Summary/Abstract: The Iconology of Cesare Ripa (published in 1593), a compendium of allegorical and symbolic depictions of abstract concepts, was widely known throughout Europe until the 19th century. This abundant inventive reservoir had been frequently used in argumentation referring to the persuasive power of image. The concepts personified in Ripa's work are values in the light of the theories by Meyer and Perelman. The article focuses on the rhetorical dimension of the allegory of the "Civil Union" (Unione Civile) and on other related allegories ("Consent", "Democracy"). The reference is made to rhetorical devices aimed at praising the values of civil society. The sources of inventiveness and the perpetuation of the idea are indicated. Also, the comparison of the iconographic composition and Ripa's text with other emblematic compendia of later period is made.
