„Wio Bury do góry“. The secrets of the bandit profession in „Chronography or the Chronicle of Żywiec” by Andrzej Komoniecki

„Wio Bury do góry”. Tajniki zbójeckiego rzemiosła w „Chronografii albo Dziejopisie żywieckim” Andrzeja Komonieckiego

Author(s): Beata Stuchlik-Surowiak / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Andrzej Komoniecki; banditry; Żywiec; chronicle

The article discusses the issue of bandit activity in the Żywiec region in 17th and 18th century. The main source of information regarding that topic is „Chronography or the Chronicle of Żywiec” by Andrzej Komoniecki, which documented the history of Żywiec and its vicinity between 1400–1728. This singularly fascinating source text mentions a plethora of executions of local bandits, while the author does not shy away from detailed descriptions of torture and death penalty. The chronicle confirms that, due to the geographical location of Żywiec (the proximity of the mountains), bandit activity constituted a serious issues – hordes of bandits robbed houses, manors and parsonages, as well as traveling merchants, sparing no one who dared oppose them. On the other hand, many inhabitants of Żywiec assisted the bandits and – according to the sources – did so not only out of fear. On the contrary, the courage, resilience and lack of the fear of death that characterized the bandits made them more relatable to the rest of the populace. Those mechanisms, in turn, facilitated the emergence of the myth of the “noble bandit.”

Rosyjscy dziennikarze: radykalizacja przestrzeni wirtualnej

Journalism in Russia faces not only a problem of co-existence with an authoritarian re¬gime. Intense changes within distribution of information (growth of popularity of social media, common access to video and sound recording devices, problem of fact-checking) lead to – in conditions of the present political situation – forming of specific strategies in the journalists’ behavior in the visual space, so that arises the matter of characteristic fea¬tures of alterations within the following relations: employee–employer, journalist–receiver, journalist–journalist, journalist–state

When Did Dreams Cease to Be Signs from Heaven? Romantic Onirism at the ‘Midday of the Century’

Kiedy sny przestały być znakami z nieba? Hermeneutyka oniryczna w „południe wieku”

Author(s): Ewa Hoffmann-Piotrowska / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: romantic onirism; Wiktor Szokalski; Seweryn Goszczyński; romantic epistemology; dreams hermeneutics

The article touches upon an intriguing problem of the transition between a romanticculture that values specifi c spiritual ways of knowing and a romantic way of thinking aboutreality. The article about Goszczyński’s dreams quoted here in the context of Wiktor Szokalski’sconsiderations, became a pretext to ask why and when the manifestations of the human spiritactivity were reduced to psychophysiological phenomena and stripped of the metaphysicalmeanings granted to them by the Romantics. When this was done, a particular break separatedthe romantic whole of spirit and matter. The work of a physiologist with romantic biographicalroots – Wiktor Szokalski – was chosen not as a subject of refl ection in the article. In his writings, the fundamental existential concerns of the ‘midday of the century’ are manifest. These refl ectionsare so signifi cant that, perhaps somewhere here, in the sixties of the nineteenth century, one canlocate the beginning of a new anthropology, conditioning our modernity.

Anthropological stories of Janusz Dunin’s bibliology

Antropologiczne wątki bibliologii Janusza Dunina

Author(s): Jacek Ladorucki / Language(s): English,Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: anthropological stories;Janusz Dunin’s bibliology

The article refers to the modern theory of books and bibliology relationships with other areas. In a number of his scientific publications we can find the expressions of diversity research. Dunin traces culture books and trying to attempt to find their reflection of human behaviour. The outline of anthropological theory proposed by Dunin’s book is a search for an interesting example of the borders of contemporary book science research and voice in the debate about the identity of the science of book.

Author(s): Katarzyna Ossowska-Kulińska / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: reportage;pilgrimage;account

Perygrynacja do Ziemi Swiętej, Syrii i Egiptu written by Mikolaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł also known as Orphan is one of the most famous and commonly reviewed from the collection of the Old Polish pilgrimages. His vivid description of pilgrimage appeals to contemporary reader. While describing the itinerary of pilgrimage, he was focused on contemporary issues e.g. social interactions, economy or surrounding nature which was an innovative approach. Orphan managed to collect information not only about the Holy Land but also about local residents and their customs while following the route described by Guidem from Jerusalem. Artefact created by Orphan can be associated with work of contemporary journalists. Is it then possibile to say that Orphan has made the work on the level of journalist research? Are there any fragments of pilgrimage that can be compared to 20th century journalists reports? To find the answers to the questions above I presented the Radziwił’s description of space depicted in Ryszard Kapuscinski’s reporting style.

