Maintaining linguistic diversity through multilingual education

Maintaining linguistic diversity through multilingual education

Maintaining linguistic diversity through multilingual education

Author(s): Adél Furu / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: Finland; Turkey; Sami; Kurd; minority languages in education; linguistic diversity

This paper focuses on the educational system of two states with different cultural backgrounds. On the one hand, this paper examines the current situation of Sami teaching in Finland and on the other hand, it describes the development of Kurdish education in Turkey. Through this paper I point out how education in minority languages can contribute to the maintenance of linguistic diversity in the above mentioned multilingual societies. In the multilingual Sápmi area the existing linguistic relationships are constantly changing, while the concept of linguistic diversity is redefined. In the last half decade, Turkey began taking into account the reality of multilingualism of the linguistically heterogeneous state. Today there are several possibilities to study the Kurdish language as a mother tongue.

THE ARTIST AS A POLITICAL ACTIVIST. THE ARTISTIC AUTHENTICATION OF THE SOCIAL FACT

THE ARTIST AS A POLITICAL ACTIVIST. THE ARTISTIC AUTHENTICATION OF THE SOCIAL FACT

Author(s): Andra Motreanu,Oana Ometa / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: art; artist; political activism; society; mediator.

The works of art, as productive forces, cannot be delimited from the social ones, therefore the work of art is subordinated to the social laws, according to the terminology set out by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. There is no conceptual dissolution between art and society and the artistic production is shaped, even in a latent way, by social production. But there is a relationship between society and art that permanently tries to balance the two forces, i.e. to mediate and to negotiate the antagonisms resulting from the dispute over hegemony. The mediator is the artist himself, the only one who has civically and artistically assumed rights and obligations. The artist is the one who decides when to place himself within or outside society and he claims his statute according to where he stands between these coordinates.

Keywords: communication; competence; culture; language; companies; business environment

Business communication is how you communicate in your line of work. It is also a matter of human relationships. Good business communication is a must to meet the demands of the business environment. Most of us spend a lot of time communicating our knowledge, thoughts, and ideas to others. Your communication at the workplace can make all the difference between success and failure. Communication is described by many as the single most important factor in choosing managerial level staff, yet despite this fact many people are unable to convey their thoughts and they are struggling to communicate effectively.

Imaginary Spaces in the Fantastic Stories of I. P. Culianu

Spaţii imaginare în povestirile fantastice ale lui I. P. Culianu

Author(s): Andra Gabriela Holhoş,Maria Holhoș / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 3/2014

Keywords: space/non-space, Ioan Petru Culianu’s short stories

In the volume „The Pale Parchment” by Ioan Petru Culianu, there are described some spaces favourable to communication: the exhibition, the museum, the camp, the store etc. Emphasizing the changes in the postmodern society, the author stresses the idea of individual alienation. The places favourable to communication in contemporary society are various, increased in number, improved in comfort and much promoted by mass-media. However, they seem suitable for the emigrant’s or treveller’s soul, who has left his universe willing to fit in some political, economic, spiritual new mentalities, finding clear differences in belonging and identification. The concrete individuality of the spaces described in the fantastic Culian short stories and stories creates the illusion of non-space related to non-time, as instruments of adjustment of individual conscience related to collectivity. In these creation, the laws of the ordinary world seem suspended in the hope of configuration of some solvable dilemas only at certain levels of reality.

Environmental Impact and Economic Cost of Agricultural Inputs

Environmental Impact and Economic Cost of Agricultural Inputs

Author(s): Samuel N. Mlangeni,Collins C. Ngwakwe / Language(s): English / Issue: 5/2018

Keywords: economic costs; environmental costs; agricultural inputs; agricultural emissions; environmental impact;

This paper evaluated the effect of agricultural input (fertilizer) on carbon emission (methane and nitrous oxide) in South Africa and the likely environmental costs of such emissions. The paper applied a quantitative research design and data were from secondary sources, mainly from the archives of Index Mundi, the US EPA and the World Bank. The Pearson correlation results show that fertilizer input is related to agricultural nitrous oxide and methane emissions at a P-value of 0.027 and 0.05 respectively. This thus, confirms that fertilizer input causes an agricultural induced emission of green house gases (nitrous oxide and methane). Furthermore, findings from the estimation of potential environmental costs of methane and nitrous oxide emissions showed that these have had rising and steady environmental costs to the society, which, unfortunately is born by the society. Consequently, the study recommends agricultural related emission policy to enable farmers internalise some of the environmental costs of agricultural inputs that are born by the society, which is the socio economic costs. Such further research should determine a fair model that may be used to internalise environmental costs of agricultural inputs but to avoid consumers of agricultural produce from paying for such costs.
