Medieval Jewellery: Archaeological finds from South Moravia

Středověký šperk: Archeologické nálezy z jižní Moravy

Author(s): Věra Šlancarová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Czech Republic; South Moravia; archaeological finds; medieval jewellery;

The present work represents the first comprehensive survey of medieval jewellery located in museum depositories, galleries and archaeological institutions of South Moravia. Into the collection, the author has included items from 79 localities: 45 urban towns, 11 castles and 23 other locations (current and former villages and cultural sites). The selection has been limited to the High Middle Ages, i.e. mainly to the 13th–15th centuries, possibly extending into older and younger periods. The core of the work is comprised of a catalogue of objects with drawings or photographic documentation accompanied by detailed descriptions. The catalogue of finds is fully available in electronic form in the Digital Library of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, Brno. In the analytical part of the thesis, the objects are evaluated in terms of typology and morphology, including comparisons with finds from other locations. This allows the jewellery to be set in contemporaneous context in terms of its functional, aesthetic and symbolic significance.

Metallurgical Production Sphere in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands at the End of the Přemyslid Era

Metalurgická produkční sféra na Českomoravské vrchovině v závěru přemyslovské éry

Author(s): Petr Hrubý / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Czech Republic; Bohemian-Moravian Highlands; end of Přemyslid Era; metallurgical production;

To this day, problems like technological practice, infrastructure of mines and smelteries or occupational spectrum and living conditions in mining settlements have been rather studied by a specific group of archaeologists. However, it is evident that silver production, which was a characteristic phenomenon of later Middle Ages in the Czech lands, remains only an abstract concept when we do not acquire as much as possible knowledge about the mine workings, preparatory plants, metallurgical facilities and mining settlements from the end of the Přemyslid era. The main objective therefore did not consist in description of political situation connected with the 13th century boom of silver mining in Bohemia, emergence of mining administration, mining rights or minting reform; all this was already done many times. The aim of the book is to clearly outline the situation with ore mining and metallurgy in medieval landscape. The research methods applied meet the standards of interdisciplinary approach, but the essence of the topic is rooted in history.

Bridges near and far: One hundred years of the Department of German, Scandinavian, and Netherlands Studies

Mosty blízké i vzdálené: Století Ústavu germanistiky, nordistiky a nederlandistiky

Author(s): / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Czech Republic; Brno; Germanic Studies; Scandinavian Studies; Netherlands Studies; 100 years anniversary;

One hundred years of Germanic Studies in Brno equates to a hundred years of attempting to define the profile of a philological discipline situated very close, in a historical and geographical sense, to the identity of the university, the city and the whole country. After World War II, the Department of Germanic Studies began to build bridges towards the more distant cultures of Scandinavia and the Netherlands.The text focuses on the search for new and appropriate methods of learning as well as sharing competences as long-term objectives in the developmental process, as captured in the mirror of changing societal conditions during the century. The publication presents portraits of those scientific and pedagogical personalities directly or indirectly connected to Germanic Studies, such as the life and work of Professor Antonín Beer and his successors, the work of Professor Josef B. Michl who opened up perspectives toward the north, and the work of Emmy Máčelová which has had an influence on contemporary Dutch and which is firmly anchored in the European branch of the discipline. The photographs used in the publication document the activities of foreign lecturers and our contacts with outstanding experts from the world of Germanic Studies.

Criticism in Motion: Literary Criticism and Metacriticism of the 1990s

Kritika v pohybu: Literární kritika a metakritika 90. let 20. století

Author(s): Marek Lollok / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Czech Republic; literary criticism; metacriticism; 90s;

