The Limits of Trade Union Freedoms in the Polish Legal System

Granice wolności związkowych w polskim systemie prawnym

Author(s): Jakub Gołaś / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: trade unions; employers' organisations; trade union freedoms; freedom of association; limits; limitations; self-governance; independence; autonomy, negative freedom; industrial relations

The issue of the limits of trade unions freedoms functioning in the Polish legal system is the scientific problem of the monograph. Trade unions freedoms should be seen as a fundamental guarantees of solidarity, dialogue and cooperation between social partners in shaping realities of domestic model of the social market economy. The research undertaken and presented in the publication allowed me to conduct a comprehensive characteristic and evaluation of the manner in which the national legislator formalises and restricts free functioning of social partners. The results of the study are also helpful in identifying specific deficiencies of the Polish legal system that should be recognised as major barriers to effective functioning and desired development of the union movement. The overall scientific goal of the monograph is to identify, systemise, characterise and evaluate limits of trade union freedoms in the context of the Polish legal system. In other words, the study presented in the publication aims at answering the question about how the national legislator restricts trade union freedoms and how such limitations should be formed in accordance with standards coming from biding international agreements. In order to reach the defined scientific objective it was necessary to analyse current legal system in terms of existing legal acts, actual judicature, literature and chosen statistical data regarding European and worldwide labour movements.

LITERATURE – SOCIETY – SYSTEM. Studies on Peter Handke, Siegfried Lenz, Botho Strauß, Dietrich Schwanitz and Peter Turrini

LITERATURA – SPOŁECZEŃSTWO – SYSTEM. Studia wokół Peter Handke, Siegfried Lenz, Botho Strauß, Dietrich Schwanitz i Peter Turrini

Author(s): Andrzej Denka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: systems theory, Niklas Luhmann; systemic literature studies; dispute; media; politics vs. Literature; German-language literature; late 20th and early 21st century

This monograph provides selected studies on writers of German and Austrian literature. These studies draw from particular aspects of Niklas Luhmann's Systems Theory, which, although developed within sociology, can be applied to other research fields, such as economics, law, political science, and finally, literary studies. The author of this monograph explains the possible applications of this theory to the issues of conflict, literary scandal, controversial engagements of writers, and also the variety of possible interpretations of literary texts. The conflict around last year’s Literary Nobel Prize winner, Peter Handke, which arose due to his engagement in support of the Serbian case, is presented here as a clash of opinions, as well as their adjustment to a particular line of argument, which, thanks to the media, aims at processing social irritation. In the case of Siegfried Lenz, the aim of the study is to prove the connection between his political views and purely literary activity in the light of substantial system distinctions. Such writers as Botho Strauß and Dietrich Schwanitz are presented here as ones who consciously adapt various theoretical systemic concepts to construct their own literary texts (essays, prose). When interpreting Peter Turrini’s play, on the other hand, the category of 'framing' has been applied along with the relationship between the internal and external references. These analyses are complemented by two theoretical chapters that provide an overview of the most important concepts of the systemic literary studies, which are relatively unfamiliar in Poland, by presenting them against the background of the scholarly tradition.

Poznań in names, names in Poznań

Poznań w nazwach, nazwy w Poznaniu

Author(s): Małgorzata Rutkiewicz-Hanczewska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Poznan; proper name; toponym; anthroponym; chrematonym; onomastics

The book is a popular science dictionary of the names of the most important public space features of present-day Poznań: districts, parks, streets, housing estates and squares, institutions, hotels, restaurants, pharmacies, hospitals, cinemas, theaters, churches, buildings, cemeteries, bridges, rivers and lakes. Among them are both historical and contemporary names, and alongside the official names there are also colloquial ones used only by the inhabitants of Poznań. The author explains their origins, the most important linguistic processes that led to their creation, the reasons for the changes that they have undergone throughout history, their declension patterns, structurally similar types of names of other urban features, similarities and differences between the names from other parts of the country, trends in the formation of the most recent names. At the same time, she emphasizes their universal dimension. These features reflect the spirit of their creators. They act as a kind of magnifying glass through which the inhabitants of Poznań looked at the world around them. The book explains the relationship of individual names with the topography of the city, as well as with historical, social and cultural circumstances. Since the publication takes the form of a nest dictionary, within each headword there is a discussion of other names related to the headword thematically, linguistically, and in terms of the time of coining and location.

