From protection to assistance. A social policy’s perspective.

Od opiekuńczości do pomocniczości. Z perspektywy polityki społecznej.

Author(s): Joanna Lustig,Marian Mitręga,Natalia Stępień‑Lampa / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: social policy; protection; assistance;

The book addresses social policy issues in the context of two organizing principles governing the approach towards this discipline – the principles of protection and assistance. The monograph is both theoretical and practical, since it considers social policy theory and practice in Poland. The role of social policy in the contemporary world is constantly on the increase owing to demographic changes, the emergence of new social problems or aggravation of those previously existing, among other things. Moreover, this discipline also undergoes numerous transformations, along with the changing set of priorities and the way of thinking about societal intervention in the social sphere. On this account it is essential that continuous studies of social policy be conducted, as was the authors of this study’s intention. The monograph consists of three chapters. Chapter one characterizes doctrines, trends, and selected interactions in social policy. Chapter two addresses issues regarding social assistance. Chapter three examines the cooperation of public administration with the civic sector. This publication is addressed to those who have interests in matters of social policy, policymakers, particularly local governments’ officials, and those representing the institutions of the Secondary and Tertiary Sectors.

Going beyond the text. Literature in reference to tradition and reality

Wyjść poza tekst. Literatura wobec tradycji i rzeczywistości

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: tradition; reality

The collective monograph entitled Going beyond the text. Literature in reference to tradition and reality presents a variety of methodological attitudes and equally diverse literary and historical interests of a group of young researchers from the Universities of Warsaw and Silesia, and The Jagiellonian University and Adam Mickiewicz University. What binds all the sketches is the correlation of the literary texts and events of the contemporary literary life (the 20th and 21st centuries) with the literary and cultural tradition, as well as the attitude to reality, which has been understood and defined in different ways. The monograph presents the undertakings of historical and literary interpretation of the works by Joseph Mackiewicz (P.A. Kowalczyk), Stanislaw Lem and Jacek Dukaj (Sz. P. Kukulak), Jacek Malczewski (S. Trela), Jacek Kaczmarski (P. Marciniak), Janusz Głowacki (K. Olczak), Dorota Masłowska, Jacek Hugo-Bader and Joanna Bator (M. Olejniczak). Moreover, lesser-known episodes of the literary life (A. Grochowska, P. Potasińska, S.P. Kukulak, P. Urbańska, P.A. Kowalczyk, M. Mijatovic) have been recalled and interpreted. Modern comparative analysis has been undertaken (by R. Pulkowski and P. Urbańska), and original methodological suggestions have been put forward (by P. Potasińska, P. Zając and M. Olejniczak). However, the emerging from the accumulated volume of sketches picture of the condition of the literature and its ‘relation to reality’ and to the literary tradition, which is being contemporarily revived, is not full, and even was not intended to be as such. The authors of the individual chapters of the monograph present there their cognitive intuitions, rather than advance ‘firm’ historical and literary or theoretical thesis. This is also in accord with the intention of the editors of the monograph – to present a panorama, a historical and literary catalog of the problems faced by researchers in the middle of the second decade of the twenty-first century. And what is more, to do this without attempting to settle the question whether this ‘project of the future’, i.e. of the future literary studies in Poland, will materialize and will be developed and added into future monographs by the researchers who have just started their scientific career, or it will be merely an episode that will not be further elaborated on in future research or monographs. The monograph presents two perspectives: 1. traditional, historical, being apparently in accordance with the the principle that if something has happened, and if some text has been written, it is subject to the description and interpretation; 2. ‘involved’ – putting important questions about the status of literature ‘here and now’, about being a literary scholar and humanist in the post-modern civilization. It is just these elements, wherein the significance and relevance of the monograph Going beyond the text. Literature in reference to tradition and reality should be looked for. On another level, it might be written that the articles collected in the monograph constitute a kind of incomplete panorama of what is going to happen in Polish literary studies in the coming years.

