Text mining in practice: exploring patterns in text collections of remote work job offers

Author(s): Karolina KULIGOWSKA,Mirosława Lasek / Language(s): English / Issue: 30/2013

Keywords: text mining; text analytics; clustering; concept linking; remote work; telecommuting

The aim of this paper is to give an insight into text mining techniques in the context of unstructured text collections of location independent job offers. In order to extract useful information, uncover interesting patterns and features of remote work, we analyze the five most popular and most visited websites containing job offers. We examine clusters of remote job offers, the keywords describing those clusters, as well as the linkages between strongly associated terms describing mobile work offers. It is interesting to observe the maturity of the text mining tools which have broadened their applications to new research topics and have become suitable to explore new phenomena.

Sociological interpretations of data on the aggregate capital of regional population (work experience abroad, relation to labour migration ...)

Sociological interpretations of data on the aggregate capital of regional population (work experience abroad, relation to labour migration ...)

Author(s): Eduards Vanags,Olga Volkova,Vladimir Menshikov / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2013

Keywords: aggregate capital; resource capitalization; labour migration; life success

In the present article, the authors continue their sociological interpretations of the empiric data obtained in the research project “Aggregate Capital, Its Structure and Relation to Labour Migration” (2012). The following hypothesis has been proved: a higher predisposition for the labour migration is more typical for economically active region’s inhabitants with fairly high amounts of some indicators of the aggregate capital, especially physical capital, but with a comparatively lower amount of cultural capital, which could transform into human capital and further into economic capital in Latgale or Latvia. An in-depth analysis of the factors of life success has revealed that, in general, our respondents tend to assign the lead role not to the personal competitive characteristics (resources) but rather to the specificity of the social environment: an explanation of life success by means of a set of variables that, on the whole, describe it as a socio-political innovation with criminal tendencies (political corruption) is the most spread one.

Theoretical perspectives upon the return to work of cancer patients: The difficult path of integration in the organization

Author(s): Radu-Ioan Popa / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2015

Keywords: Cancer patients; Return to work; Integration.

The present article follows an in-depth analysis of several relevant articles and major findings concerning the return to work of cancer patients, in various situations, from a manager and patient point of view, putting into discussion the effects and consequences of different factors that may influence the well-being of the patient at work and impact the organizational life. The concepts of returning to work and integration are scarcely analysed throughout the scholarly literature in the case of employees diagnosed with cancer, due to several reasons presented in the paper: from the complex topic of investigation that many studies fail to approach in terms of confidentiality, technical, ethical and moral grounds to the specific and difficult apparatus for research in the case of an even more complex, multiple instances and personalized manifestation long-term illness. In conclusion, the general framework solicits for a more integrated model of research and future multi-facet schemes for interventions, considering that there is a general consensus focusing on the need for connecting the health services with the employee and employer level, alongside stakeholders' active participation.

A Case Analysis on the Adequacy of Work-Life Balance Practices in UK Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises

Author(s): Babatunde Akanji / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2017

Keywords: UK SMEs; work-life balance; convenience supermarkets; low staff retention; turnover intentions

Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine whether work-life balance (WLB) practices are satisfactorily provided in UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the impact of the availability of these work-life policies on turnover intentions. A review of extant literature reveals scarce knowledge in this area of research and this study presents a rudimentary effort to fill this gap.Research Design & Methods: Using qualitative design, the data set comprised of in-depth interviews with thirty-six employees working in small and medium-sized UK convenience stores and supermarkets with less than ninety employees.Findings: Informal nature of human resource management policies emerged from the findings as one of the constraining forces impeding work-life agendas in SMEs and causing low staff retention in UK. Although other themes were found to contribute to retention challenges, however, these additional reasons were not independent, but all considered integrated.Implications & Recommendations: Consequently, the practical implication of devising ways to overcome WLB and retention deficiencies in this context were also explored.Contribution & Value Added: The originality of this work lies in studying the importance of WLB practices to some of these grass root businesses that make up a large proportion of the economy in the UK. As the limitation of this study is that it is wholly qualitative in nature, it is suggested that future research should rely on quantitative designs that provides more internally valid tests via computational techniques.

