In the Reality of the Cross

Author(s): Marta Nagy / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2018

Viewed from outside, a human life – our lives – resemble a horizontal line stretching from the moment of birth to the grave. The actual reality of our lives, however, unfolds in a vertical plan of height and depth, or more precisely, on both plans simultaneously. That is, to say:“in the reality of the cross”

Jedinstvo pojma i objekta Biti i svojstava Uzvišenog Boga u mišljenju Ibn Sinaa

Jedinstvo pojma i objekta Biti i svojstava Uzvišenog Boga u mišljenju Ibn Sinaa

Author(s): Muhammed Zabihi / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 21/2020

The paper aims to present Ibn Sina’s view of the relation between the attributes and the Essence of the Necessary Being. The issue of the attributes is of extraordinary importance, and it can be said that it is a part of the first and fundamental theological discussions in the Islamic world. Moreover, it can be considered an arena of conflict between the opposing and the affirmative views. There is no doubt that the extreme views on this issue had harmful consequences for scientific circles. In the wake of that, Ibn Sina’s theory (conceptual and objective unity of the attributes), which could be called a specific theory, is of extraordinary importance. The Ibn Sina’s view which opposes the known theory (objective unity and conceptual distinction between the attributes and the Essence) has not attracted much attention of scientific circles. Hence, by applying a new concept, the paper also aims to present Mulla Sadra’s view on the issue.

Do countries with different cultural, social and religious backgrounds behave the same way concerning women's representation on corporate boards?

Do countries with different cultural, social and religious backgrounds behave the same way concerning women's representation on corporate boards?

Author(s): Maria Luisa Esteban Salvador,Gonca Gungor Goksu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2017

This study focuses on female representation on corporate boards in Turkey and Spain, two countries in which clear differences exist in social, cultural and religious contexts. Using data from the most influential companies in the two states, we have investigated the presence of women in the boardrooms in 2014. We present new evidence on the comparison of outcomes of women's participation on boards. Results show differences in the involvement of women on the boards of major companies in Turkey and Spain. Statistical analysis suggests that the presence of women on the most powerful boards of directors of Spanish companies is higher than that of Turkish companies, and there are statistically significant differences between the two countries. This article offers insights to policy makers interested in analysing whether differences, values and beliefs between countries could influence the role of women in the decision-making process of the upper echelons of business.

РАЗЧИСТВАНЕ НА ВАРНЕНСКИ „АВГИЕВИ“ ОБОРИ

Author(s): Dimitar Chanev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2020

The cyclical 12-year calendar is marked each year by its zodiacal symbol. Among them is the year of the astrological, imaginary, heavently fire-breathing dragon. The word „Sklav/Slav“ means heavenly dragon. The image of St. George, a victor, presents the killing of a dragon near a lake with sacrilegious girl in which a symbolic murder of the Slav was concealed. In the lakes and rivers live snakes and St. George must kill a snake, not a dragon, a symbol of the Slavs. Do scientists think that presidents, patriarchs of Slavic countries must necessarily change?

Relations between Christians and Muslims in kadi court registers (sicils) and Franciscan chronicles of the 18th century

Relations between Christians and Muslims in kadi court registers (sicils) and Franciscan chronicles of the 18th century

Author(s): Dijana Pinjuh / Language(s): English Issue: 7/2021

Based on kadi sicils and Franciscan chronicles, this paper seeks to present a picture of everyday lives of Christians and Muslims during a turbulent period, marked by political turmoil, unrest and general insecurity. Attacks, murders and various other acts of violence were part of everyday life. The ruling class of the time often abused their position and acted beyond their authority, putting additional pressure on the Christian population and further aggravating their social position and security within Eyalet of Bosnia. The efforts of the authorities to protect reaya were only temporarily effective in stopping the violence. The perpetrators of violence were mostly indiscriminate concerning their targets as Muslims were also targeted. Despite unfavorable political circumstances, social and religious differences, Muslims and Christians privately used to help each other, socialize and cooperate.

