- Summary/Abstract:As usually presented, there are three ways to understand the term “global bioethics.” First, the term may be understood simply as a subfield of bioethics—one that focuses on global issues that nations cannot resolve independently. Examples include patenting disputes, pandemics, genetic material controversies, medical tourism and trade in human tissue (be it stem cells or human organs). Second, the term “global bioethics” may refer to developments in the field of bioethics as a whole. The bioethics climate is such that it has generated new organizations such as the International Association of Bioethics and the International Network for Feminist Approaches to Bioethics. Some of the approaches to bioethics represented in these organizations rely heavily on Tom Beauchamp and James Childress’s Principles of Bioethics (Beauchamp and Childress 1994). But an increasing number of them rely instead on culturally specific philosophical, religious, and literary traditions. Third, and finally, the term “global bioethics” or, more precisely, “globalizing bioethics” may refer to the attempt to find a conceptual foundation particularist enough to accommodate human diversities, yet universal enough to serve as a common base from which collaborative action can be launched.

- Page Range:42-61
- No. of Pages:20
- Keywords:ecofeminism; feminism; ecology; bioethics; pluriperspectivity
- Summary/Abstract:The author, firstly, critically examines the very notion of ecofeminism and ecofeminist movement, as well as points at its twofold source, i.e. feminist and ecologist theory and practice. Secondly, the author discusses (dis)connection between ecofeminism and feminist bioethics, advocating their unity in a more comprehensive theoretical-practical framework. Finally, the author shows how ecofeminism and feminist bioethics can and should be included into the project of integrative bioethics, which is based on the concepts of interdisciplinarity, pluriperspectivity and integrativity, as well as orientational knowledge and meaning-truth. Throughout the text, the author tries to prove the thesis that ecofeminism should not be perceived as mere “ecology for women”.

- Summary/Abstract:The key ecofeminist discursive preoccupation is with deconstruction of the western world’s dualism, whose derivatives bring forward the sources of the problem of human inequality and production of hierarchies. In this context ecofeminists present understanding of domination, and interpret the causes of ecological crisis through examination of power models and gendered hierarchies in contemporary soceties. In other words, the conceptual link is studied between the domination over women and domination over nature as the “original others.” Eecofeministic requests for integrating social and environmental debates on environmental issues are clarified by the view of impossibility of carrying out social change in relation to oppression by women without manifestation of environmental degradation, and environmental issues have become issues of social justice. Calling for respect of the pattern of the natural world which, by its very diversity, demonstrates the principle of sound and stable system, ecofeminists suggest creating a vision of a society in which the abolishmnet of the patriarchate and other forms of domination.

- Summary/Abstract:Since problems of ecofeminism are orientated not only towards contemporary times, but also towards future, this paper will examine the role of technique in an attempt of their resolving. Post-modern, lets call it fluid, understanding of the Being as plurality is given as an alternative to often criticized horizon of classical metaphysic (reduced on monistic or factual understanding of Being in a sense of something that is given, firm and/or unchangeable). Precisely that post-modern understanding is often appreciated as a solution of ecological and feminist issues. Does a unity of a man and the machine, the same unity which bare attempt has produced ecological and other problems that we are affronting, truly offer their solution or do the old conditions of domination over women and domination over nature transfer in the idea of transhuman beings? Is the world of information as the essence of a cultural (human) world a solution of a ‘problem’ of natural or is it a path to a new, repetitive, slavery? As an effort of answering this and other questions, reasoning of the idea of transhumanism (Bostrom – Sloterdijk) in a feminist discourse (Haraway) will be related to epistemological understanding of technique (Heidegger, Gehlen). This appreciation will be comprehended as the finalization of a dominant ‘stiff’ metaphysical understanding of nature (as something that can be realized).

- Summary/Abstract:Once a motif reserved for the Romantics, the nature has become a threatening theme for fiction dystopias authors of 20th century. One of them, Margaret Atwood, is known best for her speculative and ecofeminist prose such as her latest novel The Year of the Flood (2008). Her survival novels’ characters strongly relate to some of the female heroines from popular culture such as Evey from A.More’s graphic novel V for Vendetta, Jamie Hewlett’s Tank Girl, cyberpunk heroines by William Gibson, Stieg Larsson’s Lisbet Salander from his Millennium trilogy, Ellen Ripley from movie series Alien and Battlestar Galactica’s female viper pilot Starbuck.

- Summary/Abstract:Ecological feminism carries huge potential for the transformation of the world as we know it, starting from changes in values as substantial element of identity of dominant culture. By pointing at the significant issues which hinder the evolution of society, ecofeminism advocates justice and rights not only of mankind, but of the overall life, in line with the principles of the deep ecology. Such tendencies encounter the resistance of those who control the global processes. Since the control of the society perception is a crucial way of its control, it is no wonder that the ecofeminism faces suppression primarily in the theoretical ground. Neither in the academic sphere, nor in the wider cultural surrounding does the ecofeminism take a significant place. The failure of the ecofeminism to cope with the established world view is not related to its inner nature – it does not lean on the “feminine” characteristics which include acquiescence and irrational dispersion, but fully advocates complementarity and balance of all kinds of differences. This is exactly why ecofeminism enables discovery of weaknesses in the existing worldview and principles of the required changes.

