Hrvatski na uvjetnoj slobodi

Author(s): Ivo Žanić / Language(s): Croatian

Author(s): Ivana Bašić / Language(s): Serbian

Images in Words. Lexical Iconicity of the Serbian Language in the Context of Slavic Mythology: Metaphors of Life and Dead is the first study of the relationship between lexical iconicity and the linguistic world picture in the Serbian language. The research is based on the premises that language is a specific representation of the inner form of thinking, which is indicative of a particular world-view; that semantic systems change in time, but in that passage from complex to categorical thinking the traces of complex thinking stay preserved in lexical iconicity and reveal themselves in the articulation of repressed semantic components in the given context; that not only metaphor and metonymy play an important role in the transformations of semantic systems as mechanisms of understanding and transposing ideas from one field of knowledge to another, but also iconicity and the existence of a number of universal imaginative schemes.

Historia języka w XXI wieku. Stan i perspektywy

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

The volume constitutes the gleanings of the 1st Congress of the Historians of (a) Language which was held in Katowice. The purpose of this scholarly meeting was to present the scholarly accomplishments of historical linguistics which were achieved heretofore and to present the most important research plans of the discipline. Almost 150 scholars who represent this field participated in the Congress. The participants engaged various themes which arranged themselves in the following subject blocks: I. The methodological dilemmas of modern diachronic linguistics II. Historical-linguistic research and the universal problems of linguistics III. The sources which are used in diachronic research IV. Lexicology and lexicography V. The regional Polish language and the dialects VI. Communication. Genology. Stylistics VII. The historical-linguistic knowledge in university education The volume features a very important supplement in the form of a transcript and a report of two panel discussions which focused on the following problems: 1. “The research and methodological challenges of historical linguistics”; 2. “The teaching-related tasks of historians in reference to the national communicative community in the past and in the present”. The opinions of the representatives of the scholarly community about the position of diachronic linguistics in linguistic research, the opinions about the fundamental problems and dilemmas are certainly relevant to all people who are interested in the progress of the research in (a) language. The value of the present volume is further enhanced by the last part which is devoted to the events which celebrated the conferring of the name of a distinguished linguist, Irena Bajerowa, to the Institute of the Polish Language of the University of Silesia. The opinions of the Friends, Family Members and the Students which were preserved represent the scholarly and, at the same time, the cordial nature of this significant event.

Input, Process and Product: Developments in Teaching and Language Corpora

Author(s): / Language(s): English

This volume is a collection of 21 academic papers selected from the ninth biennial Teaching and Learning Corpora conference that was held at Masaryk University in the summer of 2010. The papers were selected through a double blind reviewing process by the academic committee of the conference. The book deals with a variety of uses of language corpora in foreign or second language teaching and learning, and is divided into four parts. Sections 1 and 2 look at corpora as input, first exploring general issues of how they can inform language teaching, and second describing how this can be put into practice and evaluating concrete uses of corpora with learners. Sections 3 and 4 look at learner corpora as output: this includes comparison with native-speaker corpora to identify ‘errors’ or areas of difficulty, but also shows what learners can and do know at different levels of proficiency, and what this tells us about the learning process.

INTERFERENŢE CULTURALE ROMÂNO-MAGHIARE

Author(s): Imola Katalin Nagy / Language(s): Romanian

This volume focuses on the problem of literary and cultural paraellisms between the Romanian and the Hungarian cultural and literary phenomena. Beyond some general aspects related to the topic, the first part is dedicated to the problem of intercultural communication between the Romanian and the Hungarian cultural milieu in the inter-war period, with a special emphasis on the issue of Transylvanianism. We try to identify the reasons for which this ideology failed to become one of the main facilitators of open communication between the Romanian and the Hungarian cultures. We also hint at some contemporary echoes of Transylvanianism and the changes that have occurred over the past few decades. We wanted to make a presentation of the main regional ideologies of the Transylvanian cultural and spiritual life in the inter-war period. The Hungarians’ Transylvanianism and the Romanians’ creative localism or ardelenism alike offered a wide range of key concepts and ideas that shaped/and were shaped by the cultural context of the time. Both regionalisms – Romanian and Hungarian – shared many of these concepts and ideas, although they had never really sustained an open and efficient communication, due to a series of causes. The shifts that occurred in the self-defining strategies, the communication breakdowns that characterized the relationships between the two cultural milieus and intellectual circles, the identity discourses that can be spotted in the media of that time, and the movement known as Transylvanianism are all approached with the purpose of identifying the causes that hindered (and perhaps still hinder) real and efficient communication between Romanians and Hungarians. We also attempt to offer an overview of the effects of the cultural and spiritual flourishing that marked the turn-of-the-century Vienna on the Romanian and the Hungarian cultural discourse. We focus on the most important phenomena that the Romanian and the Hungarian cultural discourses borrowed from the Viennese modernity at the turn of the century. Among these, one can cite the types of writers, literary topics (such as the theme of the Family, of strong women, the emergence of the human psyche in literature, the figure of the estranged, etc.). The second part of the volume is dedicated to the most important thematic parallelisms between the Hungarian and the Romanian prose writings, by analysing topics and/or motives like war, womanhood, wealth, freedom and the symbolism of the mountain, etc.

