The article deals with the opinions of Tatar theologists who were the representatives of the so-called Jadidism – a reformatory movement of Tatar Muslims that took place in the 19th and early 20th centuries – in relation to the Prophet Muhammad’s saying about the schism in his community and the afterlife salvation of only one of its groups. The analysis is based on the theological works of four prominent Tatar scholars of Islam: A. Kursavi, Sh. Marjani, R. Fakhretdinov, and M. Bigiev. These works are studied in chronological order to reveal the evolution of the views concerning the entire Muslim reformatory movement among the Tatars in general. In addition, the question as to whether the Tatar theological heritage can foster tolerance among modern Muslims is considered.

The current article is devoted to a not so widely known in the specialized Bulgarian ethnological literature demonic creature, mostly known in two villages in Northwestern Bulgaria (Chiprovtsi and Zhelezna) and called brobnyacha. The lexeme brobnyacha can only be found in one official Bulgarian language dictionary – the one published in 1908 by N. Gerov. When trying to position the brobnyacha in the Bulgarian and South Balkan folklore mythological pantheon it turns out to be a combined image of different supernatural demonic creatures’ characteristics – vampir – vampire, samodiva – fairy, karakondzhul etc, but without enough common ground with any of them (in terms of chronotopic positioning and actual actions). It is also impossible to sort the brobnyacha as one of the well-known types of witch (magyosnitsa, mamnitsa, bayachka, znaharka, veshtica) among the same regions of Orthodox population. However, the comparative analysis made points to similarities and allows for analogies with the tragically known ‘witch hunting’ in Central and Western Europe. There are also many similarities to witches from the classical fiction literature. In the search of an acceptable explanation, the hypothesis is presented that after the Chiprovtsi uprising in 1688, part of the refugees who at first settle in lands controlled by the Hapsburgs at that time could have become witnesses to ‘belated’ trials against witches in the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century. Since the fate of many of those refugees and their descendants remains unknown, it is logical to conclude that some of them returned to Chiprovtsi and memories of the witch trials have been transformed in the image of the brobnyacha. According to some of the informants the brobnyacha of Chiprovtsi vomits the blood drunk – the same actions is to be seen by the so-called striga of the mountains in Northern Albania. This does not seem to be coincidental and, if the theory about an Albanian presence in the described area of the Chiprovtsi region before 1688 is accepted, which can be confirmed also through the recording of typical Albanian given names in the Ottoman Empire’s tax registers from the region.

The abolition of the Varaždin Generalate in 1871 represented a major turning point in the development of Bjelovar and its wider area. Within the process of integration in the system of Croatia as civil state, a new administrative and territorial organisation was introduced; thereby, the military territorial organisation of the Varaždin Generalate was abolished, and the Bjelovar County was formed in that territory with the seat in Bjelovar, being the eighth county in the territory of the Kingdom of Croatia. The formation of the Bjelovar County in 1871 represented the beginning of the modern administrative and territorial county organisation of the Bjelovar area, which – despite the fifty-year long period of abolition (1922-1992) – remained maintained up to the present. After the Republic of Croatia had gained its independence and the Bjelovar-Bilogora County had been formed, the tradition of the county organisation, which had – in that area – in all times represented one of the most important levers of nation-building conscience, was restored. In the 136-year long history of the administrative and territorial county organisation of the Bjelovar area, several periods are to be distinguished: 1. Bjelovar County 1871-1874 – transitional period between the abolition of the Varaždin Generalate and the passing of the first Political Administration Organisation Act; 2. Bjelovar County 1874-1886 – territorial division of the County into sub-county units and political municipalities; 3. Bjelovar-Križevci County 1886-1922 (1924) – period between the merging of the Bjelovar County and the Križevci County and the abolition of the county organisation 1922-1924; 4. Bjelovar-Bilogora County – period since 1992. Regardless of the above-described changes concerning the spatial aspect, the internal territorial organisation and the political administration, which had been in force in the Bjelovar County area for the last 136 years, its administrative and territorial organisation always managed to unite the elements of modern regionalisation with the century-long experience in county organising in the Croatian territory. Thus, the county history in the Bjelovar area remains a credible witness to the operation of the Croatian state and its organisation throughout various historical epochs.

In Transylvania the same attempts to develop modern political ideas and a national political identity is summarized by the author in the context of the efforts of the majoritary Romanians to achieve equal political and civil rights which were denied to them by the ruler class under the domination of the Austrian Empire and, since 1867, by the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

