Słownik pisarzy śląskich. T. 5

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: dictionary; Silesian literature; multiculturalism

The present volume of A dictionary of Silesian writers, similarly as the previous ones, contains biographical notes and discussions of the works of persons who, from the earliest times up to the present, co-created the history of Silesian literature, writing in Polish, German, Czech or Latin. In principle, the biographical notes present only deceased authors, including those whose relations with Silesia were only temporal, nevertheless still explicit and significant as far as their literary output is concerned. The work aims at demonstrating the multiculturalism and multilingualism of Silesian authors, presenting and systematizing current state of knowledge, as well as at being an indication and encouragement to further studies that would facilitate the development of methodologically up-to-date synthesis of Silesian literature.A dictionary of Silesian writers is a kind of factual and bibliographical guide for academics of various specializations, it can serve as a teaching aid for secondary school learners, facilitating the implementation of objectives connected with regional education. It is also addressed at all enthusiasts of Silesian culture.

From Hostility to Friendship. The Habsburgs of Austria toward Poland during 1587–1592

Od wrogości do przyjaźni. Habsburgowie austriaccy wobec Polski w latach 1587–1592

Author(s): Aleksandra Barwicka-Makula / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Habsburgs; Sisigmund III Vasa; Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth descriptions

This work presents Habsburg-Polish relations during 1587–1592 in the most exhaustive and comprehensive possible way. Its new approach toward diplomatic relations of the Austrian branch of the Habsburgs with Sisigmund III Vasa and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is founded on the previously unused sources and a deeper analysis of archival materials, mainly from Vienna’s Haus-, Hof-, and Staatsarchiv, which enabled a reconsideration of a broad range of prevailing assessments and views in historiography. These issues are discussed in four chapters. Chapter one serves as an introduction to the topic. It concerns the main directions and goals of the House of Austria’s foreign policy in the second half of the 16th century and shows the organizational structure and methods of operation of the Habsburg diplomatic service. It also presents Austrian attempts to gain the Polish crown from the 1560s to 1586.Chapter two begins with a characterization of Rudolph II’s reign. Historiographic assessments of the emperor’s engagement in the affairs of countries under Habsburg rule (the Austrian branch) and his activity in the field of diplomacy were recounted. Next, the attempts of the four archdukes: Ferdinand, Ernest, Matthias, and Maximilian to gain the Commonwealth’s throne were presented, as well as their mutual rivalry during the interregnum following Stephen Báthory’s death. This part also highlighted the changing perception of the Swedish prince by the Prague court and its impact on Habsburg diplomacy. Moreover, the course of Archduke Maximilian’s military expedition for the Polish crown, as well as the causes of the election fiasco and the defeat at Byczyna were pointed out.Chapter three presents diplomatic measures undertaken by Rudolph II to free his brother Maximilian and the House of Austria’s stance on the archduke’s imprisonment along with their preferred resolution to the conflict with the Commonwealth. It also raises the issue of Sigismund III’s lack of political independence during the first years of his reign. In this part, a different approach from the one established in source literature to both papal mediation and Cardinal-Legate Ippolit Aldobarndini’s contribution to the peace process was shown. Based on the previously unused record of the Bytom–Będzin parley, which is part of the number 982 manuscript from the Kórnik Library collection, and the correspondence of Austrian commissaries with Rudolph II, barely known to Polish historians, an exact course of the peace talks has been reconstructed. The chapter is concluded with a discussion of the terms of agreement and reaction of the two parties to the news of a peace settlement, analyzed through the prism of ratification procedures. The final part of the book discusses the impact that Maximilian’s refusal to pledge the Treaty of Będzin and Bytom had on Habsburg-Polish relations and personal contacts of Sigismund III with the House of Austria. Moreover, it confronts young Vasa’s offer regarding the succession to the Commonwealth throne made to Archduke Ernst with the plans of the Emperor’s court to gain the Polish crown. The king’s negotiations with the Habsburgs during 1589–1592 are viewed as his attempt to step out of the shade, free himself from Zamoyski’s counsel, and take the initiative and the helm of the Polish-Lithuanian state’s foreign policy. The author sees Sigismund III Vasa’s pro-Austrian stance as a tool to build his own political camp based on the former supporters of the Habsburg candidacy. Chapter four ends with a description of actions of both parties leading to the Polish king’s marriage to Archduchess Anna of Austria, daughter of Charles II of Austria and Maria of Bavaria. This book should inspire further research on Habsburg-Polish relations in the modern era and discussions about the place and role of the Commonwealth on the political map of Europe at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Modern Calendariography of Silesia Up to the first half of the 18th century. Catalog