Remember gardens… Images of the countryside in Feblik by Małgorzata Musierowicz

Pamiętajcie o ogrodach… Obrazy wsi w Febliku Małgorzaty Musierowicz

Author(s): Karolina Jędrych / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Małgorzata Musierowicz; Feblik; Jeżycjada; village; painting; literature; open air museum

The present article has the form of an interpretative essay, in which I am writing about the latest novel from the series Jeżycjada — Feblik (2015) by Małgorzata Musierowicz. The eponymous images of the countryside refer to literary and pictorial comments and associations with the real rural landscape uttered by the characters of the book. I pay particular attention to two scenes from the novel: in the open-air museum in Dziekanowice and by the lake in the forest. There we can find references to the paintings of Józef Chełmoński, Jacek Malczewski, Julian Fałat, also to the poetry by Adam Mickiewicz, and — indirectly — to the literature of positivism. I term these associations literary and painting filters, which the author of the novel imposes on that which is real. Thanks to these filters we can see how the memory of the characters created by Musierowicz functions and to what extent their associations are derived from the reality and from artistic fiction. In this article I also emphasize the role of characters’ and the author’s herself fascination of literature and art in shaping the tastes of the readers and encouraging them to explore the literary and artistic gardens.

Author(s): Anna J. Piwowarczyk / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: intercultural communication competences; quality; quality of education; language courses

The aim of the article is first of all to present the model of intercultural communication competences as a category affecting the improvement of the quality of foreign language education at foreign language courses in higher education institutions. The next part of the article presents the results of a qualitative study concerning the ways of developing intercultural communication competence during foreign language courses. It also focuses on presenting foreign language teachers’ perspective on the development of these competences in the process of foreign language instruction at the university. In other words, the article attempts to answer the question whether foreign language teachers develop competences of intercultural communication during language courses.

Wooden language – the difficulties in mastering Russian pronunciation

Drewniany język, czyli o trudnościach w opanowaniu prawidłowej wymowy rosyjskiej

Author(s): Izabela Nowak / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: phonetics and phonology; articulation; prosody; interference; language competences

The aim of the article is to present the issue of mastering correct pronunciation in the Russian language by Poles. As a result of the common belief that the languages’ similarity is the factor of simplified communication, the topic is given insufficient attention in linguistic education. Moreover, the interference of these first and second languages is often understated, despite the fact that it has a strong influence on the phonetics and, de facto, hinders the communication. The obtained empirical research (mp3 records of students’ reading) was analysed in order to observe phonetic and prosodic competences. Moreover, the results of the research include glottodidactic recommendations, such as the techniques of implementing the correct articulatory and prosodic habits in Russian learning.

The contemporary television is constantly seeking for audience. This is ensured by continuous professionalisation of television shows, media convergence and persuasiveness of messages. It is also a medium that has a power to dignify. This is in line with the lifestyle that is fashionable today, that is the belief in one’s own abilities, dynamic professional development or following the novelties are reflected in the language. In television discourse, the language of success is an element building a media image of the world. The indicated issues will be discussed on the example of the Onet Rano morning programme on Internet television.

Linguistic and Stylistic Polyphony of Occasional Journalism

Językowa i stylistyczna wielogłosowość publicystyki okolicznościowej

Author(s): Maria Wojtak / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: communication;discourse;press discourse;journalism;genre of speech

The article has been conceived as an attempt to characterize a particular press publication in the shape of a genre collection. It is an extra to „Tygodnik Powszechny” (No. 29, 2018) under the title “Festiwal Stolica Języka Polskiego” (“Festival the Capital of the Polish Language)”. The publication reproduces a form of press magazine, since apart from the festival program, it includes: an editorial, interviews, reviews, commentaries and silhouettes of selected participants of the festival. Therefore, we deal with a co-occurrence of particular utterances at a specific place and time, typical for a collection. The function of notification about a cultural event (the festival) and the function of promoting the event can be ascribed to the whole issue. The author analyzes the abovementioned publication in the discursive perspective, and so she draws attention to specified communication practices, typical of contemporary press that create a complicated network of strategies, goals and forms of communication, contributing to the shape of contemporary journalism. The analytic purpose of the article is to present a communication polymorphism of a particular set of press utterances that interpret a specified reality and aim at convincing the readers to this interpretation. Particular utterances are treated as voices, i.e. communicatively (pragmatically) and formally shaped types of language activities.

