemics, 2020, 2021 and 2022, which certifies the intertwining of the seven principles with certain words and sentences types.

At present globalization stands out as one of the main features of society. It permeates all sectors of life and one of its effects is the ubiquitous use of English borrowings. This article casts light on the reasons why English borrowings are used in online advertisements of Transylvania Bank. The study begins with a theoretical framework of the English borrowings and then it delves into the reasons why they are intentionally incorporated in the advertising texts, although the Romanian language offers alternatives for all the English terms encountered. English borrowings are preferred to the detriment of Romanian words, as they convey a sense of modernity, of prestige, of blending with contemporary times, increasing visibility and liking, ultimately having the purpose of persuasion.

The theoretical presentation will be followed by examples extracted from the tabloids proposed for analysis. They will include sequences of lexical-grammatical modalizers, modal adverbs (and adverbial locutions) in Romanian and modal particles in German and their role from a morphological, syntactic and pragmatic perspective. The deontic, epistemic and volitional modality points out the degree of obligation or permissiveness of the above mentioned situations which entail a non-assertive character through linguistic sequences, achieving directive-type language acts (order, exhortation).

TOPONYMY OF THE BISTRICIOARA RIVER VALLEY

This study focuses on toponymy in a mountainous region with limited natural resources, with an emphasis on the Bistricioara Valley. It begins by mentioning the origin of the term "toponymy" and the various names used interchangeably for the same field of study. The geographical features of the area are highlighted, showing that in ancient times, the places were less populated, with archaeological evidence of nomadic communities. The study refers to the first toponyms of the region, such as "Ceahlău," and presents historical sources that attest to these names. Various current and historical toponyms reflecting the characteristics of the terrain, relief, and waters in the area are mentioned. The classifications and structures of toponyms are explored, indicating their diversity, such as simple or compound, primary or secondary. Various etymological influences are highlighted, including Latin, Slavic, and Hungarian. The research includes examples of compound toponyms, from those indicating landforms and water to those incorporating prepositions or prepositional phrases.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the presence and place of the illustration on the reading, comprehension and retrieval of a journalistic text describing a dramatic news item. The text may be presented either in an emotionally loaded version, displaying a strong affective intensity of the words (T1), or in a neutral version (T2), with low affective intensity. The participants read one of the two texts on an eye tracker, accompanied by the image placed before the text (G1), after the text (G2) or with no image included. They retrieve the text using an electronic pen, and the production timeframes are recorded. The results show that retrievals vary according to the emotional load of the words, as well as according to the place of the image.

This contribution studies the expression of emotions in the digital discourse produced around the Algerian Hirak. From a corpus of posts and comments on Facebook and videos on Youtube, we propose to analyze, on an enunciative and pragmatic level, the expression of emotion through the strategies employed by writers. To do this, we study, on different levels, the elements allowing to characterize the emotional dimension of the speeches analyzes. These levels ensure a complexity of emotional speech and invite us to scrutinize emotion through referential erasure, dialogism, speech acts as well as elements relating to technodiscourse.

Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird der Metapherngebrauch in deutschsprachigen Online-Automobilzeitschriften untersucht. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf Humanisierungsmetaphern, die eine wichtige Rolle bei der Konzeptualisierung von Maschinen und somit auch Autos spielen. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Fokussierungsmerkmale in Humanisierungsmetaphern überwiegen und wie sich das auf deren Funktionspotenzial auswirkt. In der Arbeit wird von der These ausgegangen, dass konzeptuelle Metaphern unsere Wirklichkeitswahrnehmung maßgeblich gestalten und in Form eines ‚Denkstils‘ tradiert werden. Dieser Umstand wird in der Automobilbranche als Werbe- und Verkaufsstrategie erfolgreich umgesetzt. Die Analyse hat konkrete Denkmuster ergeben, die sich hinter bestimmten Fokussierungsmerkmalen verbergen und zu Werbezwecken eingesetzt werden können.

