BIZARRE ACADEMISM AND SCIENCE IN SLOVENIA: ELEMENTS FOR ANTHROPOLOGICAL STUDY OF

Bizarre Academism and Science in Slovenia: Elements for Anthropological Study of Postsocialism and Transition

Author(s): Vlado Kotnik / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: anthropology; postsocialism; transition; academism; Slovenia

This article addresses some of the aspects the academic sphere, science and intellectual culture under postsocialism offer for the understanding of transition issues in contemporary Slovenia. It starts with the surprise that has been caused by the bizarre commodification and domestication of anthropology in Slovenia, particularly at Slovenian universities, after 1990s, and tries to reflect social reception, institutional organization and academic status of anthropology in this country. Furthermore, through a specific case study of a violent debate which recently took place in Slovenia concerning the reasons for the absence of Slovenian universities on the notorious list of top 500 world universities, it tries to illustrate the essence of how academic spheres in transitional societies function. The conclusion presents some elements of social hypocrisy and discrepancy. It reveals certain facts that have taken place within the last few years, and thus helps us understand the contribution of the Slovenian state administration for science to the process of systematic transformation of this autonomous social domain of highly intellectual work into a turbo-neoliberal enterprise of wageworkers, academic lumpenproletarians, anti-intellectual jobbers, profiteers and money-spinners.

The histro-graphical and cultural-historical meta-narrative on ottoman Bosnia

Historijski i kulturnopovijesni metanarativi o Osmanskoj Bosni

Author(s): Enver Kazaz / Language(s): Bosnian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: BiH; Bosnia; meta-narrative; Ottoman rule; cultural; historical; histro-graphical; identity;

This research paper proposed the thesis that the model of cultural-historical identity construction in B&H was continually under ideological influence absorbing a meta-narrative system produced in histro-graphical science. In creating the historical image of the Ottoman rule in B&H this meta-narrative system developed a Manichean matrix of knowledge. Ottoman-phobic and Ottomanphylous meta-narratives absorb and remodel different ideological configurations and construct with them corresponding historical monologue concepts. In the article this concept is analyzed from the perspective of Hayden White and Dominic La Capare and there is an attempt to show how using its meta-narrative bases as interpretation strategies producing an image of past reality in the histro-graphical narrative negates the manifoldness and hybridism of identity in Ottoman Bosnia. By analyzing the order of identity in Ottoman Bosnia from a theoretical perspective a hierarchy of identities derived from perspective Ottoman-concentricity and Islam-concentricity was established, and from that relation all other identities became peripheral and marginal. So Bosnia won the status of inner otherness, which in the periphery of the empire, possesses the inner symbol of the outside enemy in the Christian community. Everyday culture and praxis of identity hybridism negate the Ottoman-phobic Islam-phylous meta-narrative, and the research paper derived from examples of Bogdanovich’s Annals of Kreševo Monastery with the identity point of view showing that in everyday life praxis the rights from the famous Ahdnama were negated and suspended, and afterwards, from ideological base of milet system. The conclusion is that the chronicles of the Bosnian Franciscans are like a model of history of quotidian life in one peripheral, marginal and discriminating identity in the Ottoman Empire and were attempting to establish a new model of culturalhistorical knowledge in B&H.

Practising Philology and “Producing Presence”: Towards the Materialistic Recovery of the Humanities

Praktykowanie filologii, wytwarzanie obecności: w stronę materialistycznego odzyskiwania humanistyki

Author(s): Jakub Skurtys / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: philosophy of presence; H.U. Gumbrecht; methodology of the humanities; materiality of communication

In the presented paper the author attempts to examine the philosophical concepts of Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht and portrays them as useful for a new model of the humanities. The author analyzes some of Gumbrecht’s writings on the condition and future of the philological disciplines. Moreover, he argues that the separation and dismissal of the elitist overtonesof Gumbrecht’s thought from the core of his ideas about the “production of presence,”“reading for moods” and “powers of philology” is crucial if one is looking for an answer to the question about what chances for philology brings the epistemological approach based on the metaphysics of presence, which reclaims the eventness of the aesthetic experience.

