Interkulturní prózy a obraz kulturního šoku v současné české literatuře

Interkulturní prózy a obraz kulturního šoku v současné české literatuře

Author(s): Marek Lollok / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2024

The paper explores the topic of intercultural prose as a highly productive and differentiated stream of contemporary Czech literature. Their authors draw inspiration mainly from their own biographies, emphasizing various sub-themes in different genre modifications. The common base of these works is some kind of confrontation of different cultures, mostly represented by the subjective perspective of a particular character, staying often “on the verge”, taking the role of an observer or outsider. A frequent motif is the phenomenon of culture shock in its various stages and forms, as a natural reaction to encountering another/different/foreign culture. In 2022, several intercultural prose novels were published; in our paper we contextualize and characterize the novels Jsem jejich bůh by Josef Pánek and Jolka by Jana Guljuškina, which we consider to be the most significant in the field.

Undergroundová sbírka Filipa Klegy?

Undergroundová sbírka Filipa Klegy?

Author(s): Jakub Chrobák / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2024

The study analyses F. Klega‘s collection Andrstán in comparative relations not only to the Czech literary underground, but also asks to what extent the conceptual vocabulary that accompanies the collection, especially the notions of the Czech underground and "embarrassing poetry", is thought about in the texts that in some way reciprocate it. It also asks to what extent the freedom in the use of these terms is linked to the situation of literary criticism within the academically "measured" literary science.

Prózy roku 2022. Války, lágry, bezpráví aneb Dějiny 20. století jako neutichající inspirační zdroj

Prózy roku 2022. Války, lágry, bezpráví aneb Dějiny 20. století jako neutichající inspirační zdroj

Author(s): Alena Šidáková Fialová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2024

The year 2022 saw the continuation of a trend in Czech literature, with several prose works exploring the traumatic events of the 20th century. This trend, initiated in the new millennium by authors like Hana Andronikova and Kateřina Tučková, focuses on the most traumatic points in Czech history, such as the German occupation, the Holocaust, and the post-war expulsion. The second decade of the 21st century marked a significant rise in female authors writing multi-generational family sagas with strong female protagonists. Recent years have also seen an increase in prose set during the normalization period of the 1970s and 1980s. The most notable book of 2022 was "Bílá Voda" by Kateřina Tučková, which won the State Prize for Literature despite controversy. Other significant works include Miloš Doležal's "1945: Léto běsů" and Karin Lednická's "Životice," both of which blend factual and fictional elements. The trend of integrating historical documents and real-life inspirations into fiction continues to be popular, enhancing the educational value of mainstream literature.

Záhadný pan Bigstain a „cenopauza“ Ceny Miloslava Švandrlíka

Záhadný pan Bigstain a „cenopauza“ Ceny Miloslava Švandrlíka

Author(s): Vladimír Novotný / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2024

In 2012, under the auspices of the Writers’ Association, the Prize for Humorous Literature was established, named after the popular representative of this genre, Miloslav Švandrlík (1932–2009). Initially, it was awarded annually, but its rules and especially the composition of the individual juries have changed. Eventually, there was even a "price pause", with the year relating to books published in 2021 being initially omitted and then merged with the following year. The consequences of this “price pause” are summarised in a framework with reference to the books by the pseudonymous Sigi Bigstain, who created a humorous trilogy about the fate of the contemporary Švejk, representing the grandson of the good soldier, from the pen of Jaroslav Hašek.

The study tries to show how the schizophrenic behavior of the Czech phi-marker -s both as a C-2 clitic (Ty-s četl // Ty jsi četl “You’ve read”) and a V-clitic (Ty četl-s // *Ty četl jsi “You’ve read”) could be derived within the theoretical framework of the phi-feature geometric analysis.

Author(s): Luboš Veselý / Language(s): Czech Issue: 2/2024

There are two interpretations of the relationship between the preposition and the form of the noun: 1) the preposition requires a complement to which it assigns a case; 2) the preposition does not control the case and specifies its semantics. The task of the article is to try to say whether one of the concepts is more accurate.

Vzpomínková vyprávění jako zdroj společenské odolnosti

Vzpomínková vyprávění jako zdroj společenské odolnosti

Author(s): Tereza Kozlová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 2/2024

The project "Vzpomínková vyprávění jako zdroj společenské odolnosti," led by the Dialectological Department of the Institute of the Czech Language, focuses on the theme of crisis in the narratives and language of the oldest generation. Initiated in 2022, the project narrowed its focus to war and wartime crises due to events in Ukraine. It collects and transcribes senior citizens' narratives, using both existing archives and new recordings from field research. The project also produces podcasts, a dictionary of military slang, and educational materials for teachers. An interdisciplinary workshop held in Brno in October 2024 discussed topics like war conflicts, political pressure, and crisis reflection in language and literature. The project aims to maximize practical use of its outputs, contributing to both academic research and public education. The collected testimonies are expected to serve as a basis for future scholarly and popular outputs.

Das Panorama der Weimarer Republik im Roman ,,Drei Kameraden'' von Erich Maria Remarque

Author(s): Alexandra Nicolaescu / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2021

The novel ''Drei Kameraden'' (Three Comrades) by Erich Maria Remarque could be considered as the third and last volume of a trilogy which also includes ''Im Westen nichts Neues'' (All Quiet on the Western Front) and ''Der Weg zurück'' (The Road Back). However, because of the political changes in Germany in the 1930s, the book was published much later than originally planned and for this reason neither readers, nor literary critics acknowledged the book as part of the trilogy at that point in time. Nevertheless, in all three novels the author discusses the problem of the so-called Lost Generation and depicts the collective psychological state of young men, who inherited values that were no longer relevant in a post war world. Erich Maria Remarque depicts the reality of The Weimar Republic revealing the financial and social crisis that dominated everyday life. He raises questions about surviving in a post war era, and it is therefore that ''Drei Kameraden'' can be interpreted as a literary chronicle of those troubled times in German history.

