Link between Impulsivity and Overeating: Psychological and Neurobiological Perspectives

Link between Impulsivity and Overeating: Psychological and Neurobiological Perspectives

Link between Impulsivity and Overeating: Psychological and Neurobiological Perspectives

Author(s): Deniz Atalayer / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2018

Keywords: impulsivity; overeating; binge eating; obesity;

In most basic terms impulsivity is defined as a tendency to act without control. Impulsivity has been implicated in the onset, symptomatic expression, and maintenance of overeating. Specifically, high impulsivity and associated poor inhibitory control, along with sensation seeking and reward sensitivity, as well as negative affect have been found to have an interaction effect on emotional eating, which may lead to binge eating and obesity. Moreover, associations between overeating and impulsive behaviors such as difficulty in response inhibition, planning, attention, addiction, or risk taking etc. have been previously shown. The purpose of this review is to summarize the evidence from psychology regarding the potential role of the impulsivity trait in overeating, with implications on the treatments for obesity and binge eating.

Cognitive-Behavioral Approach in Marital Therapy

Cognitive-Behavioral Approach in Marital Therapy

Cognitive-Behavioral Approach in Marital Therapy

Author(s): Rojin Yazar,Özlem Tolan / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2021

Keywords: Cognitive-behavioral therapy; marital therapy; psychotherapy;

Marital relationship is considered as a positive and life-enriching factor. Nevertheless, there exist disagreements and conflicts in marriage, which could also be serious stressors that affect the lives of the individuals. Effective solutions for prevailing problems ensure the functional continuity of the family. Cognitive-behavioral therapies developed to resolve marital problems were commonly intended to modify the unrealistic expectations, problematic cognitions and behaviors of the spouses and to improve their interaction, using direct skill-based methods such as problem-solving and communication skills. Certain objectives of cognitive-behavioral marital therapy, which focus on the feelings, behaviors, and cognitions of spouses, include decreasing problematic behavioral interactions and increasing mutual emotional support between the spouses. In recent years, cognitive-behavioral marital therapy was adapted to address a wide range of individual, psychological, and medical problems. Cognitive-behavioral marital therapy studies based on marital conflict and individual psychopathologies are expected to be effective both for relationship compliance and for the improvement of psychopathological symptoms of the spouses.

Care Practices Supporting Prenatal Attachment

Prenatal Bağlanmayı Destekleyici Bakım Uygulamaları

Author(s): Gamze Teskereci,Aysun Ünal,Nazlı Özbek,Bedia Koçak / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 4/2021

Keywords: pregnancy; nurse; midwives; maternal-fetal attachment; prenatal attachment; prenatal care;

Mother-baby attachment is a process that starts from the pregnancy period and continues in the birth and postpartum period. Nurses working in the field of women’s health and midwives have important roles and responsibilities in supporting prenatal attachment. In this review, it is aimed to present the measurement tools, influencing factors and supporting evidence-based applications that evaluate prenatal attachment in the light of literature. As a result of the literature review; “Maternal-Fetal Attachment Scale”, “Prenatal Attachment Inventory”, “Maternal Prenatal Attachment Scale” and “Prenatal Attachment Scale”, which evaluated mother-infant attachment in pregnant women and whose validity and reliability were made in Turkish, were reached. In these studies, it was revealed that many individual and environmental factors of the pregnant woman affected prenatal attachment. In experimental studies available, it was shown that fetal movement count, leopold maneuver practice, pregnancy training and counseling, father training, birth preparation training, relaxation exercise and guided imagery, cognitive behavioral therapies, yoga and meditation practices support prenatal attachment, while listening to music does not affect it. Nurses are recommended to provide training and counseling to pregnant women with low prenatal attachment risk on these cheap and non-invasive practices, and to support the pregnant woman to use the most appropriate method for her. In addition, it was found that studies testing the effectiveness of evidence-based practices in prenatal attachment are limited in our country and more randomized controlled studies are needed.

