Summary/Abstract: The South Caucasus is gaining importance, which has not gone unnoticed by the institutions of the European Union. Its geographical location predetermines the South Caucasus to play the role of an alternative transport route for oil and natural gas extracted in the Caspian Sea and Central Asia. For the European Union, which is looking for ways to diversify its energy dependence on these raw materials imported mainly from Russia, the Caspian Sea is one of the few suitable alternatives. The region also has considerable potential as a transport junction between Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Russia. The EU has therefore in the past financially supported the regional projects TRACECA (TRAnsport Corridor Europe Caucasus Asia) and INOGATE (INterstate Oil and GAs Transport to Europe). However, the successful fulfillment of the purpose of these projects is complicated by unresolved, so-called “frozen”, conflicts in the region.
