Kobiecy dyskurs podróżniczy na przykładzie "Mojej wyprawy na Pamiry w roku 1929" Jadwigi Toeplitz-Mrozowskiej

Author(s): Agata Zawiszewska / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The article proposes a critical reading of the report from a journey to Russia by Jadwiga Toeplitz-Mrozowska "La Prima spedizione italiana attraverso i Pamiri 1929" (Società Georgafica Italiana: Roma 1930). The tools used to the analysis and interpretation of the text come from the instruments of gender and postcolonial studies. By means of them, the entanglement of the emancipation discourse into a patriarchal colonial discourse was presented, reflected in three areas of narration: the status of an emancipated European woman as an imperialist, a picture of a “Russian woman” as a “loner”, identification of the criteria of emancipation with the West-European civilization mission in the USSR.

Podwórkowa powieść polityczna – "Wióry" Krystyny Kofty

Author(s): Arleta Galant / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The author of the article discusses "Wióry", a novel by Krystyna Kofta, published in 1980. The most important interpretation motives concerning the work written by a Polish female writer are connected with the issues related to a political narration and ideology of the space that is organized by the worlds of child and adult characters. A backyard in Poznań – the place of action – was perceived here as a specific (both a private and public) conventional sphere being a reflection of complicated social relations of the Stalin era.

Zmaganie z „syndromem wygnania”. O "Unsere" Jana Darowskiego

Author(s): Agnieszka Nęcka / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The article reminds us of Jan Darowski, a writer almost unknown in Poland until recently. The author pays special attention to his autobiographic novel entitled "Unsere", that was published as late as in 2012 and constitutes a unique record of an experience of a war man who grew up in Silesia on the Polish-German borderline, was conscripted to Wehrmacht during war, and, subsequently, escaped to the ally army in order to fight with Germans. Writings having an auto-therapeutic overtone allowed him to search himself and his place in the world. A battle with the “syndrome of exile” was connected with the need to give evidence on the past and people who created it. The past, influencing the present made “I” from the past overlap with “I” from the present. As a result, the character from "Unsere" is a hostage of his own memories. Searching himself is also the need to be a part of the group. Thanks to it, what is personal and individual permeated and supplemented what is collective. What is deposited remained in a privatememory was connected with what was located in the culture, giving fundaments of his own identity.

Terminologia „motylowa” w „motylniczych” dziełach naukowych XIX wieku

Author(s): Urszula Sokólska / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

Increased interests of 19th century scientists in entomological names resulted from considerable terminological confusion in the field. Attempts at systematizing the existing terms and introducing new ones, more adequately reflecting the features of specific butterflies, were made, among others, by Teofil Żebrawski in his monograph „Owady łuskoskrzydłe czyli motylowate z okolic Krakowa” and Maksymilian Siła Nowicki in two works considered as fundamental by his contemporaries: „Projekt polskiéj nomenklatury motylów krajowych” and „Motyle Galicyi”. This article provides an overview of the “butterly terminology” proposed in these works.

O relacji mistrz – uczeń w kształceniu historycznojęzykowym

Author(s): Barbara Mitrenga / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The article is a reflection on historical-linguistic education in didactics of Polish language in Poland. On the one hand the author was inspired to take up this theme by headword of Congress of Historical Linguists, ie. „Historical Linguistics – Protecting the Future, Respecting the Past” (Katowice, 13–15 April 2016). On the other hand an inspiration of this elaboration was a book „Signs of memory” edited by Maciej Grochowski and Zofia Zaron dedicated to the great Polish linguists of the second half of the twentieth century. The author shares her insights on historical-linguistic education at the academic level, noting the need to strengthen master – student relationship. In addition she discusses the method of tutoring which is based on individual cooperation between master (tutor) and his/her student. Moreover she indicates a few possibilities of using this method in historical-linguistic education with students.

„Na tropach przeszłości języka” – czy gramatyka historyczna może być interesująca dla podejmujących studia polonistyczne?