The book deals with the Czech literary criticism and metacriticism of 1990s, primarily in the form in which they have been appearing in literary journals of the period. Its main purpose is to explore the topic contextually as well as to evaluate it from today’s perspective. The book is divided into the eight parts: Introduction; Retrospectives; Anticipations; Postmodernist Criticism; Catholic, Christian, Spiritual etc. Criticism; Disputes over Authenticity, Critical Reflexions and Conclusion. They are relatively autonomous, but mutually corresponding; within these frames the most significant issues of literary criticism and metacriticism of the period are discussed. This approach provides a large scope of various points of view enabling the examination of the subject matter not merely in the strict chronological order but rather in the complex, multilateral (however sometimes overlapping) way. Except of the first and last one each chapter results in the summarizing and concluding résumé emphasizing the main points of the prior partial interpretations and highlighting their most important consequences. The first chapter provides a general introduction into the topic of literary criticism and metacriticism, its terminology, periodization and the overall theoretical background. To the chief concepts belongs the idea of “discourse” in the predominantly stylistic sense (i. e. discourse as interweawing text with context). The structure of the book is grounded in the idea of the synoptic-pulsatory model of literary history (coined by Peter Zajac and Dalibor Tureček), that is to say the understanding literature as a network “in progess” rather than a perfect stationary (categorical) system. In the following two chapters we explore two prevailing tendencies of Czech literary criticism at the beginning of 1990s. Then, relatively a great attention was paid to the matters of the past: numerous participants were looking back into the (not very distant) history, recapitulating and revising the prior development. Later on, the debates about the future of Czech literature prevailed and the specific atmosphere of waiting for the Great Critic or the Great Work of Art was established. In the next pair of chapters we examine two of the most recognizable types (streams) of critical thinking and writing in 1990s: Literary criticism under the influence of postmodernism and Criticism based on Christian belief. The former presents the context of postmodern thinking, mentions its chief representatives and discusses some particularities attributed to postmodernism in the contemporary Czech environment, the latter inquires the metamorphoses of Catholic (Christian) literary criticism, its platforms (especially the journal Souvislosti) as well as some concrete examples of this sort of literary reflection (first of all by Martin C. Putna, the most influential Catholic reviewer at that time). In the fifth chapter we examine the ongoing discussion about so called “authenticity” in literature which was accelerated by the enormous and continuously expanding popularity of literary diaries, memories, documentary literature etc. We also analyze the controversies concerning Jan Lopatka’s extremely critical approach and observe the extensive usage of the term “authenticity” in literary debates and its relevance as a criterion. Additionally we take a deeper look into the long-lasting antagonism between the magazine Tvar and Kritická Příloha Revolver Revue (including their prominent authors Pavel Janoušek and Michael Špirit); moreover, we investigate the most frequent arguments and strategies occuring in these disputes. The sixth chapter comments on some of the concrete reviews dealing with the most important Czech prose works published in 1990s (namely Celý život by Jan Zábrana, Jak se dělá chlapec by Ludvík Vaculík, Výchova dívek v Čechách by Michal Viewegh, Nesmrtelnost by Milan Kundera, Sestra by Jáchym Topol and finally Kniha Kraft by Martin C. Putna). These books and authors belong to the most reflected ones during the period in question. We primarily focus on the general values and methods of the most acclaimend literary critics of that time, however, a number of minor noteworhy contributions are not left out. The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the previous analysies of metacritical texts by the concrete views into the real “everyday” critical practice concerning particular works of art. In the Conclusion part we put forward a synthesis of what we have described/ interpreted separately. We have identified several prominent topics that have gradually emerged in 1990s’ discussions about literature and literary criticism, such as dealing with the past, new situation of Czech literature after 1989, its suppositional future development, question of autonomy of literature, its relationship to reality, social relevance, “authenticity”, (im)possibility of normative (authoritative) approaches in literary criticism, large gap between the “high” and popular literature and some others. A number of them are still valid and highly topical.

Bottom-up Linguistics: Perspectives and Explorations with a Postscript on Language and Reality

Author(s): Paul Rastall / Language(s): English

Keywords: linguistics; language; analysis; linguistic units; bottom-up approach;

Bottom-up Linguistics offers an alternative to most mainstream views of language and linguistic analysis. The approach involves seeing linguistic units and relations in their multi-dimensional diversity, and as adaptations to communicational need and for the construction of verbal reality. Generalisations are built up from observations, and diversity within and between languages is respected. Both information and signal properties of speech are considered.

Phenomenological-pragmatist interpretation of the hyper-connectivist world: on topics of philosophy of information:

Fenomenologicko-pragmatistická interpretace hyperkonektivistického světa: k problémům filosofie informace

Author(s): Michal Černý / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: information; philosophy; education;

The presented monograph is a source of critical reflection of the philosophy of information, which is strongly related primarily to topics close to the philosophy of education. It is based on the work of Luciano Floridi. I have a new grasp of his thoughts and arguments, at least in three ways. I read Floridi’s thoughts (fundamentally differently structured) with the context of standard philosophy as such – it follows the cosmological, logical, epistemic, ontological, linguistic aspects. It is based on a course I have been teaching (with my colleagues) for many years at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno. In the monograph, I offer many topics that are almost misunderstood in literature. They analyze the relationship of information and paradox, the association of information to time and space, or the philosophy of education. These topics are open and can be used for further research in this area. The second original approach is the reflection of corporeality and pragmatism. Pragmatism is represented primarily by Mark Johnson and George Lakoff. Their emphasis on the ecological perception of thought and on the body as a fundamental key to understanding being is strongly evident in the book. This “new generation” of pragmatic philosophers influenced by cognitive sciences must be taken very seriously in philosophical discourse. The study also emphasizes the ideas of Martin Heidegger, who is perceived very critically outside the village of his admirers for various reasons. We believe that his new reading or new grasp of some of his ideas offers an original approach to the philosophy of information, which will differ in many ways from the way it is commonly grasped by “true Haideggrians”. Of course, we will also refer to his pupils in this interpretation scheme, especially Jan Patočka and Hannah Arendt. Outside these two great traditions, three personalities are essential to our reading of the philosophy of information, but it is difficult to put them in any particular stream or direction. I, therefore, take them pragmatically-phenomenologically, although I know that many of their ideas could be conceived differently. These are Henri Bergson, Martin Buber and Piere Teilhard de Chardin. The resulting book offers a systematic examination of individual facets of the new world – a world that is hyper-connectivity, for which it is not possible to effectively and consistently introduce the differences between online and offline, between man and machine. A world in which we abandon the figure of thought based on “either-or”, and move towards a more ecological, holistic, emphasizing a continuum of a particular environment. We then explore this environment. The world we are thrown into is fundamentally different from the world in which Heidegger could study his ancient philosophers, or Bergson could study the role of memory in the constitution of the human person. It is a world that is fundamentally transformed by digital technology, in which connectivity is one of the fundamental characteristics of the world. This phenomenon leads to the fact that “traditional philosophical production” reflects the world rather than the real world and fixes itself in a position where it is not capable of new radically significant statements. My monograph is a contribution to getting out of this position and the modern philosophy of information. The philosophy of information is a suitable tool for solving a wide range of problems we face.

