Wybrane problemy generowania grup apozycyjnych w dawnej polszczyźnie

Wybrane problemy generowania grup apozycyjnych w dawnej polszczyźnie

Author(s): Piotr Zbróg / Language(s): Polish Issue: 37(42)/2020

The subject of interest in this chapter is the concepts of creating apposition groups that appear in the literature on the subject, e.g. zbawiciel Jesus, dziewica Maryja, matka jego, słudze Bryjidzie. Opposing theories on this topic indicated on the one hand that apposition was an element added to the parent unit, and on the other hand, that apposition was the effect of transforming the deep structure into surface constructs. These approaches were, usually intuitive, reflected by language courts describing the title expressions since the beginning of the 19th century. In this study, they were traced and proved the dominance of opinions about the syntactic starting point in the derivative of apposition. In addition, other aspects of the characteristics of the groups of positions are discussed, placing them in the basic dichotomy of the derivation of positions.

Dyskurs medyczny a przekład naukowych tekstów medycznych

Dyskurs medyczny a przekład naukowych tekstów medycznych

Author(s): Anna Bączkowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2019

The paper discusses lexico-syntactic and discourse features of medical texts published in scientific medical journals with high Impact Factor and, based on these, it presents some implications for translators of medical texts. The features of medical discourse are analysed with the aid of Coh-Metrix, which is a computer program used for language analysis, and Raygor Estimate, which is a readability test. The theoretical framework applied to the study involves the descriptive translation studies (Touri, 1995) and the skopos theory (Vermeer, 1982). The analysis shows that a translator of medical texts should: (1) resort to lexis and syntactic structures of low variety, and (2) adjust the translated text to the readability level and editorial requirements of a specific journal.

Zur Synonymie bei personenbezeichnenden Einwortidiomen – Eine Analyse am Beispiel von Angsthase und seinen Synonymen

Author(s): Marcelina Kałasznik / Language(s): German Issue: 73/2020

The subject of this article are selected German one-word idioms that describe the human trait of anxiety. At the center of the investigation is the question of the synonymy of the phraseologisms to be analyzed. The aim of the study is to show to what extent the analyzed phraseological units can be regarded as synonymous and consequently as interchangeable. The analysis is carried out on the basis of the data taken from the DeReKo. The background to the research on this question is provided by considerations over the definition of single-word idioms, which aim to show that, despite their monolexicality, German single-word idioms should be included in the subject area of phraseology. For this, various arguments are presented and discussed in the theoretical part of the article. The appearance of the synonyms in the lexicon is then explained in more detail, and the manner in which the synonymy is manifested in the phraseolexicon is also discussed. It is pointed out that phraseological units can be synonymous both with one another and with other units of the lexicon. However, it should be noted that only the first perspective of the synonymy of phraseological units is examined in the article.

Kollokationen in Leserbriefen der Wochenzeitschrift Die Zeit

Kollokationen in Leserbriefen der Wochenzeitschrift Die Zeit

Author(s): Mariann Skog-Södersved,Anita Malmqvist / Language(s): German Issue: 73/2020

In the field of phraseology collocations have been less extensively researched than idioms. Because of their lower degree of idiomaticity collocations do not normally cause receptive problems in foreign language learning but need to be paid attention to when producing texts. We therefore argue that collocations are an important part of phraseology. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the syntactic structure, use and functions of collocations in 243 Letters to the Editor published in the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit. After consulting two dictionaries of collocations and some more universal sources a total of 278 collocations were identified and their respective bases and collocates were determined. The results show that nouns make up the majority of the bases (97%), while adjectives and verbs prevail among the collocates (96%). This is contradictory to the distribution of parts of speech in one of the two most comprehensive German dictionaries of collocations. A closer analysis of the empirical material reveals that the bases seem to reflect the subjects discussed in the letters, whereas the collocates provide the means for expressing the authors’ attitudes and values.

