Upowszechnianie wyników badań naukowych w międzynarodowych bazach danych. Analiza bibliometryczna na przykładzie nauk technicznych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem elektrotechniki

Author(s): Renata Frączek / Language(s): English,Polish

Keywords: research; International Databases; Bibliometric Analysis; Electrotechnics; Technical Sciences

The issues of bibliometrics, scientometrics, informetrics and webometrics have an important place among research subject undertaken by Polish and foreign scholars. Initially, these notions were used only by researchers in the fields of library science, scientometricsand information science. However, at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, quantitativemethods became a fundamental tool for evaluation of, among others, sources of academiccommunication, academic research, research and academic centers. One of the elements ofthe evaluation is a quantitative analysis of academic publications in databases with international access. It is of particular importance in the case of technical sciences. This work is an attempt at a quantitative analysis of publications by Polish authors (affiliated to Polishtechnical universities) and Polish journals on electrotechnics in international databases. Thecontents are organized into four chapters with an introduction, conclusions, bibliography, name index and a list of figures and illustrations. Chapters one and two are devoted totheoretical issues, whereas chapters three and four – to practical issues. In the first chapter, selected issues concerning quantitative methods were presented, including an analysis of literature and a discussion over terminology carried out in book publications and journals. Moreover, selected examples of research conducted with the use of quantitative methods (including rankings and scientific reports) were discussed in this chapter). In chapter two, sources of information on academic publications, their origins and development (from bibliographic bases to citation indexes) were presented. A separate subchapter was devoted to databases of academic publications created by libraries of technical universities, and to indicators in the assessment of academic publications. Chapter three deals with electrotechnics as a field of science. An analysis was conducted with regard to the place of electrotechnics in science classifications based on selected examples, and the development of the teaching of electrotechnics at university level was shown. In this chapter, early and contemporary Polish journals on electrotechnics were presented, including journals published by technical universities themselves. Chapter four contains the results of an analysis of international databases (Scopus, WoS, CC), focusing on the representation of Polish journals, including their citations, and publications of authors with affiliation to Polish technical universities. Final conclusions of research and analyses have brought an answer to questions raised with regard to the assessment of representation in international databases of publications by Polish authors affiliated to Polish technical universities (in its various aspects, e.g., a publication type, language of publication, publication dynamics taking into account years of publications, cooperation with representatives of other European and non-European countries), and of Polish journals.

The theory of bibliography in the Second Polish Republic

Teoria bibliografii w II Rzeczypospolitej

Author(s): Agnieszka Gołda / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: bibliography; history of bibliography; theory of bibliography; Second Polish Republic

The dissertation entitled The theory of bibliography in the Second Polish Republic provides information on the phenomenon that occurs during the time of the formation of the theoretical basis of bibliography. The work has been aimed at describing the evolution of the theory of the discipline of bibliography. Therefore, the elements of knowledge about bibliography were searched in the works of the first Polish bibliographers to focus on the influence of European trends on the crystallization of the theoretical bibliographical thought and the creation of the centres providing schooling in this discipline in the 19th century in the territory of the Republic of Poland (Krzemieniec, Kraków, Warsaw, Vilnius). It has been pointed out the potentiality of the flourishing of the theory of bibliography in the interwar period, and the contribution of the Bibliographic Institute of the National Library and the Association of Polish Librarians (including congresses of librarians) to the discourse on the subject. The plan, which actually did notachieve its implementation, for establishing the Polish Bibliographic Society, as well as the lecture activity of the local groups of the Association of Polish Librarians in the field of bibliography have been characterized, and bibliography considered as a subject taught in higher schools, secondary schools and during library courses has been discussed. The subsequent chapters comprise the analysis of the theoretical statements by representatives of Polish science (including, among others, Ludwik Bernacki, Leon Bykowski, Kazimierz Dobrowolski, Adam Łysakowski, Zygmunt Mocarski, Jan Muszkowski, Kazimierz Piekarski, Mieczysław Rulikowski, Stefan Vrtel‑Wierczyński), in which they acknowledged bibliography as a practical and supplementary field of knowledge (however they did not decide whether it was an independent discipline or part of bibliology), and as a research method. What is another issue addressed in the work is the subject of bibliography, its methods (bringing the concept of bibliography closer to critical bibliography and analytical bibliography), relationships with other fields of knowledge (mainly with the history of literature), typologies of bibliographic lists, and the theory of the types of bibliography (general bibliography and special bibliography, i.e. relating to disciplines and issues, region, contents of magazines). In addition, the work presents biographies of a group of theoreticians of bibliography, with special emphasis onto educational centres, subjects of their studies, their professional work and the first domain of their postdoctoral degrees. The final part of the work contains the analysis of citations of theoretical publications from the interwar period in textbooks, manuals and monographs published after 1945, the results of which show that there was little interest in the reception of pre‑war materials.