Politics – education – gender. From the perspective of social anthropogics

Polityka – edukacja – płeć kulturowa. Z perspektywy antropogiki społecznej

Author(s): Elżbieta Górnikowska-Zwolak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: education; gender; educational/gender politics; social pedagogy/anthropogics;educational politics; gender politics; social pedagogy; social anthropogics

Politics is a ubiquitous term today. The author, a representative of social pedagogy (anthropogics), analyzes various approaches to politics, focuses on social and educational policy, looking for a place for gender politics. In her dissertation, she provides a critical insight into the educational policy in Poland after the 1989 political transformation. On the one hand, education is here understood broadly, also outside school, in the public space, from where messages about the educational dimension flow. On the other hand, the focus is directed to selected aspects of gender politics and education, which are critical to the development of girls and women, especially sexual education and reproductive rights. The end of writing the thesis coincided with the outbreak of the Revolution of Women (Autumn 2020), who called for democracy and their civil rights. The publication can help readers understand why this happened.

The units of language in a system and in a text 3

Jednostki języka w systemie i w tekście 3

Author(s): / Language(s): Russian,Polish

Keywords: vocabulary; semantics; pragmatics; cultural linguistics; historical linguistics; translation; comparative linguistics; the Russian language; the Czech language;the Croatian language;

The set of problems engaged in the texts which are presented in the monograph reflects the multifariousness of research perspectives in modern Slavic linguistics with reference to both traditional and novel methodological approaches. The authors’ focus has to do with the problems of the description of the units of the Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Czech and Croatian languages at the particular levels of these languages. The linguistic units are examined not only as elements of a system but also as components (which are varied genre-wise) of early and modern texts. Apart from the analyses which draw from structuralist traditions there are also ones in which linguistic phenomena are considered in a broad social-political-cultural context. The publication is a collection of pieces which are devoted both to one language as well as comparative studies: Polish-Russian, Polish-Czech, Polish-Croatian, Russian-Czech ones. There are also texts which are devoted to the problems of translatology. The broad range of problems which are engaged by the authors from Poland and beyond enables the reader to familiarise himself or herself with the areas and trends of work conducted by the particular academic centres. We hope that it will also become a source of inspiration for further research endeavours.

The Sejm Investigative Committees in Political Practice of the Third Republic of Poland

Sejmowe komisje śledcze w praktyce politycznej III RP

Author(s): Adrian Drynda / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: parliamentary committee of inquiry; inter-party rivalry

The institution of a parliamentary investigative committee is presently known to the politicalsystems of most democratic states in the world, as it fulfils many important functions in civilsociety. This work is an attempt at answering the question whether the Sejm investigative committeesin Poland constitute an actual, real, and non-partisan instrument of parliamentary oversight,or are merely one of the elements of ad hoc partisan rivalry. Three essential aspects of thisissue have been analyzed: the circumstances of appointment, mechanisms of operation, and finalconclusions of the Sejm investigative committees, whose work was conducted during the periodof the Third Republic of Poland (between 2003 and 2018). It is also the intention of the authorto determine the validity and advisability of utilizing the institution of an investigative committeewithin Poland’s political system alongside other instruments of parliamentary oversight.

The epoch in which we live is also full of communicatively difficult situations, resulting from the pace of civilisational changes, cultural and social conflicts, growing divides related to opening to the Other, with whom we are not always prepared to meet. The works and studies compiled in the present book are divided into four parts and the problems described in them focus on many communicative situations and social phenomena. The authors point the language spheres, but also many different contexts of using the natural code, such as politics, racism, gender, sexual orientation, religion, sport, disease and national or cultural difference.

The philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas as ancilla theologiae

Filozofia Emmanuela Levinasa jako ancilla theologiae

Author(s): Jan Słomka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Levinas; creation; atheism; freedom; revelation; theology

The present monograph constitutes a theological reading of the thought of Emmanuel Levinas. The volume contains Levinas’s assessment of the contemporary intellectual and spiritual landscape of the West and an analysis of selected thoughts of the French philosopher — from the idea of creation, through atheism, freedom and guilt (or the original sin in theology), to the question of truth and revelation — and their comparison with analogous issues in Catholic theology. The final section presents his critique of Christian theology. It is a fundamental critique, questioning the rational foundations of this theology. It is this critique, as the author of this volume argues, that is most inspiring for a Catholic theologian.

