The Reception of Gerard of Cenad’s Deliberatio supra hymnum trium puerorum ad Isingrimum Liberalem in Romania. The edition of Radu Constantinescu (I)

The Reception of Gerard of Cenad’s Deliberatio supra hymnum trium puerorum ad Isingrimum Liberalem in Romania. The edition of Radu Constantinescu (I)

Author(s): Claudiu Mesaroș / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2016

Keywords: Gerard of Cenad; Deliberatio; Medieval philosophy; reception of Medieval Philosophy in Romania; Radu Constantinescu; rationalism; anti-clericalism; materialism;

The Romanian edition of Deliberatio supra hymnum truym puerorum from 1984 still stands as the only textual reference available to the Romanian academia and continues to influence the general reception of Gerard’s text. It has been more than thirty years since this selective translation was published by the Romanian publisher Meridiane and there was practically no critical reaction to it, which could suggest either minimal interest or minimal access to alternative sources. We believe both hypotheses are worth considering and we support the need for a more systematic approach to Radu Constantinescu’s work in order to support the idea of a new Romanian translation and commentary. The present study critically examines Răzvan Theodorescu’s Foreword and Radu Constantinescu’s introductory study. We leave for future investigation the consistency of the translated selection and the Comments published at the end of the text.

‘I’m chequered’. Jewish Identity in Janusz Korczak’s Literary and Theatrical Work

‘I’m chequered’. Jewish Identity in Janusz Korczak’s Literary and Theatrical Work

“Io sono a scacchi”. L’identità ebraica nell’opera letteraria e teatrale di Janusz Korczak

Author(s): Giovanna Tomassucci / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 3/2016

Keywords: Janusz Korczak; 20th-century Polish literature; Polish Jews; antisemitism;

This paper focuses on the problem of ethnic coexistence as presented in some of Korczak’s literary and dramatic works, from his earlier humorous short stories to the play The Senate of Madmen. Like many Polish writers, Korczak perceived literature as a space of freedom, but, unlike other Jews writing in Polish, he always stressed his Jewishness and his firm belief in an equal and double identity (Jewish and Polish). In his long literary career Korczak never practiced ethnic agnosticism: on the contrary, he brought the tradition of Ashkenazi humor and Yiddish literary topics (szmonces, schlemiel and nudnik, the shtetl) into Polish culture, converting these symbols of Jewish identity into universal cultural elements.

„Spune tu, Mironică!” Cei cinci ani de glorie ai lui Miron Constantinescu şi relaţia sa cu Gheorghiu-Dej, I: 1952-1954

Author(s): Dan Cătănuş / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 1-2/2020

Keywords: Miron Constantinescu; Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej; Romanian Workers Party; right-deviation; New Course; De-Stalinization;

The author of this study argues that the golden era of Miron Constantinescu started in 1952 when fighting shoulder to shoulder with Gheorghiu-Dej against „the right deviators” brought him to the climax of political influence. That boost him to number one in the leading of Romanian economy and one of the most important RWP leaders.The first part of this study follows the rising of Miron Constantinescu and the evolution of his relationship with Gheorghiu Dej up to their frictions regarding the sentencing to death of Lucreţiu Pătrăşcanu, in spring 1954.

„Spune tu, Mironică!” Cei cinci ani de glorie ai lui Miron Constantinescu şi relaţia sa cu Gheorghiu-Dej, II: 1954-1956

Author(s): Dan Cătănuş / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 3-4/2020

Keywords: Miron Constantinescu; Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej; Romanian Workers Party; New Course; destalinization; Nicolae Ceauşescu;

The second part of the article follows how the relationship of Miron Constantinescu and Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej evolved during 1954-1956, including the growing tension between the two RWP leaders. The personal frustrations of Miron Constantinescu explains the attempt to overthrow Dej, using the context of Khruschev’s destalinisation. The author of the study analyses Constantinescu’s failed coup in spring 1956 and the end of his five finest years. Although he was rehabilitated by Nicolae Ceauşescu and brought back in the RCP leadership in 1969, Miron Constantinescu never again enjoyed the power he had during 1952-1956.

In-text Language Games in the Novel Pleasant things. Utopiaby Tamara Bołdak-Janowska

Wewnątrztekstowe gry językowe w powieści "Rzeczy uprzyjemniające". Utopia Tamary Bołdak-Janowskiej

Author(s): Agnieszka Goral / Language(s): Polish / Issue: XXIII/2021

Keywords: T. Bołdak-Janowska; postmodernist novel; narrative games; lexical and semantic games; language games