Second language speaking performance: The role of L2 working memory capacity

Second language speaking performance: The role of L2 working memory capacity

Author(s): Ayşegül Nergis / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2020

The present study aimed to investigate to what extent advanced L2 learners with low and high working memory (WM) capacity differ with respect to their L2 speaking. 52 English for Academic Purposes (EAP) students enrolled in a freshmen course with a focus on academic speaking skills participated in this study. In order to assess participants’ working memory (WM) capacity, Daneman’s (1991) speaking span test was used. Speech samples collected through an oral argumentation task were analyzed in terms of acoustic measures of oral fluency, accuracy, and lexical and structural complexity. Multivariate tests showed that L2 WM capacity can explain variances in lexical complexity; but, WM was not significantly associated with any of the oral fluency, accuracy or syntactic complexity measures. Theoretical implications of the findings were discussed.

Adjectifs qualificatifs et saturation par l’ethos

Adjectifs qualificatifs et saturation par l’ethos

Author(s): Dominique Maingueneau / Language(s): French Issue: 74/2021

Since the end of the 1990s, research on discursive ethos – the image of the speaker which is projected by his or her utterance – has been very active in discourse analysis. It contributes to a better understanding of how an enunciation can attract the support of addressees. But in general, this research 1) focuses on isolated texts or individual speakers, not on discursive formations, 2) does not take into account the lexicon when it does not have clear ideological content. On the contrary, this article deals with the role played by some French polysemous adjectives (simple, doux, clair) to make the incorporation (Maingueneau 1999) of readers or listeners possible, to make them adhere to the universe of meaning that is proposed to them. This point of view is first illustrated by the study of an advertising text, before being applied to large discursive formations: a religious movement (“devout humanism”) of the first half of the 17th century; and, in the political field, two antagonistic positions in France under the French Third Republic (1870–1940): the handbooks of Republican School and the monarchist movement “l’Action Française”. We are led to conclude that adjectives, by their polysemy, “saturate discourse.” Through ethos, discourse does not only persuade by the ideas it delivers: it also sets the addressee in a speech scene that partakes of the semantic characteristics of the ideological universe that discourse aims to promote.

La multifonctionnalité des constructions françaises avec le verbe finir : étude basée sur un corpus français-lituanien

La multifonctionnalité des constructions françaises avec le verbe finir : étude basée sur un corpus français-lituanien

Author(s): Vita Valiukienė,Lina Dubikaltytė-Raugalienė / Language(s): French Issue: 74/2021

Based on the Corpus parallèle de Textes Littéraires (CTLFR-LT), consisting of French fiction texts and their translations into Lithuanian, the present article aims to show the functional versatility of the French verb finir ‘to finish’. The paper focuses on the following particular constructions: S((in)anim) + finir + (GN); S((in)anim) + (en) finir de + V(inf); S ((in)anim) + finir par + V(inf); pour finir. While retaining its literal meaning, the verb finir ‘to finish’ exhibits a great range of modally marked uses. These uses, considered peripheral in the majority of French monolingual and bilingual grammars or dictionaries, nevertheless appear to be statistically very significant in the present dataset. The study shows that the verb finir ‘to finish’ can be used as a component of various constructions in which it loses its core lexical meaning and functions as an adverbial or discourse connector. The analysis of the data of the corpus Corpus parallèle de Textes Littéraires merely confirms the fact that the constructions under consideration can have a two-fold reading: the adverbial function of time and the function of a sentence adverbial.

The afterlife of the antipassive: Alignment shift and transitivity

The afterlife of the antipassive: Alignment shift and transitivity

Author(s): Bernard Comrie / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

Three examples are presented of reanalyses of antipassives as or in the direction of ordinary transitive constructions, from Tsez, Chukchi, and Mayan languages. In all cases, an antipassive construction remains in the language or language family concerned, thus presenting empirical evidence of reanalysis to parallel earlier hypothesized reconstructions of antipassives to explain synchronic idiosyncrasies

The Functional-Cognitive Characteristics of Interrogative Utterances in Modern Ukrainian

The Functional-Cognitive Characteristics of Interrogative Utterances in Modern Ukrainian

Author(s): Maryna Navalna,Natalia Kostusiak,OLEKSANDR MEZHOV / Language(s): English Issue: 21/2021