A Current Overview on Emotion Regulation: Contextual Factors

Duygu Düzenlemeye Güncel Bir Bakış: Bağlamsal Faktörler

Author(s): Pelin Bintaş Zörer,Orçun Yorulmaz / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: Emotion regulation; contextual factors in emotion regulation; interpersonal emotion regulation; process model; assessment of emotion regulation;

Emotion regulation is a transdiagnostic concept which has been frequently studied in the field of psychological health. Although these empirical studies in the relevant literature revealed important findings, it has also been currently mentioned that emotion regulation is mostly studied with certain tools having some limitations but it is not a uniform subject, and there are some contextual factors in emotion regulation which has been considered as having determinative role. In this sense, when we say emotion regulation now, we can refer several contextual factors such as relevant situation/event, emotion that is regulated, interpersonal conditions, spontaneous emergence of emotion regulation strategies, co-occurrence of various regulation methods, efficacy of the strategies and specific time frame of regulation. In this article, it is aimed to first describe emotion regulation which is frequently mentioned in national and international literature, and then, to review recent empirical research findings and to question limitations of traditional approaches toward emotion regulation by examining some salient contextual factors and finally, to present some relevant suggestions based on current approaches.

Kabul ve Kararlılık Terapisi Odaklı Deneysel Araştırmalar: Sistematik Bir Gözden Geçirme

Author(s): Asiye Dursun,Mücahit Akkaya / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 3/2022

Keywords: Acceptance and commitment therapy; psychoeducation; group intervention; systematic review; young adult; adolescent;

This research aimed to provide a systematic review of postgraduate theses that investigate the effectiveness of group interventions prepared based on acceptance and commitment therapy. Following this purpose search was carried out in several databases to include articles and theses written in Turkish on acceptance and commitment therapy without any year restrictions. As a result of the screening, 907 theses and articles were evaluated according to the PRISMA guideline and the selection criteria for the current research 2 article and 7 doctoral theses meeting the criteria were included in the research. It is seen that the studies examined within the scope of the research were prepared in the form of a psychoeducational program to proceed with different variables such as “coping competence, the meaning of life, peer bullying, decision-making strategies, body image flexibility, social appearance anxiety, fear of negative evaluation and test anxiety” and carried out by the researcher themselves. The articles selected for the research were inspected in terms of research model, research group, research design, characteristics of group interventions, measurement tools used, and the effectiveness of group interventions. Acceptance and commitment therapy-based programs examined within the scope of the research seem to be effective on the dependent variable. In the results obtained, it is recommended to use acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in protecting and preventive mental health services to prepare adolescents and young adults.

Romantic Relationship Education: A Literature Review with Recommendations for Turkey

Romantic Relationship Education: A Literature Review with Recommendations for Turkey

Author(s): Ayşe Esra İşmen Gazioğlu,Çare Sertelin Mercan,İlkay Demir / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2022

Keywords: Relationship education; romantic relations; emerging adulthood; adolescence;

Intimate relationships are the focal aspiration for human beings. Romantic relationship education is described as a road map for helping people to find strategies and solutions that fit their context, values and relationship goals. By using evidence-based skills training, people can learn techniques to navigate typical relationship challenges and safely express emotions. Being in a mutually satisfying committed relationship has proven to be associated with many positive outcomes including life satisfaction, physical well-being, better coping with major illness, as well as longer life expectancy and career achievement. Relationship education programs are developed by psychologists in Western countries as a preventive intervention for couples, adolescents and emerging adults before relationships reach crisis stage. There is, however, a lack of empirical studies to examine the effectiveness of relationship education within the Turkish cultural context. The overarching aim of this study is to review the relationship education programs within Turkish and international literature. This study provides an overview of the relationship education, and its scope, and theoretical foundations and also effectiveness of relationship education programs for couples, adolescents and emerging adults. The study further provides cultural, theoretical and practical recommendations for future directions in Turkish relationship education programs.