EPISCOPUL MELCHISEDEC ŞTEFĂNESCU (1823-1892) – IUBITOR AL CĂRȚII ŞI CULTURII ROMÂNEŞTI

Author(s): Vasile Secrieru / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1-2/2020

The appearance of this publication of a lover and great patriot of the Romanian book and culture, man of books and pens, theologian and historian - Bishop Melchisedec Ștefănescu (1823-1892). In the article the author writes about Melchisedec Stefanescu (1823-1892), leading figure of the age, participant in the Unification of the Romanian, delegated in the Ad-hoc Divan in 1857. Melchisedec had a fruitful activity, culminating with his election in 1860 (even if for a very short term), as the Minister of Cults and Instruction in Kogalniceanu’s government. In 1860 he became Lieutenant of bishop at Husi, bishop of the new established Bishopric of the Lower Danube (1865) and Bishop of Roman (1879), where he will pastor until his death (16th May 1892). An other important moment of his career was gaining the dignity of being an active member of the Romanian Academy in 1870. He paid attention to the activities of libraries and considered „the issue of founding libraries as important as schools”. Melchisedec Stefanescu’s multilateral personality (scholar, priest and writer) was completed by thatof a patriot. His role and involvement, far from being secondary, made possible the transition from tradition to modernity and progress.

La “Glose” de Richard Fishacre sur la distinction 26 du premier livre des “Sentences” de Pierre Lombard

Author(s): Fabio Gibiino / Language(s): French Issue: XXVl/2020

This study is devoted to a doctrinal and philological analysis of Richard Fishacre’s commentary on distinction 26 in Pierre Lombard’s first Book of Sentences. The subject of this distinction is the nature of the relationship in the Trinity: how, then, can one speak of a relationship in God while safeguarding its simplicity? To see how Fishacre has resolved this question, we have first supplied the background to this distinction. First, we looked at the doctrine of relationship according to St. Augustine, being the author who bequeathed to posterity the language and reflection to resolve objections against simplicity and divine immutability. Next, we have analysed the contributions of Peter Abelard and Gilbert de la Porrée, because, even within their limits, they marked a turning point in Trinitarian speculation with the use of dialectics and metaphysics. We have continued our study, dwelling on Fishacre’s Trinitarian reflection and how, having in mind the difficulty Gilbert de la Porrée found himself in, he proposed an identity relationship of the subsisting relation (quod est) to the essence (quo est). We concluded our study with the figure of Thomas Aquinas to show, in the ten years that separated them, not only the evolution of the literary genre of the commentary of the Sentences, but a more mature and rigorous elaboration of the Trinitarian doctrine. Finally, the influence exerted by Hugues de Saint-Cher on Fishacre led us to transcribe Hugues’ commentary and show the differences and autonomy of Fishacre. After having collated the 10 handwritten witnesses for the first book of Sentences, philological analysis enabled us firstly to note a common archetype and secondly to identify two branches of the textual tradition, one of which (Ω) proved to be closer to the archetype than the text of the Ψ model.

Fundamentum doctrine Joachim. U początków badań nad wizją dziejów opata z Fiore

Author(s): Jan Grzeszczak / Language(s): Polish Issue: XXVl/2020

The article presents the first attempt at a comprehensive and critical view on the vision of the history of Joachim of Fiore (1135–1202), that is, the so-called “Protocol of Anagni” from the mid-13th century, a collection of the results of a papal commission convened by Alexander IV to examine the case of the Franciscan theologian Gerard of Borgo San Donnino. An analysis of a fragment of the “Protocol”, where the papal theologians presented the foundations of the doctrine of Joachim of Fiore, the Calabrian Abbot, was carried out. Attention was drawn to a precise selection of works by Joachim of Fiore, which the commission used to research the legacy of this author in the doctrinal aspect. Both the selection of the fragments of works by Joachim of Fiore, as well as the relatively brief period of time of a mere several dozen years after his death, make the Protocol of Anagni compelling research material, which cannot be overlooked in the study of Joachim’s legacy. This is the first in-depth and, more importantly, source-based presentation and critical assessment of the historical and theological vision of this 12th-century author, one that is astonishing in its vitality, stretching from the Middle Ages to modern times.

HRVATSKO GLAGOLJSKO TISUĆLJEĆE

HRVATSKO GLAGOLJSKO TISUĆLJEĆE

Author(s): Mile Bogović / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/1998

