ANALYZE THE EFFICIENCY OF KEYWORD SEARCH ALGORITHMS

Author(s): Andreea Radulescu,Daniela Enachescu / Language(s): English / Issue: 18/2012

Keywords: String matching; keyword search; text editors (word processing)

This paper intends to analyze, through developed software, the answer of various algorithms to keyword search in random strings problems within the constraint of time and memory space used. The program developed is able to choose, depending on the algorithm used, the maximum number of characters used to comply with data constraints. Afterwards, the performance of algorithms in operations of keyword search in random strings is analyzed. Tests were performed by generating random texts of different lengths, using different character sets. Results can be used to minimize search time, such as in the FIND function used by text editors.

The Search for Virtue

The Search for Virtue

Traganje za vrlinom

Author(s): Aleksandar Nikitović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 4/2011

Keywords: virtue; state; politics; ethics; tradition; theory of ideas

In the combat for virtue, waged between Plato and the Sophists, Plato was striving to keep the contents of old Hellenic ethics, but not their mythical form, where Sophism discovered significant shortcomings and thanks to that challenged the whole contents of old Hellenic ethics. On the other hand, Plato accepted the new form of rational thinking, but not the dismantling unilateralism of Sohpism rationality. In other words, Plato embarked on theoreticizing the contents of old Hellenic ethics, aspiring to reconcile the fundamental principle of traditional view of the world with the new ruling form of thinking.

Kul'turologija: Russia's Search for Identity

Author(s): Jutta Scherrer / Language(s): English / Issue: 01-04/2002

Keywords: culture; Russia; cultural identity; Russian society

In this paper, I insist on using the Russian concept kul’turologija, in spite of the seeming affinity of its rise to the ‘cultural turn’ that has taken place in the last two decades in social and cultural studies in Western academia, particularly in the Englishspeaking world. Before engaging in a discussion of this affinity, I want to describe the main trends of, and explain the driving forces behind, the culturological discourse in Russia and point out the reason for the social demand it tries to meet. Following on this clarification, it will be possible to draw a comparison between kul’turologija and the prominence of various forms of culturalism or the new cultural history in Western countries.

In Search for EU Foreign Policy

Author(s): Dov Lynch / Language(s): English / Issue: 01/2007

Keywords: European Neighborhood Policy; EU; foreign policy

This paper explores questions concerning the EU approach towards its Eastern neighbors, as well as the guiding premises of EU foreign policy towards these states without promising to answer them fully. The argument is divided into three parts, starting, first, with a discussion of the ‘foreign policy’ framework that the EU had built with enlargement and the challenges this framework now faces. Second, the paper examines the European Neighborhood Policy in light of the wider questions raised above. Third, the paper finishes with thoughts on what could be done to strengthen the EU foreign policy profile.

In search of the best technique for vocabulary acquisition

Author(s): Mohammad Mohseni-Far / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2008

Keywords: vocabulary learning/acquisition; lexical knowledge; lexical development; strategies and techniques; curriculum development

The present study is intended to critically examine vocabulary learning/acquisition techniques within second/foreign language context. Accordingly, the purpose of this survey is to concentrate particularly on the variables connected with lexical knowledge and establish a fairly all-inclusive framework which comprises and expounds on the most signifi cant strategies and relevant factors within the vocabulary acquisition context. At the outset, the study introduces four salient variables; learner, task and strategy serve as a general structure of inquiry (Flavell’s cognitive model, 1992). Besides, the variable of context is introduced to enrich the examination process. The analysis specifi cally looks in depth at task-dependent strategies for this variable is much more substantial and yet in practice possesses more pedagogical implications. In lieu of seeking out superior strategies and techniques that bring about optimal outcomes, the investigator lays stress on the relative effectiveness of each individual strategy and technique. The organic idea of this exploration is that the most effectual and successful lexical development will occur in fl exible and highly interactive syllabuses with a pedagogically well-reasoned balance between explicit and implicit activities.