Keywords: Czech Republic; film; cinematography; Czech Short Film; 50s;

The collective monograph summarizes the results of the research in the history of the Czech short film of the 1950s, conducted by students of the Department of Film Studies and Audiovisual Culture at Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno. Studies focusing on particular areas of industrial, agricultural, army, sports, cultural and other kinds of films discuss the cultural-political and economic conditions of developing this type of work, a thematic link with the requirements of the contracting authorities (especially the state), and their relation to other media that contracting institutions used to spread the same type of message. Besides the context, the essays examine also rhetorical and stylistic features of films. Two of the texts focus on specific distribution windows which short films entered namely the People's Film University of and cinemas called Čas (Time). Among others, these texts show that despite the programmatic approach the authorities failed to apply its cultural policy as expected. Studies balance ideological, economical and entertaining potential of short films, a show in which cases which one of them pushed and thus to what extent films understood as useful servants were really helpful.

Liberal Democracy in Times of Crisis: The Perspective of Political Philosophy

Liberální demokracie v době krize: Perspektiva politické filosofie

Author(s): / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: liberal democracy; crisis of democracy; deliberative democracy; political representation; division of power; constitutionalism and populism; dignity; human rights; public reason; majority principle;

Liberal democracy seems to be facing systemic threats that can be no longer labelled as normal oscillations in trust or explained as retreat of political activity to non-electoral participatory spheres. This volume brings together several key debates in political philosophy and theory which aim to provide responses to the perceived difficulties of liberal democracies. The authors share the conviction that the announced crisis of liberal democracy has important political roots – in other words, that its origins are to be primarily looked for in the normative background and institutional structure of extant liberal-democratic political systems. At the same time the book aims to provide an “advanced introduction” to contemporary debates in political philosophy, so that both students and researchers can draw on a balanced exposition of some central problems which animate political thinking about deeper roots of the systemic crisis of liberal democracy.

Quality in Education: content focused approach to analysing and improving instruction

Kvalita (ve) vzdělávání: obsahově zaměřený přístup ke zkoumání a zlepšování výuky

Author(s): Jan Slavík,Vladislav Mužík,Josef Trna,Tomáš Janko,Veronika Lokajíčková,Jindřich Lukavský,Eva Minaříková,Jiří Sliacky,Zuzana Šalamounová,Simona Šebestová,Pavel Zlatníček,Naďa Vondrová,Tomáš Janík / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: education; quality; content focused approach; methodology;

The book introduces the concept of content-focused approach to analysing and improving instruction. Compared to current approaches, the focus on the content dimension of learning processes, which is the core of didactics, is more consistent. Didactics deals with the issue how to effectively teach and learn what is considered culturally worthy and personally meaningful, hence the focus on educational content. Educational content is not understood as a static set of items (to be) memorized, but as the overall educational potential of disciplines that pupils encounter during their time at school. The book appertains to the slogan quality of/in education. Quality is understood from the dynamic point of view – with regard to how teachers plan, realize, and evaluate instruction. The regard for quality – as the distinction between better and worse in the professional sense – is accompanied by consideration and justification of alternatives. With the aim in mind to offer teachers-reflective practitioners a systematic method for improving instruction based on its reflection, this book introduces the method of AAA (annotation, analysis and alteration). The method is illustrated with ten didactic case studies from different disciplines of school education with the prospect of generalization across domains. The authors believe that the book opens the way towards the improvement of instruction based on reflection, and with time towards a new (productive) culture of teaching and learning.

Author(s): Jana Jašková / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: English language; specific purposes; higher education; pedagogy;

University teachers of English for Specific Purposes go through a rather difficult period during the first years of their profession because within their studies at universities they are usually prepared for teaching English for General Purposes at secondary schools. Therefore, their previous education does not provide them with the necessary knowledge they could use to create their pedagogical content knowledge. The book aims to familiarize the reader with these teachers' subjective perceptions of their own professional beginnings, specifically from their retrospective view of the first three years of teaching English for Specific Purposes at universities. The novice teachers' professional development has been investigated on the basis of a mixed research design where the method of semistructured interviews carried out with several respondents has been supplemented with electronic questionnaires sent to all Czech university teachers of English for Specific Purposes.