This article is devoted to language games in the Polish contemporary novel Pleasant things. Utopia by T. Bołdak-Janowska. The subject of the analysis are in-text games: narrative (themes and threads), graphic, sound, lexical and semantic (repetitions of themes and lexemes, antonyms, semantic neologisms) and word-formation (word-formation neologisms), as well as autocreation games of the narrator (knowledge / ignorance). The study indicates that in the analyzed novel language games play a significant role: they determine the multifaceted and attractive character of a work based on a world presented by the narrator's uninhibited imagination. Narrative games, exemplified by the theme of counting, indicate the complexity of human fate – the runner of history – and his entanglement in a number of interpersonal relationships, as well as the historical process itself, which is subject to constant changes, both locally and globally, independent of the will of the individual. Graphic games are based on modern language fashion, functioning especially in the environment of the youth. Sound games are based on the technique of threading referring to Bolero by Maurice Ravel. Lexical-semantic games, being a tool for describing added meanings, connotated according to a known (or – more often – created by the narrator) language, take the reader into a utopian world and at the same time – relatively perfect, i.e., dependent on the point of view of the speaker I-women.

Theater Games and Stage Improvisation. Mirroring the becoming through play: child versus actor

Theater Games and Stage Improvisation. Mirroring the becoming through play: child versus actor

Jocurile teatrale şi improvizaţia scenică. Oglindirea devenirii prin joc: copil versus actor

Author(s): Andreea Hristu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: theatre games; play; game; childhood learning through games; theatre learning through games; abilities; competencies;

Once a child is born, he starts to play. It is his way to discover the world and eventually himself. Across time and cultures, the becoming of the human individual follows the same pattern. Research has shown that games are significant to this process. By experiencing his environment playfully, both on his own and through interpersonal engagement, the child acquires valuable information that shape his development as a person and his view of the world. Also, this phase works as a training period for the adult life to come. By comparison, the becoming of the actor follows the same stages as the playing child, thus making theatre games essential in the study of Acting.

Theatrical Geographies Alongside the History and the River (III): Seine River – via Marly – to Versailles

Geografii teatrale pe firul istoriei și al râului (III): Sena – via Marly – spre Versailles

Author(s): Cristian Stamatoiu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 1-2/2022

Keywords: Sena River; „Marly machine“; Versailles; spectacles of Louis XIV; Molière;

The study follows the cultural route fertilized by the Seine, after exiting Paris towards the west. It is about the impressive hydrographic adduction of the river with the help of the „Marly machine“, in order to animate the water games and the fireworks in the gardens of Versailles / Trianon palace during the reign of Louis XIV. In this space, a culture of the outdoors spectacle was developed, through royal entertainment and gallant games, but also via private theatrical performances held in various venues, of which the most imposing is the one finalized by Louis XV: the Royal Opera added to the north wing of the palace. The names of the great classics of the theatre can be linked to these spectacle events, such as Corneille, Racine, Molière, and also the musician Lully, the choreographer Beauchamp, or the intendant Viga- rani, not to mention the architectural spectacle resulting from the collaboration of the Sun King with his famous court artists: architects (Le Vau, Le Nôtre, Mansart, etc.) and painters (Le Brun, Poussin, etc.).

The “Dotsiaˮ Generation: The Problem of Traumatic War Experience and the Novel “Dotsiaˮ by Tamara Gorikha Zernya

Generacija “Ćera”: problem traumatičnog iskustva rata (na primeru romana Ćera Tamare Goriha Zernja)

Author(s): Ulyana Fedoriv / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 87-88/2022

Keywords: trauma; generation; military literature; post memory; identity;

The article offers for consideration a literary interpretation of the modern Russian-Ukrainian war using the example of Tamara Gorikha Zernya’s novel Dotsia. The main focus is on the problem of memory and the trauma of entire generations caught up in the war. The memory of generations serves as the main means of representing one’s own identity, which is reflected in various aspects. First of all, this is self awareness as a representative of a certain cultural group, national identity, as well as generational affiliation. The literary representation of trauma in Tamara Gorikha Zernya’s novel Dotsia is reflected through the consciousness of a person involved in the war. Primarily war is associated with a crisis of personal, collective, and national identities, which leads to the loss of any value orientations. The author of the article, synthesizing the work of trauma studies and memory studies in a methodological approach tries to trace how to (re)live the war, accept and overcome this traumatic experience, and resuscitate the national memory in the context of the dominance of post-Soviet and pro-Russian narratives, to find one’s national identity.

Forms of the Past in the Present. Victoria and Europe by D. Greig Between Cultural Memory and Theatrical Reception

Forme del passato nel presente. Victoria e Europe di D. Greig fra memoria culturale e ricezione teatrale

Author(s): Carla Dente / Language(s): Italian / Issue: 44/2023

Keywords: Contemporary Scottish Theatre; History; Collective Memory and Culture; David Greig; Europe; Victory;

The articulation of time-space dimensions is a theme both for theorists of various disciplines and for those who deal with the problems of the exegesis of texts. The globalization process makes us perceive a hybrid present and permeable spaces, both with cultural consequences in relation to the process of attribution of meaning. This is the very broad outline in which I read the texts of D.