This paper aims to analyse a document containing a description of the costumes, footwear, and accessories from Tran administrative region (okrazhie) in 1888. Duringthis period, the region included three separate districts (okolii): Tran, Tsaribrod, andBreznik. The aforementioned description was required by Bulgaria’s Ministry ofInternal Affairs. The document was signed by the vice secretary of the governor of theTran region who summarized the descriptions sent by the administrators of the threedistricts mentioned. Albeit written ten years after the liberation of Bulgaria from theOttoman rule, when there was no unified standard for the administrative register ofthe literary language, and the orthographical rules varied in the influential grammarsof that time, the document was written in a well-balanced style combining local wordsdenoting clothes, as well as lexemes and forms considered by the administrator to bewidespread and literary ones. Outside the clothing terminology, he did not use locallexis and forms. In addition, he tried to consistently follow the orthographic ruleshe knew using the historical letters ѫ, ѣ, ъ, and ь according to the etymology. Thevariation which occurs in the manner of designation of the definite article reflects thevariation of the orthographic rules at the time being.The account on the female and male costumes witness the transition fromlinen and hemp underclothes to cotton ones, and from the rich embroidery of thefemale costume to ornaments made of lace and stripes. New elements of the costumecertifying for a tendency towards alafranga style (European clothes) are sack andpaletot, which replaced the fur-coats. Imported materials were used mostly forwomen’s head coverings and summer dresses.

The Russian Chronograph is one of the most significant chronicles in Russian literature. It has several redactions – the First from 1512, the Basic from 1617 and the West Russian from the middle of the 16th century. Each of the variants contains information about Bulgarian history from the settlement of the Proto-Bulgarians in the Danube River area until the death of Tsar Mihail III Shishman. The West Russian version differs because of the distinct sources used in its compilation. This peculiarity is also noticed in the evidence on Bulgarian history, which has not yet been the subject of independent research.

Nowadays in Istanbul, Turkey, there is a Bulgarian colony, which was created after the Second Balkan War and the First World War. It was not related to the Bulgarians in Constantinople from the times of the Bulgarian National Revival, but through the Foundation of Bulgarian Orthodox Churches in Istanbul as established, it was their legal successor. The Foundation was also the formal owner of that part of the Bulgarian exarchal properties in Turkey which the Turkish State returned. Lifting the schism was an act of international and internal political importance. This act put an end to the use of the Exarchy as a mean to unite all the Bulgarians within the borders of a new Bulgaria according to the Treaty of San Stefano. In essence, this was a retreat from the national ideal. The conditions for lifting the schism, the closing of the Exarchal Vicegerency and the unresolved status of the Bulgarian Church Community deprived the Bulgarians in the Republic of Turkey of Bulgarian representation on church affairs and predetermined their remaining within the diocese of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. This issue has consequences even nowadays.

В допълнение, се представя и мястото на провеждане – манастирът „Света Марина“ край село Туминец. Свидетелствата, доказващи колко забележимо и значител¬но място заема той в народната вяра, се откриват в легенди, сънища и истории за него. Статията се базира основно на теренни етнографски материали, събрани в или в близост до селата Туминец и Зрноско през юли и октомври 2017 г. Ключови изводи относно положението на населението там са: – местните се чувстват обединени в малцинствената си роля и смятат традицията да се празнува Света Марина за един от начините да изразят своята принадлежност;– вярата в светицата остава силна, като същевременно в практи¬ките личи съвременният подход да се обедини религиозното честване с добавяне на множество елементи, типични за селски събор.

Five international expedition of the project “Cave research of the Holy Mountain Athos – Greece” took place in 2016 and 2017. This phase of the project was organized by the Bulgarian Caving Society (BCS). The explorations were focused in the surroundings of Bulgarian Orthodox Monastery „St. Georgi Zograph“. 46 natural and artificial caves with total length were explored and surveyed. 32 of them were artificial. From a functional point of view, artificial caves are divided into 4 categories: Water collection galleries Kariz, Ganats; Drainage channels; Fountains with tanks attached to them behind water; Tanks. The work analyses the construction of the underground structures. Description of the most important of them is given.

