Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on the latest crisis in the development of EU-Turkey relations, which began in the autumn of 2006, when the European Commission published a critical evaluation report, and when the clash over Turkey’s (non)compliance with the customs union was imminent, which occurred at the EU summit in December of that year. Although crises in mutual relations have occurred in the past, until now the cause has mainly been Turkey’s internal political instability. The current situation (with the exception of the campaign for the presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey in the spring and summer of 2007) is different. Turkey is enjoying economic growth, and the 1990s, marked by the short life of coalition governments and the general instability of the party system, have been replaced by a period of stable, single-party rule by the Justice and Progress Party (AKP).