Author(s): Ewa Oronowicz-Kida,Agnieszka Myszka / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

Ewa Oronowicz-Kida and Agnieszka Myszka try to answer a question whether knowledge about the history of language may be interesting for former grammar school pupils. The authors analyse the position of historical and language issues in the national curriculum at all levels of school education and use a questionnaire to check knowledge of former secondary school pupils in this respect. An analysis of questionnaires leads us to conclusion that recent secondary school graduates know selected issues from the history of language, but they lack any knowledge about historical grammar. However, young people see in contemporary Polish language certain phenomena resulting from development of language that they would like to have explained. The authors are of the opinion that, at the level of university education, you cannot resign from relaying at least basic knowledge about mechanisms of language development, however, it should be done in close connection with an analysis of literature and culture.

Author(s): Ewa Woźniak / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

Two volume set of „Selected Essays on the History of Polish Language” edited by Marek Cybulski was published by the University of Łódź Publishing House in 2015. This edition compiles texts ranging from the oldest ones such as „Bulla gnieźnieńska” („Bull of Gniezno”) to those from the first decades of the 21st century. They are presented in the chronological order and arranged in such a way that one can easily compare them according to the theme, style and literary genre. The article presents the possibilities of using this edition in university teachings, for example by showing the formation of genres (e.g. advertising) or by exposing influence of pragmatic factors on linguistic layer of the text.

„Polski słownik etymologiczny” Profesora Witolda Mańczaka

Author(s): Leszek Bednarczuk / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

In his academic work, Professor Witold Mańczak (1924–2012) explored thoroughly the questions of general and comparative linguistics of Indo-European, particularly Romance and Slavic, languages; especially the irregular phonetic development caused by frequency. He applied this concept to the Polish etymology, which bore fruit in a form of „Polish Etymological Dictionary” (in Polish; Kraków 2017, 238 pp. + CD-ROM). This dictionary’s major advantage is the fact that exact counterparts (instead of pre-language reconstructions established in accordance with laryngeal theory) in selected Slavic and Indo-European languages are provided therein, coupled with borrowings from Western European languages; the latter being indirect sources for words of exotic languages entering Polish. As an illustration of this approach may serve the following entries: bagnet, bóg, brat, bruk, car, chata, donica, dziś, gołąb, hrabia, jeden, jestem, każdy, kiełbasa, księga, mierzeja, olbrzym, włoszczyzna.

Genologiczne uwarunkowania szkolnego dyskursu kronikarskiego. Rekonesans

Author(s): Izabela Kaczmarzyk / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

Unique copies of school chronicles consist a valuable part of local documentation heritage. In many cases, their significance becomes even more pronounced, given that – contrary to many historical documents – a lot of them survived the times of unrest. A school chronicle regarded as a text of culture belongs, in its material aspect, to the group of the so‑called remembering objects, and in its nonmaterial aspect, it sheds new light on the process of uncovering and interpreting or reinterpreting of the cultural past. From this perspective, school chronicles allow not only to construct a timeline of the local history, but also constitute one of the foundational elements of public discourse. As a historical source, school chronicles remain rather underutilized. Such chronicles, once upon a time, existed in all educational facilities, as they constituted an important document. Contemporarily, the presence of such chronicles in schools is more of a tradition, since chronicles ceased to perform their reporting and evaluating functions, and transformed into a kind of occasional writing.

Kazania Peregryna z Opola w świetle procesu świdnickich beginek z 1332 roku

Author(s): Marcin Kiełbus / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The aim of the article is to direct the attention of the public to the heretofore neglected relationship between the popular volume of the sermons of Peregryn of Opole and the bourgeoning anti‑heretical discourse of the turn of the 13th century, in which the Dominican Order remained deeply involved. The article focuses on the figure of the author mainly in the context of the activity of the Inquisition, but also in the context of the secular reforms of the Fourth Council of the Lateran, which adopted a polemic stance with regard to insubordinate devotion.

