Koncepcje Wspólnej Europy na przestrzeni wieków

Koncepcje Wspólnej Europy na przestrzeni wieków

Author(s): Karolina Świrska-Czałbowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2005

Różnorodność i niepowtarzalność, a mimo to pewna wspólnota decydują o istocie Europy.” Konrad Adenauer

Niektóre aspekty bankowości centralnej na przykładzie Europejskiego Banku Centralnego i Systemu Rezerwy Federalnej USA

Perspektywa poszerzenia strefy euro o Danię, Szwecję i Wielką Brytanię

Perspektywa poszerzenia strefy euro o Danię, Szwecję i Wielką Brytanię

Author(s): Lesław Migalski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2005

W tekście podjęto problem ewentualnego przystąpienia do strefy euro trzech krajów Unii Europejskiej: Danii, Szwecji i Wielkiej Brytanii.

Author(s): Filip Smutný / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 1/2023

Being able to put oneself in another's situation is truly a mastery skill that builds a manager's personality, team spirit and mutual trust. The aim of the paper is to declare the real importance of an empathy in a managerial work, as well as to present the results of empathy quotient on a sample of Slovak managers. For the examining, we used the Baron-Cohen and Wheelwright self-assessment test of empathy on a sample of 707 Slovak managers. Through our research, we conclude that Slovak managers have an above-average level of empathy. These positive findings opens up space for its implementation in every day work and also to reevaluate value preferences by knowing what makes a real sense. Secondary and primary survey results declare the fact that the right amount of empathy is not a sign of weakness, but of a person's greatness

We Dislike Them, so They Lie: Partisan Bias in Perception of Accuracy of Factual Claims

We Dislike Them, so They Lie: Partisan Bias in Perception of Accuracy of Factual Claims

Author(s): Artsiom Klunin,Matúš Sloboda / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The aim of this paper is to investigate how and to what extent partisan bias affects the perceived accuracy of factual claims made by politicians in Slovakia. In our research, respondents (N = 122) were asked to create their own ranking of the credibility of politicians. The respondents were later asked to estimate the average factual accuracy of the most trusted, moderately trusted, and least trusted politicians. Data from the non-partisan fact-check project Demagog.SK was used as the baseline data for testing the actual factual accuracy of politicians. This survey experiment also tests the effect of anchoring. The results suggest no positive partisan bias, and, hence, the absence of partisan favoritism. The study shows that people tend to believe that politicians use of false claims disproportionately more often than in reality.

The model of influencer and customer reviews impact on customer’s purchase intention in the context of sustainable development

Author(s): Ivana Puspita,Edi Komara,Aini Kusniawati,- Tabrani,Surachman Surjaatmadja / Language(s): English Issue: 11-12/2022

In this research, we seeks to replicate and build upon prior study models. Influencer reviews carry more weight than customer reviews when it comes to purchase intention due to trust, statistics, and perceived value, as suggested by a recent study. However, statistics on customer reviews do not appear to make much of an impact. Generally, before making a purchase, prospective buyers shop around and gather information to make informed decisions. eWOM (electronic word-of-mouth) is a go-to source of trustworthy information. Both influencer reviews and customer reviews are categorized as eWOM. Our study is conducted to determine more influential reviews, examining the opinions of 100 respondents. Split into two groups of fifty (50), the participants are either influencer or customer reviewers. All aged between 17-40 and students by occupation. Data analysis has been performed using SEM-SmartPLS 3.0. Sample selection was based on purposive random sampling. In analyzing variables such as eWOM, trust, statistics, perceived value and purchase intentions for sustainable development, this research aimed to identify the more impactful reviews – those from customers or influencers. Ultimately, the data value from influencer reviews proved higher than customer reviews, indicating their dominance in this area.

