Summary/Abstract: “Our age is the age of anthologies” – Władysław Tatarkiewicz’s thesis, articulated as early as at the turn of the 1980s, continues to be relevant. The anthology seems to be one of the forms of a unit of silva of paramount importance for modern culture – which is indeed condemned to a sort of selection of writing which floods the bookshelves of bookstores. In the volume which we present to the reader we examine above all the modern literary anthologies (of the 20th and the 21st centuries), although we do not fail to take into account the historical context which enables us to perceive and to understand the changes which take place. The articles collected in the book present the form in question in terms of its theoretical, historical-literary and legal aspects; they take into account the extremely important environment-related situation – the social and the geographical situation of the anthology, its association with a certain symbolic community in the country and in emigration; they also present two factors which determine the form of the selection – the subject and the figure of the anthologist. The poetics of anthologistic forms is also considered in a broader context: as a phenomenon which is directly associated with the culture of quotation, as one of the more interesting and heretofore unexplored manifestations of intertextuality.

Theauthor points out that the anthology remains an underinvested genre in the Polish literarymilieu wherein dictionaries and literary encyclopedias often fail to dedicate duespace to the term, and monographs and articles do not do it justice either.

- Page Range:22-35

- Keywords:anthology; crown genre; genealogy; citation; intertextuality
- Summary/Abstract:By referencing genealogical conclusions drawn by Ireneusz Opacki in his article on the interweaving of generic forms as the marker of the evolution of poetry (Krzyżowanie się postaci gatunkowych jako wyznacznik ewolucji poezji), the author poses a hypothesis, that the anthology is an overlooked and wrongly belittled “royal genre” of our times. At the source of the form, as its etymology suggests, are the elementary models of collecting and binding (gr. anthologia ‘a collection of flowers, a bouquet’), once used on the margins of the Housebook, nowadays on the assembly table, an internet blog or a DJ’s mixing desk. The anthology, set against the backdrop of such cultural phenomena as video clips, web pages, the hypertext, rap, contemporary silva rerum or Abecedariuses, but also the scourge of plagiarism, appears to be a form characteristic of the postmodern heritage of a digitalized civilization. It would seem that the contemporary plethora of books and blogs titled or subtitled “an anthology” is one of the effects of the global omnipotence of the citation.

- Keywords:anthology; history of the term; genealogy; Lucian of Samosata; florilegium
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to familiarize the reader with the history of the term ἀνθολογία, as well as its cognates, employed as a headliner category defining the contents of the work as well as a genre. The author focuses on the Greek and Latin tradition over the course of time, as it certainly can be ascribed a significant culturally productive function across Europe from the ancient times till the 18th Century. The results of this reconnaissance would suggest that the term in question is widely used while referencing collections or works that manifestly emphasize the erudition of the author, as well as those containing various pieces of prose and poetry by a number of authors, and serving a twofold purpose: to please the reader while being of practical use as a study in morality, and to broaden one’s erudition while serving as a training material in writing and style. In the period of time discussed to distinguish between literary and practical anthologies would be pointless, as they were all not unlike glossaries, encyclopedias or collections of moral studies.

- Author(s):Magdalena Kokoszka
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Literary Texts, Studies of Literature, Philology, Theory of Literature
- Page Range:50-61
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:personal anthology; author’s choices; ego‑documents; citation; genology
- Summary/Abstract:The author of the article asserts that nowadays the anthologist is a persona of increasing prestige. She also tackles the widespread use of the terms “choice” and “anthology” as practically synonymous. She focuses on the specificity of the increasinglypopular kind of choices – that with a strongly resounding author‑subject, presenting chiefly one’s personal canons. Such choices can be situated in the context of the so‑calledego‑documents– accounts referencing personal experience, made in this instance not from the position of a historian or literary critic, but that of a reader. The author of the article is interested in the cultural context of the phenomena presented: the contemporary culture of citation, but also of uninhibited “use” of quotations, freed from the burdens of the culture of the original, replacing originality with innovation, unlimited “cloning” unscathed by the fear of the finite.

- Keywords:anthology; copyright; fair use; legislation; a collection of works
- Summary/Abstract:The article is a meticulous analysis of the legal status of the anthology as regulated by the Polish Copyright and Related Rights Act from 4th Feb 1994. It consists of two parts: the first one characterizes the anthology as the subject of the Copyright as defined by the art. 3 of the Copyright Act, that is as a collection of works. These reflections pivot around the attempts at situating such works amongst other forms protected by Copyright norms, and defining what rights and obligations follow publishing a compilation. The second section of the paper is focused on the institution of allowed public use as applied to the anthology – in this part discussed are the theoretical and axiological assumptions that lie at the foundations of limiting the authors’ monopoly with respect to protected works, as well as the premises, whose fulfillment is the legal precondition of publishing collections of works and other materials.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is dedicated to poetry created in Yiddish, a language used by a diminishing number of people. The author poses a number of important questions, for instance: is “Jewish poetry” (in Yiddish) exempt from belonging to a cultural environmentin which it has been created? Using the anthology of Jewish poetry as an example Marian Kisiel reflects on the status of the Yiddish language in the context of ethnolects of the countries where this kind of literature used to be written. Ultimately he postulates that Polish‑Jewish poetry is primarily Jewish, and only later (secondarily) Polish.