Clarifying Digital Terms. NATO StratCom COE Terminology Working Group

Author(s): Neville Bolt,Leonie Haiden,Julian Hajduk,Elīna Lange-Ionatamišvili,Gundars Bergmanis-Korats,Giorgio Bertolin,Robert Hobbs,Louise Marie Hurel,Charles Kriel,Federico Lucidi,Sanda Svetoka,Johannes Wiedemann / Language(s): English

Digital technologies and means of communication have become a central part of politics and social organisation. The role of AI, big data, and machine learning is growing, as are ethical, privacy, and security concerns which these technologies bring with them. The purpose of this glossary is to encourage the use of precise and simple language that bridges the terminological divide between policymakers, soldiers, tech companies, academics, and programmers. It is at the intersection of their respective fields, that digitalisation’s potential for positive change as well as ensuing challenges can be recognised and addressed. Sharing a common vocabulary is the first step. As digitalisation continues to transform our societies, it has also influenced the language used to describe this process. Terms related to the developments and possibilities brought on by digitalisation can seem confusing. Digital vs. cyber vs. online, AI and machine learning lack distinction in popular usage and understanding. An additional layer of complexity is added by the multiplicity of language communities that exist in this field: from programmers and computer scientists, to communicators, politicians, militaries, academics, and the general public.

Govor grada Sarajeva i razgovorni bosanski jezik

Author(s): Senahid Halilović,Ilijas Tanović,Amela Šehović / Language(s): Bosnian

There has been no systematic research into the dialect of Bosnian spoken in the city of Sarajevo. The aim of this book is to motivate different linguistic research in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. First of all, a detailed description is required for the traditional speech of the city. Up till now there have only been sporadic efforts to do this. Onomastic and lexical material in Sarajevo is also yet to be explored. Finally, any sociolinguistic research will provide precious data on the multi-layered division of urban speech. The first part of this book presents the speech of Sarajevo within the southern sub-dialect of the eastern Bosnian (ijekavski-šćakavski) dialect, followed by data on the speech of Sarajevo from almost all the sources available for the past three centuries. The material includes the 18th century Annals by Bašeskija, Šurmin’s work from the late 19th century, and various questionnaires from the National Museum. The speech of Sarajevo was partly covered by various writings on dialectology, particularly papers by D. Brozović, and the now totally vanished ekavski-ijekavski dialect spoken in Bjelave, an old quarter in Sarajevo, is presented through data obtained by a survey conducted in the 1980s. This completes all the principal data about speech in Sarajevo until the end of the 20th century. The second part of the book presents specific lexical forms characteristic of the material and spiritual culture of Sarajevo. Some real-life categories as markings of material and spiritual culture maintain dual forms.Semantic analysis of micro-toponyms across Sarajevo is extremely complex, due to the city’s eventful history, different influences, major changes, conflicts and irreconcilable contradictions. This part contains a systemic presentation and a linguistic-cultural commentary on lexical forms and phraseology. The third part is an attempt to shed more light on the under-researched lexical wealth of the conversational style of the Bosnian language. For that purpose, a considerable lexical corpus was amassed using surveys and interviews, mainly in Sarajevo, and the lexemes of Bosnian conversational style were then divided into neutral and marked ones. The aim was to show their principal features in terms of semantics, structure, and function, but also to show that the lexical wealth of the conversational style corresponds functionally to its needs – which is why none of its segments may be prescribed. That is why this section is followed by an analysis ofthe traditionally ignored taboo-words and jargons. A dictionary of lexemes and phrases completes this book, particularly because all the meanings of lexemes and phrasemes were left unchanged from the time when they were collected, some ten years ago. Moreover, the usage labels were not changed despite the slight changes that have happened in this area, particularly in relation to neologisms that have since lost that status. Namely, the intention was to motivate all future researchers into the Bosnian language to become familiar with the meanings of the lexemes at the time they were collected, allowing people to compare them with present lexemes and thus identify any changes in their meaning or use. At the same time, this allows for scientifically founded conclusions to be drawn on the changes in the lexical unit, specific to the conversational practice of any language, including Bosnian. Finally, our research shows the wealth of the lexical fund of colloquial Bosnian, but also indicates the need for more comprehensive and versatile research – and the results of this work may serve as an important incentive.

