University towards the cultural change in Poland

University towards the cultural change in Poland

Uniwersytet wobec zmiany kulturowej w Polsce

Author(s): Jolanta Miluska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 14/2013

Keywords: university; cultural change; attitudes towards cultural change

The systemic transformation in Poland has political, economic, demographic, social as well as cultural and psychological character, which states the principles of functioning of individuals, social groups and institutions including universities. The cultural change analyzed in the context of acculturation process means the necessity of adaptation of relatively new culture values: equality, individualism, cultural masculinity and new openess in new situation. There are four possible attitudes towards this process: separation, marginalization, assimilation and integration, which are connected also with university as the institution and social environment. The analysis of these attitudes shows their aspects and consequences. In the situation of cultural change remembering the mission of the University is needed as it states possible, permissible and desirable changes.

The Monograph of Criminal Trial as Conducted in the Towns of Małopolska Region of the Early Modern Era (M. Mikołajczyk, A Criminal Trial in Towns of Małopolska Region between the 16th and 18th Centuries, Silesia University Press, Katowice 2013)

Monografia procesu kryminalnego w miastach małopolskich doby nowożytnej (M. Mikołajczyk, Proces kryminalny w miastach Małopolski XVI-XVIII wieku, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, Katowice 2013, 620 s.; Prace Naukowe Uniwersytetu Śląskiego)

Author(s): Maciej Mikuła / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 4/2014

The reviewed book is an extensive study devoted to criminal trial as conducted in the towns of Southern Poland of early modern period. The author relied on particularly rich source material composed of norm-setting acts, writings of lawyers engaged in theoretical analysis and a large number of court books referring to penal cases, both those presented in the form of manuscripts as well as those that appeared in print. The significance of the study consists in the exploitation by its author of the sources illustrative of legal practice. The author investigated, with a particular precision, the factual course that the municipal criminal trial used to take in more serious penal cases. He laid a particular emphasis on the fairly well source-supported evidentiary proceedings. Worthy of note is his analysis devoted to the substantial law basis according to which the judgements were passed. The analysis showed that in the 16th through 18th centuries, in the municipal courts the local customary law played significant role, apart from that played by the Saxon and Magdeburg legal systems. On the basis of the research that he made the author suggests a conclusion that, despite the differences detectable in the practice of the respective towns, there functioned a uniform municipal penal procedure. The latter was characterized by certain features. These were: 1) the absence – in general – of individualized inquiry that would precede the judicial part of proceedings; 2) the instituting and conducting the judicial proceedings through ex officio method being regarded as something absolutely exceptional; 3) the proceedings were – as a rule – instituted due to the proposal of the plaintiff although sometimes they were instituted through the handing one of the

Selected aspects of a university’s sustainable development strategy

Wybrane aspekty strategii zrównoważonego rozwoju uczelni wyższej

Author(s): Remigiusz Napiecek / Language(s): English / Issue: 5/2019

Keywords: university; strategy; research activity; sustainable development;

The introduction of the Constitution for Science has initiated a series of changes in universities in Poland. Particularly important are changes which will conform to the universities’ structure to the new evaluation criteria, and consequently will affect their financial conditions. The concerns presented in the article refer to the sustainable development strategy of a university. This strategy should enable universities not to assess all of their research and educational employees according to the same criteria or according to the same threshold values. All academic teachers work for the success of the university, however, each of them to a different degree. This differentiation may result not only from the individual predispositions of employees but also from the adopted strategic assumptions. The article aims to present some aspects of the implementation of a university’s strategy with regard to subsidies granted under the Law on Higher Education and Science in Poland.

