Women’s Involvement Level in Housework and Level of Irregularities in Public Service: The Need for Gender Sensitive Changes in Nigerian Work Policy

Author(s): Emem Bassey Inyang ,Reuben Etuk ,Reuben Etuk / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2011

Keywords: housework; public service; work irregularities; gender policy

Because of low socioeconomic wellbeing status across most families, women in Nigeria are becoming more and more involved in regular employment, while still maintaining their traditional role of performing housework. Meaningful employment and ensuring a balanced family are quite imperative to Nigeria, but what are the current dimensions of their interaction and how significant could this interaction be? This study utilized a field data generated in Calabar metropolis, the capital city of Cross River State, South Nigeria. Findings reveal that housework, women’s traditional role, makes them to sometimes display certain irregularities in their regular employment. This play down by women in their regular employment to live up to societal expectation as home keepers is explained using identity-behaviour link theory. Consequently, the paper recommends appropriate work policies and working conditions that are more women and family institution friendly in Nigeria.

Current Challenges for the Social and Professional Reintegration of Young Drug Users. Motivation through and for Work

Current Challenges for the Social and Professional Reintegration of Young Drug Users. Motivation through and for Work

Author(s): Adela Şleam,Mihaela Tomita / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2013

Keywords: Social reintegration; drug; drug user; risk factors; protection factors

Adolescence is seen as a critical period regarding the adoption of a behavior of drug consumption that leads to absenteeism, respectively dropout. But adolescence is the period during which individuals realize their own preferences regarding their educational and vocational route. The coordinates that essentially mark the status of a drug user in Romania are the impossibility of maintaining a stable socio-occupational frame, stigmatization, marginalization and even social exclusion. For these reasons, it is necessary to conduct activities that facilitate the access to the labor market of drug users that, because of the lack of training or work experience, have employment difficulties. In order to motivate drug users to reduce or give up the consumption behavior and to reintegrate on the labor market, it is important to consider his interest in certain areas of knowledge or activity. Also, the more obvious the overlap between career opportunities and personal values is, the more likely their choice and stability will be found in their choice. Seen from the perspective of current challenges, this paper analyzes and highlights the role that education, motivation for work and community support plays in the socio-professional reintegration of young drug users. In this context, the activity of reintegration of drug users cannot be reduced to working directly with the client, an extremely important role accounting for professionals in building support networks, starting from the specific resources for professional reintegration: socio-educational centers, socio-professional orientation centers, centers for promoting professional alternatives, educational, entertainment and leisure workshops, workshops for developing social skills, services for finding jobs.

Mary Poppins Comes Back: The Revival of Paid Domestic Work in the Informal Labour Market in Ukraine

Mary Poppins Comes Back: The Revival of Paid Domestic Work in the Informal Labour Market in Ukraine

Author(s): Alissa Tolstokorova / Language(s): English / Issue: 04/2014

Abstract. The research problem addressed in this article is the formation of an informal labour market of paid domestic services as a new form of gender-specific reproductive labour in Ukraine. The key objective of the paper is to analyse domestic work as a re-emerging area of informal employment, in light of its gender specificity. The paper analyses domestic care work as an informal commercial service and highlights the implications informality has for workers, employers and policy-making. It focuses on the gendered dimensions of domestic work, placing emphasis on male involvement in this field. It also traces the specificities of paid domestic services in the informal labour market in post-socialist Ukraine, and focuses on the informal practices involved in job offers, the social underpinnings of the revival of paid domestic work, the reverse class mobility in domestic work, and the high requirements placed on domestic workers, as well as competition on the informal labour market in Ukraine.

Author(s): Mariya Godovannaya,Anna Temkina / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2017

Keywords: Intensive-Extensive Mothering; Artists; Mothering; Sociology of Art; Feminism; Cultural Production

This feminist research analyzes the balance of gender roles among contemporary femaleartists after they become mothers and start combining their art making and maternalpractices. Using in-depth interviews and observations we study how women are inscribedinto the gendered institution of motherhood and how they find ways to resolvethe conflict between the roles. Our focus is on how professional artistic practices of femaleartists after childbirth coexist with practices of intensive-extensive motheringwhile also problematizing the gender role balance of the mother artist. The successfulcombination of these roles directly influences the future careers of female artists andwhether they can sustain their work in the arts in general.