Against Autonomy. Celebrity Authors and an Attempt to Revise the Illusio of Literature

Przeciw autonomii. Pisarze-celebryci i próba rewizji illusio literatury

Author(s): Dominik Antonik / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: celebrity authors; literary field; economy of literature; sociology of literature; cultural economics; Pierre Bourdieu

The article deals with Polish contemporary celebrity authors, who are treated as a complex phenomenon forming a new model of literary production and consumption. In that newfield of cultural production literature emerges in complex relations between the author and his image, text, media, economy, marketing, audience, general presence of the author and his work in the public space, and other varied non-textual forms of the presence of literature. The functioning of celebrity authors on such a great scale is enabled by the more and more complex relationship between fields of literature, media, and economy, which approach eachother and became more porous in order to easily exchange different forms of capital. The article considers these new conditions of cultural production in the context of a changing literary illusio. The proposed model of relational literary culture has been derived fromand contrasted with the dominating approach in academic criticism, based on Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of autonomy. In this criticised approach the phenomenon of celebrity authors is placed on the map of polarized fields of culture and economy and condemnedas an inauthentic and simple market invention. The author argues that literature can nolonger be considered as a field of struggle between high cultural value and economic capital.

US'S CUBAN POLICY IN THE CONTEXT OF CONSTRUCTIVISM

KONSTRÜKTİVİZM BAĞLAMINDA ABD’NİN KÜBA POLİTİKASI

Author(s): İlker Aral Güngör / Language(s): Turkish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: United States; Cuba; international relations; constructivism;

Author(s): Nicolaj D. Russev / Language(s): Russian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: left bank of the Lower Danube; 60s. 20th century; childhood environment; colouring; amulets; martenitsa; sarma; boys’ games; arshitsi; small knives; Turkic traditions

The author addresses artifacts of traditional culture shared by the Bulgarians from the left bank of the Lower Danube in 1960s. He reviews some peculiarities of this environment, which gradually introduced children to the adult world. These were the things that protected the growing generation from the harm and secured their health and wellbeing. The author describes the differently colored amulets (martenitsa) and wedding frippery (sarma). Special attention is paid to boys’ games, such as dice (arshitsi) and knives, which reflected some centennial values of the Turkic nomads. Particularly, this concerns analogous use of cold weapons and their transmission from generation to generation.

The postmodern image of the world. Ontology of the operational knowledge as a vision of the postmodern world

Ponowoczesny obraz świata. Ontologia wiedzy operacyjnej jako wizja świata ponowoczesnego

Author(s): Anna Pałubicka / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: image of the world; operational knowledge; procedural ontology; theoretical knowledge; vision of the world

The articles attempts to depict ontology of the procedural knowledge that expresses a new vision of the postmodern world. The author declares that nowadays the rationality in making decisions by a subject is limited to adopting the conformist attitude towards the behavioral regulations imposed on him or her. Accordingly the areas of freedom for a subject shrink. In such situation philosophy can be a useful field of reflection insofar as it offers a postmodern vision of the world taking into consideration the sensibility of a subject which is shaped by postmodern practices.

Geographies of in / mobility: An intersectional and multiscalar analysis of Colombian migration

Geografías de la in/movilidad: Un análisis interseccional y multiescalar de la migración colombiana

Author(s): Paula Medina García / Language(s): Spanish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Afro-descendant women; intersectionality; multiscalarity; im/mobility; migrant-agent; experience; trajectories; regulatory technologies; internal migration; urban spaces;

Drawing from a geographical-political intersectional approach, this work addresses the multiple trajectories of mobility lived by Afro-descendant women of the Colombian Pacific region. Based upon a trialectic – social, temporal, and spatial – conception of power relations, it questions the theoretical and analytical implications of many of the migration and forced migration studies regarding the migrant agency, the spatialities of movement, and the multidimensionality of internal migration. Without overlooking the relational character of force contexts, agency and regulatory technologies of movement, it provides a methodological framework by which we can analyze the narrativization of situated experiences. By doing so, it precedes the importance of the mobile subject-agent, the multiscalarity of action and the political character of mobility itself.