Stating the Obvious: Celan – Beckett – Nauman

Author(s): Sławomir Masłoń / Language(s): English

Keywords: cela; beckett; nauman

Neo‑fantastic prose of the French‑speaking area in the 20th and 21st centuries

Author(s): Katarzyna Gadomska / Language(s): French

Keywords: fantasy; fear; vampire; ghost; psychopath; doppelgänger

The work constitutes an attempt to describe the poetics of the 20th and 21st century neo‑fantastic prose of selected French‑speaking countries (France, Belgium, Quebec). The analyses of the material made use of such research methods as a semiotic description of the character (A. Greimas’ actantial model), Ph. Hamon’s semiological model and U. Eco and V. Jouve’s semiopragmatic method. The first chapter covers basic elements of the world presented in literary works: time, space, their chronotop (M. Bachtin) and personage, responsible for creating a mimetic illusion crucial to the formation of the fantastic effect. The next chapter was devoted to the manifestations of “a fantastic phenomenon”, taking on the shapes of the following anxiogenic figures: a ghost, vampire, psychopath (also in gore movie), double, woman, fear‑evoking objects. The next chapter concentrated on the presentation of special ethics and aesthetics of fantastic prose these days, describing above all the evil, ugliness, the negative and repulsive (all possible perversions and sexual deviations, pure evil, cruelty). The last chapter discusses the form of works within the scope of “new fantastic literature”: selected elements of a paratext according to G. Genette (an incipit, excipit, preface), forms and structures of narration, as well as traditional and new writing techniques typical of the genre of fantastic literature exclusively. A conclusion constitutes an attempt to answer the question on the scope within which contemporary fantastic literature modifies definitions of traditional fantastic literature and to what an extent it continues or diverges from canonic fantastic literature. The appendix includes versions of “urban legends” in extenso, as well as notes bringing the profiles of the French‑speaking writers closer.

Pisanie i czytanie (o) fotografii. Odkrywcy, klasycy, obrazoburcy

Author(s): Piotr Zawojski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: photography; theory of photography; image; image science; visual culture

This book is an attempt at a new interpretation of texts by classical authors who write about photography as a medium, a way of recording the world, a tool of artistic creation and epistemological machinery. In addition to these re-interpreted authors, the book also includes chapters devoted to authors who propose new recognition of the phenomenon of photography, especially in the context of the expansion of new visual media and reflections on its “inhuman” dimension. A dozen chapters in the style of a scientific essay – which for the author means combining the accessibility of the argument without resigning from in-depth analysis and interpretation – is intended to present the diversity of looking at photography.

The theatre of local histories in Central Europe

Teatr historii lokalnych w Europie Środkowej

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: local histories; Central Europe

Współczesne teatry — zwłaszcza w mniejszych ośrodkach — coraz częściej angażują się w życie lokalnych społeczności. W proponowanych spektaklach chętnie podejmują tematy związane z historią oraz kulturową i etniczną tożsamością miejsca, w którym działają. Twórcy teatralni poddają refleksji działanie mechanizmów pamięci, przywołują przeżycia indywidualne i zbiorowe, nieuwzględnione w ogólnodostępnej wersji historii. Partnerami projektu, wspartego finansowo przez Międzynarodowy Fundusz Wyszehradzki, byli: Instytut Wiedzy Filmowej i Teatralnej Słowackiej Akademii Nauk, Katedra Studiów Teatralnych, Filmowych i Medialnych Uniwersytetu im.

Authentic interpretation in the light of the science of legal interpretation

Wykładnia autentyczna w świetle nauki o wykładni prawa

Author(s): Sławomir Piekarczyk,Sławomir Tkacz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: authentic interpretation; legal interpretation; applying the law; real lawmaker; tools of the legal interpretation; the intention of the lawmaker

The term “authentic interpretation” is usually understood as an interpretation with universally binding force made by the authority that established the given provision. As a rule, it is indicated that it has little impact on legal practice. Meanwhile, according to the authors, in practice, authentic interpretation has much more significance than what is usually associated with it. They point out that the concept of authentic interpretation is characterized by a high degree of ambiguity. Various legal constructs are characterized in terms of authentic interpretation. The monograph aims to organize the statements relating to the problem of authentic interpretation. The findings made are referred to legal practice. The importance of the issues raised allows the authors to formulate a general conclusion that the issues taken up in the monograph can be classified as key issues for the science of legal interpretation.

