Успение Кирилово в южнославянската православна традиция (= Кирило-Методиевски студии. Кн. 28. Кирило-Методиевски извори. Т. 3).

Author(s): Boyka Mircheva / Language(s): Bulgarian

Since the moment of its discovery, the Short Vita of Cyril (Assumption of Cyril) has been incorporated in the Slavic Cyrillo-Methodian sources on a regular basis. Scholars exploring the work of Cyril and Methodius and their disciples have been using this text as a complement to their main research material. The text of Assumption of Cyril is significantly less explored in comparison to the rest of the Slavic Cyrillo-Methodian sources and so far there hasn’t been a complete edition of this important work based on all extant copies. This study seeks to collect, publish and explore all known copies of Assumption of Cyril contained in different types of codices. This, on the other hand, calls for examining the reasons for its inclusion in the manuscripts, in which it functions, thus forming a complete picture of the textual history of Assumption of Cyril in the context of the literary and cultural history of the Balkans. The drawn textological parallels don’t confirm the hypothesis of the text’s archaic nature. The dependence of the text on Vita Methodii suggested by some authors is not confirmed by the textological parallels either. The loci communes between the two works result from the influence of other, later Cyrillo-Methodian sources. It is possible that the compiler of Assumption of Cyril hadn’t known the text of Vita Methodii, at least he never used it. One of the reasons may be rooted in the fact that Vita Methodii was not as widely spread as Vita Cyrilli; moreover, no South-Slavic copies of this work have survived. The text of Assumption of Cyril bears closest similarities to its contemporaneous Assumption of Methodius, to which it is connected by numerous and close textological parallels. The fragment in BAS23 features the authentic text of Assumption of Cyril where the praise to the Bulgarian Orthodox Kingdom is preserved in the same form as it is found in two other works of the Tarnovo pre-Euthymian school: in the Life of Patriarch Joachim I and in Assumption of Methodius. The distinctive features of the work lead to the conclusion that the creation of the text of Assumption of Cyril should be related to the period of the restoration of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and the rise of the Bulgarian Patriarchate in 1235, as part of the Tarnovo hagiographical cycle in praise of Bulgarian saints. Especially important are the copies of Moldovan origin of Assumption of Cyril, which account for half of the extant copies. There the praise to the Bulgarian Orthodox Kingdom has been reworked into a blessing to all orthodox kingdoms. The earliest witness of this textual tradition is preserved in the Collection of Gavriil Uric of 1439. It appears that political reasons have been behind the composition of the text, that it has been connected with works of the same period, in line with the same political and religious trend, as an outspoken advocacy of Bulgarian statehood and Orthodoxy. As testified by the copies, the text’s political line was used in its further life. Assumption of Cyril entered Romanian literature with the collections structured according to the Jerusalem Typikon and became one of the emblems of the political and religious identity in Moldova at the turn of the seventeenth century, remaining largely connected with the era of the Moldovan Metropolitan Anastasius Crimca. The book includes an edition of all extant copies: deciphered text and photocopies of the manuscripts.

Author(s): Vladimír Spousta / Language(s): Czech

The second volume of the Musical-Literary Dictionary deals with the Czech composers’ works which relate to literary art in some way. These relations could have the form of inspiration, but they could also be found in the idea, subject, contents or the text of a literary work. The Dictionary includes works of 891 composers reflecting the literary creation of 2203 writers that inspired them. Its contribution to Czech musical lexicographic literature consists in a new approach to the Czech musical production, in the worldwide context as well. In this senseit is new and unique. The Dictionary is intended for specialists, as well as for the general audience interested in music. Music theoreticians and employees of musical archives will appreciate the extensive list of specialist literature.

Author(s): Joanna Piotrowska / Language(s): Russian

The monograph presents a new approach to research surrounding the alter-cultural reception of a writer. The methodological proposals are presented with reference to the reception of Leo Tolstoy. The study focuses on two significant events: his 80th birthday (1908) and his departure from Yasnaya Polyana (1910). A comparative analysis of Polish and foreign publications enabled the author to track the transformations that took place in the way Tolstoy’s image was constructed, and at the same time to better understand the specific nature of press reception mechanisms.