Nowożytna kalendariografia Śląska do połowy XVIII wieku. Katalog

Author(s): Agata Bryłka-Jesionek / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: calendar; chronology; history of mentality in the modern era

This work concerns the problem of modern Silesian calendariography. The choice of source material was determined by two factors: territorial and temporal. What is the subject matter of this work with reference to the territorial factor, are exclusively calendar publications issued in Silesian printing houses. They include the printing houses in the provinces of Wrocław, Legnica, Brzesko, Kłodzko, Nysa, Opava and Kożuchów. As to the chronological frame, it is determined by the date of the issue of the oldest Silesian calendar print that preserved to the present day. It is the year of 1562, when the Polish-language print entitled “Dzienne sprawy wedlie Niebieskich Biegow ná rok Panski. 1563 […]“ (“Daily matters according to Celestial Cycles for Anno Domini 1563 […]”), edited by Kacper Goski of Cracow. The final frames of this work are determined by the mid-eighteenth century, when significant changes of political character took place. They were a consequence of Silesia getting under Prussian rule resulting from the Peace Treaty of Berlin signed in 1742, which was reinforced three years later by the Peace Treaty in Dresden. This resulted in transformations in the field of legislation, which also had an impact on the calendar publishing market (the so-called Kalender- Patent issued by Frederick II). In total, 78 titles of calendar prints, which comprise 250 annuals, have been collected and cataloged. Despite the rudimentary state of preservation, it should be concluded that Silesian calendar publications were, to a large extent, periodic prints. They were issued mostly in German, occasionally also in Latin and Polish. Calendar publications were not only the effect of the work of their editors and publishers, they were also a specific manifestation of reading activity. Due to the notes made on their cards, their individuality and uniqueness were revealed. They became the trustees of the reader’s thoughts, and thus they played an important role in his/her life. Silesian calendar publications played an important role in the process of nowadays social communication. On their pages, since around the mid-seventeenth century, there had been presented texts reflecting the current state of knowledge in the fields of, among others, running a farm, geography, history, biology, medicine, chronology and astronomy. The aim of the editors was therefore not only to propagate knowledge of a practical nature, but also to expand the readers’ cognitive horizons and satisfy their inquisitiveness about the surrounding world. Reading the calendar printing was also supposed to provide entertainment. The texts published on the calendar pages give evidence of a considerable knowledge of the latest research results, since there were presented the views of well-known and respected, both ancient and modern, authorities. They were also often accompanied by the editors’ own reflections and observations. The calendar publications we are interested in may serve as a kind of measure of ideological changes within communities living in the area of Silesia. Therefore, they can be considered as a manifestation of the changes in the outlooks on life characteristic for a given epoch. The presence of astrological contents in calendar publications may be associated with manifestations of Renaissance thought, and the overabundance of them seems to be close to the ideas of the Baroque era. The face of this type of prints underwent far-reaching transformations in the 18th century, along with the movement of the Enlightenment, since at this time, alongside prints of astrological character, there were also those containing information about everyday life. In this way, calendar publications tried to meet the needs of the reader, thus becoming a kind of ‘mirror’ of social tendencies. They were also to perform the propaganda function, to integrate the circle of recipients around certain ideas and preferred values. The modern calendariography of Silesia is a manifestation of certain trends and fashions functioning within the contemporary society, which is indicated by a comparative analysis of Silesian calendar publications and the ones issued in other typographic centres. The thematic scope of calendariography of particular epochs may be evidence not only of ideological influences, but also of the then mentality within a given society. The texts placed in the calendar publications were, to some extent, to satisfy the needs of an average reader, which undoubtedly was vital to the commercial success of particular titles. These publications played an integrating role, as they were addressed to a wide range of recipients. Within their framework, the first manifestations of democracy and the formation of a civil society may be observed.