Inclusiveness as a key determinant of work engagement: evidence from V4 countries

Inclusiveness as a key determinant of work engagement: evidence from V4 countries

Inclusiveness as a key determinant of work engagement: evidence from V4 countries

Author(s): Igor Borisov,Szergej Vinogradov / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2022

Keywords: empowerment; workplace autonomy; organizational learning environment; structural equation modeling;

Research background: There is currently a need for empirical research regarding the validity of specific work environment model elements supported by strong statistical evidence. The amount of research conducted in this field has been particularly limited in Central-Eastern Europe. The desire to fill in these gaps was at least in part responsible for the uniqueness of the research approach and its differences from previous similar studies.Purpose of the article: The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting employee engagement and to examine their relationship with each other using Visegrad countries as an example.Methods: The initial data is taken from the fourth European Company Survey (2019) for management respondents. After data cleaning, the sample sizes for Czechia, Hungary Poland, and Slovakia are N(CZ)=904, N(HU)=682, N(PL)=511, and N(SK)=361, respectively. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), the following five dimensions were identified for this research: (1) inclusiveness, (2) empowerment, (3) work autonomy, (4) organizational learning environment, and (5) work engagement. An analysis of structural equation modeling (SEM) was conducted to determine the links that exist among these dimensions of a constructive work environment.Findings & value added: The structural model indicates that inclusiveness and empowerment have a significant positive impact on work engagement in all the countries examined. Inclusiveness was the strongest predictor of work engagement, followed by empowerment. Both of the two other predictors in the model (workplace autonomy and organizational learning environment) generally had less or no effect on employee engagement. The present study extends recent literature on work engagement by empirically validating the influence of workplace environment-related factors, as well as providing useful organizational policy recommendations for managers.

A multivariate approach towards the measurement of active employee participation in the area of occupational health and safety in different sectors of the economy

A multivariate approach towards the measurement of active employee participation in the area of occupational health and safety in different sectors of the economy

A multivariate approach towards the measurement of active employee participation in the area of occupational health and safety in different sectors of the economy

Author(s): Katarzyna Boczkowska,Konrad Niziołek,Elżbieta Roszko-Wójtowicz / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2022

Keywords: employee participation; health and safety management; safety culture; synthetic measure of active employee participation; factor analysis; sectors of the economy; factor analysis and principal compone

Research background: Despite a dynamically growing exploration of broadly understood employee participation, there is still space left for more in-depth or new analyses in this area, and occupational health and safety (OHS) serves as a good example in this respect. In empirical studies, employee participation in the field of occupational health and safety is not treated as a separate element of ensuring safety in the organisation, but only as a minor element of occupational health and safety management, or as just one of the elements building a safety culture.Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to propose a synthetic measure of active employee participation in OHS taking into account the depth and scope of this participation. A comparative analysis of the level of active participation of OHS at medical facilities and in other sectors of the economy was also performed.Methods: The theoretical model for active employee participation in OHS was tested by means of a survey using the PAPI (Paper & Pen Personal Interview) method. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used. The developed construct (characterised by an adequately high level of validity and reliability) was used in a comparative analysis of medical institutions with other sectors of the economy with the use of the Mann?Whitney U test.Findings & value added: This research fills the theoretical gap in the model approach to participation in OHS. It has been found (EFA and CFA analyses) that active employee participation in OHS consists of one dimension (15 items). The model for active employee participation in OHS and the universal measurement scale developed and validated in this study represent a step forward towards the effective and reliable measurement of employee participation. In addition, the research has shown that the level of active employee participation in OHS at medical facilities is lower than in other sectors of the economy. The added value of this paper results from the approach to measuring employee participation in OHS which takes into account the depth and scope of this participation. The tool is consistent with international regulations and standards in the field of OHS, and thus can be used in other countries to assess active employee participation in OHS, regardless of the size and profile of the company or the sector of the economy.

Crisis oral history: Towards field research in times of crisis

Crisis oral history: Towards field research in times of crisis

Krizová orální historie: k terénnímu výzkumu v čase krizí

Author(s): Jiří Hlaváček / Language(s): Czech / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: oral history; crisis; memory; trauma; field research

The overview study focuses on a closer presentation of the dynamically developing interdisciplinary direction within oral history in recent years. The so-called crisis oral history focuses on documenting the actor’s reflection of survivors or eyewitnesses of extreme, crisis or otherwise traumatic events, during or shortly after their end. The author first presents a brief development of crisis oral history and a varied range of research topics (war conflicts, suppression of human rights, natural disasters, mass disasters, terrorist attacks, forced migration, pandemics, etc.) from the first half of the last century to the present day, including key milestones such as terrorist attacks from September 11, 2001 or the recent coronavirus pandemic. Attention is also paid to the theoretical, methodological and ethical aspects of crisis field research (including challenges and possible pitfalls) with an emphasis on the issue of traumatic memories within oral-historical interviews.