"GETTING IT ACROSS THE TABLE":THE "MANIFESTLY" DISCOURSE ADVERBIALS REVISITED

The paper reconsiders the semantic and pragmatic roles of a subset of parenthetical linguistic expressions that typically go under a general heading of sentence (or sentential) adverbs (or adverbials) or pragmatic markers. The subset comprises expressions that encode the speaker’s strongest subjective stance to the proposition expressed by the utterance (e.g. the English expressions obviously, clearly, evidently, certainly and surely, and their Serbian counterparts očigledno, jasno, sigurno and svakako). Given the main, theoretic, orientation of the paper, however, the contrastive issue had to be neglected. Still, the paper gives an impetus for contrastive studies, in particular, regarding the encoded linguistic meaning in relation to interactional import. An accumulation of contrastive data, and analyses thereof, will contribute not only to re-evaluating and refining what we have come to know about encoded meaning, but also, and more importantly, to solving the contentious issue of the strict conceptual/procedural dichotomy.

A CURIOUS CASE OF /t/ and /d/ SPIRANTIZATION IN SERBIAN-ENGLISH INTERPHONOLOGY

The paper explores a subtype of the phonological process of lenition, more precisely, the phenomenon of spirantization in the Serbian-English interlanguage system. During the process of spirantization, plosive sounds transform into fricatives and the factors causing altered realiza- tions may stem from various sources, the most prominent being mother tongue interference. For example, due to the specific pronunciation of alveolar stops and fricatives in L1, Spanish learners of English as a foreign language tend to transfer the feature into their L2, causing thus all voiced plosives, regardless of the place of articulation, to transform into fricatives (Zampini 2008). However, the phonological system of Serbian is not characterized by the same processes, hence, the occasional spirantization in the interlanguage system, we argue, cannot be derived from mother tongue interference, yet may be the result of other factors, such as, qualitative hypercorrection. The analyzed corpus was obtained from the recordings of a spontaneous speech by 15 Serbian English-major students at the tertiary level of education. We investigated the instances of spirantization using the methods of acoustic analysis and spectrographic illustrations via Praat, version 6.2.04. The findings indicated that only alveolar plosives (both voiced and voiceless) were spirantized, most frequently in accented position. Regarding the phonetic environment, the word-initial pre-vocalic position, as well as the word-final post-vocalic and post-consonantal position, triggered the highest frequency of spirantization occurrence. Acoustic measurements confirm the initial assumptions regarding the specific nature of spirantized variants [dz], [ts], [ð] and [θ]. The results have important pedagogical implications and provide insights into the complexity of cross-linguistic influence.

EXPLORING ADJECTIVAL FREE ADJUNCTS: A CROSS-LINGUISTIC STUDY OF ENGLISH AND SERBIAN

The paper examines adjectival free adjuncts in English and Serbian using a double and bidirec- tional corpus consisting of novels and their translations in both languages. The objectives of this study are to describe the formal and semantic characteristics of adjectival free adjuncts and to compare these constructions in the two languages based on their translational equivalents. The analysis of adjectival free adjuncts in English and Serbian demonstrates that they can be considered formally and semantically equivalent constructions, as evidenced by nearly 85% of cases showing absolute alignment in translation. In the remaining cases, adjuncts are conveyed through other phrases and clauses. In the translation from English to Serbian, translators resort to non-finite and relative clauses when the adjective is accompanied by a longer complement in English. On the other hand, when rendered into Serbian, adjuncts may change position or be translated as full adverbial clauses with an explicit conjunction to avoid ambiguity. In a number of instances, the comma is omitted in translation, indicating the close relation between adjectival free adjuncts and depictive secondary predicates.

Firstly, she presents essays on lexicon and language variety (§ 1) within the various Slavic languages, then she considers those essays that are more clearly devoted to morphosyntactic phenomena (§ 2). She pays special attention to the evolution of approaches, methods and themes, together with elements of the Italian and international context helping to understand the role of “Ricerche slavistiche” in the spread and development of Linguistics in Italian Slavic studies during the seventy years of the journal’s activity.