Author(s): Valon Brahimi / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2018

Keywords: Execution; Order for community service work; Region of Mitrovica; Period 2012-2016; Kosovo Probation Service;

The sentence an order for community service work is one of the alternative punishments that is foreseen in the criminal law of the Republic of Kosovo. As such, this kind of alternative sentence by Kosovo courts in the Mitrovica region in recent years has been largely applied, mainly to persons who have committed minor offenses. This kind of alternative punishment manifests many positive sides and is considered highly progressive punishment variants. Through this punishment the responsibility of the convicted person is increased to a higher degree, his active participation in the execution of this punishment is ensured, and the compensation of the damage and the victim is largely ensured. In this paper I have endeavored to provide valuable data regarding the execution of order for community service work in the region of Mitrovica. Within this paper, besides the volume, dynamics of the order for community service work, we have also touched some personal characteristics of persons to whom this measure was applied. This research has been conducted in the region of Mitrovica (in the territory of the Basic Court of Mitrovica) and includes the period from 2012-2016. For the purpose of providing a more accurate results about this issue, the data of the Basic Court in Mitrovica and the data of the Probation Service of Kosovo - the regional unit in Mitrovica have been analyzed.

Didactic Tasks as a Factor of Including Students with Mild Intellectual Disability into the Mainstream of Lesson Work in a General Access School

Author(s): Zenon Gajdzica / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2019

Keywords: mainstream of lesson work;student with mild intellectual disability;questions and orders

The mainstream category is a constitutive element of the traditionally understood inclusive education (the one based on the reconstruction of special needs education). Most authors of definitions formulated in the early stages of the development of inclusive education theory refer to this category. The presence of a student with (intellectual) disability in the mainstream of lesson work may be viewed in physical, social and cognitive terms. The indicators of the last one are, among others, the ability to provide answers to questions and follow instructions directed to all the students in the class. The aim of this study is to present results of research regarding this issue. While accumulating the data, the questionnaire technique was used, addressed to teachers of general access classes working with students with mild intellectual disability. The presented results are a part of a wider research project concerning the educational situation of this group of students in general access school. The study was conducted in three phases (in years: 2004, 2009, 2014) on the group of 450 teachers (150 teachers in each instalment).

COMPARATIVE INTERPRETATIVE ANALYSIS OF DAVID MANCINI'S WORK SUITE FOR SOLO DRUMSET AND PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

Author(s): CONSTANTIN STAVRAT / Language(s): English / Issue: 19+20/2020

Keywords: percussion ensemble; jazz; comparative analysis;

The endless possibilities of expression that jazz has developed over the last hundreds of years could not only influence the composers, but also the performers who dedicated themselves to the fascinating and complex field of percussion. One of the percussion players who has been influenced by this genre is David Mancini, whose conposition I chose for comparative analysis - Suite for solo drum and percussion ensemble in the interpretation of two percussion ensembles Vibraslap and Guiro, whose activity was perpetuated due to enthusiasm and the professionalism of the two mentors of the respective groups, professors Marian Vaida and Bedo Gabor, both perfected within the percussion class of the Conservatory of Music ”George Enescu” in Iasi Romania, founded and led for more than half a century by the renowned professor Florian Simion. Two totally different interpretations of David Mancini's work - Suite for solo drums and percussion ensemble, each with a few moments of success, but also with the need to perfect many elements of technique and interpretive design.

Welfare and Basic Income: Theoretical Implication in The Slemrod / Work-Leisure Model, Graphical Interpretation

Author(s): Ivaylo Beev,Yanko Hristozov / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: Basic income; Slemrod; Robotic-taxation; Welfare

The present study addresses the problem of basic income (BI), in its two varieties, as universal BI (UnBI) and as unconditional BI (UBI), with a view to the effect on individuals' well-being. For this purpose, Slemrod's general model was adapted and a graphical interpretation based on the standard leisure-time model was made. The use of the specific toolkit of ordinal utility theory makes it possible to identify an unexpected "externalities" - the emergence of a personal and social dilemma that generates crowding out-effect, which is able to eliminate the beneficial effects on the well-being of the introduction of BI into any of its forms, whether universal or unconditional. In this context, a proposal has been made (de lege ferenda), on the adaptation of the structure of the tax system that must incorporate the taxation of robotic labor: to successfully implement the BI conception.

