ЗА МНОГОТО ИНФИНИТИВИ В НЕМСКИЯ ЕЗИК

ЗА МНОГОТО ИНФИНИТИВИ В НЕМСКИЯ ЕЗИК

Author(s): Antoaneta Mihaylova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The existence of more than one infinitival form in Modern German, and the lack of an infinitive in Modern Bulgarian causes difficulties in the acquisition of the German language by Bulgarian learners. The article deals with the development of the infinitival forms, their use in the building of the analytical tense structures, the difference between bare and prepositional infinitives and compares the infinitival structures with the dependent clausal constructions. It also renders some of the possible ways of translating the infinitival German forms into Bulgarian.

A CORPUS-BASED ANALYSIS ON EXCLAMATIVES IN THE PHILIPPINEvENGLISH (ICE-PHI)

A CORPUS-BASED ANALYSIS ON EXCLAMATIVES IN THE PHILIPPINEvENGLISH (ICE-PHI)

Author(s): Myla l. Santos,Amirul Mukminin / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Exclamatives constructions in the Philippine English form a variegated class which is often confused with other types of clauses. These structures are characterized by intonation contour, emphatic stress and propositional properties beyond their syntactic form. Using the AntCoc protocol, this corpus-based study presents a survey of the categories and syntactical characteristics as well as the functions of the exclamatives found in ICE-PHI with 199 hits out of 1,172 tokens from the word collection. Key words such as what, how so, such a/an and others were used to locate the target hits of the utterances. Analysis was made on the syntactic and formulaic forms, semantic categories and pragmatic impressions. Results show that 'so' exclamatives posted the highest frequency, followed by the prototypes, and 'the such a/an' exclamatives. Minimal occurrences were recorded for DP – 'the way' exclamatives and nominal exclamatives. A majority of the exclamatives followed the initial exclamative phrase syntactic formula except for the 'such a/an' exclamatives which follow the subject auxiliary inversion. The syntactic features and functions of the exclamatives illustrated the semantic nature of the structures which differentiated them from seeming to be similar structures as in expressive/emotional utterance.

TEMPORAL STRUCTURE OF RAP NARRATIVES VS. FAIRY TALES (SYNTACTICAL AND NARRATIVE FACETS)

TEMPORAL STRUCTURE OF RAP NARRATIVES VS. FAIRY TALES (SYNTACTICAL AND NARRATIVE FACETS)

Author(s): Nataliia Kravchenko,Oksana Soshko,Yuliia Kononets / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The paper focuses on the linguistic and narrative manifestations of linear time in rap lyrics compared to fairy tales. It aims at scrutinizing narrative time by the criteria of its acceleration, retardation and generalization, based on syntactical, narrative and pragmatic devices, interpreted from the viewpoint of their iconic isomorphism to the expressed temporal relations. Linear time in fairy tales is self-sufficient, forward-oriented and isolated from external time, while rap narratives are consistent with historical time and free in its movement from the past to the present, and vice versa. Time acceleration in rap occurs in the past or dramatic present and involves syntactical devices aimed either at reducing syntactic patterns by means of detached constructions, asyndeton, nominative sentences and ellipsis, which iconically reproduce the events’ change rate, or at increasing emotional power through climax, reproducing time “condensation.” Instead, fairy tale time is accelerated by lexical-semantic means. The slowed time in rap lyrics relies either on the redundancy of the syntactical pattern, provided by anaphora, repetitions, polysyndeton and enumerations, iconically reproducing the time extension, or on meaning implicatures and their corresponding violation of pragmatic maxims, foregrounded by enjambment , catachresis, aposiopesis and parenthetical phrases, semantically incoherent with the clause they must qualify. Instead, the time extension in a tale never relies on the inference of the deliberately implicated meanings and is expressed by formula and plot elements repetitions. In contrast to subsequent and monotemporal tale narratives, rap lyrics time is often marked by the violation of the temporal sequence, indicating psychological time, inherent in poetry in general.

