Summary/Abstract: Since the mid of the first decade of the 2000s banks have played an increasing role in the insurance distribution, particularly life insurance. In 2010 29% of life insurance premiums were gathered through the banking network. Excluding the period of 2008-2009, the majority of gathered life insurance premiums referred to the group policies. Banks sold policies in packages with other banking products, as well as individual investment instruments. On the much less scale banks participated in the distribution of non-life insurance, albeit the share of such distribution systematically increased. In this group of insurance the dominant was insurance of financial risk. Fees from the sale of insurance became an important element of the noninterest bank income. These benefits motivated nearly all banks to sell life insurance and about 75% of banks to sell non-life insurance.