Author(s): Artur Jabłoński / Language(s): Polish

The book analyses and attempts to reconstruct the notion of the Kashubian nation as imagined by Jan Rompski (1913-1969) – writer, national activist and ethnographer. Rompski, founder of the Zrzeszińce political and literary group, envisioned the Kashubian identity as a collection of features from an open set encompassing in particular: territory, language, culture, and civic sense. Intertwined with the discussion of Rompski’s views are modern Kashubian identity discourses that serve to confront his narrative with ways in which Kashubian identity is imagined today.

Anthology of Turkish Science Fiction Stories

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Turkish science fiction dates back to the early years of the twentieth century and serious development has been seen ever since. The writers, who escaped from the darkness of the First World War and took refuge in utopian science fiction, added the excitement created by science and technology to their texts over time. Turkish writers, who followed the science fiction works from the West and made efforts for the development of this genre, produced very qualified works that could compete with their contemporaries at some points. However, due to some historical, social, and economic problems, it was not possible for these works to meet readers in the West. In this anthology, the works of Turkish science fiction writers are brought together for the first time in English. Contemporary science fiction writers have written short stories for this anthology. Hence, the resulting diversity of stories represents a contribution to science fiction literature. An important feature of the anthology is that it includes examples showing how science and technology are perceived philosophically by authors outside of Europe and America. Since literature is an indispensable resource to investigate the equivalent of science fiction, which was born with modernism, in “post-modern” societies. This anthology of Turkish science fiction will be an important Non-Western SF source for both science fiction readers and researchers.

What images of the post-1989 era does literature create? How do the contemporary works interpret the recent socialist past? Does literature participate in the formation of the perceptions and the memory of the transition? The above issues are also examined in a broader interdisciplinary perspective, in relation to the media, theatre, cinema, and cultural anthropology.

English for a Successful Career: A Study of the ESP Needs of Students of Economics and Socio-Political Studies

Author(s): Albena Stefanova,Denitsa Bozeva / Language(s): English

The monograph presents a study of the ESP needs of students of economics and socio-political studies aimed at course optimisation. The research includes two stages with the pilot one having finished in June 2021 and involving the students at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) in Bulgaria as well as the subject, and ESP lecturers at UNWE. The second stage included students from universities with the profile of UNWE in Bulgaria and worldwide (April-October 2021). Altogether, 1106 students from seven Bulgarian and twelve foreign HEIs took part in the survey along with thirty-two faculty members who teach English, subject or both. The impressive number of respondents allowed for an in-depth and insightful research. The results from the study were analysed in detail, which led to the development of comprehensive recommendations that could be used in order to optimise course parameters and hence design more effective and engaging ESP courses for students of economics and socio-political studies. Even though the examination of the issue was related to the educational process at a particular university, there are implications for all academic institutions worldwide whose mission is to offer high-quality programmes and provide a learning-enhanced environment.

Hodnocení variabilních mechanismů hlasu, jazyka a řeči v kontextu logopedického a neurovývojového bádání

Author(s): Kateřina Vitásková,Jana Mironova Tabachová,Lucie Nohová / Language(s): Czech

"The collective monograph is focused on the investigation of selected physiological and pathological mechanisms of voice, language and speech in the context of logopedic (speech language therapy), special edcuational and neurodevelopmental, psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic research. These are twelve selected areas of specifics and deviations of communication, including respiration, phonation and resonance, articulation, intelligibility and understanding of speech, phatic functions, lexia and pragmatics of communication, both in the context of their development and acquired and so-called symptomatic (secondary) speech disorders. Individual sub-areas were examined with a primary emphasis on speech therapy and special pedagogical diagnostics and therapy using a mixed methodological research design, using special instrumental, test, registration and specific therapeutic methods, some of which will be adapted or newly created during the project. The publication has a transdisciplinary intersectoral character – it covers both the educational and clinical and counselling environment, uses newly adapted experimental and diagnostic methods and therapeutic materials and extends the current state of knowledge in the field of determinants of development and communication disorders in its individually and situationally variable form. The presented research responds to the long-term pandemic situation, and thus to changes in the assessment of changes and deviations in communication in the context of prevention and impacts of COVID-19, including innovated research methods and its enrichment with a combination of face-to-face field and distance electronic formats."
