Summary/Abstract: A study of language development (word knowledge) of a sample of 382 children in Bulgaria between the ages of 16 and 30 months found effects of maternal education level as one of the best indicators of socio-economic status (SES) of the family environment of children. The analyses revealed that the association between maternal education level and early childhood language development is most clearly evident in the age group between 24 and 30 months of age. The data were collected with the Bulgarian adaptation (VERBA) of the well-known MacArthur Bates Communicative Development Inventory, a parent report instrument in checklist format with information about the words a child says, their age, SES indicators, health status, etc.