Парентеза як засіб експресивного синтаксису в історичному романі Павла Загребельного "Диво"

Author(s): Olena Turchak / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 12/2024

The article analyzes the parenthetical (inserted) constructions in the historical novel "The Miracle" by Pavlo Zahrebelny. It has been established that parenthetical elements have a different syntactic structure. They are represented by words, phrases and various types of sentences, including textual formations. There is a small number of one- and two-component parentheticals. Most of them are multicomponent insertions. The grammatical compatibility of the parenthetical constructions with the main clause is taken under consideration. It has been established that parentheticals are joined to the main clause by both conjunctive and non-conjunctive relations. Attention is paid to the punctuation marks of the inserted components and their place in the sentence. The functional diversity of parentheses is determined. It has been found that they are used to clarify, explain, express desire, satisfaction, dissatisfaction, assumption, objection, doubt, etc. Particular attention is paid to parenthetical constructions as a means of expressive syntax and a marker of sentence modality. The expressiveness of parenthetical constructions is manifested through their versatility, redundancy, spontaneity and violation of the linear plan of presentation.

A pragmatic approach to the rhetorical analysis and the metadiscourse markers of research article abstracts in the field of applied linguistics

A pragmatic approach to the rhetorical analysis and the metadiscourse markers of research article abstracts in the field of applied linguistics

Author(s): Eatidal Hasan,Ergaya Alsout / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

Using Hyland’s (2000) model as a research tool and drawing on Hyland’s (2005a) model of metadiscourse, this article presents a pragmatic two-level rhetorical analysis of the constituent moves within research article abstracts. It specifically zeroes in on the identification and mapping of the most frequently used metadiscourse markers signifying these moves. The findings highlight that Libyan authors employ interactive markers more often than interactional ones. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis of metadiscourse indicate that transitions, endophoric markers, and frame markers emerge as the dominant interactive categories. In contrast, interactional metadiscourse is predominantly represented by attitude markers, hedges, and boosters. Based on the findings, Move 1 features the highest frequency of metadiscourse markers, followed by Move 2. Notably, transitions stand out as the most prevalent category across all moves. This study carries pedagogical implications for academic writing practices among Libyan academic writers and students alike. Moreover, it enhances the existing body of research on the genre of research articles.

On the use of rhetorical questions in tweets related to the Russia-Ukrainian war: Podolyak vs Polyanskiy

Author(s): Džemal Špago / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The paper explores the use of rhetorical questions in Twitter posts of Mykhailo Podolyak (a Ukrainian presidential adviser) and Dmitry Polyanskiy (a Russian official), in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The goals of the paper are, among others, to find out what kinds of rhetorical questions are used, what their main communicative functions are, and what differences or similarities can be observed in the use of these questions on Twitter by the two officials. The obtained results indicate that notable, statistically significant differences in the use of rhetorical questions by the two individuals do exist, regarding the form of such questions, who they are addressed at, as well as in terms of the primary functions that they perform in the analysed tweets.

Rhetorical structural patterns of postgraduate theses abstracts of related disciplines: a genre study

Rhetorical structural patterns of postgraduate theses abstracts of related disciplines: a genre study

Author(s): Kingsley Cyril Mintah / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The study of research abstracts has gained significant scholarly attention as part of genre studies due to the communicative importance of abstracts in constructing academic knowledge. This study contributes to the discussion by examining the structural organization and lexico-grammatical features of ninety (90) postgraduate theses abstracts in the disciplines of English Language studies, Literature studies, and Linguistics studies (Ghanaian Languages). The abstracts were purposively sampled from the graduate theses of departments of the School of Languages, the University of Ghana. The data was analyzed using Hyland’s (2000) genre model of research abstracts. The findings reveal that abstracts of English Language studies and Linguistics studies (Ghanaian Languages) are often informative while Literature studies abstracts are more indicative and possess distinct structuring of the moves. The Purpose move (M2) remains obligatory and the Conclusion move (M5) is optional across the disciplines. Also, some lexico-grammatical features in the linguistic choices of scholars in the three disciplines point to evidential differences that mark informative abstracts as varying from indicative abstracts. The study concludes that identifying the discipline-specific function of the abstracts may be the best means to account for variations in abstracts of varying disciplines and calls for the deliberate enculturation of academics into discipline-oriented research writing skills to improve the presentation of research ideas in abstracts.

