Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the results of estimation of cost efficiency and economy of scale in the life insurance sector in Poland in the years 2002-2011. The average efficiency was high and equaled about 80%, which could be compared to the levels in the EU countries. Efficiency was in a downward trend, due to the increasing acquisition costs and economy of scale. Companies with the majority of foreign capital reached higher efficiency, which means that investments of foreign insurers improved the level of technology and quality of management throughout the Polish sector. Smaller plants were more efficient than their larger competitors due to their better management and flexibility. Life insurance sector increased its activities in the utilization of economies of scale and in 2011 reached the level of 98%. Economy of scale was more used by large companies.