The social markets of compassion; bargaining over compassion and the social space of institutional impunity. Humanitarian crises in Poland in 2021–2022

Społeczny rynek współczucia, targi o współczucie i społeczna przestrzeń zinstytucjonalizowanej bezkarności. Kryzysy humanitarne w Polsce w latach 2021–2022

Author(s): Agnieszka Golczyńska-Grondas / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 3/2022

Keywords: compassion; humanitarian crisis; social market of compassion; social space of institutionalized impunity;

The central term of the article is compassion analyzed as a social phenomenon and a category that can be applied to interpretations of individual and collective behavior and attitudes. In the worldview disputes currently taking place in the public space, a mechanism known in sociology from the analysis of poverty and social exclusion is revealed – namely, the division of those deserving compassion and those who should be deprived of it. The justifications for this division, referring to the axiological sphere, are also revealed with particular sharpness in the situation of the humanitarian crisis – the one on the Polish-Belarusian border and the other caused by Russia’s renewed aggression against Ukraine, in different attitudes towards “closer” and “further” Others. It is my position that justifications referring to the category of compassion, embodied in the cognitive component of attitudes, create a social market of compassion conceptualized as a space in which discursive in its nature bargains for compassion take place. At the same time, these justifications form the foundation of social practices, both the aid and rescue activities of individuals, self-organized groups identifying themselves with civil society and NGOs appealing to the values of community and humanitas, as well as formal and informal anormative actions undertaken by social actors in the social space of (institutionalized) impunity.

Practising Resistance. About the “Revolutionary” Poetry of Julia Fiedorczuk

Practising Resistance. About the “Revolutionary” Poetry of Julia Fiedorczuk

Praktykowanie oporu. O „rewolucyjnej” poezji Julii Fiedorczuk

Author(s): Andrzej Juchniewicz / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 11/2022

Keywords: poetry against violence; the poetics of resistance; fragility; suffering

The author of the article, analysing the works of Julia Fiedorczuk, described a poetic strategy that can be called “the poetics of resistance”. Its essential determinants emphasise the fragility of human and non-human beings, emphasising the connections between all beings and the tightness of boundaries to regulate any systems (organic and political). Fiedorczuk proves that it is possible to include poetry in a network of activities aimed at opposing violence and suffering caused by terrorism or warfare in times of political crises and wars. According to the article’s author, it is necessary to recognise the revolutionary potential of Fiedorczuk’s poetry. It allows for the recognition of poetry as an effective way of counteracting what is undesirable due to the affective potential of poems and creating situations that the reader may experience. Poetry is, therefore, an exercise of mindfulness and the practice of resistance to phenomena that have consequences for individuals and society. Care is perhaps the most important feeling that causes Fiedorczuk to constantly change his idiom and give special meaning to the community. Writing about her poetry, the author uses Judith Butler’s theory of vulnerability to injury and concepts from nonviolent civil resistance studies.

Positive and Negative Lessons from Hidden Curriculum at a Philippine State University

Positive and Negative Lessons from Hidden Curriculum at a Philippine State University

Author(s): Louie Giray,Jelomil Edem,Daxjhed Louis Gumalin,Sheila May Lucero,Kasandra Christina Asuncion,Jomarie Jacob / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Hidden curriculum; college students; implicit learning; academic procrastination; collective cheating; personal development;

Background/purpose – Little attention is being put forward to the lesser-known type of curriculum–that is, hidden curriculum–most especially in the Philippine context. This study explored the positive and negative lessons from the hidden curriculum in higher education, with a Philippine state university as the research setting. Materials/methods – This study used qualitative case study. The data were obtained using online focused interviews and focus group discussions from Filipino college students. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results – For the positive lessons, college students implicitly imbibed the value of being compassionate. They also acquired behaviors and attitudes that are healthy for the development of their personality. Seeing that many people helped each other, they also learned to collaborate with people. For the negative lessons, college teachers acted as a cause of academic discord. They also were reported to have a lack of sympathy toward student circumstances. Toxic behavior, collective cheating, and high-pressure work environment were observed. Conclusion – If there is a group of people, such as in the university setting, there must be a hidden curriculum. By that, we pertain that the social environment always offers a hidden curriculum. The hidden curriculum offers both positive and negative lessons. Observed or not, it is impactful to students and other stakeholders. Further, the development of hidden curriculum undergoes an iterative cycle—hidden curriculum influences the collective, then the collective influences the hidden curriculum, ad infinitum.