Stance markers in forestry research articles: indicators of authoritative voice

Stance markers in forestry research articles: indicators of authoritative voice

Author(s): Zahra Nasirizadeh,Shamala Paramasivam / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Stance markers, serving as the primary discursive category of interactional metadiscourse, function as a reliable measure for evaluating how authors of research articles authoritatively foreground their research within disciplinary communities. Stance research primarily focuses on how authors or speakers adjust the certainty level of their assertions, both epistemically and emotionally. This study examined the occurrences of stance markers in each rhetorical move within the Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion sections of forestry research articles. The corpus comprised 40 research articles randomly selected from five ISI journals in the forestry discipline. This study utilized Hyland’s (2005) model of academic interactions and Kanoksilapatham’s (2005) framework as analytical tools for identifying stance markers and the rhetorical structure of forestry research articles. The findings revealed differences in the distribution of these markers across the different sections and constituent rhetorical moves within the research articles. Overall, hedges and self-mentions emerged as the most prevalent stance markers in this study. Across sections, attitude markers and hedges predominated in the Introductions, while self-mentions and hedges were pervasively applied in the Methods sections. Boosters and attitude markers were common in the Results, and boosters along with self-mentions were notable in the Discussions. Finally, stance markers appear to play a fundamental role in shaping distinct argumentations across discourse communities, while effectively reflecting disciplinary voices.

Šmilauer – Tesnière – závislostní syntax

Šmilauer – Tesnière – závislostní syntax

Author(s): Jarmila Panevová,Patrice Pognan / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2024

The article compares two representative approaches to the description of dependency syntax: Šmilauer’s syntax for Czech (1947) and Tesnière’s structural syntax focused on syntax in general (1959). Similarities and differences between the two leading representatives of modern syntax are the object of comparison. The degree of general knowledge of Tesnière’s approach in the Czech environment is considered in the works of Šmilauer before Tesnière’s most comprehensive work was published. Both authors use graphic means to capture the syntactic structure of a sentence, called stemmata by Tesnière. Both authors, however, differ in their conception of the central sentence pair of syntactic structure: subject and predicate. While Šmilauer considers the subject to be the basic source of agreement for the predicate, for Tesnière the subject is one of the members dependent on the verb (in the same vein as the objects or adverbials). This approach then led Tesnière to introduce the notion of verbal valency reflecting the necessary participants in the action expressed by the verb. Both authors also differ in their representation of the order of words in the graphic representation: Šmilauer respects the surface order of words in the sentence structure, while Tesnière mostly places the actants to the left of the governing verb and the circumstants to the right.

The correlations between the average semester growth rates of syntactic and lexical complexity in L2 writing development at secondary school

The correlations between the average semester growth rates of syntactic and lexical complexity in L2 writing development at secondary school

Author(s): Katarzyna Rokoszewska / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The article is devoted to the development of language complexity in a relatively under-researched area of adolescent writing from the point of view of Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST). It describes the second part of a panel study which aimed to examine the relationships among the average semester growth rates (ASGRs) of specific measures of syntactic and lexical complexity within and between these two subsystems in writing in English as a foreign language at the secondary school level. The study involved the analysis of The Written English Developmental Corpus of Polish Learners (WEDCPL). The corpus, which comprises over 1900 essays, was created on the basis of 21 repeated measurements conducted in a group of 100 secondary school learners during a period of three years. With respect to the specific measures of syntactic and lexical complexity, the study indicated that nominalization developed faster than subordination and coordination, and that lexical variation developed faster than lexical density and sophistication per semester. Moreover, the relationships between the ASGRs of both syntactic and lexical measures were more supportive within than between the subsystems. The main pedagogical implication for English language teachers refers to fostering more coordinated development of language complexity at secondary school in the EFL context.

