Representations of the Gulag in the Romanian Detention Memoirs

Representations of the Gulag in the Romanian Detention Memoirs

Author(s): Ruxandra Cesereanu / Language(s): English / Issue: 15/2008

Keywords: Romania; Communism; Gulag; detention memoirs; memory; testimony.

The present study is an introduction to the Romanian detention memoirs (a body of works that totals over 100 published volumes published during the next 15 years ensuing the demise of the communist regime in Romania). This essay seeks to contribute a minimal and useful classification of the attempts at testamentary records coming out since 1990. It is premised on the assumption that, if the western reader is well acquainted with this type of literature, the Eastern European reader in general and the Romanian reader in particular, had to catch up with an ethical-moral delay that can be explained politically. The thrust of my argument here is that post-1989, after the fall of communism, readers in Romania experienced an abrupt turn from the hypocritical literature to the literature of infernal truth.

A Multi-Criteria Analysis of Air Communication Platforms Within the Hybrid Operational Environment

Analiza multi-criterială a platformelor de comunicații aeriene în contextul mediului operațional hibrid

Author(s): Cătălin Cioacă,Daniel Stefanescu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 3/2015

Keywords: Air communications platforms; hybrid conflict; multi-criteria analysis; analytic hierarchy process; strategic decision

The air communication platforms, using the accelerated technological progress with spectacular effects in the field of developed performance, takes an important role in providing information regarding connectivity in this field. The requirements which the military communications systems must fulfill are formulated in connection with mission objectives. Quantification of the utility for air communications platforms using binomial multi-criteria analysis and analytic hierarchy process provides decision makers with the basic knowledge needed to increase the operational capabilities of forces. The planning process must integrate the requirement of continuous, secure distance communications under any circumstances.The designed model gives the opportunity to identify the best solutions for increasing the utility of aerial communications platforms (tactical satellites, high, medium and low altitude aerial platforms) in various contexts and scenarios

The Prepositions "a", "in", "per", and "tra": Italian L2 of Polish Speakers

The Prepositions "a", "in", "per", and "tra": Italian L2 of Polish Speakers

Preposizioni "a", "in", "per", "tra". L’italiano L2 di parlanti polacchi

Author(s): Monica Mosca / Language(s): Italian / Issue: 2/2018

Keywords: second-language acquisition; Italian L2; Polish motion event; Italian prepositions; Polish prepositions

This article deals with the learning of some spatial prepositions in Italian L2 by Polish learners. Italian and Polish differ in at least two ways, as Polish expresses syntactic relations by a full case system, while Italian relies only on prepositions. More importantly, according to Talmy’s classification, Polish is a satellite-framed language while Italian is verb-framed, but later studies have shown that these categories are not perfectly binary but fuzzy.In the learning of prepositions, three elements are in play: a natural progression from simpler to more complex prepositions; the conceptualisation of the event in which the prepositions are used to express spatial relations; and the semantic categorisation of the participants into the event, in particular the basic one, Ground. By means of different elicitation techniques (questionnaires, frog story, and written tasks), many oral and written texts have been collected from Polish learners of Italian of different levels of competence. It has been revealed that the influence of the motion-event typology affects the learning of the motion expressions in an irrelevant proportion; this is probably due to the fact that Polish, like other Slavic languages, appears to be less satellite-framed than Germanic languages, being characterised by the weak autonomy of the verbal prefixes. The inappropriate uses of prepositions confirm the natural progression of complexity, and the semantic categorisation of the Ground also exerts an influence. In any case, the interplay of these different forces gives rise to different personal idiosyncrasies.