An e-Learning Approach to Enhancing the Engineering Students’ Motivation to Study Business English for Work Purposes

An e-Learning Approach to Enhancing the Engineering Students’ Motivation to Study Business English for Work Purposes

Author(s): Elisabeta Simona Catană / Language(s): English / Issue: 02/2018

Keywords: e-learning; business English; communication skills; motivation;

Recognizing the huge role played by e-learning in mastering a foreign language for work purposes, we aim to point out its importance in meeting the engineering students’ needs for communication in English for business and work purposes. We emphasize the necessity of motivating the engineering students to take a blended learning approach, and particularly an e-learning approach, to studying business English to enable them to understand and cope with the culture of companies and multinationals with a view to their future successful career. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of e-learning for enhancing the engineering students’ motivation to develop their knowledge of business English for work purposes in a company or in a multinational and to adequately use the acquired business English vocabulary in specific contexts, in written and verbal discourses, in presentations, simulated meetings and dialogues in the English language courses and seminars in a technical university. We argue for the necessity of focusing on e-learning for enhancing the engineering students’ awareness that developing their knowledge of business English for a career in a company can be a great asset even if their job description mainly includes technical activities such as software or hardware development. Having knowledge of business English would allow the engineering students to better understand the world of companies and their rules of doing business nowadays, enabling them to professionally communicate and make appropriate decisions in a company meeting, in negotiations or in other business contexts. This paper will present: 1) the importance of focusing on e-learning-based seminar activities meant to develop the students’ communication skills in English, their creativity in accomplishing the given tasks, enhancing their motivation to develop their business English vocabulary; 2) the engineering students’ perspective on the importance of e-learning for developing their business English knowledge for a future career and 3) a methodological approach to teaching business English to engineering students based on traditional learning and e-learning.

Keywords: Motherhood; Gender; Careers; Caregiving; Comparative Study;

Making Motherhood Work: How Women Manage Careers and Caregiving by Caitlyn Collins is one of those deeply researched and particularly well-written volumes in the social sciences that will be of equal interest to gender scholars and feminist activists, but also easily accessible to novices. At least this was my experience of the book: I read it in its entirety (all 300 pages with appendices!), from cover to cover, over the course of one long day. Although its main focus is European and American work-family policies—studied comparatively—which is a bit outside of my primary area of interest, I was captivated by Collins’s narrative thread, sophisticated argumentation, and political appeals. Perhaps my own experience of this book was plural: at times I read it as a feminist who cannot but help imagining a better world for women with children; atother times as an anthropologist, stimulated by the rich ethnographic material of the book; and also as a (working) mother, often drawn to compare diverse experiences of motherhood to my own.

Developing Scientific Work Practice in Business Informatics - Digital Support for a Design Science-based Research Project

Author(s): Christian Stary / Language(s): English / Issue: 5/2019

Keywords: scientific work; research practice; research proposal; design science; learning support; social interaction; self-managed learning; cognitive apprenticeship; scaffolding; learning management

When academic students are introduced to scientific work, they need to become familiar with how to select a research topic, to identify research goals, and to structure a research project accordingly. In Business Informatics, research practice is increasingly following a design science approach. In this contribution, we introduce a corresponding digital support scheme. It is based on cognitive apprenticeship and scaffolding to specify the research questions and derive requirements from a problem statement for possible solutions. Learners are supported in a socio-cognitive way, as the set of digital learning-support features comprises peer-to-peer interactions, content co-construction, and a portfolio-like documentation scheme. Context-sensitive (focused) interaction and organizing group work facilitate content co-creation and effective information sharing. They support self-managed scientific skill development while being able to follow structured research procedures.

Nowadays, the ICT is an important part of the 21st century and teacher learning and industry 4.0 challenges must involve technology in their teaching and learning. Previous research on the involvement of technology in the learning process is generally known as TPACK, Technology – Pedagogy – Content - Knowledge. However, the specific objectives of implementing vocational learning are specific to certain occupations. The purpose of this study is to analyse the teaching and learning needs of students in professional vocational education with the revised TPACK new model approach. The study of qualitative methods in the form of document analysis is used to construct a new theoretical conceptual framework. Important findings offered in the concepts of teaching and learning of vocational students were adopted based on work, content, technology, and learning approaches which were conceptualized as TAWOCK.The work as a new domain shows the characteristics of student teaching and learning while the learning approach has shifted from the level of engagement - Pedagogy to the level of cultivation - Andragogy. The study explains that vocational education with the TAWOCK concept is an ideal model for developing depth.

PREDICTING WORK PERFORMANCE AND PROFESSIONAL SATISFACTION THROUGH DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOTIVATION AND SELF-ESTEEM

Author(s): Bianca PELTEA / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: work performance; professional satisfaction; intrinsic motivation; identification motivation; self-esteem;

The purpose of this study was to explore an alternative relationship between motivation and self-esteem regarding their prediction power of work performance and professional satisfaction. In contrast to the dominating view that intrinsic motivation is the main type of motivation that leads to increased levels of work performance, we developed a hypothesis proposing that intrinsic motivation mediates the relationship between identified regulation and work performance, thus showing that motivation by identification is the first in terms of prediction and opportunity of intervention. By a cross-sectional survey among 120 employees from different finance and industry organizations, it has been proven that intrinsic motivation and identification motivation add positive predictive power of job satisfaction beyond the negative predictive power of age and competence. Furthermore, identified regulation has been shown to be predicted by an interaction between gender and the educational level. Implications for practice and directions for future research are discussed.