ИСТОЧНИКИ ГРАММАТИКАЛИЗАЦИИ КОННЕКТОРОВ РУССКОГО ЯЗЫКА (на материале базы Рускон)

Author(s): Irina Kobozeva,Natalia Serdobolskaya / Language(s): Russian Issue: 7/2024

This research article examines the sources of replenishment for the connective elements (clause linkers) in complex sentences, known as connectors, in modern Russian. Unlike studies focused on the etymological analysis of individual connectors, this study aims to identify the overarching trends in the derivation of connectors in the language from the XX and XXI centuries. The paper analyzes both morphosyntactically indecomposable units at the synchronic level and compound connectors. The research utilizes data from the RUSCON database, which contains examples and provides syntactic and semantic information on 670 Russian connectors. This database was compiled using various sources, including The Concise Academic Dictionary of the Russian Dictionary, The Unabridged Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian Language, D. N. Ushakov’s dictionary, dictionaries of function words edited by T. F. Efremova and V. V. Morkovkin, and the 1980 edition of the Russian Grammar. Additionally, connectors from the Constructicon database of the Russian National Corpus were incorporated into the study. The process of extracting connectors from these sources was conducted manually. For each connector, relevant information such as part of speech, meaning according to the sources, type (for particles), semantic field (according to the RUSCON classification), and sub-value was documented. This paper specifically analyzes new connectors — those not classified as conjunctions in the sources but labeled as ‘modal markers’, ‘adverbs functioning as conjunctions’, ‘conjunction phrase’, ‘analogues of conjunctions’, and similar categories. These units are classified based on their part-of-speech status and semantics. The study highlights the primary sources contributing to the inventory of connectors — abstract nouns and prepositions derived from them, adverbs (especially in the comparative degree), complexes of subordinators and conjunctions, subordinators with particles, and combinations of subordinators with the demonstrative pronoun ‘that’. The study of these new connectors sheds light on the new trends in the Russian language evolution during the XX and XXI centuries, underscoring the significance of this study.

KREATIVITETI NË TITUJ LIBRASH SHQIPTARË DHE TË HUAJ: ANALIZË GJUHËSORE DHE PËRQASËSE

Author(s): Edona Jahiu / Language(s): Albanian,English Issue: 21-22/2024

This paper talks about the creative side and the choice of the language in the names of literary books in the Albanian language in the literature of recent years, as well as the trends in foreign books, compared to Albanian ones. Also, they are viewed from the lexical-grammatical point of view. 50 young people were asked about their evaluation, reading level and how they perceive Albanian and foreign books. However, in terms of fulfilling readers' taste, the statistics have given us results of preferences for foreign authors. As for the approach analysis, it has been observed that there are significant attempts to modernize and increase subjectivism, compared to the more conventional ways, but not infrequently there is a reconnection with tradition. The presence of a freer land, after liberation from socialist realism in Albania, but with influence in Kosovo as well, literature that was produced as a result of effort and narrowing of the horizon, now literary creativity invites researchers and writers for an open system and creates potential to be enriched aesthetically, which is why there is similarity with western models and beyond. So, it is involved in a whirlwind of radical changes compared to the most classic works of the 20th century. Out of the past compositional schematization, it is now taking on a stable character. That’s because multiform refractions and experiments can be done, bring many colors and mixes within fiction, thus making today have a stable core of values and a creative spirit. Thus, Albanian writers tend to set new qualitative standards in authenticity and functional logic, for which Albanian literature is neither poor, nor inferior.