Filozoficzne aspekty bajek terapeutycznych Marii Molickiej

Keywords: therapeuthic tale; Maria Molicka; Bruno Bettelheim; meaning of life; philosophy; psychology

The autism researcher Bruno Bettelheim claimed that all children’s psychic traumas and fears derive from feeling senselessness in their life. His thesis inspired the author of this article to study therapeutic tales of Maria Molicka (who pioneered this literary genre in Poland). This kind of tales names emotions, illustrates problems but also explains rules of the world, shows the meaning of life, death and suffer. Molicka’s texts might be considered in psychological as well as philosophic context. The following article concentrates on finding answers to important questions concerning human’s existence, philosophic inspirations in Molicka’s writing and importance of philosophy in child’s life and using it in the modern reality.

Franz Fühmann – twórca przegrany?

Author(s): Małgorzata Dubrowska / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: writing of Franz Fühmann; lost creator; truth;testament;

The starting point of the reflections of the author of the text entitled “Franz Fühmann – a lost creator?” is a testament of Fühmann; in which the gravely ill creator admits that he had failed as both a human being and writer. By means of an analysis and interpretation of the writings by Franz Fühmann ‒ starting from a selected prose; letters; autobiographical statements and concentrating on the essays focusing on the problems related to the author/ creator and creativity; citing the statements of his student Uwe Kolbe ‒ the author crafts a portrait of an artistic human being; who sought the truth and was devoted to the literature.

Cultural Context Adaptation in Polish Translations of Gianni Rodari’s Fairy Tales over the Phone (Favole al telefono)

Adaptacja kontekstu kulturowego w polskich przekładach Bajek przez telefon Gianniego Rodariego

Author(s): Aneta Wielgosz / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Gianni Rodari; chlidren’s literature; cultural context adaptation;fairy tales;

The subject of this article is cultural context adaptation of three semantic categories: personal names, geographical names and names of foods and dishes in three Polish translations of Gianni Rodari’s short stories for chidren Fairy Tales over the Phone (Favole al telefono, 1962). This extremply popular book has been translated into Polish thrice: by Zofia Ernstowa in 1967, by Ewa Dąbrowska in 1996 and by Ewa Nicewicz-Staszowska in 2012. In this article, based on G. Klingberg’s definition of cultural context adaptation and M. Ippolito’s qualificaton of translatorical strategies used for culturally specific elements in children’s literature, the author analyzes different techniques used by three Polish translators to facilitate the understanding of elements of Italian cultures that can be found in Rodari’s fairy tales. The treatment of those elements depends on editorial and translatorical customes of various decades, but also on translator’s individual vision of implied children’s reader and more specifically, on this reader’s ability to uderstand and accept foreign culture.

Exonymisation of toponyms of the territory of Poland in French language

Exonymisation of toponyms of the territory of Poland in French language

Egzonimizacja polskich toponimów w języku francuskim

Author(s): Małgorzata Mandola / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: exonym;endonym;exonymisation;synchronic-contrastive toponymy

Knowing that toponyms (and other proper names) “migrate” to other languages, and that this phenomenon is even more intense in the era of globalization, my paper will concern the issue of integration of toponyms in a foreign language and creation of exonyms. To see this integration we will compare the structure of the toponyms and its equivalents in a foreign language – particularly, the integration of Polish proper names in the French language. French foreign names will be compared with the original Polish names by the means of an analysis known as “l’analyse fonctionnelle”(functional analysis). This analyse will let us observe in details the inner structure of the foreign and original toponyms and in consequence, to observe the process of integration of the toponyms in a foreign language. The research is related to synchronic-contrastive toponomastics and can be useful, among others, in the international project of the UN on standardization of proper names worldwide.