The article presents a comprehensive multifaceted description of interrogative sentences in terms of the interaction of their semantic-syntactic (syntaxeme) and formal-grammatical articulation with their communicative articulation (relevant). The syntaxeme structure of interrogative sentences is determined according to the communicative intentions of the speaker. In particular, the following substantial syntaxemes, which serve as a means of modelling questions, are outlined: 1) the indefinite-interrogative subject of an action (physical, locative, intellectual, verbal); 2) the indefinite-interrogative subject of a state (physical, psycho-emotional, intellectual, locative, emotional-evaluative attitude, possessive); 3) the indefinite-interrogative subject of qualification feature, identification; 4) the indefinite-interrogative subject of a qualitative feature; 5) the indefinite-interrogative subject of a process; 6) the indefinite-interrogative object of an action (physical, intellectual-mental, verbal, perceptual); 7) the indefinite-interrogative object of a state (desire, intellectual); 8) the indefinite-interrogative object of a process (physical, psycho-emotional); 9) the indefinite-interrogative object of a qualitative feature; 10) the indefiniteinterrogative addressee of an action or state; 11) the indefinite-interrogative means or instrument of an action; 12) the indefinite-interrogative locative.

КОРПУСНЫЕ ИССЛЕДОВАНИЯ В СИНТАКСИСЕ: ВОЗМОЖНОСТИ И ОГРАНИЧЕНИЯ

КОРПУСНЫЕ ИССЛЕДОВАНИЯ В СИНТАКСИСЕ: ВОЗМОЖНОСТИ И ОГРАНИЧЕНИЯ

Author(s): Aleksander Kiklewicz / Language(s): Russian Issue: 177/2022

The aim of the article is to show the possibilities of using internet corpora in syntactic research. Corpus analysis allows for the verification of axiomatically modeled compositions of units, however the command may be material (exact search) or algorithmic (lexical-grammatical search). Corpus tools are primarily useful in determining the frequency of units and their combinations in texts, and the regularity of predetermined features. Based on the frequency, the typological features of different languages can be described in terms of selected parameters. Corpus analysis also makes it possible to check whether a given lexeme valence property is certified or not, and to determine its functionality. The author also shows that the use of the internet corpus in syntactic research has certain limitations. In the case of frequent phenomena, especially in colloquial speech, corpus analysis is effective, but it does not always allow to document phenomena that are less typical and stylistically marked. It is all the more dangerous in the case of less frequent, but regular units in terms of the implementation of systemic oppositions. The corpus should be equally capable of describing the phenomena of speech and the language system, concludes the author. One conclusion is that corpus analysis should be set up with introspection and polling.

Povestea – Instrument de stimulare cognitivă pentru copiii cu intelect de limită integrați în școala de masă

Author(s): Aura-Liliana Brînzilă / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2021

The study focused on students with liminal intellect integrated in the mainstream school and was based on adapting the teaching-learning-recovery methods to the students` developmental particularities. It started from the premise that students' cognitive hehabilitation process would be improved through cognitive stimulation programs based on the storytelling method. The storytelling as a therapeutic method accompanied a set of exercises for cognitive stimulation influenced children` s cognitive performsnces. Participants in the research were 32 students from the second grade based on the results they obtained on "Progressive Reaven Matrices" test (QI values in the range 68-85). Perticipants were organized in two groups: 16 in the experimental group and 16 in the control group. Test-retest method with a single dependent variable was used. Qualitative results of this research are: the metaphors used in the stories taught the students to overcome the emotional barriers, they learned that they can ask several times about something they did not understand, without being criticized or stigmatized for their lack of knowledge; the symbols used in the construction of the stories led to the development of an efficient communication between the parents and the students included in the experimental group; the cognitive stimulation program facilitated the structuring and restructuring of learning leading to the improvement of learning difficulties.

Erori în analiza sintactică a frazei

Erori în analiza sintactică a frazei

Author(s): Maria-Laura Rus / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 18/2015

Syntactic segmentation of a phrase in Romanian is not a difficult operation if the user has some basic grammatical knowledge. But there can be some ambiguity in this segmentation if one does not see all the syntactic aspects that are implied, such as the connectors, the regent and its nature. One of the consequences of an incorrect delimitation is the incorrect interpretation of the subordinate sentence.