“What’s going on in politics, sir?” Or, on the mutual perception of news reporters and politicians in the media

„Cóż tam, panie, w polityce?” Czyli o wzajemnym postrzeganiu dziennikarzy i polityków w mediach

Author(s): Katarzyna Brzoza-Kolorz,Dagmara Głuszek-Szafraniec,Patrycja Szostok-Nowacka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: political journalism; mediatisation of politics; media politicization; media bias; media elites; political elites;

The following monograph constitutes the outcome of a research project entitled The relationship between the media and political elites in the context of the German experience, financed by the National Science Centre (OPUS 10, no. UMO -2015/19/B/HS5/00429). The authors present the findings of qualitative and quantitative analysis of the content of four newspapers: Newsweek Polska, Wprost, Polityka and Do Rzeczy. The articles were published in 2015, in the year of the presidential and parliamentary elections, and a time of a dynamic and multidimensional political discourse. The analysis is based on eleven thousand pieces published in the aforementioned newspapers. The main research aim of this study was to showcase the connections established between the media and the political elites on the pages of those four weekly newspapers. The assessment of the mutual relationships between the world of media and the world of politics constitutes, therefore, the core of the monograph. Other important elements include the debate regarding the sympathies and antipathies showcased in the research material as well as the search for an answer concerning the degree of bias present among the various editorial teams and the way that bias manifests itself. The authors attempt to indicate the trends present in Polish journalism as well as the characteristics of Polish opinion journalism. Moreover, they present opinions of politicians regarding the role of the mass media and their ultimate impact on the shape of the current political climate as well as the existing political processes. As a result, the authors arrive at a study which constitutes a diagnosis of Polish opinion journalism which aims to point out its specific characteristics, utilizing the already existing framework comprising of various theories of mass communication pertaining to the relationship between the world of politics and the world of media. The authors introduce a new concept of “biased silence,” characteristic of Polish opinion journalism. The research findings allow to present the general characteristics of the journalistic practice and showcase the differences between the analyzed newspapers in the way they present opinions on the world of politics and the way political bias manifests in their pieces, as well as demonstrate the formal and generic aspects of the given types of journalism they pursue. Moreover, content analysis of the research material can also serve as a starting point for further research on the state of Polish journalism, aimed towards the analysis of the attitudes of politicians and journalists themselves, as well as their relationships and the assessment of the quality of those relationships.

Local media of Cieszyn Silesia. History and the present time

Media lokalne Śląska Cieszyńskiego. Historia i współczesność

Author(s): Monika Kornacka‑Grzonka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Cieszyn Silesia

The monograph is a compendium of the knowledge about the local media of Cieszyn Silesia, which, being part of the historical and cultural regions of modern Poland, has preserved a strong regional identity. Not only does the paper organise the state of the knowledge about how the local media in this interesting region have been developing and functioning, but it also broadens the knowledge. […]The monograph has a problem-oriented structure and consists of three chapters that are substantively related to the dominant theme, which is the local media of Cieszyn Silesia. The content of the first chapter comprises reflections on the theory of local media and research practice. It defines the concept of local media, presents their typology and development after 1989, as well as limitations in their functioning. The issue of the local community is dealt with in the second chapter, where first the theory of the local community (including the so-called virtual community) is discussed and the concept of local and regional identity defined, and subsequently the characteristics of the community of Cieszyn Silesia and its territory is brought into focus, while the reference is made both to the complex history of this area and to the present day situation. The presentation of the local media in Cieszyn Silesia is the subject of deliberations in the third chapter. Firstly, the historical development of the local media – mainly the press, in this area until 1989, i.e. until the political and socio-political breakthrough beginning the systemic transformation of our country, has been characterised. Then, the transformations taking place on the local media market of this area after 1989 have been examined. The development of the local press segment [...] and the electronic media market of Cieszyn Silesia, including local radio, local television (mainly online) and local Internet portals […] have been separately presented. The paper ends with a summary of the studied issue through the presentation of the outline of the transformations of the contemporary local media in Cieszyn Silesia against the background of the nationwide processes in Poland. […]The reviewed paper constitutes a valuable publishing position, which apart from systematizing the studied issues, also enriches the general knowledge about the formation and functioning of the contemporary local media system in Cieszyn Silesia. It is also of specific practical utility primarily for activists and officials of the local government and regionalists, as well as for students of journalism and social communication as well as political science and sociology.

