Summary/Abstract: In the first decade of 2000 the share of loans to non-banks in banks’ assets significantly increased, although the highest growth rate of loans was recorded after the Polish accession to the EU in 2004. During this period the structure of the loan portfolio changed. After the years of dominance of loans to businesses, since 2005 the largest share of the banks’ non-financial loans has been composed of loans to households. This change resulted from the unchanged level of banks` involvement in financing enterprises and the growth of lending to households. For banks, housing loans became the main lending product, which in 2010 accounted for 23% of assets. Most of them were denominated in foreign currency. The banks reduced the share of consumer loans up to 12% of the assets and the share of loans to businesses to 18%,. Banks in similar proportions were financing current and investment activities of enterprises.
