Proper names in the Newest Prose – between Idiolect and the Issues of Modern Culture

Nazwy własne w najnowszej prozie polskiej – między idiolektem a problematyką współczesnej kultury

Author(s): Beata Kiszka-Pytel / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: newest prose; moder culture

The aim of the dissertation entitled Proper Names in the Newest Prose – between Idiolect and the Issues of Modern Culture is to present the functioning of the proprial sphere in the youngest Polish literature, with particular focus on chrematoma, whose presence is increasingly visible in the newest artistic texts. Onomastic analyses have been conducted and set against the backdrop of postmodernism, fluid modernity, current sociological problems and contemporary culture (including popular culture). What is researched in the individual parts of the work is the relationship between proper names in the context of the frequently discussed themes of contemporary culture, such as time, space and consumption. The chapter dedicated to the analysis of proper names versus the issues of temporality, revealed a problem of the importance of the contemporary Polish prose and its future readership in the perspective of the next decades. Is the newest literature doomed to be short lived by its preference for the onyms, due to the increasing frequency of impermanent propria in literature? Is this very volatility what has the “onymic” quickly fall prey to the archaic, that is the cause of the potential precariousness of the contemporary literature and its reluctant reception (albeit often stemming from its incomprehension)? (fragment of the summary)

Who You are? I versus the Adversary in a Polish election debate. Language and reality in the categories of expression, politics, and ideology

Kim Ty jesteś? Ja kontra Adwersarz w polskiej debacie przedwyborczej. Język a rzeczywistość w kategoriach ekspresji, polityki, ideologii

Author(s): Piotr Czerwiński,Aneta Banaszek-Szapowałowa,Maciej Walczak / Language(s): Russian,Polish

Keywords: the language of politics; assessment; valuation; prosody; phonetics; communication tactics; semantics; imagery models

This monography attempts to answer the question about the role and significance of the Other under circumstances of political communication. What interests the authors are mostly relations between active participants of political debate (I versus the Adversary) that point to both their self-image and how they construe their political competitor. The said images may be provided by a given politician either explicitly or transmitted in a covert manner, including innuendos or prosodic and phonetic markers. The presented analysis is based on the text of a pre-election debate between Jarosław Kaczyński and Donald Tusk in 2007, yet it is not aimed at assessing those two particular political opponents, their views, and programmes; it rather endeavours to depict objectively what is divulged by the politicians’ public statements and utterances. The authors are first and foremost focused on how individuals utilise language and on language itself in the sphere of politics, especially when interlocutors confront each other in a pre-election debate. The monography commences with a theoretical introduction that outlines the notion ofother which is fundamental for the issues discussed in the book; the said notion is consideredin terms of political communication not only in its linguistic, but also philosophical andpsychological aspects.Chapter one is devoted to prosodic-phonetic exponents of assessing one’s political opponent and, furthermore, to emotionality of utterances displayed at acoustic, intonation, and sometimes purely articulation level. The following chapter searches for covert (non-verbalised) elements of the politicians’ mutual characteristics, oftentimes hidden in a subtext of communication strategies deployed by sides of political struggle. The final chapter is a proposition of unveiling and characterising particular language components that interact with one another during a confrontation of debate participants, in addition to their formalisation in a form of models pertaining self-images and images of one’s political adversary. The monography’s appendix contains a transcript of the debate in its entirety, whose particular elements were subjected to closer analysis in the main body of the book.

Kontynenty. Vol. 1: Studies and sketches on the work of Andrzej Busza

Kontynenty. T. 1: Studia i szkice o twórczości Andrzeja Buszy

Author(s): / Language(s): English,Polish

Keywords: Kontynenty; Andrzej Busza;poet;