Kazimiero Jauniaus Lietùviškas Kalbomõkslis. Baltiko padangese (1897) – Jono Jablonskio Lietuviškos kalbos gramatikos (1901) šaltinis.

Author(s): Jurgita Venckienė / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 23/2021

The main source of Jonas Jablonskis’ Lietuviškos kalbos gramatika (Grammar of the Lithuanian language, Tilsit, 1901 [JaG]), signed under the pseudonym of Petras Kriaušaitis, is Petras Avižonis’ Liėtùviška Gramatikė̃lė (Small Lithuanian Grammar, [Petersburg, 1898] [AvG]). However, Jablonskis significantly supplemented AvG by adding the chapters on preposition, conjunction, interjection, syntax and orthography. He also separated the descriptions of noun and adjective, added chapters on phonetics, pronoun, numeral, verb, used Lithuanian language terms. Jablonskis did not indicate other sources in JaG, fragments of the text taken from other works are not identified as such. However, later Jablonskis wrote that he also used Kazimieras Jaunius’ Lietùviškas kalbomõkslis. Baltiko padangese (Lithuanian Grammar. In the Baltic Skies, [Dorpat,] 1897 [JaunK]). The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between these two grammars. Some of the material for JaG was undoubtedly taken over directly from JaunK, for it was not present in AvG or other grammars that Jablonskis could have used. However, Avižonis also used JaunK, so some fragments entered JaG through AvG, rather than directly from JaunK. Since Jablonskis took over AvG almost in its entirety, there is no doubt such fragments of JaunK had previously been incorporated in AvG only to later appear in JaG. All the more so as JaunK’s statements and examples are equally reformulated, supplemented or abbreviated in AvG and JaG. The article analyses only the material that was taken over to JaG directly from JaunK and that was not present in AvG. It is much more difficult to identify the source of the fragments which are found in both JaunK and Friedrich Kurschat’ Grammatik der Littauischen Sprache (Grammar of the Lithuanian language, Halle, 1876 [KG]). It is not always clear whether Jablonskis took it directly from KG or through JaunK. In such cases, the immediate context is considered. When not only the idea of KG but also more material, adjacent sentences, are taken over from the same section of JaunK, the path of the fragment is considered to be KG → JaunK → JaG. The connection between JaunK and JaG is also evidenced by the uniform wording of sentences. In his grammar, Jablonskis stated that he supported character [č], proposed by Jaunius, as well as orthography of nom. pl. of i, u stems with endings įs, -ųs. JaunK could also have influenced the spelling of the numerals trįs ‘three’, keturiasdešimtas–devyniasdešimtas ‘fortieth-ninetieth’. Jablonskis used Jaunius’ terms būdvardis ‘adjective’, veiksmažodis ‘verb’, prieveiksmis ‘adverb’, jausmažodis ‘interjection’; linksnis ‘case’, linksniavimas ‘declination’, dvilypuotieji būdvardžiai ‘pronominal adjectives’, tikrieji ‘quantitative’ and paeiliniai ‘ordinal’ (numerals), sakomasis būdas ‘mood’, savyveiksmis ‘reflexive verb, form’, nestati, nestačioji kalba ‘indirect speech’. Fragments of JaunK about the concept and types of sounds have been taken over to the JaG. JaG material on consonant assimilation also has connection with JaunK. Jablonskis also used JaunK while preparing the chapter of morphology. There are connections in the definition of adjective, the description of category of number of nouns, pronominal adjectives and gradation of adjectives. There are also identical statements about the declension of numerals and their semantic groups in JaunK and JaG. According to JaunK, the definition of the pronoun was formulated in JaG. Jablonskis also used JaunK to describe verbs, adverbs, and interjection. In the chapter of the syntax, the influence of JaunK can be seen in the description of the use of participants. Jablonskis used the linguistic material, examples of JaunK. Jablonskis used the data of dialects, mostly Samogitians, provided by JaunK. Comments on the grades of adjectives, variants of pronouns, forms of future tense, use of adverbs, as well as lexical variants are related to JaunK. In summary, the direct influence of JaunK can be registered in slightly less than a quarter (48 out of 224) of JaG’s paragraphs.