Stefania Zahorska

Stefania Zahorska

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Stefania Zahorska; film criticism; review; essay; emigration; academic focus; comparative studies; confluence of arts

In the vast and varied output of Stefania Zahorska (1889-1961), including literary activity, reportage, publications on art history, philosophy, literature, sociology..., theoretical and critical reflection on film occupies a prominent place. She continued to write about film from 1927 almost until the end of her life; her last film review, published in London, was dated 1953. Stefania Zahorska was the most outstanding film critic of the interwar period in Poland. This was due not only to her literary and critical talent, independence and uncompromising judgements, but above all, to her erudition, extensive and in-depth education. When analysing a film, she saw much more than just the image on the screen. For over ten years, she was a regular reviewer for "Wiadomości Literackie" [Literary Matters], reviewing over 500 films. She also introduced film issues to many other socio-cultural and literary magazines. She was also interested in analysing film at an academic level, as evidenced by her speech at the 1927 Congress of Philosophy in Warsaw. As a lecturer (from 1921) at the Free Polish University (Wolna Wszechnica Polska), she introduced film into the programme of lectures on art. Her commitment to teaching is clearly visible in those of her texts in which she introduces the reader to issues such as the film avant-garde. Later on in her life, she wrote film reviews for the Polish émigré press in Paris and London. This critical edition of all of Stefania Zahorska's extremely valuable works on film, reveals her extremely modern way of looking at film as a work of art, which, as the author of reviews, analyses and essays, and even intervention materials, she sees in the broad social, cultural and political contexts of a quarter of a century of Polish culture both at home and abroad.

Public-law aspects of the participation of the SME sector in the process of achieving strategic goals of development policy

Publicznoprawne aspekty udziału sektora MŚP w procesie realizacji strategicznych celów polityki rozwoju / Aspectos de derecho público de la participación del sector de las PYMES en el proceso de implementación de los objetivos estratégicos...

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish,Spanish

Keywords: public law; development; Digital Single Market; SME sector;public procurement sector.;

The monograph entitled Public-law aspects of the participation of the SME sector in the process of achieving strategic goals of development policy is the result of the research by an international team of scientists from Poland, Spain and Chile. The issues covered by the analysis relate to activities with the highest priority from the point of view of socio-economic development, namely combating climate change and facing the challenges of digitization. Barriers to the use of the Digital Single Market mainly concern small and medium-sized enterprises, which are the dominant group of entities actively operating in the economy, and their activities and expenditures on innovation have a direct impact on the implementation of strategic development goals. The authors of the study, analyzing the provisions of EU law and national law systems, attempted to identify legal and administrative barriers to SME, to assess the effectiveness of existing support tools, to identify areas requiring intervention by the EU or national legislator, and to formulate de lege ferenda proposals for more effective support for SME. The monograph includes texts prepared in Polish and Spanish with extensive translations of their summaries.

Early support for the development of disabled children in the family environment

Wczesne wspomaganie rozwoju dzieci z niepełnosprawnościami w środowisku rodzinnym

Author(s): Andrzej Twardowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: development; early support; children with disabilities; family environment

The book is the first monograph in Poland devoted to the issue of early support for child development. The author uses all the significant theoretical and empirical achievements of both Polish and foreign authors to present his own model of early support for child development focused on interactions between parents and their children. He distinguishes six features, which should determine interactions influencing development: emotional bonds with a child, sensitive responses to the child’s behavior, sharing the topic of interaction, adjusting actions to a child’s needs and abilities, reciprocity, and guiding the child’s behavior. The book is addressed to all people interested in the issues of early support directed to young children, their parents and families, also in the intervention dimension.

Colours in Bulgarian language and culture

Kolory w języku i kulturze bułgarskiej

Author(s): Mariola Walczak-Mikołajczakowa / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Bulgarian language; color names; phraseology; toponymy; anthroponymy; chrematonymy; folklore

The monograph considers colour naming in modern Bulgarian in all its possible aspects. The author's inquiries focus on the origins of individual names, and then analyze their contribution to the formation of antonyms, toponyms, chrematonyms and phytonyms. She also presents that part of phraseology whose important component from the point of view of semantics are the names of colours. The linguistic analysis is complemented by a presentation of the names of colours preserved in texts important from the point of view of the history of the Bulgarian language and in folk creativity, as well as a study of the connotations which the names of colours evoke, i.e. the establishment of their symbolic meaning.

