Summary/Abstract: In this paper we examine the distribution of four categories in the early lexical development of children acquiring Bulgarian, especially the presence and trajectory of the so-called nominal/noun bias, which has often been assumed to be a universal characteristic of language development. The data for Bulgarian reveal a significant similarity with what was found for Italian and American children, but also some differences regarding the use of “social” words and the parallel accumulation of vocabulary in these categories.