Expatriation-enhanced competencies: A multiple case study of technology-based entrepreneurs

Expatriation-enhanced competencies: A multiple case study of technology-based entrepreneurs

Author(s): Hilka Pelizza Vier Machado,Jörg Freiling / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

PURPOSE: Facing the research gap of entrepreneurial learning by self-expatriated technology-based entrepreneurs, the purpose of this research is to explore those entrepreneurs’ beliefs and experiences across expatriation to identify the enhancement of their competencies. METHODOLOGY: Within a qualitative and exploratory multiple case theory-building approach, data was collected from twelve technology entrepreneurs from Brazil, Mexico, Germany, and Israel that went to the following destination countries: Spain, United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Ireland, Turkey, and the Netherlands. With interview data as the primary source, the data analysis rests on a qualitative content analysis. FINDINGS: Data allows structuring techpreneurs’ experience of expatriation along the following steps: (a) arrival in the destination country and initial process of socialization, (b) engaging in activities to get familiar with the culture of the destination country, (c) the gradual comprehensive understanding of the new context, and (d) comparisons between the home and destination country. Expatriation had an evident impact on the technology-based entrepreneurs that materializes in three groups of competencies: entrepreneurial competencies, knowledge and innovative competencies, and international competencies. Entrepreneurial competencies relate to relational and behavioral skills and the learning of doing business in different contexts. Concerning knowledge and innovative competencies, creativity, learning new techniques and international innovation environment stand at the fore. Finally, international competencies relate to the acceptance of different cultures (multicultural learning and perception of cultural differences), developing a sense of an international community and an international innovation culture. IMPLICATIONS: This study evidenced the influence of expatriation experiences on the training of skills of technology-based entrepreneurs, in a specific approach to entrepreneurial, innovative, and intercultural competencies. The research portrays self-expatriation as an opportunity for technology-based entrepreneurs to develop different competencies being helpful to innovate, to manage business and to operate in international markets. Universities and innovators may recognize their discretion to develop programs for people like former students who want to self-expatriate. In the same vein, government can design policy to attract self-expatriate in innovations hubs, considering that local inhabitants can benefit from the cultural exchange. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: This study contributes to better understanding the influence of self-expatriation experiences on the development of skills of technology-based entrepreneurs. Compared to previous studies, it advances research through providing a wider range of learning from expatriation experiences beyond the effect of internationalization on market knowledge and cultural aspects. Furthermore, this study focuses the process, not the results of self-expatriation to understand entrepreneurs’ learning.

Team members’ direct participation in decision-making processes and the quality of decisions

Team members’ direct participation in decision-making processes and the quality of decisions

Author(s): Ryszard Rutka,Piotr Wróbel,Ewa Wycinka,Małgorzata Czerska / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

PURPOSE: Do teams manage to reach better decisions than those made by individuals? Numerous studies have delivered inconclusive results. Meanwhile, participation in decision-making can take various forms and is not limited to consensus group decisions, and the influence of the various forms of participation on the quality of decisions has been less frequently examined. The aim of the research was to determine the effect on decision quality of changing the form of direct participation in the decision-making process in the case of complex, multi-stage problems. METHODOLOGY: The article presents the results of a long-term experiment in which 598 teams of 2,673 people took part. The participants were asked to solve a decision problem using three decision-making styles: autocratic, consultative, and group. The participants played the role of members of a newly established project team that must plan its own work. The task concerned a problem that requires the analysis of a number of dependencies between sub-problems, in contrast to eureka-type problems. The decision problem was new to the participants, making it impossible to apply known solutions; a creative approach was therefore required. The decision was then compared with the optimal solution established by experts. Decision quality was based on the deviation of the proposed solution from the optimal solution. FINDINGS: The results of the experiment confirm the significant synergistic potential of increasing direct participation in decision-making for complex, multi-stage problems. A significant proportion of teams made better decisions as a result of increasing direct participation – replacing autocratic decisions with consultative and group decisions. The quality of consultative decisions was roughly in the middle of autocratic and group decisions. By using group decision-making, teams made better decisions than the average individual decision and came closer to the decision quality achieved by the best team members. This effect was universal, observed both in the strongest and weakest teams. It should be remembered that, while group decision-making has the potential for synergy, it is not always achieved. Group decision-making markedly reduced the risk of making highly misguided decisions, and it can be reasoned that direct participation protects against serious mistakes more than it guarantees the best possible results. IMPLICATIONS: Team leaders should be familiar with different decision-making styles, their advantages and disadvantages, and the scope of their application. This research suggests that increasing team members’ participation to a consultative role and even better, a full participatory role, increases the quality of the decision. With the growing complexity of organizations that have to deal with accelerating change, technology development and increased competition, creating structures that can flexibly respond to the challenges of the environment requires the participation of team members at all managerial levels. The use of consultative and group decision-making styles for complex and multi-stage problems supports this process. The group decision-making style can bring better quality, but it has its limitations and it is not always possible to use it. It requires a team of highly competent people who identify themselves with the interests of the organization. Otherwise, the consultative form will bring better results. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: For the first time, an empirical study analyses the case of consultative decision-making, in which the team leader consults the individual opinions independently to finally come up with a final “team” decision. This approach is widely used by team leaders and managers in the field. This study shows that this approach constitutes an improvement over the individual (autocratic) one but still falls short of the group decision-making approach. Finally, this study which has been done with the largest number of participant teams (598 teams, 2,673 individuals), professionally active post-graduate students and over a 24-year period allows a sound statistical confirmation of the proposed decision quality improvement when moving from individual to consultative and group decision-making styles.