Constructing Knowledge in Written and Asynchronous Online Interactions

Konstruowanie wiedzy w pisemnych i asynchronicznych interakcjach online

Author(s): Joanna Górecka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: foreign language studies; advanced foreign language learning; computer-assisted language learning; asynchronous and written online communication; forum; interactive knowledge construction; discussion; argumentation

The topic discussed in the book concerns computer-assisted teaching and learning, which is an important area in contemporary foreign language teaching. The main object of consideration is the possibility of organizing virtual space group tasks in which learners undertake knowledge construction activities. My focus is on the activities of initiating and conducting online interaction which correspond to the genre properties of rational discussion in two contexts: a remote learning platform (interaction conducted within a student group) and online information websites (open and public communication). The study presented in the book had two main objectives. The first was to propose a model of online academic discussion that takes into account the specificity of the processes of constructing meaning online and the objectives of FL studies. The second aim was to identify the sources of difficulties involved in the implementation of online work and to propose additional tasks which may allow teachers and their students to negotiate their task representations and to adapt their activities to the generic requirements of the argumentative/academic discussion model. The conclusions confirm the validity of the diagnosis at the basis of the didactic intervention and support the teacher-researcher's construction of personal knowledge.

How to explain a picture?

Jak wyjaśnić obraz?

Author(s): Stanisław Czekalski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: art history; picture; methodology; philosophy of science; historical explanation; theory of interpretation

The book provides a synthesis of the methodological issues in art history as a discipline that in the 20th century chose the methodical and objective explanation of images as one of its main tasks. Since the time when W. Dilthey's methodology distinguished the humanities, the most eminent art historians have sought to strengthen its position among these sciences by relying on the rigors of scientific objectivity and empiricism, accuracy and correctness, verifiability and cognitive certainty, in line with the natural science model. Can and if so how can an interpretation come closer to the explanatory model, and how can it fulfill the role of a historical explanation of the works of painting? How should it be based on the solid ground of facts and the logic of inferences? What research methodologies can ensure the correctness of explanations, verifiability and the accuracy of the results? Such methodological issues were connected with the reflections of a number of scholars. Among whom E. Gombrich played a special role, first as a spokesman for the turn in iconology towards Popper’s deductionism, and then as an inspiration and point of reference for the next generation of academics, some of whom followed the rigors of normative methodology, while others looked for alternatives or developed a narrative methodology. The book presents significant relationships linking methodologically oriented art history not only with various concepts of general methodology and the philosophy of science, but also with another important source of inspiration, namely the models of inference used by detectives in crime novels.

From genre to image

Od gatunku do wizerunku

Author(s): Magdalena Szulc / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Social media; social media; image creation; public relations; fashion

The monograph deals with image self-creation on social media among fashion bloggers from the perspective of literary genology. It aims to indicate the relationship between the genre of selected social media channels and the image created through them, and to confirm the hypothesis that each of these social media channels can be defined as a separate genre or macrogenre, which in effect impacts on the type of activities undertaken within it. The work is divided into four chapters: Chapter One presents the relationship between fashion and image creation; Chapter Two undertakes an analysis of social media as an area of image creation; the third chapter considers social media from the genological point of view; while the fourth and final chapter is devoted to the self-creation of fashion bloggers on social media.

Mary in the service of Christian humanism

Maryja w służbie chrześcijańskiego humanizmu

Author(s): Adam Wojtczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Mary; post-conciliar Mariology; Christian humanism; pope Francis

In the face of ever increasing wounds, when many people do not know how to heal them, or they do not believe healing is possible, pope Francis appeals for “a revolution of tenderness”, which is a path to renew Christian humanism. He urges Christians to create it. It is going to help convert callous hearts into open hearts full of love. Only “seeing with our hearts” enables us to say “no” to globalized indifference and provisional thinking. In connection to this, the pope proposes life based on intimate relationship with Mary. The present times are Her times. It is well worth joining Mary in Her school, since She teaches the alphabet of Christian humanism. This issue belongs to main themes of Francis’s teaching. It is not all about the doctrine, but rather about life attitude. He assumes that Mary is the best image of Christian humanity in the practice of daily life. We need Her genius and womanly style in order for the theological reflection to be less abstract or theoretical, but delicate, descriptive, and practical. Francis’s project of Mary’s humble participation in the work of Christian humanism has not been examined as yet. Actually, it is a concept of crucial importance to his Mariology. This present monograph aspires, at least partially, to fill the gap. It does not embrace the whole subject and is not exhaustive. It is a valuable contribution, which helps to comprehend the originality of pope Bergoglio’s Mariology.