The restoration of a cupboard from the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography Collection

RESTAURAREA UNUI PODIȘOR DIN PATRIMONIUL MUZEULUI ETNOGRAFIC AL TRANSILVANIEI

Author(s): Monica Cristian / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 10/2020

Keywords: cupboard; traditional; museum; restoration

The cupboard is one of several staple pieces that are found in the traditional households across Romania. The 19th century cupboard was acquired by the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography from Trip village, Satu Mare County in 2002. Long before its acquisition, the artefact was covered with a thick layer of paint which obstructed the original embellishments. "e removal of the paint layer was deemed necessary as it devalued the cupboard from both a historical and an aesthetical perspective. "e cleaning process was done slowly and gradually using chemical (dimethylformamide or DMF) as well as mechanical methods (spatula, scalpel).

“A Queen that Writes Fairytales? That Must Be a Wonderful Country!”

„O regină care scrie basme?! Atunci aceea trebuie să fie o ţară minunată!”

Author(s): Monica Timofte / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: Dagmar Falk;Romania;

This interview was taken in 2012 during my time as a Ph.D. lecturer of Romanian at the University of Lund. Designated as the “Alf Lombard Year” by a cultural initiative of the Romanian Embassy in Stockholm, the year 2012 celebrated the scholarly achievements of Alf Lombard (1902-1996), professor of Romance languages in Lund between 1939 and 1969. The initiative afforded me the privilege of contacting Lombard's former assistant, Dagmar Falk (28 December 1912 - 23 March 2019). Aged 100 at the date of this interview, Dagmar was to be the most surprising and pleasant interlocutor I met while in Sweden. This dialogue is a late rendition of her memories, which I hold dear to my heart.

CIVIL WAR PREDICTION: LITERATURE REVIEW ON TERRITORIAL AND ETHNIC STRUCTURAL CONDITIONS

Author(s): Adriana Ilavská / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: civil war; conflict prediction; conflict prevention; ethnic conflict; territorial conflict;

Armed civil conflicts in foreign countries have significant consequences for states in the international system. The political, social and economic threats generated by them have in recent years become relevant in a global sense. In order to successfully deal with them, the international community desires to develop a reliable prediction and prevention model. The crucial part concerns the identification of the causal paths leading to conflict escalation but assembling these paths must be preceded by the evaluation of various possible causes as separate variables. It is also important to factor causal complexity into the model, therefore to analyze not only single variables but also their interconnections. The article reviews two major areas of civil conflict causes – territorial and ethnic. It summarizes the main arguments and theories beyond the suggested proxy variables representing territorial and ethnic problems. By reviewing the existing research, this study aims to facilitate the selection of variables for prediction and prevention systems. The result is a literature review clarifying the relations among the causes of conflict that underlies their importance. All proposed territorial and ethnic causes have to be assessed in relation with complementary variables but also applied to a particular country which would benefit from the prediction and prevention model.

NEW EVIDENCE FOR NICHOLAS ASTON’S PRINCIPIA ON THE SENTENCES: BASEL, UB, A.X.24

Author(s): Monica Brinzei / Language(s): English / Issue: 18-19/2021

Keywords: Nicholas Aston; Sentences; 14th century; Manuscripts; Articuli;

Nicholas Aston’s lectures on the Sentences of Peter Lombard, delivered at Oxford around 1350, are crucial for tracing reactions to the freshly released De causa Dei of Thomas Bradwardine and a unique piece of evidence for doctrinal tendencies at Oxford just before Wycliff. Although historical and doctrinal elements converge to demonstrate the significance of this author for our knowledge of Oxonian philosophy in the later Middle Ages, not much scholarly attention has been devoted to his surviving writings.

Cross-sectional view of the Romanian post-socialist society in five plays

A romániai posztszocialista társadalom keresztmetszete öt előadásban

Author(s): Nóra Ugron / Language(s): Hungarian / Issue: 2/2021

Keywords: Political Theatre Season;Matern;Capete Înfierbântate;subPământ;Lucrător Universal;David Schwarz;Nóra Ugron;

The essay of Nóra Ugron analyses the plays of Political Theatre Season (Stagiune de Teatru Politic) which were available online in the autumn of 2020, two of which were first performances (Matern, Capete Înfierbântate 2020), respectively were the recordings of earlier performances (2012: subPământ, 2017: ’90, 2019: Lucrător Universal). Ugron frames the thematic and esthetical description of the play within the broader context of the Season hallmarked by stage director David Schwarz and concludes that repertoire not only stages the problems of the Romanian society after the regime change, but also makes perceivable a type of experience which is missing from the stages of the art theatres.

