Фонетические особенности ненецких заимствований в обско-угорских языках

Фонетические особенности ненецких заимствований в обско-угорских языках

Author(s): Anna Urmanchieva / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 01 (40)/2021

The article deals with the Nenets borrowings in the Ob-Ugric languages: Khanty and Mansi. The main list of these borrowings was compiled by Wolfgang Steinitz in a work published more than half a century ago. In the paper I focus on phonetic features of the borrowed words. These borrowings represent predominantly the cultural vocabulary and are geographically quite limited being presented only in the northern dialects of Mansi and Khanty. Despite of this many of these words retain very archaic features of Nenets phonetics. This allows us to consider linguistic contacts between the Ob-Ugrians and the Nenets as rather old. Consideration of the corpus of the borrowings also allows to shed some light on the relative chronology of historical sound changes in the Nenets language. In the paper all Nenets loans in Mansi and Khanty are compared with their possible sources in Tundra Nenets and in Forest Nenets. This comparison shows that in Forest Nenets a potential corresponding word is often missing or looks phonetically too different and therefore can not be regarded as the source of borrowing. Thus, the donor language was definitely the Tundra Nenets, and not the Forest Nenets language. Mansi and Khanty words borrowed from Tundra Nenets may reflect the following archaic features of Nenets historical phonetics: final vowels (before reduction into °); final consonants, changed into the glottal stop in modern Nenets; intervocalic -m-, changed into - w- in modern Nenets; final glide -w, disappeared in modern Nenets. All words borrowed in Ob-Ugric languages from Nenets can be divided in two groups with respect to these parameters: some of them definitely preserve a more archaic state of Nenets phonetics, whereas others are phonetically much closer to modern Nenets words. Another feature that allows to evaluate the relative age of borrowings is the labialization of vowels in Kazym Khanty and in Mansi: in earlier borrowings Nenets vowel a has changed in Kazym Khanty and Mansi into a labial vowel, whereas in later ones it has preserved its original quality.

Фонетска реконструкција таутовокалских дифтонга као лингвотекстолошки проблем (на грађи Његошевог спјева „Шћепан Мали”)

Author(s): Radmilo N. Marojević / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 22/2020

The author of this paper explains the interpretation of the diphthongs in the epic ”Stephen the Little” by Serbian poet Petar II Petrovich Njegos from the epoch of romanticism. They are: а) tautovocalic diphthongs in the same word, b) tautovocalic diphthongs at the word boundary and its enclitics, c) tautovocalic diphthongs at the word boundary and its proclitics, d) tautovocalic diphthongs at the boundary of two phonetic words, i.e. in sandhi. The analysis comprises the epic ”The Mountain Wreath” and the epic ”The Ray of the Microcosm”, and some of Njegos`s poems, аs well as examples from Serbian folk poems published in the first collection of folk poems ”Маlа prostonarodnya slavenо‑serbska pěsnarica” by Vuk Stefanovich Karadjich.

Формална обележја компаративних фразеологизама у средњевисоконемачком језику

Формална обележја компаративних фразеологизама у средњевисоконемачком језику

Author(s): Branislav D. Ivanović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 23/2021

This paper deals with identifying relevant formal (structural) markers of comparative idioms in Middle High German. From the analysis of examples,it can be concluded that most of these idioms have a bicentric structure. The typical forms of bicentric comparative idioms in Middle High German are infinitival and adjectival phrases, and rarely even nominal and adverbial phrases. Monocentric comparative idioms in Middle High German are always subordinate clauses with subjunctive elements als and sam. In terms of comparative particles, the whole subclass is conservative. Comparative idioms in Middle High German do not show reduplication of the equative particles – the most important distinctive feature in contrast to free comparison. The nominal phrase within the secundum comparationis shows innovations of the Middle High German language: determinators and adjectival attributes are consequently in the left field. A smaller number of comparative idioms in Middle High German have the inversion of the primum and secundum comparationis, and show alliteration and homeoteleutonas well.

The article explores how the grammatical forms of the predicate can be dependent on the level of politeness in modern Bulgarian and Polish. The sentences of two levels of communication – informal and formal – are compared. The author establishes general similarities between the forms of the predicate on the informal level but discovers considerable dissimilarities in formal styles which should be taken into consideration when evaluating the level of politeness in Polish.