The dancing state

Państwo tańczące

Author(s): Juliusz Grzybowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Plato; dance; Laws; war dances; Corybantes; Pyrrhichios; Marsyas; Gorgon;labyrinth;

Dance is often neglected in studies on Plato, just as it is neglected in other situations, as an inferior art, to seme extent in keeping with the quasi-Platonic paradigm of the superiority of the soul over the body. Quasi-platonic, because in dance the body is endowed with a soul, and it even seems that it is in dance that we should look for the moment when the soul is most clearly present in the body. This is probably the reason why Plato eagerly turns to dance metaphors when he seeks the most appropriate way of talking about the soul. This is the case, for example, in the Phaedrus. Funnily enough, recently the discourse on dance has very often adopted an anti-Platonic formula, as if overcoming Platonism were an indispensable condition for a proper understanding of dance. Of course, there is a difference between Platonism and Plato, perhaps even an immeasurable one, but this anti-Platonic battle, which would like to present itself as an action or reaction that valorises the body, regardless of the nobleness of its intentions and perhaps of the benefit it brings with it, is something inelegant and quite possibly something that is simply unfair both to Plato and to dance. It is the case, rather, that the author of the book wishes to prove that Plato has much to say about dance. To my knowledge, nobody thought about dance as seriously as Plato, as evidenced by the omnipresence of dance in Plato's Laws dialogue. Plato initially classifies dance according to three criteria, and so we have wild and civilised dances, serious and frivolous dances, and war and peace dances. This somewhat technical outline of classification obviously raises a number of doubts and, let us add without further ado, doubts on the part of Plato himself. But this technical outline of the classification is also an interpretation of the state, and at the same time of what is human but nonetheless alien to the state. That which is alien still remains in relation to the state, even when it is a relation of an exile (wild dances) or of a disenfranchised citizen (frivolous dances).

Aesthetic experience as the basis of integral cognition from the perspective of pragmatic aesthetics

Doświadczenie estetyczne jako podstawa poznania integralnego w perspektywie estetyki pragmatycznej

Author(s): Anna Ziółkowska-Juś / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: integral knowledge; aesthetic experience; pragmatic aesthetics; feelings; senses; imagination; intuition; consciousness

The aim of the monograph is to conceptualize integral cognition based on John Dewey’s concept of aesthetic experience. Such cognition is an alternative to unilateral intellectual cognition. Integral cognition is not focused on the intellect, but requires the unification of the intellect with the senses, feelings and corporeality, as well as with imagination and intuition, that is, the aesthetic sphere. The key factor in integral cognition is the consciousness that focuses not only on the mind but also on feelings and corporeality. Practising this type of cognition leads not only to the acquisition of information but also to improvements in the quality of life and experience, the holistic development of the human being, inner harmony and satisfaction. In modern western culture, the practice of integral cognition poses an important challenge.

History, Politics and the Media

Historia, polityka i media

Author(s): Filip Kubiaczyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: history; politics; media; football; Spain; Catalonia; racism

In this book, the author continues his research on Spanish football, which is impossible to escape from. Together with the previous one (History, nationalism and identity. The thing about football in Spain, 2020), it forms a kind of football diptych. In this, he focuses on showing how history, politics and the media in the country on the Ebro are intertwined thanks to football, which has turned into a working instrument of the official discourse of power. On the one hand, by referring to the history of Spain, specific political activities and media reports, it shows the importance of politicians, presidents of football associations and clubs and journalists in creating the image of Spanish football, and on the other, how the ubiquitous social media allows those excluded from this discourse or those who are critical of it, undertaking various types of activities and social campaigns aimed at breaking it and blurring it.