On protest and memory

On protest and memory

On protest and memory

Author(s): Nicholas Michelsen / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2021

Keywords: New Perspectives; protests; memory; societal critique; politics; rising populism; geopolitical tensions; Europe; editorial;

The Editorial team welcomes you to the September 2021 issue of New Perspectives. The relationship between protest and memory runs through this issue. All forms of societal critique treat the past and present as the ‘antechamber’ to what may come next (Koselleck, 1988). This means every protest movement is bound up with historical storytelling, today increasingly framed by the unravelling of the post-cold war order visible in domestic political contestation, rising populism and geopolitical tensions in Europe. Standing behind this is a degree of loss of faith in the utopian philosophies of history invented to resolve the crisis of the enlightenment’s challenge to autocracy in Europe.

Using Cost-Effectiveness Analysis as a Helpful Tool in the Process of Reducing Costs in Defense Programmes

Author(s): Felicia Maria Şinca,Toma Pleşanu / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2021

Keywords: cost-effectiveness analysis;budgetary policies;acquisitions programmes;defence;economic crisis;

“Cost-Effectiveness Analysis” is a method of economic analysis that evaluates the efficiency of indicators and highlights the results of a project. This analysis determines the most effective way to complete a project, being a helpful tool in the decision-making process in the initial phase of a procurement programme. Four years after signing the agreement on the allocation of a minimum of 2%of GDP for the budget of the Ministry of National Defence starting with 2017,we are again facing a critical moment in the recent history, that of the Covid-19pandemic. In this context, the decline in the economic growth, as a result of the drastic measures imposed against the spread of the virus, will most likely lead to further budget cuts. Through this article, our aim is to present the concept of cost-effectiveness analysis, as a useful method in the decision-making process and one of the necessary tools for the efficient operation of the investment resources in defence procurement programs.

Developing a Pneumatic Actuating System to Illustrate the Functioning of an AND Logic Valve

Author(s): Daniela Voicu,Radu Vilău,Ramona-Monica Stoica / Language(s): English / Issue: 6/2021

Keywords: logic valve; pressure; pneumatic; simulation;

This paper presents the functioning of an AND logic valve, by developing a pneumatic model in the FluidSim modelling-simulation program. Also, the research by simulation will constitute the basis for implementing and developing on a test bench, the pneumatic actuation system. AND logic valves are mostly used in factories, on technological assembly lines, for an increase in security and protection of the working personnel, because the functioning of such logic valves implies that the operative uses both hands or executes two operations at the same time. Therefore, a practical example for the usage of such valves is when there is actuated a press, when, for labour protection reasons, in order to eliminate the possibility that the operative may harm himself, the press can only be actuated by pressing the actuation element with both hands. Yet again, another application of an AND logic valve is when the pressure within the circuit comes from two separate circuits.

THE EFFECTS OF SELF-VALORISATION CULTURE ON Z GENERATION’ SELF-ESTEEM

Author(s): Alina Mărgăriţoiu,Simona Eftimie / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2021

Keywords: self-valorisation culture; self-esteem; Z generation;

Z generation is so influenced not only by virtual world / communication, by advanced sophisticated and networks, by COVID-19 pandemic, but also by self-valorisation culture. Although they prefer online education because of its freedom for action, Z generation is in risk for an independent self-construction that lead to a devastating individualism for their own life. Our study aims to describe the influence of self-valorisation culture on our candidates’ self-esteem (from Z generation) for Pedagogy and Primary and Preschool Pedagogy. For this purpose, we have analysed the content of their motivational essays – part of their admission file. The results indicate that Z generation candidates’ self-esteem is higher than Y generation candidates’ self-esteem.