A Self-determined Profession? Perceived Work Conditions and the Satisfaction Paradox among Czech Academic Faculty

A Self-determined Profession? Perceived Work Conditions and the Satisfaction Paradox among Czech Academic Faculty

Author(s): Jiří Mudrák,Kateřina Zábrodská,Kateřina Machovcová / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2020

Keywords: quality of work life; academic staff; job satisfaction; higher education; public universities; job demands; job resources

While the Czech academic profession faces a range of challenges and problems, quantitative surveys indicate a relatively high level of high job satisfaction among academic faculty. This article addresses this ‘satisfaction paradox’ by exploring the perceived work conditions of Czech academics based on their own reports. The data for this study included academics’ (N = 1202) qualitative responses to open-ended questions regarding the main problems and benefits of their current academic work and workplace. Content analysis was used to categorise the respondents’ answers. Academics reported heavy workloads (26.5% of participants), a lack of financial resources (26.3%), poorquality leadership (23.7%), excessive administration (16.3%), and job insecurity (10.9%) as the most problematic aspects of their workplaces. In contrast, academics reported that good social relationships in the workplace (46.3%), autonomy of academic work (41.8%), personal fulfilment (28.9%), and work/contact with students (25.3%) were the aspects of their workplaces they valued most. These positive features appear to be prevalent, as most (80%) academics reported overall satisfaction with their work. The authors draw on job demands–resources theory to suggest that the relatively high level of satisfaction is due to (still) high levels of key job resources that support the intrinsic motivation of academics despite an environment that can be considered suboptimal in some aspects. They also point to inequalities in job demands and job resources between subgroups of academics and highlight key systemic issues that should be addressed to improve the work conditions at Czech public higher education institutions.

Narrative Child Protection in Hungary. The Importance of Knowing the History of the Families in Need in the Social Work with Children

Author(s): Andrea Rácz,Ernő Bogács / Language(s): English / Issue: 10/2020

Keywords: knowledge; specificities of assistance; family concept, child protection; Hungarian child protection system;

The study is reflecting on the nature and features of social work with families with children, attempting to discuss social work as assistance and apprehension and to detect whether there is any causal link between the efficiency of social work and the narrative approach and the “unstoried”, “faceless” condition of the families. We argue that professional attitude aimed at providing child protection support is not possible without knowing the story of families with children. Without a helping attitude, no real social work is possible, and thus the client remains invisible and faceless in the process of child welfare or child protection interventions. Besides the actual situations of story-based intervention in social work (micro level), narrativity is also important for the transparent and adequate functioning of the system (mezzo level); moreover, it can become a factor of paradigm shift in social and political discourse on social work and its target groups (macro level). The study is based on the research entitled Child Protection Trends Supporting Children’s Well-Being carried out within the Research Scholarship granted by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2017–2020). The research focused on the family concept of child protection professionals and their views of the clients that can be deducted from this concept. The research also examines the notion and functions of the family from the viewpoint of children, young people and their parents as well as the professional attitudes and interventions determined by these perceptions. Research results show that due to the diversity and complexity of the problems of families in the purview of the child protection system one cannot reflect on professional solutions along types of problems. Successful functioning and efficient child protection rely rather on revealing individual and specific needs. All this indicates that child welfare and child protection work is possible only if built on personal stories.