- No. of Pages:24
- Keywords:anthology; young literary Silesia; regionalism; Marian Kisiel; Paweł Majerski; Dariusz Pawelec
- Summary/Abstract:The subject of the article is the phenomenon of the Silesian young poets anthologies published after 1989: Inny świt by Marian Kisiel, W swoją stronę by Paweł Majerski and Martwe punkty by Dariusz Pawelec. The poetry collections in question present a different kind of poetry created in Silesia – different meaning, on the one hand departing from manifesting regionalisms in literary works, dissenting from regarding being‑Silesian only in relation to poetic schemes, while on the other still recording this very quality, subconsciously registering it. The authors of the anthologies have been looking for a common sensitivity amongst the individualities of all writers whose works have been collected. Yet, what the published collections were to show above all, was that there is something happening in Silesian poetry, that it is not stuck in a rut, quite to the contrary: it is changing, moving forward, has its storms and revolutions, and that with each new author comes a new poetics.

- Page Range:143-154
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:Na Dziko; young literary Silesia; Silesian poetry; Inny świt; W swoją stronę; Martwe punkty
- Summary/Abstract:In her article the author discusses aspects of the functioning of the texts written by the members of the Na Dziko poetry group in the context of the anthology of Silesian poetry. Being an extraordinary phenomenon in the literary lives of the younger generations of Silesians, the formation not only played an important role in the local culture, but also granted an utterly new cultural status to the region (until then mostly perceived as peripheral) and its literary milieu. The texts of the Na Dziko authors were extraordinary because of their artistic qualities, but also because of the common literary principles they voiced. The author undertakes a chronological review of particular anthologies comprised of texts written in Silesia, wherein the pieces by the group members have been included. The consecutive anthologies presenting the poetic accomplishments of the groups’ authors thus symbolically mirror the development of the group itself: from its formative phase, initiated by the anthology Inny świt, through the period of integration and collective activity (W swoją stronę), until the final phase of the formation’s functioning (the anthology Martwe punkty).

- Keywords:anthology; Kraj lat dziecinnych; 20th century emigration; “to cheer the hearts”; lost place
- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the anthology Kraj lat dziecinnych. The analysis of the volume has been dedicated to two primary issues that can consequently be divided into two groups: the first references the times the collection was created and its purposes, as their editors’ envisioned it as serving to cheer the hearts of the emigrants returning to the lost land of their childhood only in their memories; the second is an analysis of the anthology as the prototype of the genre dynamically growing after World War 2, both in the country and amongst the emigrants. The anthology included nineteen sketches and essays of varying artistic quality, whose authors were writers, politicians and artists rooted in one tradition and culture, whose lives had them face a radically different emigration reality. The landscapes summoned in their memories speak not only of the loss of a particular place geographically, but also of a part of one’s own identity, hence being a testimony to the terrors of history affecting both the lives of individual people and whole nations. This anthology can thus be somewhat considered a book of places lost, but also a version of the common fate of the Polish people.

- Keywords:Antologia poezji polskiej na obczyźnie 1939–1999; Bogdan Czaykowski; Polish emigration poetry; reception; anthology
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the genesis, structure and reception of one of the most interesting anthologies of poetry published after 1989. The author looks back at the attempts at construing similar anthologies of Polish emigration poetry, made already during World War 2, then in the following decades of development of Polish literature abroad. He discusses the early attempts at creating the anthology by Bogdan Czaykowski, then the concept, structure and criteria used to choose the pieces included in his 2002 anthology of Polish poetic texts written in a foreign land between 1939 and 1999 (Antologia poezji polskiej na obczyźnie 1939–1999). The article also discusses the critical reception of the volume and provides an overview of the most important arguments it raised. The conclusion reflects on the diversity of opinions on the anthology, pointing to the controversies it brought as well as to its incontestable merits. Those factors precisely contributed to the anthology, so long awaited by the emigration circles, falling into almost complete oblivion within fifteen years’ time.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents four anthologies of poetry published in the 20th and 21st century in Canada (their contents and reception being discussed), in which poems by the Poles living there have been included. The analysis of the anthologies proves a rather modest presence of the Polish poetry in the field of Anglophone Canadian literature. The collections presented are, however, proof of the willingness to accentuate the presence of the Polish poetry in the Polish circles abroad as well as in the country. The author also announces her own project of an anthology of Polish poetry in Canada, being currently a work in progress, entitled “Objąć cię słowem”.

- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:O krok od nich; Piotr Sommer; Jane Freilicher; anthology; New York
- Summary/Abstract:The sketch is dedicated to the anthology of American poets titled O krok od nich, by Piotr Sommer. It is an attempt at a critical commentary to the collection. The author focuses equally on the choice of the 20th century American poetry masters made by the poet‑translator, and on the common thematic denominators that may have affected those very choices. The anthology contains poems by writers coming from a number of poetic schools, yet who all had close connection with New York City. Piotr Sommer presents poets of the so called New York formation, like Allen Ginsberg, Frank O’Hara, John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch (New York Poetic School of the 50s), American modernists like Edward Estlin Cummings, the objectivists like Charles Reznikoff, or, last but not least, confessional poets (Robert Lowell). The author of the article focuses on one of the most interesting characteristics of Sommer’s anthology, namely his striving to present American poets’ work in the context of the motif their writing has in common – the city and the urban space. The reproductions of Jane Freilicher’s paintings serve as an original binding material of the whole collection, presented here as a painterly commentary to the lyricism of the American poets of the 20th century.

Particular emphasis was put on the function of those publications, as they often prove to be of a somewhat “historical‑literary project” character. Anthologies prepared by such literary theorists as Jacek Kolbuszewski, Michał Jagiełło, Stanisław Jaworski, among others, in fact often become the space for discussion on the very legitimacy of using the term “mountains literature”, its scope and the meaning of this kind of writing.

- Keywords:anthology; Polish reportage; bibliography; publishing market; canon of the genre
- Summary/Abstract:The author takes on as a subject the contemporary anthologies of Polish reportage. She divides these into two main categories: collections with a dominant referential function and the ones serving to present various kinds of reportage writing. For the purpose of exemplifying anthologies of the first type she refers to chosen collections dedicated to concrete geographical spaces or historical periods, whereas upon discussing the second, she takes up the issue of the literariness of reportage, often causing discrepancies in classifying reportage texts by the anthologists. An additional issue tackled is the relationship between the contemporary anthology and the canon of the genre, presented in the context of the transformation of the Polish publishing market after 1989. Upon summing up her analysis the author distinguishes two consequences of this process: the publishing of reportages collections under the auspices of “Gazeta Wyborcza” and their turning into interactive messages.

She points to a very contemporary promotion strategy is has been granted as affecting its popularity and the interest in the genre. She also accentuates the particular importance of the role of the editor, who not only made a choice of the reportages included, but also actively promoted the project. Moreover, he wrote the notes of particular reporters and their work, that precede each of the reportages included in the volumes. The above make both reading and discussing the anthology an important reflection on the genre itself and the role played by the editor.

- Summary/Abstract:In her article, the author attempts to describe a few works by Melchior Wańkowicz, a reporter and a writer, best known for his monumental Bitwa o Monte Cassino (The Battle of Monte Cassino). Drawing upon the terminology elaborated by Manfred Sommer, she concludes that, at the final stage of his life, Wańkowicz turns into a “gatherer” who revisits and reorders his earlier writings to compose new collections. Although the reportages in question vary in terms of their artistic quality, the consistency and doggedness of their author who, approaching the end, still deals with his prolific literary output, is striking. For Wańkowicz writing had always been raison d’être, and the sense of the end looming on the horizon contributed largely to rekindling of his creative powers. A tentative hypothesis put forward by the author suggests that the method of composition peculiar to Wańkowicz (a literary mosaic) may be seen as another variant of the anthology.

- Keywords:Ryszard Krynicki; anthology; haiku; Haiku; Haiku mistrzów; hypomnema
- Summary/Abstract:Ryszard Krynicki’s anthology Haiku, haiku mistrzów gathers the poet’s original work, close to the haiku form, as well as presents translations (paraphrases?) of the works of the Japanese masters of the genre (Bashō, Busona, Issa and Shiki). The author of the article analyzes the close relation between Krynicki’s writing and his translation work as well as the strikingly personal character of his anthology. Its creation stems from the poet’s creative path, heading towards short poetic forms, but above all is testimony to a special spiritual practice, wherein reading and writing are inextricably linked in the process of building subjectivity. In Krynicki’s anthology the Eastern cultural inspirations meet the Western tradition of creating hypomnemata. The special character of this collection, however, lies in its becoming an intimate place of encounter of poets from different times and distant places, while the record of experiencing the world in its fragility and transitoriness proves to be a deeply personalexperience.