ФОРМЕ СТАНДАРДНОГ СРПСКОГ ЈЕЗИКА У СИРИНИЋКОМ ГОВОРУ

Author(s): Anđela Redžić / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 7/2021

This paper is based on an analysis of a transcribed conversation between four people who are speakers of Sirinić speech variety, which belongs to Prizren-Timok dialect area. Although the interlocutors use this local variety in daily communication, they adopted the standardized forms of Serbian language throughout their education. They are also exposed to it on a daily basis through media they consume. Therefore, even though based on a vernacular, their expressions also contain standard language forms. In this paper we examine the usage and the representation of standard language forms of nouns and personal pronouns with the goal to determine the reason of their appearance in this vernacular: we want to answer whether they are deviations caused by a specific context or whether they are potential changes in this speech system. In the transcribed data, grammatical forms which belong to standard Serbian language are identified and their dialectal equivalents are found. The quantification of variants confirmed that vernacular is more represented, and applying qualitative analysis to the usage of standard language forms confirmed that they appear in vernacular forms only in specific situations. Speakers use standard elements in three cases: as a part of stylized statements and in those statements related to a particular topic; within idiomatic expressions, which are perceived as a unit with its unique meaning: this leads to speakers being less likely to notice they are using forms atypical for their usual speech; and within a combination with a logical accent in the sentence, used as a means of emphasizing a particular part of the sentence.

In the Proto-Slavic language, the noun declension was organized upon the noun bases. The declension system, as inherited from the Proto-Indo-European, had 11 changes: seven vowel changes and four consonant changes. Due to various phonetic and morphological changes that affected each of the contemporary Slavic languages thorough the centuries of their separate existence, the noun declension differs in each of them to some degree. Besides, throughout the further development of Slavic languages, after the disintegration of the Proto-Slavic community, such Proto-Slavic organization of the noun declension was replaced by a system of paradigms based on the grammatical gender. Our goal is to see how the declension system in the Ruthenian language was formed as compared with the one in the Ukrainian and the Croatian language. We shall compare the feminine nouns in these two languages and see how former declensions according to various bases got adapted nowadays. We shall pay special attention to dialects of these languages and see whether the differences on the dialectal level are smaller.

ФОРМУВАННЯ КОГНІТИВНОГО ТЕРМІНОЗНАВСТВА НА ТЛІ СУЧАСНИХ ЛІНГВІСТИЧНИХ ДОСЛІДЖЕНЬ

Author(s): Larysa Shutak,Halyna Navchuk / Language(s): Ukrainian / Issue: 3/2017

Formation of cognitive terminology caused not only by external, general reasons related to the approval of anthropocentric paradigm in linguistics, but also by internal laws of terminology defined "endogenous" preconditions related to natural historical development of the science in time. The article reviews the theoretical and practical bases of formation and development of terminology science, outlines the features of structural linguistics, describes the causes of the transition to structural and functional linguistics in the study term. The basic reasons for the formation of cognitive terminology are associated with anthropocentric direction in the development of linguistics. It is proved that continuing the tradition of classical terminology emerged and developed within structural linguistics, which is represented by a set of scientific views on language as a complex multi-level system of signs, cognitive terminology is both qualitatively new, poliparadigmic direction of research terms and terminological principles and methods which are based on cognitive- discursive basis of scientific research (professional) language as a means of cognition and communication of media.

Author(s): Elena Hadjieva,Reni Manova / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 2/2018

Idioms are fixed formulae, which both incorporate and reinforce common attitudes. They are frequently used in colloquial speech. A knowledge of this accumulated folk wisdom, expressed in idioms assumed to be known to all, is a significant component of the linguistic aspect of sociocultural competence. The main aim of this article is to represent the good methodological practices in the process of teaching Bulgarian idioms to foreign students. To ensure that students not only understand the idioms, but also learn to use them, the teacher should present idiom examples in context and use real life, authentic material in order to accelerate the process of acculturation to the new language environment.