The oeuvre of Andrzej Busza is undoubtedly among the most astonishing in Polish contemporary literature. What the foregoing largely stems from is the originality and singularity of his universal world vision, conspicuous poetic diction, and quite characteristic constellation of problems and issues, as well as Busza’s exceptional status as a bilingual writer, being in fact situated “in-between” at least two cultural traditions, but also his complex biography during which he has been meandering through the stage of an émigré, and then an emigrant. A poet, prose writer, translator, literary historian and critic, and a Joseph Conrad scholar – Busza remains one of the last, yet far from being the least, among the pro-independence representatives of Polish post-September 1939 emigration. Born in Kraków in 1938, he fled Poland with his parents on September 17 of the following year, spent the Second World War in the Middle East, to settle in England for the years 1947–1965 where he graduated from University College London with a degree in English. In 1965 he moved to Canada and took a tenure as a lecturer and then a professor of English literature at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. During the years 1958–1962 he was a member of editorial team of such London-based literary journals as Merkuriusz Polski – Życie Akademickie, Kontynenty – Nowy Merkuriusz, and Kontynenty, in addition to having been a member of the poetic group originating from those journals. He was awarded the following literary prizes: the Kościelski Award (1962), the Władysław and Nella Turzańscy Award (2005), and the Association of Polish Writers Abroad award (2013). Among others, he has published eight books of poetry, a dozen or so short stories, multiple translations of Polish poetry into English (in cooperation with Bogdan Czaykowski, including poems by Miron Białoszewski, Iwaszkiewicz, Jastrun, Miłosz, Wierzyński), and a monograph on the so-called Polish backdrop of Joseph Conrad and the seminal impact of the Polish literary tradition on Conrad, as well as many scholarly articles on the author of Heart of Darkness. Cultural education as education for growth in humanity

Edukacja kulturalna jako edukacja do wzrastania w człowieczeństwie

Author(s): Katarzyna Olbrycht / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: cultural education; humanity; socio-cultural animation; popularizing culture

We present to our readers volume one of the hitherto dispersed articles by Katarzyna Olbrycht, a scholar renowned within and beyond pedagogical circles, who is the author of such works as Prawda, dobro i piękno w wychowaniu człowieka jako osoby [Truth, good, and beauty in upbringing a human being as a person] (2000) and O roli przykładu, wzoru, autorytetu i mistrza w wychowaniu osobowym [On the role of example, pattern, role model, and master in personal upbringing] (2007), which have become both an inspiration and a point of reference for theoreticians and practicioners of upbringing alike. The presented publication was initiated by Professor Olbrycht’s fomer students and present-day co-workers at the University of Silesia’s Institute of Cultural Education, which she founded and has lead for years. The present volume featuring articles previously printed in conference proceedings and academic journals may be organised along a continuum that stretches from the opening text “O roli zachwytu w rozwoju człowieka” (On the role of amazement in the development of a human being) to the closing one entitled “Współczesne pytania wokół relacji ‘mistrz-uczeń’” (The present dilemmas regarding the “master-apprentice” relationship), both delivered as inauguration lectures, the former in 1998, and the latter in 2008. Therefore, by collating this monograph, which is a testimony to the scholarly path of Katarzyna Olbrycht – we wish to emphasize the fact of bringing to the readers not only a book by a professional humanities scholar, but most of all, by a scholar who publicly spoke on and has been a witness to truth, good, and beauty.

Sens życia, sens wiersza. Szkice o twórczości Stanisława Barańczaka

Author(s): Joanna Dembińska-Pawelec / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: S. Barańczak; poetry; W. Szymborska; St. John of the Cross; Norman Manea; W. A. Mozart; Barańczak; Szymborska Wisława

The work of Stanisław Barańczak – a poet, translator, essayist, literary critic – has for many years prompted studies, commentaries and interpretations. New editions of his legacy – correspondence with Wisława Szymborska, librettos of Mozart's operas, translations of the poetry of St. John of the Cross – open up a possibility for further research. The book "The Meaning of Life, the Meaning of a Poem. Sketches on the Work of Stanisław Barańczak" deals with unresearched problems of poetic, translation, epistolary and essayistic nature in the writer's oeuvre. In the author's interpretations, the axiological perspective is focal, unveiling the issue of the meaning of both human existence and his own literary work, which are inscribed in Barańczak's texts.

People and Writing. The Gliwice City Hall Clerks Who Kept Records until the Year 1744

Ludzie i pismo. Gliwiccy pisarze miejscy do 1744 roku

Author(s): Piotr Boroń / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: city history; municipal clerk; medieval and early modern urban administrative structure; history of Silesia

A municipal clerk was the main, and at times only, official in the cities of ages past. Following his appointment by municipal authorities, the outstanding incumbent pledged his loyalty, obedience, and most of all honesty. He performed the function of the city council’s secretary, sometimes in addition to being one to the mayor’s or alderman’s office; he prepared documents, kept city hall records, and made certified copies pertaining to ownership matters. The presented book gives 14 biographical accounts of the clerks who kept records in the city of Gliwice between the end of 15th century and the year 1744. Each of these accounts details a given clerk’s origins, his professional career, and the output in terms of keeping records, as well as his family and personal wealth. Moreover, the book describes the legal bases for the functioning of both, the Gliwice City Hall and its chancellary. Last but not least, the author attempts to paint a collective portrait of the said municipal clerks and supplements his work with the tables providing examples of the discussed notary publics’ official writings.