THE ROLE OF JOB CRAFTING IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP AND HAPPINESS AT WORK: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS

THE ROLE OF JOB CRAFTING IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP AND HAPPINESS AT WORK: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS

Author(s): Mohammed Yasin Ghadi,Khaled Salameh Almanaga’h / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: empowering leadership; job crafting; task crafting; relationship crafting; happiness at work;

The purpose of this study is to examine a hypothesized model investigating the impact of empowering leadership on happiness at work through the mediating role of job crafting. A translated pre-determined survey on a sample of Jordanian academics was used. A total of 325 usable returns were collected for the analysis (i.e. a response rate of 84.6 percent). Structural equation model (SEM) using AMOS was implemented to obtain the best-fit model and to determine the role of job crafting as a potential mediator between empowering leadership and happiness at work. The results indicated no direct statistical effect for empowering leadership on happiness at work with an estimated value of 0.17 and a standard error of 0.073. The results also show that there was a significant statistical effect for empowering leadership on crafting and this effect was high with a value of 0.479 and a standard error of 0.040. Finally, the results revealed a direct effect for empowering leadership on happiness at work through the mediating role of job crafting. The study recommended that it is necessary for universities to offer new programs and workshops that improve the behaviors of empowering leadership in light of work conditions at various levels and to motivate job crafting to increase levels of happiness at work.

The Legal Nature of Remuneration for Periods of Release From the Obligation to Perform Work for Trade Union Activists

Author(s): Małgorzata Mędrala / Language(s): English / Issue: 95/2021

Keywords: trade union activist;remuneration;employer; gainful work; proportionality

In this article the Author analizes the issue of legal character of trade union activists released from work, covered by employers. The Author underlines the latest extension of subjective rights in this matter by Polish legislator to other than an employee persons who perform gainful work. In her opinion the remuneration for work, paid by employers at abovementioned basis may be qualified as work-related benefits of a social (even public) nature. In her opinion the current regulations in this matter are questionable in the light of the principle of the independence of trade unions and the principle of proportionality.

The Impact of Emotional Intelligence on Work Performance: Perceptions and Reflections from Academics in Malaysian Higher Education Obitat endiaest que

Author(s): Ratneswary Rasiah,Jason J. Turner,Yew Foo Ho / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2019

Keywords: Human Capital; Higher Education; Emotional Intelligence; 4th Industrial Revolution;

Using the ‘emotional competence framework’ developed by Goleman (1998), this research aims to clarify the role that identified antecedents of emotional intelligence play on academics’ work performance. Specifically, the research will examine the relationships between self-management, self-awareness, relationship management and social awareness and work performance in higher education. The research comes as a response to the existing literature, which predominantly examines university work performance and employability from a student perspective. This perspective is usually in the context of university-led initiatives and the ability of these initiatives to engender the employability skills students require for a job and the more generic discussion surrounding how prepared graduates feel for a disruptive employment market. Examining academics’ perspectives gives some initial insight into the skill sets that academics feel they are developing in the university environment and the role that these skills play in academic performance and ultimately in their contribution to the knowledge economy. In an increasingly competitive market where workers have to compete against each other as well as the technological alternatives to human capital, namely, automation, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), academic and practitioner assessments of an individual’s work-readiness has gathered momentum. A gap in the literature is apparent in the perspectives of individuals who are teaching those employability skills, specifically, whether these individuals feel that those skills that are less easily automatable are being appropriately developed in their skill set. Using a survey with 103 academics from a university in Malaysia, the research addresses an identified gap in the literature around emotional intelligence and the labor market. The research also informs the wider literature on work performance and advances research in the area of employability in the context of the 4th industrial revolution.

Trauma and Social Work in South Africa, Need for a Comprehensive Trauma Intervention Model for Social Workers

Author(s): Tessa van Wijk,Ngenisiwe Henrietta Ntombela,Vincent Mabvurira / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2021

Keywords: Trauma; Trauma Intervention; Social Work; South Africa;