The paper tackles the impact of the stage performance upon the public, the algorithm through which the theatrical event entered in the captivity of mass manipulation and the development of the dramatic concepts, aiming to decode the implied power relationship between scene and audience, thanks to the evolution of philosophical thinking from genuine scepticism to modern rationalism, from judgment of taste to critical judgment and social activism. Further, in the psychological key, the consequences of the dual division of the show space, the sociological markers in theatre architecture and the pattern of the Wagnerian scenic space were studied, allowing insights into the history of mentalities and into the pattern of art reception.

The Mediating Role of Job Satisfaction in the Relationship Between Quality of Work Life and Turnover: The Moderating Role of Gender

Author(s): Derya Kara,Nihan Potas,Fırat Seyhan / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 3/2020

Keywords: Job satisfaction; Quality of work life; Turnover; Healthcare employees and gender;

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine-using a moderation role of gender- the mediating role of job satisfaction between quality of work life and turnover intention. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from healthcare organizations employees (n = 325) in Ankara. The hypotheses were tested using The Mediation Analysis and Moderated Mediation Analysis. The questionnaire method, which is the primary data collection tool, was applied for the study. Survey data were analyzed using SPSS program. Findings – The mediation analysis showed that the job satisfaction has mediating effect on the relationship between quality of work life and turnover intention of employees. Second, Moderated Mediation Analysis showed that gender moderated the relation between quality of work life-job satisfaction and job satisfaction-turnover intention. When job satisfaction increases, the turnover intention of men is much higher than women. Finally, gender didn’t moderate the relation between the quality of work life and turnover. Discussion – The participation of female employees in the workforce has recently become an important issue. It is important to understand the relationship between the quality of work life and job satisfaction, and its effects on turnover intention, due to the woman's responsibilities regarding home and family. In this context, managers are recommended to make some arrangements in the organization to increase the job satisfaction and quality of life of female employees. With these arrangements, employee turnover intention will decrease and the organization will be more successful.

Narratives on Working Hours: An Analysis of “Pioneer” Brokering Agencies for Live-in Care Work in Germany. In the “gray market” for live-in care work in Germany, brokering agencies are playing an increasingly important role in shaping working conditions. Drawing on six expert interviews with “pioneer” brokering agencies, this article centers on these agencies’ narratives on working hours. The analysis reveals that these agencies’ understanding of working hours is contradictory: working hours are either referred to as a fixed, intersubjectively measurable category or as a subjective phenomenon, leaving scope for divergent opinions. These perspectives are evident in the assumption of an (in)separability of working and leisure time, and in the understanding of leisure time as a personal need or a valid demand. In this context, constructing working hours as a subjective category thus functions as a legitimation narrative for extensive working hours. These findings are connected to the contradictory interpellations of live-in care workers, such as “fictive kin” and “manager of the self”, and to the underlying understandings of work.

HOW INCORPORATING DELIBERATE PRACTICE IN WORK PLACEMENT MAY CONTRIBUTE TO DEVELOPING EXPERTISE IN TRANSLATORS

Author(s): Agata Sadza / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2021

Keywords: translation work placement; translation internship; deliberate practice; translator training; translation expertise;

The article explores some of the ways in which work placement that accompanies or follows academic instruction may contribute to stimulating trainee translators’ professional development. Inspired by general and profession-specific concepts and components of expertise proposed by researchers in the field of cognitive sciences and translation studies as well as her own experience as a translator, translation trainer, and work placement mentor, the author presents some of her observations and preliminary highlights of her ongoing research to emphasise how individualised support for trainees’ conscious effort in the course of work placement in a translation company may help novice translators hone their skills and at the same time assume responsibility for their own development, thus empowering them and setting them on track to become experts. In her considerations, the author refers to the minimal concept of translation expertise propounded by Muñoz Martín (2014) and to the notion of deliberate practice as posited by Ericsson et al. (1993) to propose how deliberate practice may be implemented as one of the significant elements of translation work placement in a student-centred course of learning, where various aspects of the actual workplace setting contribute to increased readiness for conscious effort in trainees. This paper may prove of use to translator trainers as well as work placement mentors/coordinators, both on the part of the academic institution, and within the organisation accepting trainees, when they shape or revise their curricula or work placement agendas.