Keywords: feminatives; masculinatives; neutral terms; word formation; linguistic etiquette

The publication contains compiled examples of linguistically correct feminine forms of positions, functions and professions found at the University of Silesia in Katowice. During the conceptual work, another facet of the modern world became apparent to us, namely the need to develop guidelines for the creation of forms that do not indicate gender. This resulted in extending our naming proposals to include a neutral aspect and calling the prepared dictionary “inclusive”.

The Sense of Taste. A Lexical-Semantic Study

Zmysł smaku. Studium leksykalno-semantyczne

Author(s): Barbara Mitrenga / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: taste; Lexical-Semantic Study

The following book presents a meticulous description of the sense of taste fromthe perspective of linguistics. The analysis of both former and contemporary lexiswhich belong to the semantic field of taste – hereby referred to as the lexis of taste – isprovided with a historico-cultural commentary which concerns the Polish penchantfor taste over the centuries, as well as the shaping of Polish cuisine. The analysis oflinguistic facts finds interdisciplinary complementation in the following fields: biology, psychology, chemistry and history. Metalinguistic references taken up in thisstudy are correlative to the lexical analysis of the sense of taste, which duly places thebook within the scope of interdisciplinary studies. This book’s linguistic data is derived from nine general and historical dictionariesof the Polish language, as well as directly from the sources. The lexis in questionencompasses, among others, the noun smak (taste) along with its former equivalent– ukuszenie; adjectives refering to four basic taste qualities, e.g. salty, sweet, sour, andbitter, as well as their derivatives. Moreover, the study provides a description of derivativesof the following nouns: salt, honey, sugar, vinegar, lemon, wormwood, and bile,or names of the most characteristic products which represent particular taste fromthe historical perspective. However, derivations based on the previously stated wordsare not the subject of the proposed analysis, but lexemes whose meaning connotes thesense of taste (exclusive of words such as sugar bowl, patisserie, and brine). Observationsare made with regard to basic as well as metaphorical lexis of taste. The book consists of the introduction, seven chapters and conclusions. The subsequentchapters take up theoretical and general issues which deal with the perceptionof taste (chapter one), provide the analysis of lexis refering to the notion of taste(chapter two), to particular tastes (chapters three to six), as well as the phenomenonof synaesthesia (chapter seven). The book ends with a list of tables used in the thesis,a list of abbreviations, sources, and index.

Educating secondary school teachers in Upper Silesia between 1865—1976

Kształcenie nauczycieli szkolnictwa ogólnokształcącego na Górnym Śląsku w latach 1865–1976

Author(s): Grażyna Kempa / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: secondary school teachers; Upper Silesia