The modelling of the process of searching for scientific information. Strategies and interactions

Modelowanie procesu wyszukiwania informacji naukowej. Strategie i interakcje

Author(s): Arkadiusz Pulikowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: information searching; information seeking; information behaviour; models; scientific information

The basic object of the considerations which are presented in this work is the proces of searching for scientific information. On the basis of an analysis of a dozen or so existing concepts, the theoretical part presents the proposal of new models of information seeking and searching – models which reflect the behaviour of the modern users of scholarly information. The object of research in the empirical part has to do with the elements of the user’s interface which facilitate interaction at the particular stages of the proces of information retrieval. The research which was conducted bore fruit in the form of the construction of a model which supports the interaction of the user with the system. // In order to fulfil the goals which were set, the theoretical part employs the method of the analysis and criticism of writing, whereas the empirical part employs the method of an analysis of the content (of systems), the benchmarking method and the survey method. // Polish‑language information science reference works do not include publications which discuss the problems of seeking and searching scientific information in a comprehensive manner. The present monograph attempts to fill this gap, at the same time enhancing the present state of knowledge by introducing new themes and refreshing the concepts which became somewhat obsolete in the course of years. // The work is intended above all for specialists – the researchers of the informationbehaviour and the designers of scientific information systems. However, the work may also be successfully used as didactic material for students who pursue various courses of study.

Keywords: EZD; electronic documentation management

The book discusses a difficult process, which is the implementation of electronic document management systems in organization units viewed in the context of nationwide implementation of IT solutions. In scientific literature, increasingly more room is devoted to the designing and implementation of systems, whereas the role of archivists is unfortunately inadequately discussed. Oftentimes, they seem to be overlooked in this important process. It should be reminded that in many issues relating to documentation management, the knowledge of archivists would allow avoidance of numerous problems occurring in practice. The present book fills in this gap as it focuses on the experiences of archivists and their role in the process of implementation of documentation electronic management systems. The book offers a broad view of the operation of archives. It is addressed to archivists and other employees of organization units, including administrators and students. It provides a practical explanation of EDM implementation processes, which makes it a valuable source of knowledge for all those who are currently faced with this problem.

The Palimpsest. Places and Spaces

Palimpsest. Miejsca i przestrzenie

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: palimpsest; place;space;

In the present volume, which we present to the readers, the metaphor of the palimpsest is an interpretational key opening the reflection upon the categories of place and space in literature and culture. Places, which bear imprints of the subsequent inscriptions of the human history, refer to meanings that are both clear and hidden, like palimpsests. The palimpsest awakens curiosity in a different way than a page that has been inscribed once. It seemingly conceals, for that which is beneath (even if it is blurred or partly scratched) – is diaphanous. The more illegible it is, the more intriguing, open, potential it becomes. The palimpsest sensitises to the inconspicuous and emphasises its importance. Elżbieta Dutka (one of the authors of the present volume) writes: “the metaphor of the obliterated, multi-layered text, where one layer shines through another one, seems to be paradoxical in the studies on space: yet it is irreplaceable (often referred to) and insufficient (criticised and refuted) at the same time.” The authors of the subsequent sketches seem to support this thesis and thus search for meanings of place and space in various cultural phenomena.

Polish book reportage. Changes and adaptations

Polski reportaż książkowy. Przemiany i adaptacje

Author(s): Katarzyna Frukacz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Polish book reportage; book market; adaptation; media convergence; aggregateness; genre and media hybrids; reportage-as-a-project

The monograph provides an analysis of the main factors determining the market- based and aesthetic status of old and contemporary Polish book reportage. The reflection aims at discussing the origin and the consecutive stages of the development of this media form in Poland, from the second half of the 19th century to contemporary times. One of the most significant issues discussed in the dissertation refers to the current generic transformation of these non-fiction books, as well as their new promotion and distribution policies in the digital era. Moreover, the objective of the research is to examine possible directions of further evolution of Polish book reportage, resulting from its adaptation to the standards of convergence culture and characteristics of the postmodern age. The dissertation consists of five chapters. The first two present a diachronic reconstruction of the history of reportage books on the national publishing market. Chapter one concerns the period from the partitions of Poland to the political transformation of the country in the 20th century and examines the circumstances that have led to symbiotic relation between the press and book forms of the genre. Furthermore, it describes how book reportages became separated from texts printed in the press after World War II. This issue is further discussed in chapter two, whose overall theme is the situation of Polish book reportages after 1989 (with special emphasis on their entanglement in commercial mass media discourse and their relationship with other forms of artistic expression). The above-mentioned problems also determine the subject of the next two analytic and interpretative parts of the monograph. Chapter three examines the influence of media convergence on the poetics of book reportages at the beginning of the 21st century. Their transformation is presented here as a typology encompassing three strategies of adapting reporters’ prose to digital conditions. These strategies are based on the notions of commercialization, interactivity and subjectivity. Chapter four, which contains an analysis of some chosen publications by Mariusz Szczygieł, Jacek Hugo-Bader and Filip Springer, provides additional details on the adaptation process defined in the previous part of the book. Works by these authors are discussed as examples of two complementary tendencies, compatible with contemporary transformations of the publishing sector. The first tendency concerns creating reportage books that are hybrid texts, while the second one aims at transforming reportage stories into intermedia and transmedia projects. Both processes are associated with the aggregateness category adopted for discussion purposes and considered as a formal determinant of recent Polish book reportages. The aggregateness concept also makes up the leitmotif of the last chapter, which provides the final assessment of formerly discussed phenomena. The aggregateness is examined here as a feature constituting today’s cultural reality, whose fragmentary and accumulative shape results as much from the media convergence’s impact, as from the axiological and aesthetic assumptions of postmodernity. The analysis embedded in this context concerns referential aspects of the contemporary reportage testimonies. In the concluding remarks, the evolution of methods of perceiving reality, resulting in the progressive subjectivity of reporters’ accounts, is recognized as the main source of the changes and adaptations of Polish book reportages mentioned in the title of the monograph.

