Summary/Abstract: The author presents the geographical characteristics of the loose and more closely connected foreland of the port of Fiume, as well as the development of its position in relation to its main competitor, Trieste and the major European ports. The two least researched segments of Fiume's economic history are the role of the city and the coastal Hungarian-Croatian entity, as well as in the maritime freight traffic of the Austrian provinces of Dalmatia and Istria. The result of a detailed data analysis is the determination of the traffic generated by the two lower (local, interprovincial) levels of the hinterland.