Der Großstadtroman der Weimarer Republik: Die Bedeutung der sinnlichen Wahrnehmung in Hans Falladas Roman ,,Wolf unter Wölfen'' (1937)

Author(s): Lúcia Bentes / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2021

The aim of this paper is to examine sensory spaces and how social unrest can be caused and strengthened through odours, sounds, and looks. The city of Berlin and the bodies of the characters Wolfgang Pagel, Petra Ledig, and Joachim von Prackwitz-Neulohe during the Weimar Republic, described in the novel ''Wolf unter Wölfen'' (1937) by Hans Fallada, are examples of sensory spaces. The analysis focuses on how life and behaviour of these three characters are influenced by different sensorial perceptions and how their physical and emotional relationships with themselves and their relationships with the other characters and with the city develop through their sensory relationship to the world. Ultimately, the paper aims at showing that the Weimar Republic could be considered as an intervening period in which unpleasant smells, noises and looks arise and accumulate. This contributes to a greater understanding of the social and political unrest during the Weimar Republic.

Literarischer Antisemitismus in Fritz Namenhauers ,,Untergang''

Author(s): Fabian Wilhelmi / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2021

Antisemitism was a widespread phenomenon in the society of the Weimar Republic. This had an impact on literary texts. Based on the analysis of specific aspects of Fritz Namenhauersʼs historical fiction novel ''Untergang'', this paper will show how antisemitism is effective in literary texts. The paper offers at first a short overview of how antijudaistic and antisemitic elements are presented in historical fiction about the First Roman-Jewish War. The analysis then focuses on the role of the Essenes and early Christianity as well as on the literary representation of the end of the war. It concludes with an evaluation of how antisemitism operates in the text.

„Die Welt ist nicht Ihr Zirkus.“ Bertolt Brechts „Baal“(1922) als Abgesang auf den Ästhetizismus

Author(s): Robert Hermann / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2021

The article focuses on the critical depiction of Aestheticism in the 1922 version of Bertolt Brecht’s play ''Baal''. While many scholars argue that Brecht’s 1919 version is to be preferred due to its socio-critical and more ambivalent design, I put forward the hypothesis that the 1922 revision stands out by dismissing a decadent form of Aestheticism as well as the prototypical artist that goes along with it. After a brief introduction concerning the production history of the play, I will define the notions of Aestheticism and decadent Aestheticism to provide a foundation for the following in-depth analysis of the text. The analysis will be concluded by a comparison to the 1919 version of the play. My aim is to point out the important role that the 1922 variant of ''Baal'' played for the artistic development of the young Brecht and to thus highlight the significance of this rather neglected version both for Brecht’s oeuvre and for the ambivalent – and often competing – artistic trends of the Weimar Republic.

Männlichkeitskonstruktionen in Ernst Tollers Dramen „Der deutsche Hinkemann” (1923) und „Der entfesselte Wotan” (1923)

Author(s): Anna Sator / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2021

The social changes that took place throughout the Weimar Republic Era affected gender roles in their depth – not only the image of the New Woman arose, but at the same time the traditional image of the heroic soldier was questioned. New images of a more sensual masculinity coexisted with the old ones. Dramatic texts and theatre in particular were and are predestined spaces to try out new forms of gender roles and characters. For instance, Ernst Toller’s ''Hinkemann'' is one of the first plays to address the effects of disability caused by war on ideas of masculinity as well as individual fates. Alongside this tragic illustration of the effects of missing representation and failing identification with the hegemonic idea of masculinity Toller wrote a comedy on the same hegemonic masculinity of the war hero in the same year. In ''Der entfesselte Wotan'' an unsuccessful hairdresser manages to gain power through founding an emigration society and staging himself as the messianic leader of this company. The analysis of the two dramatic texts points out that fictional texts are an important mirror of social change and especially the theatre is the place where new concepts of gender are staged and discussed.

Tier- und Naturwelt als Projektionen eines idealisierten Selbst bei Franz Marc und Gottfried Benn

Author(s): Raluca Rădulescu / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2021

The article aims to explore the way in which the aesthetical programme of the German Expressionism proves to be valid both in literature and in the visual arts. Thus, it focuses on two artists – Franz Marc and Gottfried Benn – that have never been compared with one another in an intermedial approach so far. One of the most important themes the Expressionism deals with is the self. By choosing representations of animals and nature as alternatives and symbols of a transfigured, better self in the works of Marc and Benn, the paper explores the interconnectedness between literature and arts in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century along with its aesthetic motivations and strategies.

Усвояване на хоноративната система в езиковия репертоар на японски ученици между 6 и 12 години

Author(s): Anton Andreev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2024

This paper gives some insight into the way native honorifics are acquired by Japanese children of 6 to 12 years old, using the methods of a semi structured interview and a language task. Children this young use a different range of language means and in a different way in comparison to adults. Most common, unsurprisingly, are the addressive (listener-oriented) honorifics, which are usually found at the start of an interaction, in standard formulae and in direct appeals to the addressee. This might be because the addressee is a tangible participant in the communication, while topic-oriented forms need a more subtle understanding of the relations within the triad speaker-addressee- topic. The use of addressive forms does not show a perceptible age difference, perhaps because they are acquired earlier than the researched age range but mastered later. On the other hand, topic-oriented forms show an age difference, which implies that grammatical acquisition happens exactly in the researched age, with perception preceding production. The obviously existing difference in the age of acquisition between addressee- oriented and topic-oriented honorifics implies their relative systemic independence.