Literary Studies, History and Popular Culture – the Spaces of Convergence. Introduction

Author(s): Natalia Lemann / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Literary studies;historio-graphia;popculture;(post)modern historical novels;alternate histories;historical fantasy;new forms of communication

The aim of the article is to juxtapose literary studies, literature and history as neighboring branches of humanistic knowledge. The author compares the methodologies of history and literary studies in the field of narrativity, and, in accordance with Hayden White, comprehends history as a type of fiction, historio-graphia, and literary artifact. In this optics historiography and literary studies are diagnosed as forming a sisterhood relationship. When the opportunity arises it is shown that the idea of postmodern history is no novelty, since up until the decline of the XVIIIth century history and literary studies have not been opposite at all. Actually, the way of thinking about history as an (literary) art has a splendid tradition rooted in antiquity. In the scope of Braudel`s history of the “longue durée” it is the model of history as a (hard) science separated from literary studies as an art and ideographical science that constitutes a methodological aberration. Comparative analysis leads to the conclusion, that both these “scientific” branches developed almost imultaneously (cf. feminism, gender, postcolonialism, posthumanism, animal studies). Moreover literary genres, such as the (post)modern historical novels, alternate histories or historical fantasy, opened the space of convergence between history and the literary, because of mutual fluctuation and the “parasiting” of ideas, topics and poetics. The participation of popular culture makes the history and literary studies more transgressive, widely open for contemporary forms of communication and more hearable. In this scope, the author presents historical game books, facebook`s historical events, transmedia historical stories.

“Daring Imagination Indispensable to A Socialist Writer”

„Śmiałość wyobraźni nieodzowna socjalistycznemu pisarzowi”

Author(s): Karolina Kulpa / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: contestation; utopia; avant-garde; Bruno Jasieński; I Burn Paris; imagination

This article attempts to capture the contestative dimension of Bruno Jasieński’s prose works. More precisely, the author is interested in the role of political imagination, which is revealed not only in the space of the presented world, but also results directly from the writer’s own creative attitude. The novel „I Burn Paris” is read as one of the versions of avant-garde prose and as a text that in a non-obvious way draws attention to the limited possibilities of the language of literature and the ways of influencing, by unmaskingly creating alternative, utopian visions of reality.

Seismographs of culture. Prolegomena

Author(s): Anna Kobylińska,Maciej Falski / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: architecture; architects; Habsburg empire; cultural biography; social space

The article demonstrates the relevance that research into professional biographies can have for understanding cultural and social change. By analysing the biographies of architects: their backgrounds, educational paths, professional contacts, as well as their entire professional milieu, it is possible to better recognise the causes and course of profound social, political or even civilisational changes in the Habsburg monarchy, during the crucial period of its existence and disintegration. It was the architects who found ways of creating space that responded to changing perceptions and expectations, both individual and collective, tangibly co-creating social space. Coming from different regions of the monarchy, architects practised their profession within the framework of an imperial state whose administrative apparatus and legal system had to be, in principle, constantly adapted to a dynamic and extremely diverse socio-cultural reality. It was made up of many ethnoses, religions, languages and even geophysical factors (always, after all, influencing the living conditions of specific communities). Authors believe that their biographies are - in themselves - already an important carrier of meanings and knowledge about the conditions of everyday life and the mentality of the people living at the time.

Ideas and institutions

Idee i instytucje

Author(s): Maciej Kassner / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: ideas; institutions; political science; ontology; interpretations; Nevil Johnson

The article reexamines the notion of political science proposed by Nevil Johnson. According to Johnson, ideas and institutions are the fundamental concepts of political analysis. Studying politics explores how a given community solved the problem of institutionalising political order. Thus political thinking is always normative and contextual. Nevil Johnson criticises the mainstream vision of empirical political science as a discipline concerned mainly with formulating and testing hypotheses. In his view, this vision assumes false ontology based on a mistaken belief that the domain of politics is subject to general laws. From a conservative point of view, this constitutes a case of metaphysical madness, a tendency to replace the knowledge of concrete circumstances with abstract principles. Although Johnson’s critique of mainstream political science is not without merit, the article remains sceptical about prospects for formulating a general ontology of political experience. It suggests, instead, adopting a hermeneutical approach to understanding different ontological visions.

STRANGER IN LEGAL PRACTICE. ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE CITY OF OPAVA BETWEEN 1643–1670

CIZINEC V PRÁVNÍ PRAXI. NA PŘÍKLADU KNÍŽECÍHO MĚSTA OPAVY MEZI LETY 1643–1670

Author(s): Viktorie Ghiberti / Language(s): Czech / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Stranger; Opava; 1643-1670; history of law; foreigner in urban society;

Abychom čtenářům usnadnili orientaci a zároveň zvýraznili vývoj argumentu, předkládáme v následujících odstavcích stručné shrnutí celé kapitoly. Teprve poté budou následovat jednotlivé podkapitoly a jejich části, kde poskytneme podrobné analýzy a argumentační síť výkladu.