This document, wherein Malinowski expands upon his experiences, does not only give an account of what he went through in Trobriand Islands, but also becomes a journey into his inner life, highly complicated and full of contradictions. When utilising the category of field, the author departures from its strictly geographical meaning that refers to some location, a place. The field in the present monograph acquires a broader sense, which encompasses the entirety of tension occurring between a researcher and reality involving geographical, social, cultural, and psychological components. It means, therefore, that we deal with a process, comprehensively depicted by Malinowski’s Diary, allowing us to look at a research endeavour from multifaceted perspective, providing us with a picture of him as both a researcher and a human being. Scholarly / scientific works are devoid of descriptions of researchers’ mood, particular emotional states, or intensely personal thoughts or ruminations. They are well-honed intellectual products designed to prompt awe, admiration or, conversely, to provoke criticism. Diary, which at times astounds readers by its straightforwardly delivered powerful message, shows the ins and outs of the path to research data collation. Often it becomes a mirror for readers to reflect upon themselves in order to see our weaknesses, failures, but also successes and moments of elation. The monograph is written for a wide spectrum of audiences — not only social sciences’ and humanities’ students, but also non-academic readers aiming at quenching their thirst for knowledge.

Niedokończone tożsamości społeczne – szkice socjologiczne

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: social identities; sociological sketches

Wśród nich autorzy niniejszego opracowania wymieniają m.in.: polską tożsamość narodową, francuską tożsamość metropolitalną, walijską tożsamość seksualną, gliwicką tożsamość miejską, tożsamość społeczeństwa sieci oraz tożsamość ekologiczną.

Zalecenia i przestrogi lekturowe (XVI–XX wiek)

Dzięki staraniom działaczy i publicystów książki pełniły znaczące funkcje w programach kulturalnych poszczególnych dzielnic i prowincji (Krystyna Kossakowska-Jarosz, Anna Karczewska).

Take hold of the tongue, or the secrets of the Polish language (with a visit to Polish Radio Katowice)

Chwycić języka, czyli z sekretów polszczyzny (z wizytą na antenie Polskiego Radia Katowice)

Author(s): Agnieszka Piela / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: etymology; contemporary and historical Polish; semantics; lexis; phraseology; paremiology

The book is intended as a source of linguistic curiosities. It is the result of the author's descriptions of words and common verbal constructions selected from the resources of the Polish language for the purpose of presenting them to the radio audience of Agnieszka Strzemińska’s programme "Słowa i słówka. Chwycić języka, czyli z sekretów polszczyzny..." comprises 104 sketches concerning the mysteries of the Polish mother tongue. The study contains diverse linguistic material. Agnieszka Piela describes words that are intriguing in their very sound, e.g. absztyfikant, fidrygałki, safanduła, and phraseologisms that contain in their composition an enigmatic word, e.g. brać na spytki, nudy na pudy, śmiać się w kułak. The author also draws attention to seemingly ordinary lexemes, e.g. dworzec, przeciąg, rosół – which, as it turns out, also conceal a linguistic secret. The studied collection of lexemes and word combinations is the basis for observing the phenomena affected by linguistic forms in a temporal perspective. The publication devotes a lot of space to past customs, while numerous references to literary and cultural texts not only embellish the lecture, but also allow for a better understanding of the language of our ancestors and contemporary Polish. The composition of the work makes it possible to read the book in two ways: either from cover to cover, or in its individual parts – those that interest the reader most at a given moment. This is because each linguistic sketch constitutes a closed whole.

Synergistic Application of Metaphorical and Humorous Elements in Polish and English Advertising Discourse

Author(s): Anna Stwora / Language(s): English

Keywords: advertising discourse; humour; metaphor; multimodal communication; contrastive study

The book Synergistic Application aims at investigating the synergistic application of metaphorical and humorous elements in Polish and English multimodal press ads. The presence of conceptual similarities as regards both construction and understanding of humour and metaphor, seen through the lens of the theory of conceptual integration, is a starting point for discussion. The analysis of advertising material makes it possible to investigate joint workings of the phenomena in question. Furthermore, research participants’ feelings on perceived attractiveness and funniness levels of the ads sampled are examined. The results help to check how the informants understand the mechanisms inducing humour and metaphor in ads, which allows for the identification of both similarities and differences between the two language samples.

Bacchylides’ dactylo-epitrites against the background of early Greek colometry

Daktyloepitryty Bakchylidesa na tle wczesnej kolometrii greckiej

Author(s): Agnieszka Szczepaniak / Language(s): Polish