In the first part, the author gives a brief presentation of dioceses, whose districts were for a long time under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Senj. Those dioceses were: Senj, Krbava, Modruš and Otočac. The Bishop of Senj was for the first time mentioned in the letter of pope Innocent the First (402 - 417) and after that again only in 1169. The diocese of Krbava was founded in 1185. Its administrative centre was at Krbava. Mostly for the danger of Turks, bishop's headquarters were moved to Modruš and in 1493, the year of battle at Krbava, bishop was forced to escape to Novi Vinodolski. That diocese was around 1630 legally united to the diocese of Senj. For some time (1460 - 1534) in Gacka existed special diocese of Otočac. After liberation from Turks, under the administrative control of the Bishop of Senj came Lika and Krbava. Glagolitic script and old Slavic service were in use on thewhole area outside diocese headquarters since the 9th c. When in the 13th c. it seemed to the pontifikate that the old Slavic liturgy might prove useful in uniting orthodox Slavs with the Catholic church, pope Innocent the Fourth on the 29th March 1248 granted to Bishop Philip of Senj permision to glorify the God in old Slavic language wherever such a practice had already been in use. Thus, in the glagolitic circles entered also the Bishop of Senj and all his canons. Such a support to the glagolitism reflected very favourably on the religious and cultural activities of the Croatian glagolitic priests laying so the foundation to the golden age of the Croatian glagolitic culture. On that region will very soon develop numerous glagolitic codes of high artistic level and will also appear our first glagolitic printing-houses. The author further gives the survey of all clerical and printig activities and most of all the activities associated with Senj. He presents also his own reflections on the role of Martin Živković, the goldsmith from Senj, in the activities of the glagolitic printing-house at Senj. He introduces also one written document wherefrom some have deduced that before the foundation of printing-house from Senj there was one still older at Kosinj. When the glagolitic priests of modern world were not able to prepare required glagolitic books for printing, that task was then taken over by the Congregation for the Propagation of Faith at Rome (Propaganda), but under the influence of the Ruthenian monks our liturgical books have been russianized. For that reason, priests from our territories were hardly prepared to accept them and they gradually passed in liturgy to latin script and national language. In view of the fact that in those times it was not able that such a practice would get a consent from Rome, Dragutin ParČić prepares in 1893 glagolitic missal in which he restored Croatian editing. Likewise, since in those times the question of the old Slavic language in liturgy was a bit politicized, the people in dioceses of Senj and Modruš did not want to use in liturgy old Slavic instead of their national language. There were opposition even among some priests. Although the glagolitic missal was in the end in general accepted, it was nevertheless clear that the clergy was loath to learning glagolitic script. So, in 1927 Josip Vajs prepared new glagolitic missal but with latin script. In the first part of the 13th c. glagolitic monuments were occuring seldom which somehow suggested that glagolitism on our territory was on its beam ends. After the pope's letter to the Bishop Philip of Senj, the relations towards the glagolitism were changed in its favour, which may concede the conclusion that pope Innocent the Fourth and Bishop Philip of Senj were restorers of the glagolitism and old Slavic liturgy.

Diritto alla pace, giustizia e „guerra giusta”

Diritto alla pace, giustizia e „guerra giusta”

Author(s): Gaetano Dammacco / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Today, a third world war is taking place in pieces (Pope Francis) against the expectations born after the fall of the bipolar system. Conflicts today are fourth-generation wars, in which the subjects and the geopolitical scenario have changed. Wars pose the problem of the relationship between peace and justice. The right to peace (as a human right and as a constitutional value) is not yet recognised: this right would make all wars illegitimate. The right to peace requires the elimination of injustices generated by wars justified by deviant reasons and words. There are words, such as “peace” and “justice”, which cannot have a relativistic meaning because they express a higher value; they express the “just”. The legitimation of war (ius ad bellum) and the rules of conduct (ius in bello) affect various sectors (theological, philosophical, historical, juridical). Christianity was a turning point on the theme of the “just war”. The Enlightenment began the reflection on the value of peace in parallel with the common mentality, for which war is independent of any moral evaluation and only serves to achieve other political objectives (Clausewitz). This conception produced dramatic disasters in the twentieth century, generating two world wars and other violent armed conflicts. The theme of just war after World War II has engaged thinkers and theologians. In the secular world, the positions of Norberto Bobbio (supporter of legal pacifism) and Michael Walzer (just war as a defence out of necessity) are of particular interest. These ideas are representative and important but limited because they do not consider religious values. Religious values are important for building peace, according to the Gospel. The reflection on just war in Christianity was initiated by St Augustine and was continued by St Thomas Aquinas. But the current wars demand the development of reflection on the basis of the papal magisterium as well (John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis), from which some conflicting indications arise: war is always unjust, or war of defence is just if it is used to defend man, his rights, and the common good. Religions have the task of building peace through dialogue.