A significant proportion of South Africans are exposed to traumatic life experiences annually. The trauma is exacerbated by high crime rate which ranges from murder, violence, house breaking and theft. The trauma victims end up in the hands of social workers who are ill prepared to deal with such clients. The motivation for this study was built on assessments that indicated at the time of the study that social work students in South Africa receive little or no training on trauma and trauma intervention. The purpose of this literature study was to draw together relevant knowledge on trauma in South Africa, trauma intervention and the importance of trauma intervention training for social workers in South Africa. Articles reviewed were identified through search engines such as Google Scholar, JSTOR, ProQuest, EBSCOHost, Boloka-NWU Institutional Repository (NWUIR), Scopus, Science Direct and Web of Science were the databases and search engines utilized in the search. The inclusion criteria that were used to help identify relevant and recent studies using key words regarding the topic of trauma, were chapters in books; conference proceedings; full-text journal articles and higher degree papers. The literature consulted exposes how South Africans are exposed to traumatic life events and provided a deeper understanding of the problem of trauma and trauma intervention. The literature study also clarified why it is critical to have a trauma intervention model for social workers in South Africa and provided guidelines for the development of the trauma intervention manual.

Influence Work, Resistance, and Educational Life-Worlds: Quintilian’s [Marcus Fabius Quintilianus] (35-95 CE) Analysis of Roman Oratory as an Instructive Ethnohistorical Resource and Conceptual Precursor of Symbolic Interactionist Scholarship

Despite the striking affinities of classical Greek and Latin rhetoric with the pragmatist/interactionist analysis of the situated negotiation of reality and its profound relevance for the analysis of human group life more generally, few contemporary social scientists are aware of the exceptionally astute analyses of persuasive interchange developed by Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian. Having considered the analyses of rhetoric developed by Aristotle (384-322 BCE) and Cicero (106-43 BCE) in interactionist terms (Prus 2007a; 2010), the present paper examines Quintilian’s (35-95 CE) contributions to the study of persuasive interchange more specifically and the nature of human knowing and acting more generally. Focusing on the education and practices of orators (rhetoricians), Quintilian (a practitioner as well as a distinctively thorough instructor of the craft) provides one of the most sustained, most systematic analyses of influence work and resistance to be found in the literature. Following an overview of Quintilian’s “ethnohistorical” account of Roman oratory, this paper concludes by drawing conceptual parallels between Quintilian’s analysis of influence work and the broader, transcontextual features of symbolic interactionist scholarship (Mead 1934; Blumer 1969; Prus 1996; 1997; 1999; Prus and Grills 2003). This includes “generic social processes” such as: acquiring perspectives, attending to identity, being involved, doing activity, engaging in persuasive interchange, developing relationships, experiencing emotionality, attaining linguistic fluency, and participating in collective events. Offering a great many departure points for comparative analysis, as well as ethnographic examinations of the influence process, Quintilian’s analysis is particularly instructive as he addresses these and related aspects of human knowing, acting, and interchange in highly direct, articulate, and detailed ways. Acknowledging the conceptual, methodological, and analytic affinities of The Institutio Oratoria of Quintilian with symbolic interactionism, an epilogue, Quintilian as an Intellectual Precursor to American Pragmatist Thought and the Interactionist Study of Human Group Life, addresses the relative lack of attention given to classical Greek and Latin scholarship by the American pragmatists and their intellectual progeny, as well as the importance of maintaining a more sustained transcontextual and transhistorical focus on the study of human knowing, acting, and interchange.

Author(s): Mustafa Daşkin,Şerif Baldiran,Kenan Pala / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: Cooks; Career Satisfaction; Intrinsic Motivation; Work Engagement; Role Overload;

Purpose – This empirical study aimed to examine how intrinsic motivation, perceived roleoverload, and job engagement of Turkish chefs are affected by career satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of chefs yielded a total of 211 useable questionnaires for this survey. The SPSSAMOS statistical tool was used to test the proposed correlations using the SEM method. Findings – Results based on SEM results reveal that career satisfaction has a positive impact on cooks’ intrinsic motivation and work engagement. However, career satisfaction did not have a significant negative effect on their perception of role overload. Discussion – This paper provides implications for the sector in terms of understanding the link among career satisfaction, intrinsic motivation, and work engagement for cooks. Also, this study offers practical advice on how to use good management techniques and enhance organizational outcomes in contexts where people operate in the culinary industry. The current study, which looks at previously unresearched impacts and correlations, theoretically adds to the body of knowledge on hospitality management.