Immigrant Entrepreneurs: in Search of Identity

Author(s): Beata Glinka,Agnieszka Brzozowska / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2015

Keywords: identity; entrepreneurs; immigrant entrepreneurship; immigrant identity; Vietnamese entrepreneurs; Polish entrepreneurs

Objective: The purpose of this study is to show identity construction processes of immigrant entrepreneurs and the way these identities are constructed and reconstructed in business and migration experiences. Research Design & Methods: The findings are based on two qualitative research projects on immigrant entrepreneurs: Vietnamese entrepreneurs in Poland and Polish entrepreneurs in the USA. Both studies were based on ethnographic inspiration. Open interviews and observations were used to collect primary data. Findings: The study indicates that identity construction is a process of an interplay of three main elements: being an immigrant, being an entrepreneur, and sense of nationality. This interplay takes place in different, overlapping dimensions: private, social, national and professional, and it takes place in a certain cultural context. Identities of immigrants are constantly constructed and reconstructed in their search for belonging and freedom at the same time. Implications & Recommendations: The results imply that the issue of immigrant entrepreneurship requires open, culturally-oriented and comparative studies. Recommendations for further studies are formulated in the last section of the paper. Contribution & Value Added: The paper provides insight into the processes of migration between different cultural and institutional contexts and their impact on entrepreneurs’ identities.

Invisible web academic search engines

Author(s): Ryszard Błaszkiewicz / Language(s): English / Issue: 26/2015

Keywords: invisible web; search engines; web robots; databases;

In the Information Age information has become a basic need. Due to technological advancements, a large amount of information is available on the Web – many billions of pages, which has become a complex entity containing information from a variety of sources. On the Internet, a user has access to a wide variety of services: vast information sources, electronic mail, file transfer, interest group membership, interactive collaboration, multimedia displays, and more. So it is very important to know how to use web search engines that browse the sites effectively and therefore find the required information on the Internet. But with the explosive growth of information on the WWW, it becomes more and more difficult for users to accurately find and completely retrieve what they want. Most information is found on the Internet by utilizing search engines that uses web robots to query millions of pages and creates an index of those web pages. Typical search engines actually access only a tiny fraction of the Internet. Google, the largest search database, currently has around 50 billion web pages indexed. That’s a lot of information. But it is nothing compared to what else is out there. Google can only index a visible web, or a searchable web. The sites that traditional searches yield are part of what is known as the Surface Web. Beneath the Web is what is referred to as the Deep or Invisible Web. Most of the information available on the Invisible Web is found in specialized databases. While the size of the Invisible Web is tremendously large, there are certain search engines, directories and databases that allow you to search for more specialized, academic information. While the following list is not exhaustive, it is a great place for you to start your research on the Invisible Web. The Invisible Web includes documents and interactive tools e.g. dictionaries, reference works, materials held in intranets, and databases that are accessible through a dialogue window e.g. some archives, document databases, library catalogues.

Data, Their Relevance to Competition and Search Engines

Author(s): Rastislav Funta / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2021

Keywords: Competition; Data; Digital Markets; GDPR; Market Shares; Search Engines

A special feature of digital markets and digital business models is the high importance of (user) data. The control and the ability to analyze large amounts of data (big data) can create competitive advantage. Thus, the importance of data for the economic success of companies should be given more consideration in competition law proceedings. In search services competition, the quality factor plays a decisive role, since the expected quality of the search results determines which search engine will be used by users. Since search engines can influence the retrievability of web pages for users, preference of own search services in the web index may constitute an abusive behavior of a dominant search engine. The purpose of this paper is to provide answers on questions, among other, whether a regulation aimed at preventing abuses is necessary or whether an obligation to publish the search algorithm may be advocated.

Author(s): Marek Raganowicz / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Walter Bonatti; The Mountains of My Life; himalayism; alpinism; alpine style in mountaineering; mountain literature

The story of Walter Bonatti and his mountaineering and literary legacy starts from an event, duly fictionalized, which has as its background the Poland of the 1980s and the living conditions in a country beyond the Iron Curtain, where even finding information or being able to get close to “the sources” could be a problem. Going to loot or shoplift a library, an act in itself more than execrable, could at the time be a last resort for those who craved knowledge, or even one of the various gestures of impatience and silent rebellion against the regime by a historically indomitable population unwilling to have leadership figures that were not their own. Marek “Regan” Raganowicz grew up in that culture and society, and in his stories he loves so much to refer to the period of his growth and the beloved contradictions of his revered homeland.