Author(s): Ljiljana Makarijoska,Bisera Pavleska-Georgievska / Language(s): Macedonian / Issue: 61/2013

The phraseological units make the everyday communication very „pictorial“, and bring life to the language of newspapers and electronic media. Considering the fact that the communication nowadays is generally performed via internet, the high frequency of the phraseologisms used in this media is expected and logical. The internet is full of written and spoken texts, notifications and reports issued by institutions and official media houses the language of which belongs to the publicistic style, as well as unofficial blogs and forums that generally use the conversational style. The culinary lexis is an interesting field for linguistic and cultural researches, and large number of phraseological units uses components taken from this field in order to express various aspects, considering the fact that food is a crucial surviving element and it represents a signifier of an ethnic, national, class or gender identity. This paper discusses the phraseological units that contain culinary elements as integral components (products, types of food and other items related with the food preparation). Their usage is being illustrated with interesting examples excerpted from various texts found on internet. These examples offer a possibility to record the meaning of the phraseologisms and its changes, structure variations intended to intensify the power of expression and its attractiveness, as well as to register occurrences of some new phraseological combinations.

The Russian testing system of Russian as a foreign language (RFL) is successfully operating for two decades. However, the levels of Russian language proficiency are still not described with sufficient completeness and validity. In the article the problem of reflection in the regulations of lexical competence, which is a system consisting of several components, is considered. One of the most important components are the idioms and set expressions. To form a tiered phraseological minimum is the most important task of the RFL specialists. This work proposes solutions to some theoretical and practical problems in the determining the scope and content of the phraseological lows.

Фразеологические единицы библейского происхождения в речи православных носителей русского языка

Author(s): Eugenia Maksimowicz / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 14/2014

Currently in Russia, due to the change in the political system, there is more and more noticeable impact of the Orthodox Church on the life and language of the Russians. Biblical phraseology begins to permanently enter into the realm of contemporary Russian culture. It became common among the Orthodox Russians to cite the idiomatic expressions and quotations from the Bible. In the modern language of the Orthodox Christians the meanings of idiomatic units coincide with their meanings in the texts of Scripture, which, however, is not always synonymous with the dictionary meaning.

Author(s): Teodora Ilieva / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 3/2021

The concept of ‘cross’ is polysemantic. It is one of the three fundamental world emblems, a sacred Christian symbol in the religious, cultural-historical and linguistic continuum of the Slavic peoples. Therefore, it motivates the emergence of many various stable word combinations. The article discusses mostly real (full) phrasemеs and partly nonreal (non-full) phraseological units with component ‘cross’ (which forms 17 microsemantic cores with the first lexeme ‘a symbol of Christianity; a written mark, formed by two lines going across each other’ and 7 microsemantic cores with the Bulgarian homonym ‘krаst’ meaning lower back ‘the lower part of the back’), excerpted from Bulgarian and Russian phraseological dictionaries and media texts. A comparison is made between the phrases in both languages, highlighting the common Slavic uses and differences, the specific expressions (direct, metaphorical and metonymic use of ‘cross’), which are the linguistic picture of each ethnic phenotype. Phraseologisms are analyzed and categorized on several grounds: degree of desemantization of the constituent components – phraseological combinations, phraseological units, phraseological adhesions (fusions); grammatical structure (mono-element: only S; bi-element: only V + S, A + S, A + Adv; three element: V+ A+ S, V + S + Pron, S + pr + S, S+ Adv + S , S + pr + Pron; poly-element: V+ S+ pr+ Pron, V+ Pron+ pr+ S, pr+ Pron+ V+ S, etc.).

Idiom study presents a special language problem for all language learners because the figurative meaning is unpredictable. The Ukrainian language being very flexible constantly enriches its vocabulary with words invented by language speakers, making it more colorful with new Phraseological units expressions, and, at times, refills its stocks with the borrowings and neologisms. Ukrainian just amazes by its extraordinary linguistic diversity. The subject determined the choice of research methodologies: theoretical (analysis of scientific and methodological literature, textbooks, programs for foreign students, study and synthesis of long-term pedagogical experience, modeling of the learning process); empirical (purposeful observation of the educational process, analysis of oral and written sentences of foreign students). Scientific novelty. For the first time there have been presented the importance of phraseological units, or idioms, represent what can be described as the most picturesque and expressive part of the language's vocabulary and to the problem of using phraseological units in speaking of upper-intermediate students. Examples of suitable exercises are presented in the article. It is share cultural and historical information and broaden people’s understanding and manipulation of a language. Idioms are always something special about any language; they build up some distinctive features which differ one language from another. What is more, phraseological units reflect certain cultural traditions and depict the national character. They are not a separate part of the language which one can choose either to use or to omit, but they form an essential part of the general vocabulary of Ukrainian. In order to understand a language, we must know what the idioms in that language mean. If we try to figure out the meaning of an idiom literally, word by word, we will get befuddled. We have to know its hidden meaning. Because of phraseological units, learning a language can be complicated. Conclusions. It has been proved that the sheer number of idioms and their high frequency in discourse make them an important aspect of vocabulary acquisition and language learning in general. One of the approaches to defining this linguistic phenomenon stresses that an idiom is a manner of speaking that is natural to native speakers of the language. It proves that only students who are very good at speaking Ukrainian can adequately and to the point use idiomatic expressions in their speech. Ukrainian is a language with a vast idiomatic basis, which makes its learning very exciting and intriguing. So grasping the use of idioms is an essential part of learning Ukrainian.