„Metamorfozy” Owidiusza w przekładzie Stanisława Schneidra

Author(s): Dariusz Rott / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The article presents the figure of an esteemed classical philologist, historian of literature, translator and teacher at the secondary schools in Przemyśl and Lvov, Stanisław Schneider (1858–1917). His translatorial debut consisted of “excerpts from ancient poets.” He translated Homer, Horace, Ovid and Vergil. The collected works were then published in „The Report of the Headmaster of the Imperial‑Royal Secondary School in Przemyśl for the School Year 1888”. It was the third full translation of Ovid’s „Metamorphoses” into Polish (after the 17th‑century translations by Jakub Żebrowski and Walerian Otwinowski). Moreover, the article contains excerpts from Schneider’s translation of Ovid’s „Metamorphoses”.

Граф Дракула и художествените образи на злото: Имагологии, идеологии, туризъм

Author(s): Nikolay Papuchiev / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

The article is focused on the role and the power of the horror and terror literature and movies to create very popular images, which become important factors in the developing of contemporary tourism. These supernatural creatures have turned into objects of cult for big fan-groups all over the world. The fans share common interests reflecting – along with the rest – the longing to see the special places that inspired authors and moviemakers. In this way, Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, used as a basis for many literature and movie interpretations during 20th and the first two decades of the 21st century, has become an influential generator of images for mass consumption. The bloodthirsty Count gathers strength in people’s imaginations during the years and changes the historical medieval fortress – Bran Castle – into a very popular museum, visited by different people striving to see his scary home.

Версии на литературен перипатетизъм в романа на модернизма

Версии на литературен перипатетизъм в романа на модернизма

Author(s): Cleo Protohristova / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

It is generally acknowledged that the fundamental anthropological modus of walking once transformed from a necessary and indispensable human activity into a matter of individual choice, emerged as ideology and was simultaneously appropriated into the realm of „the fictive and the imaginary“ (in W. Iser’s terminology), which brought about the conceptualization of the literary peripatetic. Meanwhile, attributed to that same modern ideology was an ancient legacy traced back to Aristotle’s school of philosophy. The paper is concerned with the re-actualization of the peripapetic in Modernism – that is to say, with the conceptual, cultural, and textual aspects ofwalking, represented in modernist novels, evaluated in the perspective of the alternating historical, ideological, aesthetic, philosophical, and poetical contexts, that construct the complex narrative rationalizing the interconnectedness between walking and thinking, and walking and writing.

Българската класика чете италианската

Българската класика чете италианската

Author(s): Boyka Ilieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

The focus of the current study is the perception of the Italian literary classics by influential figures in Bulgarian literature like Iv. Vazov, K. Velichkov, P. Yavorov, P. P. Slaveykov and K. Hristov. It is traced in several aspects – preferences for specific authors, translation activity and literary criticism. In various sources, the Bulgarian classical authors displayed an affinity for Dante, F. Petrarca, T. Tasso, U. Foscolo, G. Leopardi and the “national poet of Italy” G. Carducci. Their works were distributed in Bulgaria through the translations of Vazov, Velichkov and Hristov. In some cases, the foreign classical authors had an inspiring effect on the original works of established Bulgarian writers. Thus, for example, Vazov immortalized in verse Dante, Tasso and Leopardi. Velichkov eulogized Dante and Petrarca, and Slaveykov – Michelangelo. Velichkov wrote a critical sketch of Dante, Hristov – of Foscolo, and Yavorov translated a feature story about Carducci.