Bankers' job stress, job performance, and job commitment trajectories during the COVID-19 pandemic

Author(s): Sanjoy Kumar Roy,Md. Rahat Khan,Nazrul Islam Shanto / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

PURPOSE: The global COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted multiple sectors across industries and regions, including medical services, financial institutions, and others. The escalating global pandemic in both emerging and developed nations has resulted in the implementation of stringent lockdown measures and unparalleled disruptions to economic activities. Consequently, individuals have become accustomed to relying on banking operations as a routine aspect of their lives, regardless of the circumstances. Learning how bankers engage with customers in response to the given circumstances would be intriguing. Hence, the study aimed to unearth the relationship between bankers’ job stress, job performance, and job commitment, as well as the stress-based job performance and its impact on job commitment during the second to third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in an emerging market. METHODOLOGY: A number of 287 data (response rate 71.75 percent) were collected by online platforms due to the COVID-19 pandemic through the simple random sampling technique. The exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling were run to test the proposed research framework with the help of MS Excel 2007, SPSS 22.0, and AMOS 23.0. FINDINGS: The findings showed that bankers’ work-related stress has a positive impact on job performance but no relationship with job commitment; acute stress has a negative impact on job commitment but no significant relationship with job performance; and stress-based job performance has a significant positive impact on job commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic. IMPLICATIONS: The outcomes of this study provide value to the field of behavioral science by introducing the phenomena of COVID-19 in the context of bankers and emerging economies. The demographic variables and the revealed relationships of bankers’ job stress, job performance, and job commitment trajectories would help policymakers rethink stress management practices and policy building in the bank job and the long-term relationship building with their existing employees. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: The novelty of the research is the COVID-19 phenomenon and an emerging economy’s bankers’ context.

Principles for Teaching Economics and Social Science Education Discourse

Author(s): Nazaruddin Ali Basyah,Irham Fahmi,Ruaida Abdul Majid,Sakdiyah Yunus / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2023

The research employed critical discourse analysis of official social science documents and three prominent lines of social science textbooks. Despite the recent emphasis on incorporating real-world economic practices into school financial education, the findings reveal that new social science textbooks exhibit increased criticism toward the market economy. Furthermore, they tend to avoid addressing and analysing the socio-economic issues of the present day. The study concludes by emphasising the need for economic education in schools to focus on contemporary social and financial problems.

Author(s): Granit Agustina,Eeng Ahman,- Disman,Janah Sojanah,Boyke Setiawan Soeratin / Language(s): English Issue: 11-12/2022

This study aimed to determine the role of organizational happiness character (OHC) towards lecturer performance with organizational citizenship behaviour as a mediation variable. The study was aimed to lecturers at private universities in Greater Bandung, with a total number of 5,435 lecturers out of 21 Private Universities. Data was collected using a questionnaire with a differential semantic scale in 2021 and 2022. It has met the minimum sample requirement needed for SEM-PLS analysis. The study is devoted to analiysis of the lecturer perception of organizational happiness, organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and lecturer performance, testing 4 hypotheses. The measurement scale in this study uses differential semantics which is an effective measurement tool for attitudes. The analysis of the research hypothesis shows a relationship between OHC and performance, and OCB variables affect the improvement of lecturer performance. The relationship between OHC and OCB has also been confirmed and shows a positive and significant relationship. Hence, it can be said that the variable OCB is a mediator for the effect of the variable OHC on employee performance. In this study, organizational citizenship has a partial mediating effect in improving lecturer performance.