Seven generations leave their fingerprints on each of us according to a number of genetics specialists. Sooner or later, every person asks, “Who am I? Where and where do I go?” We have personal close contact at best with 2–3 generations of them. The other we know from the stories of our closest relatives, which gradually fade with time. Sometimes, if we’re lucky, we can find more accurate information from the books if our ancestors were famous people or left a scar. Most are in oblivion. Today, people know little about their distant relatives, although interest in family roots is growing. In the past, it was a sacred duty for everyone to honor and respect their ancestors and keep their memory. The legacy of seven generations is by father and mother. Further, heredity weakens and does not play a particu¬lar role. It may seem a little like that. But if we consider Fibonacci’s “rab¬bit” task, there are 126 people. They all live in us and carry this ocean of qualities and flaws that defines our lives.Folk Orthodox Christianity in Bulgaria is a product of Bulgarian Orthodox mentality: this is the canonical knowledge that partially alters its form in time under the pressure of extreme external factors but retains its core relatively unchanged. It has indirect expression in all folk forms while the direct one is in the Christian prayer, rituals, and different beliefs. An interesting manifestation of folk Orthodoxy in the Orthodox temples of the town of Samokov is the practice that could hardly be defined as “canonical” or “non-canonical”: in the chairs, which are also called the thrones in the churches, are placed paper plates with names of parishioners. These are people who paid a certain amount of money to the temple so that the church board put their names and they could use these chairs during the liturgy: they stayed each in front of his/her chair and sit down when it was allowed to sit. It was considered to be especially prestigious to have a throne (chair) in the temple and the deprivation of this privilege was regarded as a major insult. As a rule, people who took care of the church, donated money and worked as volunteers had such chairs/ thrones. Name plates are always present in the temple space, so the person symbolically “always attends” the temple and liturgy. The beginning of this practice can be placed after the end of the fifteenth century when bishop thrones were placed in the Orthodox churches. Its ubiquitous dissemination dates back to the second half of the 18th century. The peak was in the 19th century, when after the age of the Tanzimat (1839) began the intensive construction of orthodox churches in the Bulgarian lands. It should be borne in mind that the name plates on the chairs in the churches could play their role only when the literacy among the Bulgarians became widespread in the first half of the 19th century and there was a public that could read the names. The current research is dedicated to Dimitar Yanakiev Biserov – Okoliyata. He is one of the most active Dupnitsa’s revolutionary and clerical apostle of Northern Macedonia until the Liberation. A fighter for spiritual freedom, a teacher, a poet, a translator, a clergyman, a correspondent a founder of Dupnitsa Lyceum Zora – these are the actions of this great but slightly known Dupnitsa’s man of letters. He is born around 1830 in Dupnitsa town and died from tuberculosis in 1886. He attended the town cell’s schools and Rila monastery school. However, he educated himself throughout his entire life and became one of the most erudite people for his time. Gradually he changed the Church Slavonic books and intro¬duced grammar, geography, history. He is also an author of hand written textbooks. He even took part in Teachers’ Diocesan Congregation held in the town of Samokov in 1847. Dimitar Biserov is a disciple of Hristaki Pavlovich in the fight against the use of Turkish words in the spoken Bulgarian language and writing. He is the author of first Turkish-Bulgarian dictionary before the Liberation. Eager to learn and very active he corresponded with Stefan Verkovich, P. R. Slaveykov and other Bulgarian men of learning. His works were published in several newspapers and magazines issues and they show his versatile interests. He worked in cooperation with the periodical magazine of Bulgarian book Organization in Braila and promulgated folk songs, sayings, riddles, proverbs gathered from Dupnitsa region. He participated in the struggle for church independence by writing his enthusiastic poem “Reshenieto na Bulgarskia tsarkoven vapros”, published in the Constantinople’s magazine “Chitalishte” on 1st June, 1871. Tihomir Medzhidiev published for the first time the original manuscript of the poem in his book “Dupnitsa –Christianity, Islam, Judaism”. The history of Dupnitsa lyceum Zora is related to Dimitar Biserov. The lyceum founded in 1858 claims to be the fourth lyceum in Bulgarian lands. Born in humble circumstances, Dimitar Biserov gives his significant contribution for social and cultural uplift. In his personality and achieve¬ments we may recognize the typical features of Bulgarian Renaissance intelligence and its moral image.

Great number of sacral objects from the Renaissance period in the northeastern part of Rеpublic of North Macedonia contain work from the opus of the Samokov zographs. Work of one of the representatives of the second generation of Samokov masters, Dimitar Hristov, was recognized in the objects from the renaissance period in Kochani according to its stylistic features. The throne icons in the churches in the villages of Orizari, Zrnovci, and Spanchevo, as well as in the church of St. Georgi in Kochani are being interpreted as his work. His successors mark the second half of the XIX century sacred creation. We will generally focus on the work of the son Zakhariy Dospevski Samokovets. Several works in the churches in the villages of Beli, Nivichani and Pantelej in the area of Kochani, dated from 1872 to 1876, are marked with his signature. The little church “The Birth of the Mother of God” in the monastery St. Pantelejmon in the village of Pantelej is com-pletely his accomplishment. The utilization of a GIS (Geographical Information System) permits the highlighting of urban strategies seen through textual fonts in early modern Lyons. The town council applied a long-lasting micro-urbanism aiming to improve traffic, to enlarge squares and to control the spatial usage. However, popular culture remained very reluctant, defending two kinds of appropriation. Streets and squares were considered a normal extension of professional premises, and militia units often came into conflict over shared parade grounds.

Narvik, a Swedish Norwegian Border Town

This article gives an insight into the industrialization and colonization processes of northern Scandinavia. Urbanization due to industrialization is a vital part of the perspective, and brings us into an industrial mega system in Swedish Lapland in the late nineteenth century based on iron ore export. It was to be connected to the industrial centre of Europe, especially the Ruhrgebiet of Germany, and paved the way for a new kind of urban development in peripheral Europe – the industrial network town. The history and foundation of the Norwegian harbour town Narvik is vital for gaining insight into this mega system. By studying Narvik we can envisage particularities of, and similarities and differences between Norway and Sweden when it comes to their urban economic foundations, urban development/planning regimes, and the relations between the municipalities, the modern nation states and the dominating companies. Even the development of a uniquely Scandinavian identity connected with the labour movement and the development of a post-war social democrat order visibly results from the new industries. Thus the common Swedish-Norwegian figure of the rallar – something like navvy or construction worker – has a significant place in this study, and the use of the figure in addition to later processes of memory creation, both within the Norwegian and Swedish labour movements, is addressed.