Interest in issues connected with the shape of Polish education, including personal‑professionalpreparation, does not start today. I believe that the history of pedeutology insuch a territory‑,socio‑religion‑and culture‑specificregion as Upper Silesia, can be helpfulin searching a contemporary conception of teacher education.Despite the fact that studies on the history of Silesia have been conducted for manyyears, historiographic works on this coal‑steelmotherland area present the contribution ofSilesian educational activists in the development of a pedeutological thought fragmentarily. That is why the subject matter dealt with in this book is education of secondary schoolteachers in Upper Silesia between 1865 and 1976.The aim of the studies was above all to recognize the forms of teacher professional educationin Silesia between 1865 and 1976 in the perspective of continuation, changes anddirection of education development of teachers in question. The assumption was that thevery insight was to cover everything that was stable in personnel training for secondaryschooling in Silesia and that was changing, that is, expressed progress or regress in relationto changes appearing in understanding certain elements of professionalism (justified bytheoreticians and tested by creative teachers from the region, Poland or other countries).I also tried to explain the very differences taking into account political‑economicandsocio‑culturalconditions in Silesia at a given time.My observations were also aimed at presenting teachers not only in the perspective ofthe very time caesura because it only expresses the sense of what has already happened andhas no value nowadays. Historical studies on teacher education are valuable only whenthey can show the whole process of preparation for professional work which, althoughstarted in the past, has still been important not only in theory, but also in practice. The research aims outlined in this way were reflected in several research issues concentratingaround the following questions:1. What opinions did theoreticians and educational activists, including National EducationCommittee members, have on teacher personality and what conclusions derivedfrom them for would‑beeducation reformers?2. Were (if so, which and why) the opinions of educational activists and researchers ofan andragogical thought used by Silesian reformers of teacher education? To what anextent can their heritage be considered a contribution to the national treasure?3. Did (if so, which and why) the elements of the Polish educational practice in Silesia atthe time of annexation inspire the authors of national education to shape Pole’s inter-ests around institutional forms of pedagogue education and which of them (perhapsfrom a later period of time) can constitute a basis for a currently shaped system ofteacher education in Poland?4. Did (if so, which and why) experiences in educating Polish and foreign teachers as wellas opinions and academic theories motivate educational activists to cooperate with self‑governmentauthorities of Silesian voivodship in favour of education in institutionalforms of pedagogue education? What difficulties did make their efficient and commondevelopment impossible and which of the actions of former institutions of secondaryteacher professional development can be treated as fruitful?5. Should (if so, why and to what an extent) one admit that specialists in the arts from Silesiaduring armed fights with the invader, formed such forms of Polish education anddeveloped their certain personality features to be used in the Polish People’s Republic, educating students morally and factually‑methodologically?6. Did (if so, why) Polish animators of teacher education (as well as their students) in UpperSilesia realize education of national and regional values in a conscious way; whichaims and programmes can be a basis for modern ones bringing about an identity ofa young generation?7. Can (if so, why and to what an extent) one say that the lecturers of pedagogic tertiaryeducation in Upper Silesia cocreated universal pedeutology?I must underline that taking into account my research effort, i aimed at defining andcharacterizing typical forms of teacher education, thereby indicating possibilities andneeds of Upper Silesia schooling and research results which i was trying to publish in thebook. The analysis of the issues in question is included in six chapters of the work. The firstone discusses the most important opinions of humanists on personality, including attitudeto work and teacher education from mid 19th century to mid 20th century. The next chapterpresents the process of shaping the Polish academic‑teachingenvironment in Upper Silesiawhich changed in a territorial, socio‑religiousand cultural way, as well as shows the Polisheducational practice. The third chapter introduces the forms of education and trainingsecondary school students and teachers in the light of socio‑economicand administrative‑educationalchanges between 1918 and 1939 in Silesia, particularly in Upper Silesia. Thefourth chapter characterizes professional paths and process of humanists’ engagement inthe issues of the Polish education during the World War II. Chapter five analyses teacher’sbehaviour related to the restoration and formation of Silesian secondary schooling from1945 to 1976 in Silesia‑Dąbrowaand Katowice voivodship respectively. The last chapter,on the other hand, concentrates on the recognition of the symbols of pedagogy professionalizationat the Higher School of Pedagogy in Katowice and, subsequently, at the Universityof Katowice till the opening of the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology. The very book closes with general considerations and conclusions pointing to thosechanges and directions in the development of pedagogue preparation for secondary schooleducation, which led the reformers of Silesian education to create efficient forms of teachereducation between 1865 and 1976. At the same time, the main obstacles during formationand functioning of various forms of education and pedagogue training in Upper Silesiawere indicated.

Ruins of existence. Sketches on less present poets

Ruiny istnienia. Szkice o poetach mniej obecnych

Author(s): Marian Kisiel / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: ekspresjonizm; klasycyzm; formulizm; Śląsk; emigracja

Ruiny istnienia gromadzą artykuły o siedmiu poetach polskich XX wieku (Józef Wittlin, Emil Zegadłowicz, Julian Przyboś, Tadeusz Sułkowski, Wilhelm Szewczyk, Bogdan Czaykowski, Andrzej K. Waśkiewicz). Autor pokazuje ich historycznoliterackie miejsce, a interpretując znane i mniej znane wiersze, odkrywa osobnicze piękno poezji ekspresjonistycznej, klasycystycznej, awangardowej i formulistycznej. Obecna w liryce twórców różnych generacji formuła „istnienia” pokazana została w egzystencjalnym i społecznym wymiarze.
