Summary/Abstract: With regard to the history of Romanian writing, it must be noted that it is of considerable antiquity, being attested in documents as early as the 12th century – an indication that the language was already fully formed by that time. Today, there should be no doubt that Romanian has been spoken in this region since ancient times, even though Church Slavonic came to be used in official state contexts as well as in ecclesiastical settings. A key piece of evidence demonstrating that Romanian was already a developed and functioning language when Slavonic was adopted in certain domains is the linguistic fact that no grammatically complete sentence – comprising both subject and predicate – can be constructed solely from words of Slavic origin, despite the fact that approximately one-sixth of the Romanian lexicon is derived from Slavic sources.