Implementacja posynodalnej adhortacji apostolskiej Amoris laetitia papieża Franciszka w duszpasterstwie związków nieregularnych w diecezji płockiej

Implementacja posynodalnej adhortacji apostolskiej Amoris laetitia papieża Franciszka w duszpasterstwie związków nieregularnych w diecezji płockiej

Author(s): Wojciech Kućko / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2020

The publication of the post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris laetitia in the spring of 2016 met with a response in the Diocese of Płock. The main purpose of the article is to describe how the papal guidelines were implemented in the diocese regarding non-sacramental relationships and marriages. The text briefly presents the history of the pastoral care of non-sacramental marriages in Mazovia and then discusses the contemporary forms of accompanying people in irregular situations in light of the paradigm of Pope Francis, expressed in the verbs: accept – accompany – discern – integrate. In the Diocese of Płock, this was expressed not only in the establishment of a new Department for Families in the diocesan curia and the creation of new pastoral structures for non-sacramental marriages, which the pope called “irregular” situations or relationships but also in theological and pastoral reflection undertaken among pastors and laypeople. This issue was developed in a special way in the document Vademecum of Pastoral Care of People Living in Irregular Unions in the Diocese of Płock from 2018, prepared by those responsible for the pastoral care of families and signed by the bishop of Płock. The document was an attempt to implement the teaching of the pope in the conditions of the Church of Płock. The Diocese of Płock is the only diocese in Poland to date to undertake the task of a practical, pastoral confrontation of the indications of the Amoris laetitia exhortation in the pastoral reality. The Vademecum text contains numerous specific answers to the questions of how people living in various types of irregular relationships can participate in the life of the parish and what forms of participation in the community of the Church are unavailable to them for various reasons.

Biblia dla kobiet. Spór o duchowość kobiety

Biblia dla kobiet. Spór o duchowość kobiety

Author(s): Jarosław Łapucha / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2020

For a long time in the Polish Church, a growing popularity of spirituality related to gender has been observed. New ministrative, retreatal or even editorial suggestions emerge that are intended only for either women or men. Nevertheless, when taking into consideration women’s spirituality, it must be noted that there is currently no single, binding model. In public debates, there have been disputes concerning the role and proper place for women in the Church and in the world. The aforementioned polemics also regard the paradigm of woman’s spirituality. An example of this is the discussion centred on the Polish version of The Bible for Women, published in 2020. Ongoing disputes revealed the diverse attitudes of women themselves towards the matter of understanding femininity as such, as well as women’s spirituality. The aim of this research is to portray the feud over the spirituality of the modern woman based on the dispute over The Bible for Women. This problem is discussed against the background of the phenomenon of editions of Holy Scripture intended for women to depict the differences in defining the women’s spirituality through two separate models. Thereafter, the Polish version of The Bible for Women is analysed with regard to additional content that was included in this publication. The essential part of this research is devoted to outlining and analysing the dispute over the abovementioned publication. At the same time, the author aims to portray the way women’s spirituality is currently defined, along with showing the way in which it is understood and appraised.

Struktura terenowej administracji wyznaniowej PRL na przykładzie Wydziału do Spraw Wyznań w Zielonej Górze w latach 1950–1972

Author(s): Dariusz Mazurkiewicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2020

The post-war internal policy of the communist authorities of the Polish People’s Republic was aimed at taking over all aspects of social life. Therefore, this policy could not ignore the interest in the community dimension of human religiosity, as it was seen as a threat to building a new order based on a materialistic vision of a man. There was no room in such an approach for harmonious cooperation between the state authorities and the Catholic Church. Even the need to rebuild the country after the war, especially in the so-called “Recovered Territories”, and to create the state administration from scratch and organise social life did not induce the authorities to seek a mutual understanding. On the contrary, the process of the systematic removal of the Church from public life was initiated. A specialised governmental body for Church matters was created to achieve this goal. At the central level, it was the Office for Religious Affairs, while in provinces, local units were established to interfere with the activities of particular churches. One of them was the Department for Religious Affairs in Zielona Góra, which covered all matters concerning religious associations, especially Church administration in the capital, Gorzów Wielkopolski. The Department tried to shape the religious policy by influencing the filling of Church positions and issuing orders aimed at obtaining supervision over the seminaries and parish catechesis. Decisions were also made regarding the disposal of sacred and Church buildings, and, in matters related to the financial activities of the Church, opinions were given by the financial departments of the state administration before making the decision. The Faculty’s policy was not independent. The action plan towards the Gorzów Church was developed by the Department for Religious Affairs in Zielona Góra in conjunction with the Administrative Department of the Provincial Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party and the 4th Department of the Provincial Citizens Militia Headquarters. Finally, it consulted with the Administrative Department of the Central Committee, as this was the committee that pursued the long-term goals of the denominational policy defined by successive conventions of the Polish United Workers’ Party. Detailed instructions for the Faculty of Zielona Góra also came from the Office for Religious Affairs in Warsaw, which participated in the preparation of individual legal acts concerning the Catholic Church and supervised the religious policy conducted in local departments. All these activities were to serve the planned atheisation of society.