The Model of a Library Actively Promoting Children’s Books

Model biblioteki aktywnie promującej książkę dziecięcą

Author(s): Marlena Gęborska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: library activity; children's librarianship; libraries in Poland; foreign libraries; cultural activities; library events; children's book; media library; library model

In the years 2000–2015, libraries’ cultural offer for young people seemed particularly interesting, as Polish public libraries were undergoing changes driven by developments and transformation in other domains. The communication system changed, and readers’ interests and needs evolved. The 21st century library cannot merely implement new technologies for acquiring, cataloging, and circulating library collections. First of all, libraries have to provide services essential for contemporary readers, making the library offer more and more attractive. The library should be a meeting place, a venue for upbringing and inspiration. Library events may change stereotypes of this institution and encourage young people to visit the library on a regular basis. Within fifteen years, libraries reached the peak in terms of promoting children’s books; however, continuous efforts are necessary in this area. Increasingly demanding readers of the Z generation prompt librarians to enhance library resources and raise their own competence. This study applies the modelling method to show the activities of libraries in the culture system. The volume ends with a summary of the main findings and proposes a library activity model in the context of the promotion of the cultural offer for children and young adults.

The development of the thought of book science and library science in the light of scientific and professional journals published in Poland (1901–1939)

Rozwój myśli księgoznawczej i bibliotekoznawczej w świetle czasopism naukowych i fachowych wydawanych na terenach ziem polskich (1901–1939)

Author(s): Beata Żołędowska-Król / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: book science; library science; scientific journals; professional magazines

The aim of this paper is to show what role performed journals founded in the years 1901–1939 by book people in the development of book science and library science. The paper presents the functions of continuous publications (in the fields of book science, bibliophily, librarianship and library science) that shaped theoretical thought and research techniques of the evolving disciplines, formed the attitudes of librarians, mediated in sharing experience and modern methods of work organisation in the library, provided necessary information, among others, on possible forms of professional education. The first two chapters set out the conditions in which journals devoted to the book and the library had been established until 1939, present the profiles of the precursors who created the theoretical potential of Polish book science and library science, their views and the most important publishing repertoire, furthermore they outline the publishing and formal characteristics of the book people. In the third chapter, the composition of the examined scientific and professional journals was reconstructed (their structure, types of information) and the results of the content analysis were presented to show the contribution of a given title to the development of theoretical reflection and research trends that were reflected in its pages. The following nine journal titles were analysed: „Bibliotekarz” (Librarian) (1919), „Biuletyn Biblioteki Publicznej m.st. Warszawy” (the Bulletin of the Public Library of the Capital City of Warsaw) (1929-1939), „Exlibris” (1917–1929), „Książka” (Book) (1901–1914, 1922), „Pamiętnik Biblioteki Kórnickiej” (The Diary of the Kórnik Library) (1929–1930), „Przegląd Bibliograficzny” (The Bibliography Review) (1905–1926), „Przegląd Biblioteczny” (The Library Review) (1908–1911 [for the years 1908–1909]), „Przegląd Biblioteczny” (The Library Review) (1927–1939), and „Silva Rerum“ (1925–1939). In the fourth chapter, which serves the role of the summary, a model of bibliology and library science, worked out in the pages of the studied magazines, has been outlined. The chapter comprises the issues concerning bibliology and library science discussed in the journals, their contribution to the development of the methodology and terminology within the discipline of book science and library science and inspirations in the then Polish and foreign scientific works. Subsequently, the research topics that were dealt with in the examined magazines and were continued after 1945 have been presented. The results of the study made it possible to confirm the contribution of the journals in the followings: documenting the development and dissemination of theories, scientific views and results of scientific research within the domains of the book science and library science; learning about the achievements of the world science and the reception of them in Poland; popularising the scientific though among the people working and dealing with the book. The work is intended for specialists in various fields, representing primarily the broadly understood science concerning the book, as well as for press experts, cultural sociologists and researchers dealing with the history of science.