Results. The article considers the necessity of forming non-financial reports of enterprises. The essence, purpose, tasks of reporting on sustainable development in Ukraine and the EU, in particular the Management Report, are highlighted. Types of non-financial reporting are considered, namely: Management report, integrated report, report according to the GRI standard, progress report on the implementation of the principles of the UN Global Compact, report on social and environmental projects, and their characterization according to Directive 2013/34/EU. An analysis of the EU legal framework and its implementation in Ukraine regarding reporting on the sustainable development of companies was carried out. A comparative analysis of the criteria for determining the size category of EU and Ukrainian enterprises was carried out. The prevalence of publication of Reports on the management of Ukrainian companies, which are among the 100 largest taxpayers of Ukraine, was studied, in particular, in the section of the mining and oil refining industry. A comparison was made of the structure and content of the Management Report in accordance with IFRS Practical Report 1, elements of the Management Commentary and Methodological Recommendations No. 982. The recommended information content of the Management Report was grouped taking into account IFRS and Methodological Recommendations No. 982. Recommendations on the introduction of certain corrections to the domestic regulatory framework in order to transition from the standard Ukrainian system to international standards for the preparation of reports on sustainable development are substantiated. Scientific novelty. The novelty of the obtained results lies in the substantiation of scientific and practical provisions regarding the imitation of international standards for the further development of the domestic model of reporting on sustainable development. In addition, it is proposed to spread the practice of drawing up non-financial reports by companies, which will contribute to the formation of an effective management system for identifying existing and forecasting possible internal and external threats to its functioning, as well as taking measures to minimize the impact of these threats on the results of operations on the basis of sustainable development. Practical value. The theoretical and methodological provisions of this study have been brought to practical recommendations for the introduction of certain corrections in the domestic regulatory framework in order to transition from the standard Ukrainian system to international standards for the preparation of reports on sustainable development. The obtained practical results can be used at enterprises of the mining sector and the oil refining industry to implement sustainable development.

Author(s): Natalia Yakimenko-Tereschenko,Alla Anishchenko,Tatiana Chaika,Oleksandr Vyshniakov,Anastasiia Synko / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 4/2022

Purpose. The paper aims to identify and summarize current successful practices of event activities in the restaurant business and gastronomic tourism; to improve approaches to the administration and marketing support of restaurant events. Results. The study showed that in the restaurant business and gastronomic tourism continues the process of specialization and allocation of narrow consumer niches based on the interests and motivations of visitors; customers are increasing demands on the quality and variety of services offered. These circumstances, as well as the high level of competition in the industry, are forcing business owners to look for innovative ways to attract customers. Restaurant event activity is one such way of doing this. The foreign and domestic restaurant business has already accumulated considerable experience in developing and implementing various types of restaurant events. Nowadays, the hospitality industry offers a huge variety of event activities. The large number of unique restaurant events with different focuses makes efforts to typologize them difficult. In terms of planning the event activities of the restaurant, we can distinguish self-sufficient restaurant events, which are not recommended to be combined with other events, and modular restaurant events, which would be more attractive if combined with other event activities. When forming a bank of restaurant activities, compiling basic events packages and developing an Event-menu, you need to consider the concept of a particular restaurant, as well as external and internal environment factors. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the clarification of promising directions for the development of event activity in restaurants. The study of the mechanism for using restaurant events as a means of increasing the appeal and brand awareness of the restaurant was further developed. Based on this analysis, the methodological approach to the formation of a bank of restaurant activities, compiling a basic package of events and the development of the Event-menu of the restaurant was improved. Practical value of the obtained results lies in the possibility of their use in practical activities of the restaurant businesses and travel agencies specializing in culinary tourism.

Features and prospects of the development of social sphere of the village under conditions of decentralization: regional aspects

Author(s): Alla Sokolova,Tatiana Ratoshniuk,Myhaylo Martynyuk,Viktor Ratoshniuk / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose. The purpose of the article is to reveal the peculiarities and substantiate the prospects for the development of the social sphere of the rural areas of the Western Polissia of Ukraine in the conditions of decentralization of management. Results. The peculiarities of the development of the social sphere of the rural areas of the studied region in the conditions of the decentralization reform in the country with the aim of forming effective local self-government and territorial organization of power in order to create and maintain a full-fledged living environment for villagers and provide high-quality and accessible public services are revealed. It was established that the priority tasks of social policy in the countryside in the conditions of decentralization should be: ensuring the solution of the basic problems of reproduction of people’s life activities (food, housing, health); infrastructure development (roads, transport, communications, public services); creation of conditions for development (education, science, culture, sports). Scientific novelty. It has been proven that in the conditions of decentralization transformations, in order to ensure the development of the social sphere, it is important to achieve balanced inter-budgetary relations, to combine the allocation of financial resources from the state budget and funds from local budgets, which will provide all the needs for the development of social infrastructure in the village. This will create ample opportunities to meet people’s needs in modern education, medicine, social, communal, administrative and other services. Practical value. The practical significance of the obtained results lies in the fact that the conclusions and well-founded proposals will ensure the development of such a level of social infrastructure in the village, which would ensure the satisfaction of the needs of local residents in basic household needs, administrative services and become a motivational incentive for the economically active population to live in rural areas.