Athos

Author(s): Aleksander, Wojciech Mikołajczak,Rafał Dymczyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Holy Mount Athos; Orthodox; Hesychasm; sense of hearing; Actor Theory NetWork (ANT); affective turn

The inquiries presented in this monograph cover the audible dimension of the religious and cultural heritage created by the Orthodox monastic communities that have existed for a thousand years on the Holy Mount Athos in Greece. The research shows the scope and method of using the sense of hearing and sounds as creators and receptors of material and spiritual reality, manifested in liturgical singing, art, as well as in mysticism, prayer and the everyday way of life of monks. It is also about the specificity of the church architecture, subordinated to the acoustics of the voice. The scale of the involvement of hearing in the creation and interpretation of Athos reality is determined by two factors – the extraction of sounds from the creations of nature, the human vocal apparatus and the works of human hands. As a result of the auditory integration of the world of sounds, the acoustic landscape of the Holy Mountain is created. It is an expression of the emotive perception of reality, which thus acquires a deeply human dimension. It fits in with the metaphysical perspective of experiencing God in sonic hierophany. The use of the sense of hearing in this experiencing the Athos sacrum is described in the following chapters, taking into account 5 aspects of the sound landscape of the Holy Mountain: (1) the specificity of the auditory experience of the sacred, (2) the characteristics of silence as a space of hesychasm, (3) voices of nature, (4) sounds produced in the space of culture, (5) liturgical singing.

Everywhere and always... Jews

Wszędzie i zawsze… Żydzi

Author(s): Bohdan Głębocki / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Jews; national camp; press; political commentary; 1930s; Poland

In the interwar period, Jews constituted the second largest national minority in the Republic of Poland. The Jewish minority did not have a territorial character, and its representatives could be found all over the country, although their distribution was obviously not even. The so-called Jewish question was one of the most important issues in Poland at that time, affecting all spheres of life. It was certainly the most important issue for the supporters of what was broadly defined as the national camp. Of course, Jewish themes also figured prominently in the national press and journalism of the time – it is no coincidence that the nationalists' message was Judeocentric. The number of publications on the Jewish community rose sharply after 1931 and remained at a high level until the end of 1938. The field of research is therefore extremely broad, not least because of the division of the national camp in the 1930s into numerous groups, often hostile to each other. Opinions that often sound somewhat exotic to the contemporary reader were expressed in the press and political commentary about the large Jewish community in the last period of its existence under the conditions of Polish independence. These opinions allow for a better understanding of complicated Polish-Jewish relations and that now non-existent multinational society.

Between apocalypse and melancholy. Oleś Ulianenko – Writings, Contexts, Memories

Między apokalipsą a melancholią. Oleś Ulianenko – twórczość, konteksty, wspomnienia

Author(s): Anna Horniatko-Szumiłowicz,Marzanna Kuczyńska,Przemysław Lis-Markiewicz,Oksana Puchonska,Jarosław Poliszczuk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Oles Ulianenko; noir tradition; Ukrainian literature; Bulgarian contexts; interview; memoirs

The monograph Between Apocalypse and Melancholy. Oles Ulianenko – Writings, Contexts, Memories offers an analysis of selected aspects of the life and prose works of Oles Ulianenko (1962-2010), an outstanding contemporary Ukrainian writer, in the Ukrainian and Bulgarian historical and literary contexts and in the light of the latest literary theories. The monograph was written by scholars from both Poland and Ukraine, including Yaroslav Polishchuk, Marzanna Kuczynska, Oksana Puchonska, Anna Horniatko-Szumilowicz, and Przemyslaw Lis-Markiewicz. The core of the monograph consists of scholarly texts dealing with key aspects of Oles Ulianenko's creative legacy. The monograph also has an appendix containing three memoirs written by Mykhailo Slaboshpytskyi, Pavel Wolwacz and Ihor Ostrowski, translated into Polish. It is worth noting that the latter is being published for the first time. The memoirs paint a portrait of Ulianenko as an unconventional artist, completely devoted to the creative process, and at the same time, as an alienated man entangled in the extremely difficult Ukrainian reality of the late 1980s and early 1990s - a man who till the very end was tormented by deep existential issues and moral dilemmas. Courtesy of Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi, the monograph contains selected photographs of Oles Ulianenko, from his childhood, youth, and adult life, right until his premature death.
