Summary/Abstract: Integration of the Polish insurance sector with EU financial markets increased foreign investments and the market share of foreign-owned companies, which reduced the market concentration. The research based on the panel data on 27 companies for the period of 2003-2009 shows that companies reduced the levels of operating costs, and a positive, slightly decreasing value of the scale effect indicates that the sector has potential to gain benefits of economies of scale. The competition level, measured with the Boone Index indicates an increase of competition with the maximum achieved in 2008. The improvements in competition could come from the increase of joint sales of bank and insurance products through the banking network.