Islamic exchange-traded funds as a modern mechanism to revitalize the financial markets: case study of the Saudi financial market

Islamic exchange-traded funds as a modern mechanism to revitalize the financial markets: case study of the Saudi financial market

Author(s): Chafia Kettaf,Djaouida Belaa / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose. The present paper aims to clarify the importance of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as one of the creative Islamic financial products that have attracted the attention of investors in recent years. Results. This research concluded that: (i) Islamic ETFs are a useful and convenient option for Sharia-compliant investors who prefer this type of Sharia-compliant investment, whether they are beginners or want to diversify their stock investments without the hassle of research, analysis, and selecting the right companies. The fund itself consists of several stocks selected based on the nature of the indicator that the box simulates. (ii) Islamic ETFs are distinguished by their transparency as they are affiliated with a specific market index and their investments match the components of this index, such as if the fund is linked and affected by the movement of the general index of the market or a sector index, and the fund manager may set an index for his fund in coordination with a specialized body in this field. For example, he places an index of legitimate shares, it makes it simpler for the fund's unit owners to understand how well the fund is performing by comparing it to the performance of the indicators they monitor or model. (iii) From the same perspective, the method of creating an Islamic ETF is not different from its traditional counterpart, and the main difference between them lies in the benchmark index that Islamic ETFs track. (iv) Islamic ETFs invest only in companies that comply with Sharia regulations, and in the event that any stock in the index portfolio is not compatible, it is disposed of even if the expectations of its returns are high, and thus the investment opportunities for the Islamic ETF are in a narrow space compared to the investment opportunities available for traditional ETFs, which may reduce the opportunities for the fund's investment and affect the potential return of the fund. (v) The Islamic ETF industry is weak compared to its traditional counterpart, it has been witnessing a remarkable and important growth in the recent period, especially in the Gulf region, specifically Saudi Arabia, which is one of the regions most qualified to achieve significant growth rates in the Islamic ETF sector. (vi) In general, exchange-traded funds have an important place in the financial markets, especially the Saudi stock market, as investing in these funds would expand the base of the financial markets and give investors greater flexibility in choosing how to allocate their investments across market channels and sectors. Scientific novelty. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to compare approaches to the preparation and presentation of integrated reporting of European and Ukrainian companies – leaders in corporate social responsibility based on the case study and benchmark analysis methods, as well as to develop directions for the harmonization of such approaches. Results. The article systematizes the historical aspects of submitting integrated and climate-oriented reporting in the EU and Ukraine, existing standards and recommendations, and its submission experience based on comparative analysis methods. It has been proven that European legislation in the field of accounting, sustainable development, and disclosure of non-financial information serves as a benchmark for the convergence of the accounting systems of Ukraine and the EU. Based on the case study method, the practice of disclosing information on the sustainable development of global corporations, such as Microsoft and Apple, represented on the European market, was summarized. The experience of leading Ukrainian companies in the field of corporate social responsibility regarding the disclosure of non-financial information and ensuring progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals is summarized. The system of factors restraining the development of integrated reporting and information disclosure processes regarding climate change and sustainable development was considered. It has been established that the lack of precautionary measures regarding these factors can negatively affect the harmonization of the European and Ukrainian accounting systems. Scientific novelty. The novelty of the obtained results lies in the substantiation of European integration trends in the reform of the national accounting system of companies, oriented to the coverage of climate-oriented aspects and the Sustainable Development Goals in an integrated manner. Practical value. The regulators can use the obtained practical results of the benchmark analysis in forming directions for the harmonization of integrated reporting of Ukrainian companies under European approaches, as well as by the companies themselves to improve reporting approaches for climate targets and Sustainable Development Goals.