- Keywords:women’s movement; ecofeminism; gender and development; semiperiphery; connectedness
- Summary/Abstract:This paper presents an overview of the ecofeminist ideas in different women’s initiatives in Serbia from the beginning of the 90s. It will disclose the interconnectedness of the issues related to gender, social justice and environment as one of the major foundation blocks of the movement. However, due to the wars and transition, environmental issues got marginalized while issues of ’protection’ of women got priority. Women’s movement, being ’NGO-ized’, has largely reflected donors’ concerns, from the end of 90s, and environment, except within feminist educational initiatives, was mostly absent as a topic from agenda during the 90s. In recent years, environmental concerns became revitalized and framed within the processes of europianisation and globalisation. The author argues that revival of ecofeminist discources and practices in women’s movement requires a kind of paradigm shift from the emphasis on difference to emphasis on connectedness, as well as theoretical grounding in the semiperipheral perspective. The paper is built on complementary methods, using participant observation, in-depth interviews with some of the key stakeholders in women’s movement in Serbia, as well as on analysis of documents and publications produced within the movement.

- No. of Pages:29
- Keywords:androcentrism; patriarchalism; gender egalitarianism; sexism; technocentrism
- Summary/Abstract:In this paper we present the results of a research conducted in the year 2010 on a representative sample of Croatian citizens (N = 1008). The aim of this study was to determine empirical dimensions of gender identity and connect them with a preference of one of the following socio- ecological orientations: anthropocentrism, which is the belief that man is an absolute master of nature, technocentrism which was operationalized by the statement that modern technology has much more positive than negative traits, and ecocentrism by which humans are only one of the natural beings and must obey the laws of nature. The results showed that there are three dimensions of gender identity: two sexist (androcentrism and patriarchalism) and one declarative egalitarian. First two dimensions are more accepted by men and elderly respondents, whereas declarative egalitarianism is more accepted by women and younger respondents. It was found that the most common socio-ecological orientation is ecocentrism and that it is somewhat more accepted among women, while the most seldom chosen socio-ecological attitude is anthropocentristic one, which is, however, equally present in both gender groups. Technocentristic orientation is more accepted among men. The results of the analysis of tendency to different dimensions of gender identity with regard to socio-ecological orientation show that technocentrists are less prone to androcentrism and patriarchalism, while antropocentrists reveal the strongest androcentristic and patriarchalistic attitudes (in both gender groups). These findings point to an interesting conclusion that the positive evaluation of modern technology is associated with lower level of sexism.

- No. of Pages:22
- Keywords:ecofeminism; reproduction; pregnancy; women
- Summary/Abstract:Ecofeminism showed three decades ago the social foundations of oppression of women and nature, but women’s reproductive rights remain in the sphere of political control run by the ruling system of ideologies, politics and the dominant patriarchal social institutions. The social practice has not established the principle of self-determination of women when it comes to human reproduction, and women’s bodies are still treated as objects owned by someone else – the family, government, politics, Catholic Church etc. When it comes to Croatia, public opinion and the results of scientific research are completely ignored in reproductive politics. Reproductive policy in Croatia deprived reproductive self-determination of women and couples, derogating some of their acquired rights, and leaving them to re-traditional values associated with reproductive decisions, thereby increasing the risks for women’s reproductive health and strengthening gender discrimination. The results of research in Croatia, in 2009, on a representative sample of 1363 respondents, showed a developed awareness of women and the need for more contemprorary access to their reproductive decisions, and access to reproductive techniques than their reproductive practices in a society allow. Men generally showed more conservative view, but both expressed support for a woman’s right to choose in terms of reproductive decisions.

- No. of Pages:24
- Keywords:hate graffiti; fear; contextualization; ecofeminists’ anti graffiti activities; actions against graffiti
- Summary/Abstract:This text presents a theoretical background of feminist actions against hate graffiti. It begins with the analysis of legal background applicable for punishment for hate graffiti. This is followed by an analysis of who are the hate graffiti creators (artists anarchists, those who are manipulated, etc.) and who is behind them; and, what are the different effects of hate and fear, who is frightened and who is encouraged by them. Hate graffiti should be interpreted in their context rather than isolated phenomena. Eco feminist principles of confronting all forms of hate speech lead to concrete actions against hate graffiti. The text comments feminists’ actions conducted during 2011 in Belgrade and Novi Sad; their effects are analyzed and compared. Conclusion states that there is a lack of permanent, regular official, institutional reaction against hate graffiti and their creators.

- Subject(s):Gender Studies, Sociology, Gender history, Environmental interactions
- Page Range:247-266
- No. of Pages:20
- Keywords:ecology; eco/feminism; environmental protection; environmentalism
- Summary/Abstract:Since the mid 20th century feminism and environment protection movement meet on many different levels. They both critically redefine scientific paradigms bringing feminist critics of science close to ecological/ environmental theories in a historical, sociological, methodological and epistemological context. Modern ecofeminism, joining up both movements, reveals how women and nature contrary to machines and technologies, are still considered as insufficiently productive. This is how our patriarchal economy still promotes the concept of masculine development, making the categories of development and productivity sources of gender inequality and environmental destruction. This paper deals with the development of the ecological conscience in Serbia today analyzing if it reached the level of a consistent social theory. It questions if the feminism and environmentalism in this country in transition, both in theory and practice, recognize each other as allies and promoters of the same ideas, or still travel side by side, on parallel but different paths.