Author(s): / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian

The Atlas of Czech Dialects - Nominative Singular Feminine is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration between experts from the Dialectology Department of the Institute of Czech Language of the Czech Academy of Sciences and experts from the Department of Geoinformatics of the Faculty of Science of Palacký University in Olomouc. The Atlas presents not only the dialectal phenomena that are declining and disappearing, but also the phenomena that are still alive. The main analytical dialect maps show the morphological differences in the territory of the Czech national language. The accompanying maps of spelling variations illustrate the overall territorial picture of the word form under study. In addition to the dialect maps and brief expert dialectological comments, the atlas contains texts describing the realities of former rural life, farming methods and customs, infographics, links to audiorecords and illustrative images created by artificial intelligence tools. The expert explanations are complemented by rich dialectal material, while the popular format of the texts ensures accessibility to a wide range of people interested in our dialect. Data from the Questionnaire for Research on Czech Dialects, processed into thematic maps, are brought to life by photographs taken by dialectologists half a century ago during field research.

Hodnocení variabilních mechanismů hlasu, jazyka a řeči v kontextu logopedického a neurovývojového bádání

Author(s): Kateřina Vitásková,Jana Mironova Tabachová,Lucie Nohová / Language(s): Czech

"The collective monograph is focused on the investigation of selected physiological and pathological mechanisms of voice, language and speech in the context of logopedic (speech language therapy), special edcuational and neurodevelopmental, psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic research. These are twelve selected areas of specifics and deviations of communication, including respiration, phonation and resonance, articulation, intelligibility and understanding of speech, phatic functions, lexia and pragmatics of communication, both in the context of their development and acquired and so-called symptomatic (secondary) speech disorders. Individual sub-areas were examined with a primary emphasis on speech therapy and special pedagogical diagnostics and therapy using a mixed methodological research design, using special instrumental, test, registration and specific therapeutic methods, some of which will be adapted or newly created during the project. The publication has a transdisciplinary intersectoral character – it covers both the educational and clinical and counselling environment, uses newly adapted experimental and diagnostic methods and therapeutic materials and extends the current state of knowledge in the field of determinants of development and communication disorders in its individually and situationally variable form. The presented research responds to the long-term pandemic situation, and thus to changes in the assessment of changes and deviations in communication in the context of prevention and impacts of COVID-19, including innovated research methods and its enrichment with a combination of face-to-face field and distance electronic formats."

Pragmalingvistické a sociopragmatické pohledy na vybrané komunikáty (nejenom) mediálního diskurzu

Author(s): Jindřiška Svobodová / Language(s): Czech

"The authors of the monograph deal with pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic aspects of communicative activity in three relatively separate units. The first section examines the process of pragmaticalization of particles and the importance of their acquisition in foreign language acquisition and the formation of communicative competence. In the second section, the means used as a tool of impoliteness and verbal aggression are investigated. The so-called discursive politeness methodology based on the concept of face is applied to authentic texts and evaluates politeness strategies against the background of existing relational networks of the current social and communicative situation. In the final part of the thesis, the authors, using the methods of critical discourse analysis, carry out a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of media texts dealing with the issue of migration."

Breton et gallo. Situation sociolinguistique actuelle des langues de Bretagne

Author(s): Anna Třesohlavá / Language(s): French

This book is introduces the current language situation in Brittany. The Brittany is a French region distinguished by a particularly interesting language situation. It?s a region with two local languages (the celtic Breton in the western part and the romance Gallo in the eastern). Both of these languages have been influenced by the repressive language policy from the times of the French revolution. Those measures led to the language shift. Since then, the number of the users of those languages has been decreasing. Nevertheless, since the 70s, the perception of the breton identity has been changing and the population has been progresivelly expressing its interest in the regional languages. Nowadays, we can observe the phenomenon of the revitalisation tendences in both of the languages.

Text Segmentation for Menzerath-Altmann Law Testing

Author(s): Martina Benešová / Language(s): English

The leading topic uniting the texts in this monograph is the Menzerath-Altmann law and testing its potential validity on samples in different languages (in our case, in Chinese, Japanese, and Czech), on spoken as well as written samples and on samples with newly established, pioneer unit concepts. The Menzerath-Altmann law is reported to be capable of being applied on such variety of language aspects and is, therefore, regarded as a language universal. The monograph, this way, summarizes a follow-up research based on other pilot experiments held not only in the mentioned languages, and attempts to test the concept of the language universal.