THE FUNCTIONAL AND ARTISTIC DIMENSIONS OF CONSTRUCTED LANGUAGES: FROM ESPERANTO TO NA’VI, KLINGON, AND TOLKIEN’S ELVISH LANGUAGES

Author(s): Bettina Ene / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

THIS PAPER DELVES INTO THE WORLD OF CONSTRUCTED LANGUAGES, TRACING THEIR ORIGINS, FUNCTIONS, AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE. OUR INQUIRY FOCUSES ON THE PURPOSES AND CHALLENGES THEREROF, CONSIDERING BOTH THEIR PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS AND ARTISTIC ALLURE. A KEY COMPONENT OF THE DISCUSSION IS A COMPARISON BETWEEN ESPERANTO — DESIGNED TO PROMOTE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION — WITH THE CINEMATIC LANGUAGES NA’VI AND KLINGON FEATURED IN “AVATAR“ AND “STAR TREK”. THE STUDY ALSO EXPLORES ICONIC LITERARY LANGUAGES, SUCH AS J.R.R. TOLKIEN’S ELVISH LANGUAGES, QUENYA AND SINDARIN, AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON LITERATURE AND LINGUISTICS. ADDITIONALLY, THE CINEMATIC LANGUAGES NA’VI AND KLINGON ARE EXAMINED WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THEIR RESPECTIVE MEDIA PRODUCTIONS. WHILE CONSTRUCTED LANGUAGES ARE OFTEN ENCOUNTERED IN FICTIONAL SETTINGS, THEY SERVE DIVERSE FUNCTIONS, RANGING FROM INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION TO ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. THE STUDY CONCLUDES THAT THE ANALYSIS OF CONSTRUCTED LANGUAGES OFFERS INTRIGUING ACADEMIC PERSPECTIVES AND HOLDS SIGNIFICANT SCHOLARLY RELEVANCE, PARTICULARLY IN UNDERSTANDING THEIR INTEGRATION INTO VARIOUS CINEMATIC PROJECTS.

MANIFESTATIONS OF IDENTITY AND ALTERITY IN ENGLISH: BETWEEN SEMANTIC DIVERGENCE AND STRUCTURAL CONVERGENCE

Author(s): Andrei BOLFOSU / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

This article is an attempt to investigate the divergences in meaning of the variants of English spoken worldwide under the semantic and structural perspective. From the philosophical standpoint, the identity/alterity dichotomy and/or unity is applicable to the scope of this article in that structural convergence falls under the definition of identity, whereas the semantic divergence is defined by the philosophical category of alterity. It is well-known that due to several factors as geographical isolation, cultural identity, regional features, along with others, have led to the development of new connotations ranging from shades of meaning to utterly novel significances, which may puzzle both native speakers originating from other regions or the non-native speakers. One of the aims of the present article is to elucidate the different meanings ascribed to the same words or structures in relation to the variants of English spoken in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, and a special emphasis has been put on the underlying differences between British and American concepts that may lead to ambiguities, which subsequently may grow into misunderstandings. Another aspect that we have considered here is the translation into Romanian of sentences containing such structures with differing concepts depending on the region where it is used. The third focus of this paper is to provide meaningful recommendations to the translators and/or language learners on avoiding the translation traps and correctly get the message of the sentence where a regionalism has been in use, or on being able to timely identify the non-standard meaning of the word. Nevertheless, the multiplicity of meanings attributed to English structures worldwide (alterity) is thought of as an asset rather than a loophole not only by linguists who study the incongruent-pace evolution of English in different corners of the world, but by the native speakers as well. Incidentally, thinkers as Levinas, Castoriadis, and Baudrillard describe the alterity as a transcendent phenomenon stimulating diversity, and hence, progress.

Author(s): Marina Dzhonova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2024

This study treats the formal types of interrogative utterances in media speech. Conclusions are based on data from the Corpus of Spoken Bulgarian BgSpeech as well as on media interview recordings from 2023. The data show that journalists use interrogative sentences with wh-word or with question particle in their speech, and none of these formal types prevails. It is much more frequent that both formal types are used within one and the same utterance. Interrogative utterances without a question word were also found, and they are marked as interrogative only by the intonation. Interrogative utterances are predominantly direct speech acts. Only unconventional indirect speech acts with particle li are characteristic for the communicative situation in media interview.
