Summary/Abstract: Ryszard Krynicki’s anthology Haiku, haiku mistrzów gathers the poet’s original work, close to the haiku form, as well as presents translations (paraphrases?) of the works of the Japanese masters of the genre (Bashō, Busona, Issa and Shiki). The author of the article analyzes the close relation between Krynicki’s writing and his translation work as well as the strikingly personal character of his anthology. Its creation stems from the poet’s creative path, heading towards short poetic forms, but above all is testimony to a special spiritual practice, wherein reading and writing are inextricably linked in the process of building subjectivity. In Krynicki’s anthology the Eastern cultural inspirations meet the Western tradition of creating hypomnemata. The special character of this collection, however, lies in its becoming an intimate place of encounter of poets from different times and distant places, while the record of experiencing the world in its fragility and transitoriness proves to be a deeply personalexperience.