Poland’s Foreign Policy towards Latin America in the Post-Cold War Period

Polityka zagraniczna Polski wobec Ameryki Łacińskiej w okresie pozimnowojennym

Author(s): Justyna Łapaj-Kucharska / Language(s): Polish

The work is a compendium of information and a study of Polish-Latin American relations, with particular emphasis on the implications of Poland’s accession to the structures of the European Union in the context of the country’s policy towards Latin America. The monograph is the first in the literature on the subject in which the title issue has been presented within the framework of the entire post-cold war period, i.e. 1989/1990–2016, and in a comprehensive way, on the political, economic, scientific and cultural levels. The author has focused on the analysis of bilateral relations with Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela. The determinant of such a choice was the desire to discuss Poland’s relations with its main Latin American partners. In accordance with the government document Strategia RP w odniesieniu do pozaeuropejskich krajów rozwijających się [Strategy of the Republic of Poland with regard to non-European developing countries] of 2004, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico were included among the priority partners, while Colombia and Venezuela were defined as important. These are the Latin American countries with which Poland conducts political dialogue both bilaterally and multilaterally (within the EU or the Pacific Alliance, which includes three of the countries listed in the Strategy – Mexico, Chile and Colombia), and Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile account for the largest percentage of Poland’s trade with the region (about 75%). As far as the historical experience of mutual contacts is concerned, it should be noted that these countries, especially Brazil and Argentina, were the main directions of emigration from Poland to Latin America. The work also mentions Poland’s relations with other countries of the region, such as Cuba, Peru, Panama and Ecuador. The study is devoted to the post-war period, but it takes into account the context of Poland’s earlier policy towards Latin America, divided into the most characteristic stages, corresponding to continuity and change in the bilateral relations. It discusses Poland’s contacts with the countries of this region in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as in the 19th century, when there was an increased emigration of Poles, especially to Brazil (the so-called Brazilian fever) and Argentina. The title issue has been presented in the bilateral and multilateral dimension, taking into account the formal and legal basis and the results of meetings at the highest and lowest levels. Factors hindering and facilitating relations between Poland and Latin American countries and the position of these countries in the foreign policy of Poland have been identified. Determinants and tendencies in Polish policy towards the Latin American region, its manifestations, as well as dilemmas and challenges that appeared in the 21st century have been presented. Moreover, arguments for intensification of mutual relations in bilateral and multilateral forums and potential areas of cooperation in the field of political, economic, scientific and cultural relations have been indicated.

Epistemological and ontological neo-Kantianism. Ernst Cassirer – Martin Heidegger

Neokantyzm epistemologiczny i ontologiczny. Ernst Cassirer – Martin Heidegger

Author(s): Anna Musioł / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: neo-Kantianism; Ernst Cassirer; Martin Heidegger

The monograph constitutes a comparative analysis of two different philosophical projects. These projects share a common denominator of neo-Kantianism. This philosophical movement allows to juxtapose the analyzed concepts in relation to both Immanuel Kant’s system and possible post neo-Kantianism, understood as ontological interpretations of transcendentalism. For this reason, Kant’s philosophy is discussed through the prism of Ernst Cassirer’s scheme as a critic of cognition and Martin Heidegger’s theories as a philosopher of the establishment of metaphysics. Taking into account the pre-critical and critical aspect of Kant’s thought, I try to indicate the difference in the intellectual approaches. I reveal the differences in some measure, underpinning the historical and problem analysis (systematic analysis). The monograph consists of five chapters and constitutes an extended version of my doctoral dissertation.

The return to the Motherland? The Western and Northern Lands in the People’s Poland

Powrót do Macierzy? Ziemie Zachodnie i Północne w Polsce Ludowej

Author(s): Maciej Fic / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Motherland; People’s Poland

The Second World War, among numerous modifications in relation to Poland of the twenty-year interwar period caused considerable transformations of its state territory. In 1945, outside of Poland’s borders remained the so-called Eastern Borderlands lost to the Soviet Union — despite the misleading name, the said area encompassed close to a half of the interwar Second Republic of Poland. By way of reimbursement for the said lost, Poland gained from Germany the areas to the west and north of the 1939 Polish state borders. As a whole, this territory amounted to little over 100,000 sq. kilometres, and in 1939 was inhabited by circa 8.5 million people. The following areas were incorporated into Poland: West (Stettin/Szczecin) Pomerania, Lubusz Land, Lower Silesia, the western part of Upper Silesia (Opole Silesia), Warmia, Masuria and a part of Gdańsk Pomerania. The newly incorporated lands acquired many names in historiography and propaganda of the time: the “postulated lands,” “returning lands,” “Regained Lands,” or the Western and Northern Lands (hereafter ZZiP). The nomenclature became part and parcel of history politics instituted by the new authorities, which aimed at strengthening the “Piast Poland” vision (the state’s return to its “proper” national territory), meted out against the “Jagiellonian Poland” (understood as misguided Poland’s eastward expansionism). While planning the content of this book, the authors sought to restrict the contributors’ leeway pertaining to topics, particularly the territorial scope of the research presented. Instead of “vertical” perspective (i.e. presenting various spheres of activities undertaken across the entire ZZiP), the “horizontal” approach was taken, that is, the one showing the specific of the particular country areas comprising the lands in question. Our work is, therefore, a kind of journey through the subsequent, previously mentioned areas. (fragment of the introduction )