Stanowisko Kościoła katolickiego wobec szczepionek przeciw Covid-19

Stanowisko Kościoła katolickiego wobec szczepionek przeciw Covid-19

Author(s): Marcin Szczodry / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2020

Research on the development of new vaccines, their production, distribution, and the vaccination process itself have raised some moral issues. The COVID-19 pandemic has provoked a debate on ethical issues concerning vaccination among various communities (medical, bioethical, ecclesiastical, and political). The aim of this article is to review official documents of the Catholic Church that present its position on COVID-19 vaccines. In light of the analyses of the documents issued by both the Holy See and selected Episcopal Conferences, it is apparent that the topic has received much attention during the ongoing pandemic. The documents of the Church issued prior to the pandemic address the topic of vaccines mainly within the context of moral questions associated with the use of biological material of illicit origin (i.e. abortion) in the production process. The documents that followed thoroughly examine the issue of vaccines from an ethical perspective and deal with a number of various questions (e.g. personal responsibility related to getting vaccinated or refusing to get vaccinated; international cooperation on financing research and distribution of vaccines; the accessibility of the vaccines to the poorest and developing countries; making profits on the sales of vaccines; ensuring clear and transparent criteria to determine vaccine eligibility). This allows for a clear point of reference for believers when making a decision on receiving the vaccine. Those responsible for making political, logistic, or organisational decisions related to vaccination programs at different levels are provided with clear criteria to help them evaluate their decisions from a moral perspective.

UN TEXT POLEMIC DIN A DOUA JUMĂTATE A VEACULUI AL XVIII-LEA ȘI SEMNIFICAȚIILE SALE

Author(s): Ioan-Augustin Guriţă / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 57/2020

In 1768, in the context of religious tensions in Transylvania, after the “revolution” of Sofronie de la Cioara, an Orthodox priest from Banat, named Mihail Popovici, copied a very interesting text, which contains historical and theological information. This text reflects very well the role of Russian propaganda which, at the beginning of a new war with the Turks (1768–1774), used Orthodoxy as a means of convincing those living in Transylvania that it was the protector of those who did not renounce this denomination and refused the Union with the Church of Rome. Priest Popovici made a trip to Russia in 1770, where he himself recounted the “troubles” his compatriots and co-religionists were going through. In the same manuscript in which his account of his journey is found, there is also this polemical letter addressed to the inhabitants of Transylvania. Some short fragments, considered the most important, were published by N. Iorga in 1901. The text has an obvious polemical touch and I considered it worth a complete edition, because it not only captures the problem of the genesis of a new “otherness” in the Romanian and Christian space, but, in addition to its historical value, highlights the way in which an anti-Greek-Catholic theological discourse was formed after the union of a large part of the Transylvanian Orthodox Romanians with the Church of Rome. Also, the text has, for that period, its meanings, not only theological, but also historical, ideological and political, especially in the context in which it was composed and preserved. The arguments present in this passage are of a relative theological finesse, based on a good knowledge of the Holy Bible text, which shows us that it had a source of inspiration produced in a rather refined Church environment, where the subtleties of this field were well known. Therefore, a full and in-depth look at this manuscript reveals, in addition to the attitudes of sympathy or hostility shown towards some, respectively against others, the way in which the “anti-unionist” discourse took shape, especially in the second half of the 18th century, a period in which ties with neighbouring Orthodox spaces were “strangled” by the control of the Austrian imperial authorities. The text also reflects Russia's role, propaganda and involvement in supporting Transylvanian Orthodox during tense religious events. What is certain is that the text brings together a good connoisseur of the realities related to the tensions between the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic denominations in Transylvania, in the middle of the 18th century

Învățătura ortodoxă despre minte la Sf. Grigorie de Nazianz

Author(s): Valentin Marian Cocan / Language(s): Greek, Ancient (to 1453),Romanian Issue: 10-12/2020

In the lines below are, in translation, three Greek texts with an important dogmatic contribution. The translation is accompanied by an introductory study. The study aims to examine, to specify the foundations of the heresy of Apollinaris of Laodicea (ca. 310-392) and to fill this gap in the study of his doctrine. The whole Apollinarian system is based on the Greek notion of ἐνανθρώπησις, misinterpreted in the Greek way of thinking. For common thought, and therefore for Apollinaris, two perfect beings cannot be united, that is, the perfect God cannot form a single reality with a complete man. St. Gregory the Theologian will oppose to this heresy the soteriological argument, stated thus: "τὸ γὰρ ἀπρόσληπτον, ἀθεράπευτον" ("for that which is not assumed is not healed"). At the same time, this study examines the exchanges between the new Christian culture - freshly born - and the dominant philosophical thinking.