The university as a common good and a common interest

The university as a common good and a common interest

Uniwersytet jako wspólne dobro i wspólny interes

Author(s): Jerzy J. Parysek / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 3/2019

Keywords: university; common good; common interest;

New legal regulations concerning the organization, structure and functioning of science and higher education, called the Constitution for Science 2.0 (Act of 20 July 2018 on Higher Education and Science), mean a revolutionary transformation of Polish scientific and educational institutions. The proposed changes, even though they were widely expected in academic circles awaiting a systemic reform, raise many objections and hopes at the same time. However, the changes are being gradually implemented and one must adapt to them (dura lex sed lex). Therefore, while adapting our activity to the new conditions of the functioning of the university, when co-creating its new structure, registering one’s own scientific and didactic activity as a new branch and discipline of science, and taking a particular position regarding the ongoing changes, it may be worth paying attention to the fact that the university as a whole is our common good and its effective functioning is a common interest of the academic community. The article aims to apply the ideas of the common good and the common interest to understanding the university and the functioning of its community. This is important when new legal regulations, being a new challenge, are probably also an opportunity for the further, successful development of the institution we all work in. These kinds of deliberations are preceded by a reconstruction of the state of Polish science and higher education in the years before the changes were implemented, together with the changes that were suggested over the years. The reflections contained in this text may be helpful in our thinking and our activity. This paper presents the subjective views and opinions of the author. It is dedicated to the late Professor Teresa Rabska, the Editor-in-Chief of the Ruch Prawniczy, Ekonomiczy i Socjologiczny (Journal of Law, Economics and Sociology) for many years, who, as a Vice-Rector of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, in the difficult times of martial law encouraged her co-workers to defend this common good, which is the university, and to care about its prosperity.

The aim of the article is to present the achievements of the employees of the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy in mathematical education over forty years of its functioning. Mathematics is a particularly important area of teaching a young child, which builds the basis for later education and largely determines its success or failure. That is why it is so important to train the teachers of kindergarten and primary education so that they can build a good basis for teaching this subject.

The elimination of architectural obstacles and adaptation of the interiors appear as insufficient measures for the people with disabilities in Poland. County libraries are equipped with computers and other materials meant to facilitate their contact with people with disabilities, but those aids are not always utilized to their full potential. The preliminary study looks at the county libraries in the Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia and Dąbrowa Basin in terms of their inclusivity with regard to people with disabilities. Moreover, the study analyzes Library Studies curricula across the universities in Poland, paying particular attention to the issues connected with serving people with disabilities.

Stories from Upper Silesia. Spór o przynależność Górnego Śląska w latach 1919–1921 w relacjach brytyjskich korespondentów prasowych

Author(s): Agnieszka Misiurska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 90/2022

Keywords: British press; press correspondents; Silesian Uprisings; Upper Silesian plebiscite; Wojciech Korfanty; Upper Silesia

The interest in the fate of Upper Silesia between 1919–1921 overreached Poland and Germany. Apart from the contemporary superpowers, the situation of Upper Silesia was also of great interest to the Western public opinion, including the British one. Great Britain was then an undisputed superpower not only in the military, political and economic sense but also in the field of media. Consequently, British dailies sent out numerous press correspondents whose reports were printed in the press of great opinion-forming importance and large circulation. The years 1919–1921 were a turbulent period in the history of Upper Silesia, as three armed uprisings and a plebiscite took place on its territory. The unrest of these events was enhanced by the fact that both Silesian Germans and Poles supported their countries, and also that allied occupation troops were stationed there. In addition, the plebiscite area was governed by the Inter-Allied Ruling and Plebiscite Commission, which was to develop a plan for the division of Upper Silesia. For the British public opinion, the events in Upper Silesia may have seemed quite incomprehensible. That is why the most significant British newspapers – “The Times”, “Manchester Guardian” and “Pall Mall Gazette” – sent their correspondents who then resided in Warsaw and Berlin. They were writing down their experiences, observations and descriptions of the people they met – both those significant for current events, as well as for ordinary dwellers of Upper Silesian in the period around the plebiscite. Then they were sending their accounts to Great Britain. Now these documents constitute an extremely rich source of the history of Upper Silesia, also being primary sources as some of the information provided by the correspondents has not been published anywhere else.