Cultural histories of travel

Kulturowe historie podróżowania

Author(s): / Language(s): English,Polish

Keywords: travel; history of travel; anthropology of travel; travel literature

This book is an attempt to define historically significant travel models. The variety of texts it contains allows for recreating continuity and change within the complex European discourse. The authors understand travel as a practice causing a transfer of our knowledge and a way to consolidate specific cultural patterns and define their broader contexts. Therefore, it has both symbolic and practical functions, because travel dynamizes history and perpetuates it, consolidates individual cultures from within and becomes a vehicle for mediating beyond their borders. Travel in the perspective outlined in this volume will enable us to see the movements, repetitions, and gaps between patterns, both those matrixing cultural practice and those related to the emergence of discursive orders focused around this practice.

Transcription in chamber music as a space for pianistic interpretation

Transkrypcja w muzyce kameralnej jako przestrzeń dla interpretacji pianistycznej

Author(s): Aleksandra Hałat / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Chambermusic; piano; substuncial transcription; interpretation; music

The subject of this monograph is the issue of creative development of a pianist interpretation in chamber music, with the consideration of various transcriptions. In order to fully cover the subject, the author of the paper has tried to systematize the term transcription, as well as presented the pedigree of the selected musical pieces, which are parts of works of art, in the background of chamber musical pieces of their composers: J. Brahms and D. Shostakovich. This monograph also covered the area of knowledge about the relationship between the evolution of chamber music with the accompaniment of piano and the development of the piano sound at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The aspect, which was undertaken in this study - the pianist interpretation in regard to the changing performance medium in the musical piece - was presented on the sample of substantial transcription, using selected elements of the musical work: dynamics, articulation, agogic and some elements of musical expressions. The analysis of the discussed issue was presented on the basis of stylistically diverse musical pieces: Sonata in E-flat major, op. 120 No. 2 for clarinet and piano and its transcription for viola and piano, as well as the transcription for violin and historical piano, and Sonata in D minor op. 40 by D. Shostakovich for cello and piano and its transcription for double bass and piano by James Rapport. Due to the need to show the creative role of the pianist in regard to the performance and sound opportunities of the instruments, which co-interpret the chamber musical piece, selections were made within instrumental duets with the participation of both string and wind instruments. The type of the substantial transcription was used in this work as a means to show the factors contributing to the individualization of the piano playing in chamber music and to present its different face depending on the characteristics of the chosen instrument of the co-interpreter.

Landscapes of Context

Krajobrazy kontekstu

Author(s): Marek Pacukiewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Landscape; context; theory of culture;metaphysics;

“Landscape” and „context”, being two constitutive elements of culture, allow for its comprehension and experience. These terms evoke the possibility of redefining the scope, the function and the possible form of culture in the times when humanities undermine both “theory” and “culture”.According to the author, any prospective theory of culture needs to be preceded by denotation of both “metaphysics” and “ontology”, the terms applied interchangeably in postmodern humanities. Metaphysics in the theory of culture could be based on Aristotle’s “first philosophy” which examines “being as being”; analogically, culture as a being could be specified according to its substance (ousia).

Through the Looking Glass. The World of Objects in Predictions and Tales (The wedding rites)

Зазеркалье. Предметный мир примет и поверий (Свадебный цикл)

Author(s): Piotr Czerwiński / Language(s): Russian

Keywords: semantics; beliefs; prophecies; folk signs and predictions; mentality; consciousness; understanding of the world

The paper deals with the Russian folk tales and predictions describing the wedding rites and roles of their participants with regard not only to the ceremony itself but also to its meaning. These elements, i.e. roles, action, meaning are reflected via the present and future states that the participants are and will be in. The fiancée is presented as a key character from the point of view of her role and meaning in the stages of the ceremony. The world of objects is described as a special one with regard to the reality and the impact this world has upon a human being and vice versa. The author suggests a number of attitudes towards the potential, virtual typologies connected with the meanings of the paradigmatic units. The units are presented with regard to their structure and position in general semantics.