Глаголы физического контакта: модели управления и семантические сдвиги

Author(s): Valentina Apresjan,Alexei Shmelev / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2020

The paper is a corpus study of semantic shifts that arise with different morphosyntactic expressions of semantic arguments (possessor and part) in Russian verbs of physical contact, such as celovat’ ‘to kiss’, obnimat’ ‘to hug’, gladit’ ‘to stroke’, etc. Different syntactic patterns are possible: expression of the possessor by an accusative with optional part expression (‘kissing her (on the lips)’), ‘stroking a child (on the head)’); construction with a possessive pronoun or genitive (‘kissing her hands’, ‘kissing the hands of the wife’), as well as benefactive construction with dative (‘kissing she.DAT hands’, ‘stroking she.DAT back’). We demonstrate what semantic shifts are associated with different patterns and constructions, and how the preferred morphosyntactic expression correlates with semantics and pragmatics of different verbs.

Operatory limitacji o postaci superlatywu przysłówka w języku polskim

Operatory limitacji o postaci superlatywu przysłówka w języku polskim

Author(s): Maciej Grochowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2020

It is possible to distinguish in Polish a special class of lexical units that have the shape of adverb superlatives, yet belong to the class of metapredicative operators. The paper discusses a subclass of them, namely limitators. A limitator opens one syntactic position, primarily on its right side, for an expression implying the notion of quantity, number or measure; grammatical forms of the expressions filling this position are varied. Contrary to that, a superlative of adverbs opens up two positions, the first for a verb and the other for a prepositional phrase. The paper contains a detailed analysis of five homonymic units belonging both to the class of adverbs and to the class of limitators.

Frekwencja czasownika a jego właściwości walencyjne: opis składni eksplikacyjnej w świetle „prawa Mańczaka”

Author(s): Aleksander Kiklewicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2020

The article concerns a functional perspective of the explicative syntax, i.e. the relationship between the specification of the verb’s valence class and its frequency in various types of texts. Based on the analysis of source material (in Polish and Russian) as well as on a synchronous interpretation of “Mańczak’s law” (i.e. explanation of the irregular development of word forms by their text frequency), the author argues that verbs with higher frequency display a greater degree of diversity in their syntactic distribution.

The aim of the analysis is to present a valence characteristics of the noun diagnoza (diagnosis). I start with reviewing several dictionary definitions, in order to find out how many meanings of diagnoza should be recognized. In what follows, I describe the deep structure of diagnoza, based on the analysis of the examples from the selected dictionaries and The Polish Valency Dictionary (Walenty). The next step is to characterize morphological and semantic criteria for the positions opened by this noun. And finally, I discuss some problems with interpreting surface realizations of this noun. The analysis is based on the evidence from The National Corpus of Polish.

O rezultativnoj konstrukciji s predikatnim instrumentalom u hrvatskome jeziku

Author(s): Davor Krsnik / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 92/2021

The paper describes the construction in which resultative secondary predicates are marked with instrumental case. Three hypotheses are being evaluated. The first hypothesis states that the resultative instrumental case is a semantic category of the predicate instrumental that is syntactically divided into complement and adjunct types. It is shown that complex predicates derived from lexical causatives and their resultative predicate complements function as triggers of analogical mapping of the resultative construction on lexically full verbs, thereby creating examples of adjunct resultatives marked by the predicate instrumental. The second hypothesis explains that resultative secondary predication in Croatian is aspectually neutral. This hypothesis confronts the viewpoint that grammaticalized aspect suppresses resultativity on a syntactical level. The third hypothesis explains that at least two features derive from the aspectual neutrality of resultatives in Croatian that make this variant of resultative construction typologically distinctive – prominent gradeability of adjectives that take on the resultative function and the incrementality of the change of state process undergone by the patient. These three hypotheses are tested by collostructional analysis and by a model of integration of verbs with constructions proposed by Goldberg (1995).