The research of concepts is a common issue in cross-cultural studies. Recently in the context of the war between Russia and Ukraine the Russian Diaspora from all over the world tries to express their opinion on the created situation as more and more nations worldwide develop a negative attitude towards the Russian and their language. They speak about secondhand embarrassment and “ispanskyi styd” as a feeling they experience. Russian sources insist that the term “ispanskyi styd” (also Spanish shame) used in Russian in the mentioned context is supposed to have entered the Russian language from English in the globalization period. This article is an attempt to clarify the existing terminology in English on the topic and by doing that to identify the role of the concept denoted by the existing expressions among the important cultural values for the Anglophone world. Also the study can help confirm or deny whether the phrase “ispanskyi styd” in Russian has English roots or it has entered Russian via English.

GETO-DACIANS AND DANUBE ROMANCES IN THE SERVICE OF THE EMPIRE. THE ARDABURS FAMILY (5TH – 6TH CENTURIES)

As a result of the cohabitation between the free Dacians from the Carpathians and the Germanic Goths here in migration, we can formulate some quite plausible hypotheses about some Geto Dacian and Daco-Roman characters, with a Gothic or Visigothic allure, from the Lower Danube, like Ardabur senior, Aspar Ardabur, Ardabur junior, Plinta, high military dignitaries and with positions of important influence at the imperial court in Constantinople. Later also of a prominent Romance writer and historian of the 6th century, Iordanes (Iordannis). They could constitute a reason for justified historical pride, thus completing the thread that seemed irreparably broken at the end of the ancient, unknown history of the Romanians. A brilliant episode was also distinguished by the possibility of the exceptional personality of Ardabur Aspar, a Gothicized Geto-Dacian, then re-Romanized in the Eastern Roman Empire, by the historical chance of maximum individual scope to become emperor in Constantinople in the year 457. His possible descent from the North-Danube Getic Bure gives us the opportunity to put him in line with the special personality of Burebista, the king of a once great state, and to rightfully see him as another successor of the Thracian-Getic genius from the north Danube.

Romanian toponymy evolved over the years and millennia from a linguistic point of view. Topical names appeared at certain historical moments and are associated with certain moments in the material and spiritual life of people, leaving a trace of society from different eras. The research of Dobrudgean toponymy highlights current problems and aspects in the general and Romance linguistics. These problems and aspects have materialized in analyses and interpretations of distinct toponymic facts and phenomena, as a result of the complexity of investigation methods and principles at the contemporary level. The way of life of the inhabitants, the relations and the direct links between people and society, etc. played a special role in this process. We can assert that the cities in Dobrogea are very stable, regardless of their ethnicity, and the toponymic names provide an additional proof of the continuity and stability of the Romanian society in medieval and contemporary Dobrogea.

The class of diminutives on the online environment is characterized by evolution, mostly a quantitative one, in the sense that it is constantly enriching with recent and neological diminutive forms. In the present article, the term ʺdiminutiveʺ will reffer to words that convey the notion of ʺsmallnessʺ which can be interpreted literally or metaphorically, by adding a diminutive suffix (in our case ʺ-elʺ) to a base word. The aim of the present descriptive study is to make an inventory of some new diminutive forms containing the suffix ʺ-elʺ excerpted from the Internet in the last five years and in this way to illustrate the creativity of Internet users. The focus will be on morphological cathegories of the diminutives: nouns, adjectives, adverbs and interjections. These will be presented along with the context in which they were used, all of them being selected from the virtual space, from different online conversations.

This article aims to analyze the pragmatics of the advertising discourse. We live in a world in which advertising and the advertising discourse have a major significance. There are advertising messages or discourses with a pure informative purpose, but there are also other patterns, such as: the metalinguistic advertising discourse, the poetic advertising discourse, the advertising discourse with an expressive or emotional function, the advertising message with a conative or phatic function. Some forms of advertising discourse have cognitive and communicative functions. By means of this article, we tried to sketch a general view on the advertising discourse and its functions. We illustrated these theoretical examples with a series of illustrative examples, featuring some of the most famous commercials. To create a brand implies, in the end, concentration, efficacy, efficiency and coherence, all these dimensions and valences being present in the advertising discourse.