Intercultural education and intercultural sensitivity of social work students: experiences from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia

Intercultural education and intercultural sensitivity of social work students: experiences from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia

Author(s): Anida Dudić / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: interculturality; intercultural sensitivity; intercultural communication; students; social work

Postulates of social work profession and ethical codes encompass principles commanding that social worker need to possess a knowledge basis on the culture of the user, especially those coming from a different culture. In this context, the acquisition of intercultural competences is one of the primary goals of the social work studies. The conducted research interrogates the extent of intercultural sensitivity of social work students (N= 200). Using quantitative method and Scale of Intercultural Sensitivity (Chen & Starosta, 2000), the following factors were analysed: interaction engagement, respect for cultural differences, interaction confidence, interaction enjoyment and interaction attentiveness. The results of the research have shown that the social work students positively experience cultural diversity, and that they act openly, self-confidently, and tolerantly in interaction with members or other cultures. It has been determined that there is a statistically significant difference in attitudes and behaviour of students previously acquainted with multiculturalism through education, as compared to those students who were not familiar with the content and the importance of this topic. Students who through their education acquired intercultural skills expressed a greater degree of self-confidence in interaction with people from different cultures and saw it as a positive example. Conversely, students who were not previously acquainted with the topic of interculturalism, manifested a lower degree of confidence in interaction with persons from different cultures, they displayed discomfort and were not content with the interactions. This research accentuates the significance of developing intercultural sensitivity with social work students, through initial education to acquire concepts and paradigms necessary for them to become effective practitioners of cultural, racial and linguistically diverse environments.

Social Work and Domestic Violence in Croatia Through a Gendered Lens: Between Power and Precarity

Social Work and Domestic Violence in Croatia Through a Gendered Lens: Between Power and Precarity

Author(s): Jana Kujundžić / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2022

Keywords: social work; domestic abuse; scapegoating; professional judgment; feminism;

This article examines the gender-blind perception of the social work profession in Croatia and its relation to domestic violence cases. In the past few years, the media and the public have routinely expressed outrage at social workers for not preventing severe cases of violence against women and children. The shift from state socialism to capitalism in Croatian society has considerably affected the profession of social work and facilitated the defunding and understaffing of the welfare sector. I argue that a more nuanced, gendered approach is needed in demanding prevention work from social work centres (SWC). Most studies on the causes of burnout in social workers have ignored the feminisation of the profession and the gendered implication of their precarious professional position and responsibility to protect and help the most vulnerable members of society. The perceptions of social work by other experts working with cases of domestic violence and social workers themselves are important to comprehend a bigger picture of professional judgment and attributions of blame. In-depth interviews were conducted with experts working with domestic violence, including the police, judges, prosecutors, social workers, feminist NGO coordinators, and women’s shelter workers. The feminisation of social work and systemic undervaluing of care work contribute to the easy targeting of social workers while leaving the patriarchal institutionalisation unexplored. For this reason, I conclude that social workers would benefit from class and gender solidary with their clients to fight patriarchal biases.

The Impact of Business Intelligence and Analytics Adoption on Decision Making Effectiveness and Managerial Work Performance

Author(s): Luminita Hurbean,Florin Militaru,Mihaela Muntean,Doina Dănăiaţă / Language(s): English / Issue: Special/2023

Keywords: Business Intelligence and Analytics; data-driven culture; decision-making effectiveness; individual work performance;

Business Intelligence and Analytics systems have the capability to enable organizations to better comprehend their business and to increase the quality of managerial decisions, and consequently improve their performance. Recently, organizations have embraced the idea that data becomes a core asset, and this belief also changes the culture of the organization; data and analytics now determine a data-driven culture, which makes way for more effective data-driven decisions. To the best of our knowledge, there are few studies that investigate the effects of BI&A adoption on individual decision-making effectiveness and managerial work performance. This paper aims to contribute to bridging this gap by providing a research model that examines the relationship between BI&A adoption and manager’s decision-making effectiveness and then his individual work performance. The research model also theorizes that a data-driven culture promotes the BI&A adoption in the organization. Using specific control variables, we also expect to observe differences between different departments and managerial positions, which will provide practical implications for companies that work on BI&A adoption.

Employer’s Liability in Serbia for Damage Caused by Work Injury: The Case of Professional Athletes

Author(s): Mila Petrović / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: safety and health at work; injury at work; employer’s liability; professional athletes; sport; Republic of Serbia

The right to safety and health at work is one of the fundamental human rights at work, which is protected by the highest international and national legal instruments. In Serbian law, such a right is protected, firstly, by the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia itself and then, further, through the Labour Law and the Law on Safety and Health, whose norms address this issue more thoroughly. These norms are embodied first and foremost in certain obligations of employers, with the aim of ensuring safety and health at work primarily for their employees. In cases where the employer fails to provide a safe and healthy work environment, or even when an injury happens despite everything in this process being done correctly, the question of the employer’s liability for the damage which was caused at work arises. This paper provides an analysis of this issue, with emphasis on the issue of liability for the damage thus caused to the athletes with an employee status.
