Summary/Abstract: The report presents outcomes of extensive material research on books for children and youth responding to human disadvantage (original and translated literature from the mid-19thcentury to 2020), which was carried out in 2016 – 2020 at the workplaces of the Faculty of Education of the University of Prešov in Prešov. The research has shown the historical variability of literary and artistic creative approaches to depicting the topic of disadvantage on a scale: verifying approach, romantic approach and embodying (concrete-sensual, introspective) approach. The obtained research results represent a systematic analysis and interpretation of the material, closed by synthesizing views on the issue of literary and artistic-illustrative representation of the observed topic in the historical-developmental process; such material processing is pilot in our cultural context. The solved project brings the following results: thorough mapping of the representation and thematic, genre and poetological variability of depictions of different types of human disadvantage in the history of original and translated literature for children and youth published in Slovakia in the years 1850 –2020; profiling the developmental waves of the theme in book production and drama; characteristics of specific approaches to grasping the topic in book illustration; indication of new artistic trends in the thematization of the problem; linking research results with special pedagogical theory and practice. The published results of the solution significantly expand the opportunities that in the process of forming an inclusive society: a) enable the majority population to get to know the inner world of people with different types of alterity through the artistic depiction more intimately; b) in the interpretation of the interactions of literary characters to perceive the prejudices and barriers they encounter, their consequences and the possibilities of their elimination; c) they reassure people with disabilities that they are an organic and full part of society.
