Some research difficulties of studying language learners’ beliefs

Some research difficulties of studying language learners’ beliefs

Author(s): Enikő Biró / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2015

Keywords: language learners’s beliefs; definition; individual differences; qualitative research; quantitative research.

Teaching languages involves at least two parties: the language learner and the language teacher. Teachers should be aware of the fact that language learners come to class with preconceived notions about how to learn languages, best strategies, worst techniques etc. These notions are learners’ beliefs about the nature of language learning, about the language itself and about the language learner’s abilities. These beliefs have impact on learners’ performance in the class, therefore they need to be thoroughly investigated. Researchers are increasingly interested in the study of these beliefs. However, more and more problems arise as the research field broadens. This present paper tries to list the most important and frequent problems a researcher meets during his or her studies on language learners’ beliefs. Defining beliefs, using the most appropriate reasearch tool, classifying the different beliefs, dealing with individual differences of language learners present difficult issues and hinder the fruitful results of a research. Collecting the most important issues met during research helps clarifying the research problems.

Keywords: literary journalism; New Journalism; narrative techniques; the novel; literary realism; the fiction-nonfiction divide

What do nonfictional journalism and the fictional novelistic tradition have in common? And which one can be said to emulate the other? Is journalism closer to representing reality than the “twice-removed”, fictional copy of it is? Such questions are addressed by the American school of “neo-journalists” in an attempt to challenge contemporary forms of literary representation and to justify the existence and advantages presented by a mode of factual reporting that shares its rhetorical devices and narrative techniques with the most enduring fictional genre, the novel.

Languages in Contact Anglicisms and Dynamic Romanian

Author(s): Maria-Zoica Eugenia Balaban / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2015

Keywords: languages in contact; anglicisms; bilingualism; influence; interference; loan word; lingua franca; necessary borrowings; luxury borrowings.

One of the most interesting phenomena of the linguistic research is the dynamics of linguistic systems. The present dynamics in the Romanian vocabulary has been studied from different perspectives. Therefore, our paper aims to contribute to the presentation of the main methods of vocabulary enrichment, but focusing on the derivation process. The great amount of used foreign terms proves that Romanian is a flexible and “welcoming” language. Our main reason for choosing this topic is the personal interest in studying the language phenomena. Lexical innovations represent a very complex phenomenon that hasn’t been fully studied. Therefore, at the present moment there are just a few studies that provide data on this subject.

Argument for “Glocalization”: Japan for the World in the Japanese Gastronomical Advertisement

Author(s): Rodica Frentiu / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2015

Keywords: Glocalization; gastronomical advertising discourse; cultural identity; “syncretic” semiosis.

The present study aims to emphasize how the rhetoric of the gastronomical advertisement can reveal the meaning of Japanese cultural identity in the context of “glocalization”. Using graphical and cinematographic presentation, the gastronomical advertisements offered by Wa Raku magazine (2008) or by the documentary film Japan: Fascinating Diversity (2012), on which the present analysis establishes its arguments, is seductive. Not only does it use a method of “syncretic” semiosis to offer access to the “philosophy” of Japanese cuisine, which is based on the natural (rawness, freshness), but also glimpses how Japanese culinary science turns into a cultural “uninterrupted text” which “writes” itself before the eyes of the consumers. At the beginning of a century that highlights globalization on the one hand and exacerbation of identity on the other, Japan seems to have instilled, in the definition of its own cultural identity, the characteristic of hospitality as only cuisine can comprise. By means of the gastronomical advertising discourse, Japan invites its guests to symbolic communication, turning them into equals with whom it shares its joys and pleasures, for a better mutual understanding.

Similarities and Diferences between English and German – A Lexical Approach

Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen Englisch und Deutsch – Ein lexikalischer Ansatz

Author(s): Antonia-Izabella Kelemen / Language(s): German / Issue: 2/2015

Keywords: mothertongue; vocabulary; loanwords; pronounciation; wordroots; endings; interference; avoiding mistakes; lexemes.

Foreign languages should be taught and be learned in a way not isolated from each other as some are related and built on each other. Communication skills of learners is constantly expanding. Foreign language learning in the world today - and in particular with regard to European integration – is a lifelong task, where there are mainly two significant aspects for the development of tertiary language didactics –the increase of language awareness and the comparison of the language systems of the 1st foreign language with the 2nd foreign language. English and German are close „relatives”, belonging to the same Germanic language family. That means that many linguistic elements in both languages have easily recognizable equivalents: In the field of vocabulary there are more than 600 „common” words to be found in the elementary experience areas where one can easily tap into their meaning. It is important for any learner to acknowledge the lexical system in order to find the similarities or differences between these two.