Samples of a Place: Urban Field Recordings as a Sensitive Resource of Urban Cultural Heritage

Author(s): Jadwiga Zimpel / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2022

Keywords: immersive listening; qualitative analysis of places; recorded sound in use; media of urban heritage transmission; affect;

The paper focuses on various kinds of urban field recordings produced during research and artistic practices which apply auditory immersion in the qualitative analysis of places. Showing why and how urban field recordings might be used in locally guided placemaking practices, I propose to consider them as a sensitive resource of urban cultural heritage. A reflection on the sensitive quality of urban field recordings — a quality which stems from their susceptibility to the workings of time and their capability to transfer local affects — is realized in four parts. Part one posits the question of the relationship between urban sound and place, showing perspectives which arise from an application of listening in the qualitative analysis of places. Part two studies aspects of using, archiving, and sharing of field recordings produced within research, artistic and museum projects, accentuating the need to connect institutionally based practices with the promotion of audible culture in the pro-cess of establishing the notion of field recordings as a medium of urban heritage transmission. Part three proposes a shift from an interpretive to a performative approach in grasping the ontological status of urban field recordings, discussing them as samples of a place which are capable of transmitting local affects. Finally, part four recalls the idea of acousmatics to reflect upon the role of metadata in the reception of urban field recordings, which safeguards them from losing their cultural legibility. I argue that the lack of accompanying commentaries, which blurs the relation of recording with the place of sound sampling, does not erase the affective influence of the sound source transmitted by the sound sample. Such an observation leads to the conclusion that urban field recordings elude their framing in a single definition of heritage.

The discourse of slimming diets in contemporary Italian women's press. Qualitative analysis. Based on a corpus of articles extracted from contemporary Italian female magazines (2021) Donna Moderna and Grazia, this paper examines the nature of discourse of slimming diet. It is shown that the discourse has changed compared to the study conducted on the material from 2005-2008. Altogether 29 monthly issues have been analyzed. Currently emerging corpus does not contain many persuasive techniques related to emotions (Aristotle's pathos), the credibility of provided advice is enhanced mostly by arguments from authority (ethos). The innovation thus lies in the references to currently important societal topics, such as ecology (a manifestation of linguistic fashion). The research based on a rhetorical tools and analysis of press discourse shows that the topic of weight loss is treated nowadays with greater awareness and is being transferred to the pages of the men's press, in women's magazines its place is taken by e.g., cosmetic-surgical, or ecologic discourse. The conclusions from own research have been preceded by a review of theoretical issues in the field of a modern concept of a slimming diet, myth of beauty, development of the press in Italy, the role of cuisine and food in the Italian women's press.

Keywords: Materalism; sustainable consumption; green purchasing;

This study aims to investigate the impact of materialism on green purchasing intention and sustainable consumption behaviors. Within the context of this topic, it is investigated how materialist tendencies such as non-generosity, envy, and preservation affect green purchasing intention and sustainable consumption behaviors. Additionally, the mediating role of green purchasing intention in the effect of materialism on sustainable consumption behavior is examined. In this case, information was gathered from 537 consumers using an online survey methodology between May and June 2022. The consumers were chosen through convenience sampling and quota sampling methods. The data was first applied to descriptive statistics, followed by confirmatory factor analysis, path analysis, and mediation analysis. Mediation analysis was performed on the model using the bootstrap method. The programs SPSS and AMOS were used to analyze the data. The analysis's findings indicate that materialism has a significant effect on green purchasing intention and sustainable consumption behaviors, and green purchasing intention has a significant effect on sustainable consumption behaviors. In addition, there is a significant and indirect effect of green purchase intention on the effect of materialism on sustainable consumption behaviors.