Французские заимствования в русской фразеологии xviii века

Французские заимствования в русской фразеологии xviii века

Author(s): Alexander Bierich / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 124/2008

The present article is devoted to different types of French phraseological borrowings in the Russian language of the 18th century. Lexical borrowings mostly preserve their material content in the borrowing language, whereas phraseological units as a rule become loantranslations. Due to this fact it is complicated to prove whether the given phraseological unit is a borrowing or not. The present article suggests a methodology for differentiation of phraseological loan-translations from the parallel idiomatic units that appeared directly in the borrowing language. On the basis of the suggested methodology the author determines the structure of French borrowings in the Russian phraseology of the 18th century.

ФРЕКВЕНТНОСТ УПОТРЕБЕ ЕНГЛЕСКИХ НЕПРАВИЛНИХ ГЛАГОЛА КАО ФАКТОР РЕГУЛАРИЗАЦИЈЕ

Author(s): Jelena M. Josijević / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 56/2015

This paper aims at testing the traditional hypothesis stating that the higher frequency the word possesses the more is it resistent to alternations. The paper focuses on English irregular verbs. The analysis is conducted on 32 irregular verbs used in both regular and irregular forms of preterite and past participle. Based on the data presented in previous papers, dedicated to English transitioning verbs, the values for probability of each form are obtained. The probability of the occurence (of regular forms) is taken as Y variable and absolute frequency as X variable. Then, the equations for linear regression and the correlation coefficients for these two variables are calculated with Graph Pad Prism 6 statistical software. The results obtained through this analysis do not confirm the traditional hypothesis but they do support the alternative theories which advocate that analogical changes in inflectional system are sporadic in its nature when there are no strong extramorphological forces (e.g. new language contact situations, relevant changes in phonetic system, etc.). In other words, the directions and the outcomes of these analogical changes cannot be predicted.

ФУНКЦИИ ЛОГИЧЕСКИХ ЧАСТИЦ В КРЕОЛИЗОВАННОМ ТЕКСТЕ (НА МАТЕРИАЛЕ СОВРЕМЕННОЙ КАРИКАТУРЫ)

Author(s): Maria Vladimirovna Opolovnikova,Inna Vladimirovna Kokurina / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 5/2021

The article deals with the specifics of the functioning of focus particles in creolized texts. The increasing role of visual information has led to the emergence of a large number of polycode texts, which are addressed by many interdisciplinary studies. The researchers mainly focus on lexical, rhetorical, and stylistic means, while functional parts of speech, in particular particles, are not studied enough, which determines the relevance of this article. As a hypothesis, it was assumed that the specificity of a caricature as a polycode text entails the specifics of the studied words functioning. As a result of the study, it was found that the specific functional features of focus particles are determined by critical goals pursued by caricatures, on the one hand, and by the presence of a visual component, on the other hand. It is noted that the polycode character of the caricature text affects the type and representation of ideas related by particles. Moreover, these ideas can be presented explicitly (verbally and/or visually) or implicitly. A new – synthesizing – function of focus particles is described, when the particles ensure connection between verbal and visual elements in a semiotically complicated text. In this case, the visual component can complement, clarify or contradict the verbal one, revealing additional meanings. It is established that particles are able to bring meaning and relevance to the information conveyed by iconic means, contributing to the achievement of a certain pragmatic effect, determined by the purpose of caricatures to give critical assessment of various factors of current socio-political life.