„Jedność obywatelska” w Ikonologii Cesarego Ripy

Author(s): Joanna Partyka / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The Iconology of Cesare Ripa (published in 1593), a compendium of allegorical and symbolic depictions of abstract concepts, was widely known throughout Europe until the 19th century. This abundant inventive reservoir had been frequently used in argumentation referring to the persuasive power of image. The concepts personified in Ripa's work are values in the light of the theories by Meyer and Perelman. The article focuses on the rhetorical dimension of the allegory of the "Civil Union" (Unione Civile) and on other related allegories ("Consent", "Democracy"). The reference is made to rhetorical devices aimed at praising the values of civil society. The sources of inventiveness and the perpetuation of the idea are indicated. Also, the comparison of the iconographic composition and Ripa's text with other emblematic compendia of later period is made.

Ethiopian-Israeli Women In Academia: A Gender Equality Plan Within The Framework Of Change Project

Ethiopian-Israeli Women In Academia: A Gender Equality Plan Within The Framework Of Change Project

Author(s): Hana Himi / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

This study focuses on the coping and experiences of Ethiopian-Israeli women during their studies for advanced degrees, and describes the elements of success and the unique barriers that they face. The literature review presents the intersecting identity approach, which was formed by American scholars and was adapted to the Israeli case. We emphasize the challenges of the gender-race combination, assuming that these two identity factors cannot be disconnected here and that their combination creates unique challenges. Various emotional, cognitive, mental, social, economic and cultural aspects of the Ethiopian immigration to Israel and their significance, separately and combined, are considered as the background of the women’s intersecting identity. The research method was qualitative, and included ten semi-open interviews with women who had PhDs or were in various stages of acquiring advanced degrees. Our findings indicate that barriers that are unique to women who cope with an intersecting identity can be identified and defined. The barriers are varied – from lack of information about the requirements of the Israeli academic system, to coping with emotional and conflictual overload due to their desire to study and their inability to support their family of origin whether financially or emotionally, to an absence of instrumental resources to fund their studies. Coping with their intersecting identity vis-à-vis the academic system was characterized by mental resilience thanks to their personality characteristics, self-confidence, curiosity, and aspiration to develop and succeed together with their considerable ability to adapt to the various demands presented to them and to excel in their achievements. The conclusions of the study focus on the changes that happened in their life: the awareness to promote the representation of Ethiopian-Israeli women in academia, and to create a supportive environment on the personal and academic level. These women can serve as role-models and Mentors for other women in the Ethiopian-Israeli community and for women from other minority groups, and facilitate a pluralistic, multicultural academic system. Additionally, the structural and social barriers should be removed through promoting awareness and policies of equality and fair distribution of public resources.

Hishām ibn al-Kalbi’s Kitāb al-Khayl

Author(s): Hylke Hettema / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

This chapter explores the content of the premodern Arabic document Kitāb al-Khayl and the modes of transmission which resulted in it being frequently referenced in popular narratives of the history of the Arab horse. Contextualising the work shows that it is part of early Islamic reimagining of the past in order to create a history for emerging Arab identity during the early Islamic period. Contrary to the modern idea that this work represents the first Arab horse stud-book, the “Book of Horses” by Hisham ibn al-Kalbi (d.ca. 819 CE) cannot be viewed as evi-dence of an ancient breeding tradition among the Arabs.

Le rôle du traducteur dans l'esthétique de la réception. Sauvetage de l’étrangeté et / ou consentement à la perte

Author(s): Georgiana Lungu-Badea / Language(s): French Publication Year: 0

The author's primary aim in this article is to evoke Jauss’ aesthetics of reception in order to (re)situate the translator in what she calls the aesthetics of translation reception adjusted by the translator. To this purpose, Georgiana Lungu-Badea tries to distinguish direct reception (of the receptor-translator and the source-reader) from “indirect” reception (of the target-reader). From the perspective of various dichotomies, three- and four-parts classifications, the author identifies four types of entropic agreements – determined, more or less, by linguistic hospitality or by the desire to translate. These agreements inevitably influence the aesthetics (of betrayal/fidelity) of the translated work. In order to illustrate the essential role played by the translator in the process of reception, the aesthetic differences are illustrated by mentioning a number of Romanian translations.
